Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.

Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.

Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:

  • Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
  • Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
  • A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
  • A page should not be moved and a new move discussion should not be opened when there is already an open move request on a talk page. Instead, please participate in the open discussion.
  • Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.

Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus to move the page is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will carry out the request. If there is a consensus not to move the page, the request will be closed as "not moved". When consensus remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion may be closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.

Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.

When not to use this page

Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:

Undiscussed moves

Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:

  • No article exists at the new target title;
  • There has been no previous discussion about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
  • It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.

If you disagree with a prior bold move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.

Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.

Current proposals

  • Sega DreamcastDreamcastRationale: Like the PlayStation, Xbox & Wii, and unlike all of Sega's previous consoles, the Dreamcast logo makes no mention of the manufacturer's brand name (in this case, Sega). Also, "Dreamcast" on its own returns substantially more Google hits (52,800,000) than "Sega Dreamcast" (9,220,000). … Please share your opinion at Talk:Sega Dreamcast. — Lumina83 09:30, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: This move is not controversial. The redirect back is simply obstructed.

  1. The result of the merge voting of zh:內湖虐貓事件(means "Cat abuse incident in Neihu") and zh:方尚文(means "Shangwen Fang") on zh-wp is to merge into zh:內湖虐貓事件. To move this page to Cat abuse incident in Neihu will make the article mapping between en/zh WP more precisely.
  2. This article describes the cat abuse incident more than Fang himself.

Also I do not think it's good to reveal someone's personal data on WP if the person is not a famous one (however, some might disagree). … Please share your opinion at Talk:Shangwen Fang. — H.T. Chien / 眼鏡虎 (Discuss|Contributions) 13:51, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Aerocar AerocarAerocarRationale: The double name is a convention only used by Wikipedia. The vehicle is the Aerocar, which redirects to this page. There is already a disambiguation page at the top. … Please share your opinion at Talk:Aerocar Aerocar. — — Reinyday, 06:30, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

This request is a merge request and not a move request. It requests a merger of the convertible, coupe, and sedan articles.

  • Pak BengPakbengRationale: Same town, but its only one word, not two, as indicated by Lonely Planet and a Google search. Merger was proposed two weeks ago, seems no reason not to. I want to clean up the article and add a picture, but not until this is resolved. Tried moving myself, had troubles - not controversial. Can take care of the links myself. This did not need a discussion - and has now been moved by the requester (at my suggestion). -- Beardo 23:53, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The proposer has moved it to HMS Surprise (ship) without waiting for further votes. -- Beardo 00:13, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move

Ashbury College High School -> Ashbury College The school does not use the term 'High School', and therefore the official name is 'Ashbury College'. The trem College is in fact often used for secondary education estabishments and therefore 'Ashbury College High School' is redundant.

Level of detail (programming) -> Level of detail: Level of detail is simpler and makes more sense; there's no reason for level of detail to redirect to level of detail (programming). "Programming" doesn't even accurately describe LoD -- its more of a generic computer graphics thing. MisterPhyrePhox 01:23, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I support the move. It does not seem to lose any information furthermore, newer page versions being worked are just concept-driven, making "programming" something not justified in the title. MaxDZ8 talk 07:29, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of Vaporwares -> List of Vaporware: grammar nazism, words ending in -ware do not have plurals. There are no such words as 'softwares', 'hardwares' or 'vaporwares'. Elomis 23:49, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Neither page seems to have existed. Someone has moved "List of vaporwares" to List of vaporware. Should we have a redirect in List of Vaporware ? -- Beardo 00:29, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see that this needs discussion. I have done it. -- Beardo 02:16, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Chilean-Confederation war War of the Confederation - Rationale: The common name used in the history books of Latin America is War of the Confederation , not the new one that has been substituted and represents a clear POV. The name comes not from a list of the participants (Argentina, Chile, Confederation) but from the fact that the ultimate goal of each side was either to preserve or eliminate the Confederation as a political entity within Latin America . The new name “Chilean-Confederation War” assumes only two participants, which is not the case, and is not even in common use in Peru, the only place where it has some actual proponents. The older Peruvian historians all use “War of the Confederation”. Propose going back to War of the Confederation since it is the most commonly used name in all history books - Mel Romero 02:01, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Neither page seems to exist - nor that use ? A hoax ? Or deleted ? -- Beardo 05:40, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Rhodesian ManHomo rhodesiensisRationale: non-controversial move to make the page cosistent with other species pages (Rhodesian Man is the name of a particular fossil but the page is about the species), but it is over a redirect that has a small history so I need an admin. This move has been requested before, but no one acted on it and there was no comment other than my own. Please share your opinion at Talk:Rhodesian Man. • Kingdom of Italy (Medieval)Regnum Italicum — The parentheticl "medieval" is ugly and should probably not be capitalised, so the artilce ought to be moved anyway. Might as well move it to the "prettier" title, which is just a Latin translation of "Kingdom of Italy" but was the usage of the time.

  • Rugby Union Tri NationsTri Nations SeriesRationale: The page was originally called Tri Nations Series but was moved without discussion, presumably as an analogy with the Rugby League Tri Nations which is a similarly named competition in a different sport. I accept that this move was not done with malice but it was an error as the correct name for this competition is 'Tri Nations Series'. We have had votes for renaming as 'Tri Nations' and 'Tri Nations rugby union series' but both were inconclusive. We have not had a chance to vote on the original and official name.GordyB 13:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC) … Please share your opinion at Talk:Rugby Union Tri Nations. — GordyB 13:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Numeral systemHistory of numbersRationale: The page title wanders into mathematical material such as continued fractions, the stuff at number system, and applications to computing, whereas the talk page generally supports what's been developed by different cultures historically rather than in modern times (such as fictional systems in computer games, which was stripped), and indeed a lot more can be said than the Western bias of what has been included. The information on positional number systems and change of radix really needs to be on a page of its own anyway; this is a mathematical treatment and does not cover e.g. dual base (5 and 20) or many other cultural inventions. This is a strange mix of the history and an injection of other thoughts. Davilla 09:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Move dated sections here after 5 days have passed.

  • PopsicleIce lollipopRationale: As per discussion on Talk:Popsicle. The current article's name is only that of ONE brand name, in TWO countries in North America. The rest of the world do not call it as such. A more generic name should be used, and it is proposed as the original name for the product. No convincing objections to the proposal have surfaced in several weeks (see the talk page). EuroSong talk 19:42, 3 September 2006 (UTC) … Please share your opinion at Talk:Popsicle. — EuroSong talk 19:42, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
NOTE: This issue appears to have been resolved by the creation of Ice pop and leaving Popsicle where it is, but focusing the article on the brand and not the generic treat. I suggest it be move from here. --Serge 22:13, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Used nuclear fuelSpent nuclear fuelRationale: "Spent nuclear fuel" and "spent fuel" are far more commonly used that "used nuclear fuel". While I know from experience that this is this case, Google results are better evidence. "Used nuclear fuel" gets 68,700 results, while "spent nuclear fuel" gets 1,330,000 results and "spent fuel" gets 2,050,000, which is 19 times and 30 times more results, respectively. … Please share your opinion at Talk:Used nuclear fuel. — Kjkolb 03:40, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • William Webb Ellis Cup to → Webb Ellis Cup ... Rationale: There has been some discussion as to what the name of the artivle should be. After seeing that Web Ellis Cup is what is actually engraved on the trophy, I think the page should be there. Is already a redirect, but I want to move the talk page as well, so I think an admin will have to do it. Cvene64 04:48, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Fort Bliss, TexasFort BlissRationale: Unto my experience that United States Army has nevered used "Fort, X, Y" as a way of naming a base, its has always just been "Fort X". To that end I would like the article transfered back to its original page, both to reflect on the correct name of the base and to help bring the article in line the other US Fort articles here on Wikipedia … Please share your opinion at Talk:Fort Bliss, Texas. — TomStar81 03:54, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Per AFD nomination of applicible disambiguation page, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Atlas V (disambiguation)

  • Palkia and DialgaParukia and DiarugaRationale: Palkia and Dialga have never been confirmed to be the official romanizations of these two names. Only Parukia and Diaruga have ever been confirmed. Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures, The Pokémon Company...these are the only companies who would confirm the official romanization of the names. None of them have done this. Nintendo confirmed Parukia and Diaruga and that was that. Double Dash 21:09, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mainland As you can see in the article itself, the name "Mainland China" is a matter of dispute, so it is ambiguous. The term "People's Republic of China" is not a matter of dispute, so it is more desirable. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 22:25, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Huh? Where is the dispute? The Mainland China article specifically says that it is the areas administered by the PRC government, excluding Hong Kong and Macao. The term "mainland China" is not a matter of dispute. On the other hand, changing the name of the article as suggested is very problematic because the article does not cover the demographics of Hong Kong and Macao. The PRC includes Hong Kong and Macao, but mainland China does not. --- Hong Qi Gong 22:54, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is Did you see the talk page, and the insertion of the dubious template? Did you read the article? -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 19:41, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is What? What are you talking about? All notable sources about "Mainland China" is clear on what the term means. --- Hong Qi Gong 21:42, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is there a criteria I don't know about that says these "Demographics of..." articles must be about countries? In that case, we would have to eliminate the HK demographics article, and any other demographics articles that's not about a country. That would be quite a loss. We can have both a PRC demographics article and a mainland China demographics article, though I can see how that may be, for the most part, kind of redundant. Perhaps a PRC demographics article that makes short mention of all three of mainland China, HK, and Macao, and link to the demographics article for all three regions? --- Hong Qi Gong 17:27, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
