Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
• For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
• Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
• If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
• Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
• For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
• New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

how to resolve citation issues in the page?

I've been trying to update a company page and I've updated the links and citations to the best of my knowledge. However, the citation error message is still on and it doesn't say how I can resolve it. Please let me know how I can identify and resolve these issues? Also, How can I verify my account to be able to add company logo?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AsureQuality_Limited

You need to get into your DeLorean, speed up to 88 mph and travel to 2 December 2021. Then the reference errors will go away. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:13, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Or are you talking about the messages at the top? Those can be removed manually, but if you have a connection to the company (as it seems), you shouldn't be the one to do that. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:16, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done Updated the access date to remove the error message. A publication date of 2 December 2021, was also removed as it's only June 2021. Cmr08 (talk) 02:35, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 25 has red ink and refers to a "mark up". Please fix. Thanks for your help. 175.32.24.11 (talk) 03:03, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The error is self-explanatory. The publisher field can contain only plain text. The error is tracked in Category:CS1 errors: markup which has only one member, this article. So I am fairly certain someone will come along and fix it soon. There is no need to report this here at the Help Desk. MB 03:31, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tricky question

Hello dear wikipedians, I have sort of a tricky question if anybody minds answering. If a broadly tbanned user on eng-wiki can’t participate in a deletion discussion of a controversial article, which falls directly under their tban and might be deleted, and instead they create multiple interwiki articles, linking the eng-wiki article in them and what seems like spreading and “saving” the controversial article in other lang-wikis while a discussion for deletion is going on in the initial version of the article (english), can it be seen as engaging with the eng-wiki article cause of linking it in different interwikis, and subsequently, a violation of their tban? I also have reasons to suspect bad faith, as the user didn’t know those languages according to their page, yet they’ve created those translations in bulk while the En version is considered for deletion, and linked the En version in them. Would appreciate the replies, many thanks. Regards, ZaniGiovanni (talk) 10:13, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Eh, it's the type of thing that probably would not actually violate the TBAN (if all edits are on other projects) while simultaneously something to bring up if they ever appealed the TBAN, if that makes sense. @ZaniGiovanni: Nosebagbear (talk) 12:35, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The TBAN only applies on en.wiki, so can't be enforced for edits on other language Wikipedias. As for linking to English language articles, most of that is done automatically by Wikidata links (or other users on Wikidata). Without seeing specific examples, it doesn't seem like a violation of the TBAN. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:50, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about vandalism

I have two questions about vandalism. Is it vandalism to change a correct information by inserting a wrong one? How many acts of vandalism must there be to request protection of the page? Dr Salvus 12:12, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr Salvus: If it's deliberately inserting wrong information then yeah, it's vandalism. The "deliberate" part is important: there's an expectation to assume good faith, so if it's not obviously deliberate (e.g., if it's plausible that the editor just misinterpreted a source) then it shouldn't be treated as vandalism. See WP:VANDAL for the full details. As far as I know, there isn't any specified number of vandal edits that qualifies a page to be protected, it's discretionary on the part of the protecting admin (WP:RFP is where to request it). —Nizolan (talk · c.) 12:36, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Dr Salvus:, the relevant bit of WP:VANDALISM is The malicious removal of encyclopedic content, or the changing of such content beyond all recognition, without any regard to our core content policies of neutral point of view (which does not mean no point of view), verifiability and no original research, is a deliberate attempt to damage Wikipedia. Per AGF it's got to be very clear that they're not just misguided, or wrong. If it's a single account causing problems and you weren't able to resolve the issue through discussion and warnings, then you'd normally request something like a page-ban. Protection is if you've got multiple accounts causing problems in a fairly short period of time. Nosebagbear (talk) 12:39, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Status on Article Review: David Phipps

Hello, In February, my organization wrote an article on David Phipps (exact title may be: David Phipps, David J. Phipps, or David James Phipps), a British-born Canadian pioneer in the field of Knowledge Mobilization. I believe the article was submitted for review. I wanted to know if I could receive an update on this article at your earliest convenience. Many thanks! 166.48.18.210 (talk) 12:38, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I was unable to locate anything like that in the existing pages. Is it still known which user name or IP adress(es) were used back then? Victor Schmidt (talk) 13:05, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing I see, is a 2008 comment by someone using the name Davidphipps at Talk:Knowledge mobilization. Their three contributions are at Special:Contributions/Davidphipps. Mathglot (talk) 22:06, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What's strange about this diff?

Hi - while patrolling recent changes, I came across this diff. The article history tells me that 8 bytes were added; six words are highlighted as having been removed, and the same six words are highlighted as having been added - but I can't see any actual differences. Are these different unicode characters or something? What am I missing? The user has made lots of similar changes; I've asked them what they're doing but no response so far; at the moment, I'm trying to work out if the changes are beneficial, neutral or harmful in order to work out what, if anything, needs to be done. Thanks in advance, GirthSummit (blether) 12:59, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cyrillic characters that look like Latin characters. The edits should be reverted. I would be surprised if you get a response.
https://r12a.github.io/uniview/ is a handy tool. Copy the changed text (the new text) from the diff and paste it into the text box at right and then click the big down-arrow.
Trappist the monk (talk) 13:34, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I copied both into Notepad++. By default, they look identical, but when I change the encoding to ANSI, the marked words have extra non-ANSI characters:
Fеbruаrу 8, 2000) wаs а mоrning DJ on WGN-720AM radio in Chicago. Нis shоw was
I suspect someone using a Unicode-capable editor has been fiddling about, possibly innocently, and is inserting non-standard characters that look identical to the original. However, since it will obviously affect finding and editing the text, and any onward use of the text, it ought to be reverted and the user asked to stop.--Verbarson (talk) 13:37, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've reverted all the character swaps and gently asked the user not to make any more. firefly ( t · c ) 14:22, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks all - that is a very handy tool, much appreciated Trappist the monk. I will add some additional words of guidance to Firefly's note. GirthSummit (blether) 14:30, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dead URLs

Hi, I ran into a dead citation link on Jarryd James (EP). Alternative Addiction URL isn't working for me (not even the main site). What do I do in that situation? I also couldn't find the WP help file for this particular issue. Could someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you. :) Abillionradios (talk) 13:32, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You can use services such as archive.today, Wayback Machine, WebCite, Perma.cc, and WebRecorder.io to find archived copies of Web pages and add them to citations using the |archive-url= and |archive-date= parameters. Kleinpecan (talk) 14:18, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That link was actually a dead 505 link when it was originally added. I'm trying The Wayback Machine to see if I can find what it was, but it's a bit difficult without the page title that I'm looking for. - X201 (talk) 14:19, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Making Major Edits

Hi! If I would like to majorly restructure a page / make major edits, do I need to request special permission or can I edit directly on the page once I have signed up? The kind of edits I am looking to make are removing subheadings, adding/removing information, etc (as the database that the page is about is no longer available). This is the page I am interested in working on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HumGen#Guidelines

Many thanks.

Khilaryc (talk)

Khilaryc Are you related to the subject of that article at all? I see that a substantial amount of content was removed from it recently, on the grounds that it wasn't encyclopedic. You should be aware of the conflict of interest guidance, and with the paid editing policy, which forms part of the terms of use of this website. Thanks GirthSummit (blether) 14:43, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Girth Summit Hi, yes I am employed by the organization the database is from.(however, I was not the one who previously created / edited the page).
Khilaryc As someone employed by the organization, you are considered to have a conflict of interest, and if your employer has asked or instructed you to edit the page, you are also a paid editor and must make the mandatory disclosures described here. The best advice for paid editors is not to directly edit the article. Instead, make edit requests on the article's talk page in a simple, "Change X to Y. (source)" format. For an edit as major as what you seem to be describing, it might be a good idea to draft the revised article in your User:Khilaryc/sandbox. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:34, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Khilaryc Just noting that one does not have to be specifically paid or specifically asked to edit Wikipedia; if editing Wikipedia conceivably falls within your job duties, you are a paid editor. 331dot (talk) 08:31, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox football country season

When I put a football country season infobox for Abkhazia and make 2020, when it gives me the option to go back to 2019 and to 2021, it gives a red link to "2021/2019 in football" instead of "2021/2019 in Abkhazian football" therefore, if I make an article on 2021 or 2019, the 2020 won't link to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mwiqdoh (talkcontribs) 14:35, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone see this question anymore? Mwiqdoh (talk) 03:05, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Separate issue

You shouldn't be creating articles in other user space locations like you have done with User:2021 Neighbours' Games and User:Badminton at the 2021 Neighbours' Games and User:Badminton at the Mwiqdoh/sandbox/private.info. Create new user pages underneath your own user name e.g User:Mwiqdoh/Badminton at the 2021 Neighbours' Games. Can an admin move these and tidy up the redirects please. Thanks - X201 (talk) 15:16, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrewthedog: I am afraid that will never happen. While its true that the Wikimedia Foundation sometimes edits Wikipedia, they only do so in very limited causes, when something is so deeply off it requires immediate intervention. Victor Schmidt (talk) 15:30, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

donald trump

who wrote the article about Donald j trump sounds like a anti trumper to me trump gave up dealing in his company why he was president he did not even accept a penny for being president well i take that back he accepted 1 dollar a year. Because a president is required to be compensated for his work. they say he benefited from his own companies. well duhh even if he dose not run the companies why he is president of course he is going to benefit from them they are his companies even though his kids ran them for him the bio did not mention his peace in the middle east deals or new Canada trade deal. this is a very bias bio of president trump and it dose not even mention how all these governors of the 5 battle ground states. broke the states election laws because legislation is the only one able to alter a election or the fact that he kept millions of illegals from being counted in our census bringing to end over inflated congressional sets being giving because they was allowing illegal's in the census count for said states. can wait to see joe biden i can see it now ohh he was the greatest thing since sliced bread he allowed millions to flow threw the border finally ending the oppressors keeping none citizens out of the country and from voting and let not even talk about how great hunter biden he gladly accepted money from china even had a seat on a corrupt company. let not even talk about how biden funnels money he was paid through his donation funds to avoid offering employees health care that work at his company this is a very bias company and i would not rely on anything you read on it obama fined people for not being able to afford insurance and sent pallets of cash to over seas company that went to terrorist countries. he was the worst president in history — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.161.232.157 (talk) 19:32, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

At the risk of going outside the scope of this forum ... As an intelligent and literate two-times Trump voter (who does not regret it a bit), I read this (as much as I can follow it), and wonder if it was in fact written by a knee-jerk anti-Trumper in an effort to make Trump supporters look like a bunch of ignoramuses who can't complete a coherent sentence or thought. Article was Deleted

Hi this is StarsYep1, I created a page this morning and the article was deleted due to using it as a web host. I've realized my mistake; however, may I have the draft back to change the content within without restarting the entire article again? Additionally, is there a way where you can look at my old article and tell me what section was not met to wiki's regulations, so I won't make the same mistake.

Thank you, Selena Chen — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starsyep1 (talkcontribs) 20:19, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Starsyep1 The draft was a blatant advertisement. Wikipedia is not a place for organizations to tell the world about themselves. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about an organization, showing how it meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable organization. Please read Your first article and learn more about article creation at Articles for Creation.
Please review conflict of interest and paid editing for information on required formal disclosures you may need to make. 331dot (talk) 20:27, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural marxism wikepedia page

How may i put this politely? This page is simply, don't want to say wrong but it's inaccurate. by that i mean inaccurate from the start. "Cultural Marxism is a far-right antisemitic conspiracy theory which claims Western Marxism as the basis of continuing academic and intellectual efforts to subvert Western culture.[1][2][3] The conspiracists claim that an elite of Marxist theorists and Frankfurt School intellectuals are subverting Western society with a culture war that undermines the Christian values of traditionalist conservatism and promotes the cultural liberal values of the 1960s counterculture and multiculturalism, progressive politics and political correctness, misrepresented as identity politics created by critical theory." The theory is not antisemitic, in fact neither race nor religion (most christians are right of centre but not related too much) play a proper roll in agreement of the idea. Also it is not a conspiracy theory. the most you can say is just a theory but it is not conspiratory. The idea is that people on the left wing applied Karl Marx's theories to cultures rather than economies. Sadly i cannot edit it so i ask if you can please find a way to scale down how left of centre it is. genuinely leaving it at theory (though i prefer idea) rather than "conspiracy." I'm sure you can understand my point just like so from reading this request and from the wikepedia point is. Thankyou very much, 15yr old moderate conservative. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C6:D09A:B901:E8CF:DFAD:FF8:3DD9 (talk) 20:47, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. This kind of comment belongs on the Talk page of the article, which you can find here: Talk:Cultural marxism. You're welcome to add your comment there. Please note, that Wikipedia depends on what published, independent, secondary sources have to say about a topic, not what individual editors may think about it. When adding your comment to the Talk page, please keep in mind that you should be addressing how to improve the article, based on writings you have seen, and are able to cite. I edited the story about Cuomo and allowing infected patience back into nursing homes I was admonished and the story was reverted back now with Janice Dean, and other reports it appears that stories that are covering for corruption, injuries and deaths by liberals and democrats actually is being fraudulently cover upped, to protect a false imagine that appears to be what Wikipedia is now promoting not accurate and not honest neither equal always leaning and refusing to shed a light on journalism I hope you would look into the accuracy of hidden nursing home deaths and help correct the false narratives— Preceding unsigned comment added by Quotelawrence (talkcontribs) 3 June 2021 02:35 (UTC)

Hello. I'm sysop at IT wikipedia. Mediawiki:Noarticletext is it still in use? Because you can see that the message when you open a new page is different. Try temp2 for instance. Where (link?) @Pierpao: You can use the uselang=qqx option to show the names of the Mediawiki messages. So, at the English-language Wikipedia, this link shows that Mediawiki:Noarticletext is displayed. At the Italian Wikipedia, this link, at least for me, shows that various Visual Editor messages are displayed instead. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:09, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A red wikilink like temp2 makes an edit url like https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Temp2&action=edit&redlink=1 and displays MediaWiki:Newarticletext (which is customized with namespace dependent output at the English Wikipedia). It does not display Mediawiki:Noarticletext. That message is displayed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temp2, the url the page would have if it existed. While they should not have been there in the first place they should not continue to be exposed in the change history.

Regards.

P.S. It would be nice if entries that are no longer deemed 'encyclopedic' could just be moved to another feature like supplemental information rather than totally removing the information. The vCard wiki went from extremely useful to the current now almost worthless state, and all the contributed information is only in the change log. Can I update my own work as a non-free fair use work, such as photos or other files.Hmht45tgree3d (talk) 12:55, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Hmht45tgree3d: No. If you hold the copyright, you have no additional special rights to also provide it under fair use. If it can be uploaded by someone else under fair use (i.e., it meets all ten of the fair use criteria), then it could in theory also be uploaded by you under fair use, but you should NOT mention that you are the copyright holder in such a case, and arguably you should not upload it at all under fair use as you have a COI. "Fair use" is used by others in spite of your copyright, not by you because of your copyright. Since you are the copyright holder, you should either refrain from uploading it, or you should upload it under an acceptable license like CC-BY-SA. -Arch dude (talk) 14:07, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Citations about actor biographies

Hello, I'm a regular contributor from Turkish Wikipedia. There is currently a problem that actor biographies are being filled with citations as sensationalist "who is who" news media and websites having related names of biography, who is who and so on. Most are almost identical, copy-pasted from each other, and even funnily from Wikipedia page of that person himself/herself! I'm a hard time with many users about explaining their reliability, most often reasoning I come across is "but they are famous news websites". I'd love to learn how here deals with these kind of problems. Please inform me with policies, essays and discussions about this exact issue available here. I want them in order to see what is unclear about TRWiki's policies then discuss with others. Thank you.--Esmer Günler (talk) 14:19, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Esmer Günler! On en-WP, WP:Biographies of living persons and WP:PROPORTION would be relevant. WP:BLP is quite strict. We have noticeboards like WP:BLPN and WP:RSN to discuss what is fitting. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:15, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sister Sledge

The article about Sister Sledge has suffered repeat vandalism from a user who seemingly has a personal axe to grind about matters to do with the band's membership. They have now uploaded a file File:Sister sledge.pdf, which appears to be a pdf of a legal letter. Clearly this has no place on Wikipedia, but I don't know how to delete it - presumably someone with admin privileges needs to do so. Thanks - MFlet1 (talk) 17:33, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There are many thousands that still need articles! If you have a good head for taxonomy you will find that there are also a lot of plants that may exist under multiple scientific names that need an expert's help to disentangle. My suggestion: find a specialized book in your library, and then tackle plants genus by genus. I for example started it a while ago with Bouteloua, based on a book of the wild grasses of the Southwest. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 04:47, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can a child edit a parent's entry, providing appropriate citations?

I'm a VERY occasional WP editor. As it happens, my 93-year-old mother died recently, and I've just discovered that someone created a a WP page for her. She meets the "academic notability" criteria (item 6), because she "has held a highest-level elected or appointed administrative post at a major academic institution" (Academic Secretary to the Faculty Senate at Stanford University, roughly equivalent to Dean of the Faculty at other institutions). But there are minor errors in the current entry. I know of the general norm that individuals should not edit their own pages. But may I edit my mother's page without setting off disputes? I would, of course, provide appropriate citations for all information. Thanks.

Hi Blewenstein - first of all, please let me offer my condolences on your recent loss. It sounds like your mother was a remarkable person, you must be very proud of her. With regards to your question, as her child you have a conflict of interest with her, and so you would need to follow the guidance offered in those guidelines if you want to edit the page. If you're just fixing minor errors, and are able to cite reliable sources to support your changes, I don't see anybody minding. For more substantial changes, you might want to consider using an eit request on the talk page. Best GirthSummit (blether) 18:34, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Art Catalogue Reference

Hello,

I am wondering how I would use art catalogues for citation and references. Unlike a book that has an ISBN, these art catalogues are don't have those and many of them are very old. There are dates in which the catalogue was printed and used for specific showings but other than that there isn't a whole lot. I also have some recent ones from Long Island University and Korea University Museum but still wondering what information I need to put or look for to use it as a citation or reference.

I've seen a couple of examples in Henry Munyaradzi. I guess that the basic recommendation would be to place in ref tags whatever information you can find: as much as possible that will identify the catalogue were someone to try to verify its content. For recent catalogues, the website of the hosting venue probably will have a link to verify at least that an exhibition had been held. Mike Turnbull (talk) 19:58, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned articles

Hello! A task that I quite enjoy is de-orphaning articles but some of them are quite difficult. Like surnames. Which articles would you recommend I link to surnames? I did look on WP:DISAMBIGUATION, but I couldn't figure it out. Also, if one goes on Special:LonelyPages and scrolls down to the Cs, one will see many molecular-type things such as C11H16BrNO3. How does one deorphan those, too? Thank you. :) Abillionradios (talk) 02:41, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Most of these are disambiguation pages, and there's no reason that they should be linked to other pages. In most cases, other articles shouldn't need to link to disambiguation pages, as they should link to the article instead. See Wikipedia:Orphan#On disambiguation pages. Can you help as I havent a clue how to fix the problem

If you no longer have access to your old email account, there is no way to retrieve your old password. What people normally do in these circumstances is to create a new account and mention on their User Page that they have previously edited under another username, which I assume you can remember. If you can't remember the old account name, try looking in the History of articles you remember editing and seek out possibilities there. Good luck with your recovery. Archive Parameters in Cite Template

I am archiving a link with a Cite Template, but there are so many parameters and it's hard to check each of them. I know the consequence of parameters doesn't matter and it works all the time, but can you suggest me how to arrange them in the most-used or easiest-to-check order? Please include these:

1. url, archive-url, url-status
2. date, archive-date, access-date
3. title, autor, format, website, publisher, language

P.S. I am communicating with other users for the first time in the English wikipedia and I'm not native, so please understand me if my words are a bit awkard :) --Uconhe (talk) 14:52, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CITET has numerous examples, and yes, any parameter you don't use you can just leave out. You can also use the citation option in the edit window; it will create the citation template, with ref tags, for you. In general, it depends on the type of source. For print sources, I would consider author, title, and date to be the most vital, while for online sources I would add URL and access date to that. I used to code these all by hand back in the day, but to be honest I pretty much always use the "cite" tool in the menu at the top of the edit window now. It does a good job of prompting me to fill out the important stuff, and it leaves out any parameters I don't use, so as to cut down on unnecessary markup. --Jayron32 16:08, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jayron32: Thanks for helping me! I actually did use the menu, but I thought that there were no parameters about archived website in the tool menu. Since I noticed I can print them if I click the "Show/hide extra fields" button, I'll more use the menu instead of typing each of them! --Uconhe (talk) 00:29, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a redirect page

What is the proper way to create a redirect page? Also, what is the difference between using these two templates, below?

• #REDIRECT Target
• Target

Are they both doing the same exact thing? Or is there some distinction, as to when to use one versus the other? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:15, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

edit to add a photo

Hello I tried adding a photo to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Graham_(British_Army_officer)

However i don't know if it went through, when it asked for copyright etc. I chose the last option of not being sure.

The link to the photo is here: https://go.gale.com/ps/i.do?p=GDCS&u=acd_artemisp&v=2.1&it=r&id=GALE%7CGW3226340543&asid=1622952000000~a3aaedff

The photo was taken in 1915 so the website can't own rights to it?

It is the only photo I have found of the officer.

Can you please add it to the info for him if it didn't go through?

Regards Will.

@Will421: Howdy hello. So, in this case, the photo is in the public domain, meaning it is not copyrighted. Works published in the US before 1925 are not copyrighted anymore. So you can go ahead and try to upload it again, but this time note that its public domain :) CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 19:37, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
CaptainEek, Will421, the photo was published in Britain in 1915. According to my understanding of commons:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom, this puts it in the public domain; but I believe that Commons will require a specific PD template: "Template:PD-XYZ" (in which I don't know offhand what the XYZ should be). -- Hoary (talk) 23:16, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary, this is a photograph with a known author, [Madame Val?] L'Estrange, London, so my reading of the flowchart at http://web.archive.org/web/20110812112046/http://www.museumscopyright.org.uk/private.pdf is that the Standard copyright term applies, i.e. Life + 70 years. Or am I getting confused? TSventon (talk) 00:14, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If you're confused, TSventon, then you're less so than I was. I see plenty of mentions of "Val l'Estrange/L'Estrange", but no biographical details. Not knowing when she was born, I'd say that it's very likely that she died before 1951 ... but also that she didn't. So now the situation seems more confused! (Meanwhile, thank you for the link. Very useful.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:05, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary, I found the flowchart in footnote 8 of the Commons Copyright rules. The British Journal of Photography, Volume 74, Page 126 suggests that Mary Frances Hope was in business as Madame Val L'Estrange from 1908 to 1925. TSventon (talk) 02:02, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Good sleuthing, TSventon. If she set up her own business at the age of 28 (let's say), then in 1951 she'd have been 71, and very possibly alive. (Yes, for all I know she might have set up the biz at the age of 48, and therefore by 1951 was most likely dead.) -- Hoary (talk) 02:40, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary, the commons:Commons:Copyright rules#When the photographer is unknown says "Assume the most reasonable restrictive copyright barring evidence to the contrary", then gives an example where you assume the photographer was 20 when they took the picture and then dies in their nineties. So we need to assume the photograph is copyright unless the photographer's date of death can be found. TSventon (talk) 03:34, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon, that's just what I was (sadly) thinking. -- Hoary (talk) 05:12, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Will421: we have to assume the photo is copyright as discussed above. It might be possible to upload the photo to en Wikipedia rather than Commons under fair use. You could ask about this at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, where the volunteers should have more relevant experience. TSventon (talk) 12:36, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Accessing Page Content that was Deleted or Removed Through a Redirect

An article I authored about a music album was recently replaced by a page redirect that links to the album's performer. Is this about 13 Japanese Birds? If so, the history is still there. In general, you can access a redirect either by clicking on the link and then on "Redirected from <link here>" or by appending ?redirect=no to the redirect's URL. Victor Schmidt (talk) 18:08, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Look at the image on the right. There are some languages links, but there are something wrong. For example, 'Español' and 'Français'. These two languages must be their initials letter in lower case (Español must be español, and Français must be français). But now both are capitalised. How can I fix this? Thank you. --TKsdik8900 (talk) 06:27, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why would they need to be in lower case? The rest of the sidebar uses capital letters, no reason why the interlanguage links should use lower case for first letter. 'Español' and 'Français' are how I'd expect them to be written in English sentence case. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:45, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Likely because that is how the French and Spanish write the names of their own languages. MediaWiki returns the autonyms for the languages:
→ español
→ français
Isn't this is a Wikidata issue?
