How can I ask a question
Emma OSOLU (talk) 17:10, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- Emma OSOLU Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. I think that you just did ask a question, so you did fine. The one suggestion I would have is to place your question in the larger edit window, not the smaller section header window. Some people find it easier to use the full desktop version of Wikipedia, even in a browser on a device, instead of the app or mobile versions, which do not have full functionality(easily, at least). 331dot (talk) 17:14, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

It doesn't seem fair
A friend of mine wrote a page about me, but it has a warning for lack of notability. Are there volunteers who can help fix this? I've done a TEDMED talk, written four books and hundreds of articles. Had a segment about me on NPR's This American Life, and much much more, but I'm not notable??? I'm particularly puzzled because there are many people who seem less notable than I, who have pages without warnings -- for example, half my lawyer friends. I'm a lawyer with a Ph.D. in medical ethics -- the first to do a joint program with that combination that I know of and the first Westerner to go to Iran to study their organ selling programs extensively (extensively meaning hundred's of interviews, one anthropologist had done one day of interviews at one hospital). Why do I not qualify -- If the friend who wrote the page for me made mistakes, why doesn't someone help fix them, instead of making me seem like a self-promoting fraud with the warning boxes? Integrity1010 (talk) 19:46, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Integrity1010 Welcome to the Teahouse. You might care to tell us who you are so that we can look for sources that talk in detail about you. I'm afraid our Notability criteria for people demands to know, not what a person has done in their life, but what others have written about them. You would be welcome to link o a few of those sources so we can try to guide you further. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 19:55, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- Based on the description, I'm guessing Sigrid Fry-Revere (which does seem to have a lot of problems by our standards). Wikignome Wintergreentalk 19:58, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- This was tagged in Dec 2019, and had had dozens of edits since then. Perhaps Wikignome Wintergreen, a recent editor of the article will consider removing the tag. Neither you nor your friend should remove it (nor edit the article anymore). The article has been criticized for weak referencing and possibly not reaching the bar for notability. David notMD (talk) 20:28, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- I assume the notability standard here is WP:NACADEMIC, but I'm far from an expert in the notability area, and academics seem particularly tricky. I'll leave that decision to someone else, but I'll fix up the article in other ways. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 20:34, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- I've taken a quick look through the article and at some of the citations. I recognise that the article is currently being worked on, but my feeling is that the page comes over as an amazingly impressive CV of a person who has done some wonderful work on her field. I don't see sources that talk about her, as we would expect from independent sources to meet WP:NBIO. The past professorial position itself doesn't quite meet Criterion 5 of WP:NPROF on its own, yet I suspect the body of work she has produced in that and in subsequent roles could be deemed to have had a significant impact under criteria 1 or 7. But as this isn't an WP:AFD discussion, I don't need to go into more detail at this stage, though such a discussion would need further search for independent sources and could be borderline, despite her achievements. That said, I'd not be pushing for such a discussion, and would expect a fair bit of effort to go into WP:BEFORE. I think the notability template was not hugely unreasonable, and hopefully current efforts will help. Nick Moyes (talk) 22:33, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- "Borderline notable" - the hardest case to deal with. Basically, Integrity1010, it's hard to make a decision here without doing some significant research, and since we're all volunteers, there's no way to force anyone to do that research. As it stands, the article doesn't contain any good (by our standards) sources which prove beyond doubt that you're notable (by our standards), so the tag - for the moment - remains. If you think you have such sources, the best place for them is probably the article's talk page, Talk:Sigrid Fry-Revere, since this post on the Teahouse will get archived eventually. Not sure if I'm doing this right, putting my responses here. Yes, I'm Sigrid Fry-Revere. I'm also the first person to create a living organ donor advocacy group which was not run by organ recipients as a hidden way to get more people to become organ donors. My organization -- The American Living Organ Donor Fund actually advocated for living organ donors without any conflict of interest --- we didn't find donors for organ recipients. We helped living organ donors with information and helped them with expenses and lost wages -- something which at the time some people thought was illegal but now is part of the federally funded NLDAC program and many state and private programs as well. How many firsts does a person have to have to qualify as notable? Isn't the fact that I'm cited or quoted on Academia.com at least a few times a week and sometimes several times in a day worth something -- I'm part of a very important conversation -- so much so that people find it necessary to answer what I've written -- not the least of which is the research I did in Iran -- which by the way was accepted as part of the National Library of Medicine's permanent collection. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Integrity1010 (talk • contribs) 21:26, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

- The most important thing to note is that Wikipedia has a peculiar and specific conception of what notability means. It essentially means that you have "received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject." Somewhat different and more specific criteria apply for academics, but that is the basic principle - not having many firsts or doing important work. Zoozaz1 (talk) 01:31, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

So looking at just the first 7 pages of 148,000 entries for my name on Google, I found the following secondary sources. None of these are articles by me, nor are they simply citations or quotes. They are all more extensive discussions of my work and / or my life. I'm sure I could find at least another dozen more.
That search, that came up with 148,000 was "Sigrid Fry-Revere newspapers" -- because I was looking for articles about me. When I just search "Sigrid Revere" -- I get over a million hits.

- Integrity1010 have you read Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing? If an article about you is published it won't belong to you or to the friend who wrote it. Anyone with Internet access can find both flattering and unflattering references to you and edit the article. If you are determined to obtain your own Wikipedia article that will likely happen, but if you later decide you are not happy with changes in the article you will not be able to have it deleted.
- Please remember that, with the exception of a few paid editors (who are not paid by Wikipedia), most of the people connected with Wikipedia are volunteers who work in their spare time, and choose projects that interest them. If you provide all 148,000 entries on Google that does not mean that anyone will be obligated to improve the draft article about yourself.
- If being the subject of a Wikipedia subject is so very important to you I wish you well in having your dream fulfilled. Karenthewriter (talk) 04:20, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
- Good advice, though in this case it's not a draft - the article was created and moved to mainspace in 2008, when standards were laxer. Now either deleting or improving will take some effort. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 04:39, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
- That was a foolish mistake on my part, to state that the article was still a draft. I became confused by the long list of citations to be added, but I should have double checked the status before posting. Karenthewriter (talk) 08:19, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Content Translation
I was thinking around what I would do, then I found the Content Translation tool. I translated a Spanish article and it is here. What is to be done next?? Any suggestions.. Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 04:35, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Itcouldbepossible. There are a very large number of redlinks in this article, which may lead experienced editors to ask "what the heck is going on here"? Trim them way back. This biography of a living person has only a single reference, whose reliability I cannot fully evaluate because I am not fluent in Spanish. I do, however, know that the expectation is that there will be multiple references to reliable, independent sources devoting significant coverage to a person before an article like this can be considered a acceptable. So, trim the redlinks and improve the references. Translations are welcomed but it is your responsibility as a translator to ensure that your translation complies with the same policies and guidelines thst all other articles are expected to comply with. Cullen328 (talk) 04:55, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks @Cullen328 for your helping hand. I removed the redlinks. But for the references you may go [1] here and see that the spanish article also has only one reference. Well I know that living biographies cannot have only one reference, but to say the truth, that article has one reference in the spanish wikipedia, so where should I find more references. Please guide me in this prospect. Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 05:34, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Cullen328 I made a request to their Teahouse (see this[2]), seeking help for finding resources. Hope they help. Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 05:43, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Also, you shouldn't just dump google translations on here. Machine translations are often unreliable and in this case the sentences don't even read correctly. If you don't know the other language to verify the content and make the necessary modifications, you shouldn't do it. —SpacemanSpiff 05:47, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Itcouldbepossible. The fact that the es-wiki article is under-referenced is a problem for es-wiki. We too have thousands and thousands and thousands of articles which are seriously substandard, and would not be acceptable today; but few people are interested in spending the time to improve or delete them, so they remain. We do not now accept new articles into English Wikipedia unless they meet our current standards, irrespective of whether they are entirely new or a translation. --ColinFine (talk) 09:54, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- @ColinFine Thanks, actually I did not know these things, so I started translating the page. So then the article would be a complete waste of work. Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 10:09, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Itcouldbepossible: the thing to do is to look at the original article and its subject, and decide if it looks genuinely notable. If so, hunt out some sources. It's not a waste of work, but you need to make sure that the translation is a genuinely good article, in good writing, with good sources, and not just a google-translate of an article that was probably inadequate in the Spanish WP. Someone wise here advised me that translations don't have to be exact. You can use as much or as little of the other WP article as you want (though of course follow the instructions on translation and credit it!) - so if you can find some sources that back up part of what the Spanish article says, while other bits look wobbly, just translate and use the good stuff. Elemimele (talk) 11:19, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Yes – and it is also worth stressing that the tool is called "content translation", so it is intended to help editors get some idea of the content (facts), while the form (vocabulary, phrasing, syntax) needs to be created by the editor without trusting the tool. --bonadea contributions talk 14:53, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Itcouldbepossible have you gone through the short training tutorial Wikipedia Adventure? It may also help to read Introduction and Your First Article. Your attempt at translating a Spanish article wasn't a waste of time if you learned from it. I've been a Wikipedia editor since 2007 and I'm still learning. That learning is often by trying something that didn't work, and then figuring out what I did wrong, so that I'll do it correctly the next time. Best wishes on your work on Wikipedia. - Itcouldbepossible I don't know what equipment you're using (computer, electronic tablet, cell phone), but I am using an outdated Mac laptop, and this is how things work for me. A few minutes ago I clicked on the Wikipedia Adventure link. When that link came up, I went to the bottom of the page and clicked on Mission 1. A white box came up, I read what's in the box, then clicked on the blue box titled "Get Equipment for the trip". That brought up another white box. I read that box, and clicked on the new blue box titled "Come with me..."
- Since I've already gone through The Wikipedia Adventure I didn't go any further tonight. There will be different projects to try, such as editing and adding citations. I believe when I finished Mission 1 I went back to the beginning page, and then clicked on Mission 2. I read white boxes, and clicked on blue boxes, just as I did for the first mission. Did you click on Mission 1? If so, what happened when you did? Perhaps if you are having some difficulty with the English language you may not be understanding all of the instructions written in the white boxes. You may want to try again on another day, and then be able to go through the different missions. Karenthewriter (talk) 04:29, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Karenthewriter Ok thanks for the help. Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 04:32, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Karenthewriter At a point of time, an instruction comes and says "click edit source" to add the content. After clicking edit source, and adding the content, nothing happens. It continues to give the same instructions. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong?? Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 07:41, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- Itcouldbepossible where are you in the tutorial? Are you on Mission 1, Mission 2? Are you at the beginning, middle or end of that mission? When I have the time I will go to that part of the instructions and tell you what I did, but I need to know where you are having the problem.
- I ask a favor of you. When you are asking for my help please only add one question mark (?) at the end of a sentence. Though you couldn't know this, sloppy punctuation annoys me. Karenthewriter (talk) 14:43, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Karenthewriter Sorry, it is my bad habit to add many "?" at the end of my question. Yes, you taught me a new thing. And talking about the Wikipedia Adventure, I am at mission 1, and am having problems, when they instruct me to "click edit source", and even if I add the things they want, they don't give any further instruction. Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 03:31, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Itcouldbepossible the lessons must be old, written before some things were changed. I was confused about clicking on "edit source", so clicked on "edit" instead. I didn't want to change my own user page, but did what was told (except I didn't link anything), and went back and reverted things afterwards. It did appear that I was asked twice to do the same instructions about bolding, italicizing, etc., but I clicked a second time that it was done, and was sent to the next step. At the end I was told to "save", but that is now called "publish changes" so that's what I clicked on. I was then told "Mission 1 complete!" and there was a blue box saying "Go on to mission 2", but I clicked on an option to take a rest (or some such words) and got out of the Adventure. I would have to click on Wikipedia Adventure again if I wanted to do Mission 2. It is a rather awkward tutorial, and may have a few bugs so that you're asked a second time to do things. I'm sorry that it doesn't work better. Karenthewriter (talk) 04:27, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Karenthewriter No, actually they ask me to write something, then when I write it, then nothing else happens. It just says, "click edit source". And thats all. Itcouldbepossible (Talk) (Contributions) (Log) 06:30, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Changing an Article Title
Title change request
Hi there, currently I am working on the article stub entitled 'Australian Aboriginal Progress Association' and I came across a problem. After doing some research I noticed that the title of the organisation is actually 'Australian Aboriginal Progressive Association', rather than 'progress'. Could you confirm or deny this by any chance? As the sources I have found have led me to believe the title of the article is wrong and I was wondering if changing it is an option. Bwal6418 (talk) 11:27, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Bwal6418. The best place to discuss such a thing is probably going to be a Talk:Australian Aboriginal Progress Association because that's where you're likely to find editors who might be familiar with the subject matter. Basically, if the title is incorrect, then the page can be WP:MOVEd to a new title; however, it's probably a good idea to at least discuss things first on the article talk page before trying to move the page yourself. - Oriental Goldbulb Rather like driving a car, it's best to set off slowly because Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia controlled by quite a lot of 'rules of the road'. Providing you don't simply add "stuff that you happen to know", you might find looking at articles in or around your home town or favourite place might be worthy doing first. You'll get a feeling of how articles have been written, perhaps spotting typos or other small fixes which you can correct. Making sure the written English flows easily and is gramatically correct is almost as important as goof, factual content. You might find certain statement have [citation needed] written after them, which means we need to find a Reliable Source to insert to support that statement. In time, you might feel confident to add one via the 'Cite' button. You could visit Help:Introduction for further guidance, or come back here if you hit problems. Because it's easy to make mistakes, you might feel other road users appear abrupt with you if you do mess up. But rather than bite back, take a moment to work out what you might have done wrong and keep on the correct side of the road to avoid confrontation. We work by collaboration and consensus, so engaging with other editors is quite normal - as is following what other users advise you to do. That way you'll be helping to build the worlds greatest online encyclopaedia. Good luck, and enjoy the ride. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:46, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

How to submit a copyright and retrieve deleted article
Hello,
I contributed an article titled, "ot9 Beno". I am an intern for the artist camp and the manager wants the contribution to match his website. ot9beno.com Ceciwrites (talk) 07:48, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Ceciwrites. Comply immediately with the mandatory Paid contribution disclosure or you may well be blocked. Your boss's wish to have a Wikipedia article "match" his website is an arrogant fantasy that will never become true. This is an encyclopedia, not a website mirror. You have two choices: Resign or push back against these unreasonable demands. Good luck. You are in a difficult position. Cullen328 (talk) 08:01, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Cullen328. I AM NOT PAID TO CONTRIBUTE. I AM AN INTERN/FAN, MY ARTICLE IS IN THE SANDBOX, AND IT HASN'T BEEN PUBLISHED. I AM SEEKING ADVICE BEFORE DOING SO. THANK YOU SIR FOR YOUR KIND AND HELPFUL WORDS. CECIWRITES 09:01, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Ceciwrites, according to Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure#Additional notes on who must disclose, interns are considered employees for the purpose of this requirement. Cordless Larry (talk) 09:08, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Ceciwrites: At the moment the article is in your sandbox, User:Ceciwrites/sandbox. As it is now, it is nowhere near being acceptable as a Wikipedia article. You will need to explain to your manager that Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, where editors write articles that summarize what the best available independent sources have to say about a subject - not what those subjects want said about them.--Gronk Oz (talk) 08:20, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Gronk Oz: Got it thank you. CECIWRITES 09:02, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @CECIWRITES: Your sandbox is an exact copy of http://ot9beno.com/about/ . I know you said above that your manager asked for the Wikipedia article to "match" the website, but that does not mean that the copyright on the ot9beno.com no longer exists. Your previous draft was deleted as a copyright violation, and I'm afraid your sandbox will also have to be deleted. More info on your user talk page. --bonadea contributions talk 09:26, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Gronk Oz: I have permission to post it. So that my self and the rest of his fans can know more about him and everyone can add on to his page once its started. I have found the CC license. but not sure about the GNU license. Also is the licensing something they would do? & can I still write this in general? CECIWRITES 10:02, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Two things: You still haven't complied with the mandatory requirement to disclose your paid status. You need to do that before you make any other edits. Secondly, even if that text is released from copyright it is not appropriate for Wikipedia, so don't waste your time by investigating how the text can be donated. --bonadea contributions talk 09:59, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- And a third thing, actually – your signature needs to contain a link to your user page and/or talk page. Your all-caps signature points at User:CECIWRITES, which is not a registered user – links to names are case sensitive. --bonadea contributions talk 10:03, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

- (edit conflict)@Ceciwrites: The copyright holder of the website is going to need to be the one to release it under a free license that Wikipedia accepts; however, given that most websites are written in a tone that is too promotional for Wikipedia's purposes, it's highly likely that the content would need to be written for any of it to be considered OK to use on Wikipedia even if it was freely licensed. Generally, Wikipedia editors are expected to summarize in their own words what they read about subjects in reliable sources and then cite those sources in support so that the content can be verified; trying to simply copy-and-paste large blocks of external website content onto any Wikipedia page is almost always not going to be considered OK to do. If you would like to try and create a draft about this person, then you can; you are, however, going to need to demonstrate that they meet Wikipedia:Notability (people) for any draft to have a chance of being accepted as an article. You might also want to take a look at Wikipedia:Ownership of content, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing for reference because it sounds like whomever asked you to create this article doesn't really understand how Wikipedia works at all. Problems when referring to another Wiki page in this format ... when editing
Hello...
I have been having problems editing a Wiki page in the normal way [[....]] in source editing so that when clicking the highlighted name (in blue), it will lead to the quoted Wiki page.
The edited term instead appears in red.. indicating the page is not yet created/available. However, when I search the term, the page is already there.
Please assist.

- Hello, Volten0001, and welcome to the Teahouse. You haven't told us which article you are trying to link to, but the usual reason for this is that the case of the letters does not match. The case must match exactly, except for the first letter. Also, any accents, punctuation, spaces etc must match. If you still can't see the problem, copy and post the exact string you are putting between the brackets here and we can look. (I put <nowiki> round your example, so that what you typed would appear.)--ColinFine (talk) 12:41, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
India article
I saw articles about USA, England and Australia have sub-section for Education and Sports but this India article doesn't have. I suggest to create seperate sub-sections for this. Images used in that article also looks low quality, outdated and do not represent true India, only showing unhygienic, poor side of India. Newton Euro (talk) 10:01, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Newton Euro: welcome to the Teahouse. The article India does actually have these sub-sections: India#Education and India#Sports and recreation, both of them sub-sections of India#Culture. In the article about Australia, the sub-section Australia#Education is under Australia#Demographics, while Australia#Sport and recreation can be found under Australia#Culture. USA has the same structure as the article about Australia, with education under demographics, and sports under culture, but England has a different structure again, with education and sports as separate sections that are not under culture, nor under demographics. I don't know why the structure of these articles are different, but the sub-sections are there in each of them.
- If you want to suggest different images, Talk:India is the place to do that. Regards, --bonadea contributions talk 10:54, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
@Bonadea and Bonadea: I think we have to follow England structure. #Education section of India is not well developed and is very short.Newton Euro (talk) 11:08, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Newton Euro, it seems that you had already posted your suggestion to Talk:India when you started this message thread. When you post a suggestion on an article's talk page, there's no need to bring up the matter here as well. -- Hoary (talk) 11:32, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Newton Euro keep in mind that there is also an entire article about Education in India. Take care not to "overload" the section with too much detail. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:51, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Long standing citation requests
While reading Wikipedia articles I often come across long standing citation requests and other template warnings. For example, on the Sheffield Steelers page some of the citation needed requests date back to 2007 and the recentism template was placed there in 2009. The article is being updated but 'warnings' ignored. Surely such longstanding 'requests for action' reflect badly on Wikipedia. I have little interest in the subject matter and so wouldn't want to spend time trying to find sources to validate these passages. The talk page looks moribund so I think things are unlikely to be resolved by commenting and seeking a consensus there. The choice for me is to ignore and move on or delete the 'offending' lines and remove the citation needed warning. What are people's views here? Rupples (talk) 15:11, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Welcome to the Teahouse Rupples. You raise a very good point. Per WP:V "Any material lacking an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports the material may be removed and should not be restored without an inline citation to a reliable source". If it has been a while and there have been no constructive suggestions on the talk page, I suggest you remove one statement at a time, and see whether other editors swing into action with some references.--Shantavira|feed me 15:51, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Not enough sources?
A writer friend of mine recently attempted to start a Wiki article about me. I am a musician and although I am mentioned in other people’s pages, there is no entry for me personally. There are a number of stories and interviews in newspapers about me (both physical and virtual ones), plus of course anything can be verified by checking websites of artists, album liner notes, or seeing me perform with various famous people on YouTube etc etc. Seems to be fairly easily verifiable stuff, yet he got the message that “there were not enough verifiable sources “. He added a few more (does Wiki accept its OWN pages as verifiable sources?) and then got a message that maybe it’s “under review” or something to that effect. So it has been neither accepted nor rejected at this point. Not sure what to do from here. Appreciate anyone that can shed some light on this or suggest what to do now. Just wait? Or have yet another person that knows me write another article? I saw other people being asked what their name is on here so maybe I should put my name. It’s Jay Collins. Thanks. Jaybird1968 (talk) 15:59, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Jaybird1968, and welcome to the Teahouse. Because Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia (rather than social media, or a business directory) we require that articles be almost entirely based on what has been published in reliable sources unconnected with the subject. This means that in order for an article about you to be possible, several people, wholly unconnected with you and not fed information by or on behalf of you, must have chosen to write at some length about you and been published in places with a reputation for fact-checking and editorial control. This means that nothing published by you or your associates, nothing in user-generated sources such as blogs, social media, or wikis (including Wikipedia!) and nothing primarily based on your words - interviews or press releases - can contribute to this. Most artists, even professional ones, do not meet these criteria, and we therefore do not have articles about them, even if they are mentioned in other articles. (I am mentioned in an article, because I once did something remarkable, but not enough has been written about me to ground an article about me). If you or your friend can find sources to establish that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability (essentially what I explained above) then there can be an article about you. Your friend is discouraged from writing it, because of their conflict of interest, and also because writing an article is a very challenging task for a new Wikipedia editor (even if they have experience as a writer) and I always advise spending a few months learning the trade by editing existing articles first. But if you do meet the criteria, then your friend may create a draft - see your first article. If you do not, they will be wasting their time trying. --ColinFine (talk) 16:24, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Courtesy link: Draft:Jay Collins (musician) - this seems to be the relevant draft. Alerting its creator, WoodieAlan, who - based on their user name and contributions - may also have a COI with Alan Paul (author). Wikignome Wintergreentalk 16:52, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Can I upload photos without it going to Wikipedia commons

Page doesn't exist?
Hello, about 5 months ago I wrote a Wikipedia article on Joanna Langfield, who is a well known movie critic having been on the radio for nearly 40 years now. She's also my mother. Unfortunately the article still has not been published and am not sure why.
Whenever I click on the link through my account, it says the page does not exist.
I admitted the conflict of interest, I'm obviously doing this for free and made sure everything was linked and uploaded pictures to show that everything that was written is true.
Is there anything more I can do to make sure the page gets published?
Thank you. GregWikiMake (talk) 17:16, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Trail972 (talk) 18:48, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- See above, Trail972 - the template has already been removed by someone who read your post here. If you have a photo for the page that is appropriately licensed, it will need to be uploaded either to Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons. It will then be assigned a filename, etc. Commons is the preferred place for a number of reasons, but they can't host non-free files. What is the copyright status of the image you want to use? Wikignome Wintergreentalk 18:55, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- If it's this one, I don't think we can use it, but I'm not well-versed in the labyrinth of copyright law. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 19:12, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Yes, it's that one. Library of Congress doesn't think Acme Photo registered a copyright on it, but it would take some research to find out for sure. Part of New York World photograph collection given to the LOC.Trail972 (talk) 20:32, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- There's already a picture in the article, but I see that it's been nominated for deletion on Commons because there are doubts about its copyright status; I don't know what the outcome will be. Copyright is a very serious issue around here, and in the absence of good evidence to the contrary, our default assumption is that a work is indeed under copyright. @Fossiladder13: I have added a draft template to your draft, which gives you a blue button at the bottom right corner of the draft box (very obvious at the start of the article), which you can click to submit it. Can we use podcasts as a citation/source? Prodjex (talk) 19:07, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Prodjex welcome to Tea House and thank you for your question! In short, yes under very narrow circumstances. Either because the podcast is scholarly in itself, for example in a neutral, scholarly tone or because the individuals speaking on it are subject experts themselves, per WP:SELFPUBLISH. Happy editing and 'casting! ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 19:14, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Shushugah thank you very much for your response, I appreciate the information. Sorry, I should have been more specific in my initial question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prodjex (talk • contribs) 22:28, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, Prodjex, those would come under WP:SELFPUBLISH as Shushugah said, so you could cite them but only for the limited kinds of information explained there. This is assuming that the podcast was by the speaker or somebody associated with them. Otherwise, it would need to be a reliable source, i.e. published by somebody with a reputation for fact-checking abd editorial control to be considered at all. --ColinFine (talk) 22:38, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

- I agree with Nick, Rush Owen, and I would further point out that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. For almost every single statement in your draft you need to ask, Where has somebody unconnected with Hatch published this information? If the answer is "nowhere", then it doesn't belong in any Wikipedia article. The exceptions are uncontroversial factual information like dates and places, where self-published sources connected with Hatch are acceptable. But no information should be in the article unless it has been published somewhere.
- My suggestion (which I regularly give to new editors who attempt the very difficult task of creating a new article) would be to put Hatch aside for a few months while you "learn the trade" of editing Wikipedia, and how articles are shaped, by improving some of our six million existing articles. --ColinFine (talk) 22:47, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Expand the article use of non-free image
Hello is it possible to expand the use of the non-free picture in Tigist Shibabaw in another article for example Amhara people, for a (Amharic) music section there? Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 22:20, 4 December 2021 (UTC) Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 22:20, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

- @Jéské Couriano: in a similar fashion as the literature section [[3]], i would like to create a music section with different Amharic musicians of different era's, i would like to keep it balanced 50/50 men/women ratio and preferably with more established female names, as you can see here i have some difficulties here, one is not very notable and another is average. I have considered uploading non-free images of prominent deceased performers Asnaketch Worku & Bizunesh Bekele, but if i can't use it for the purpose of the music section(Amharic music), then i might upload it at a later for their own articles. Strange enough other established and alive names don't have pictures even though there are just as many articles as their male counterparts. Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 22:55, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- And Tigist Shibabaw sings in Amharic, in a hip-hop/funk genre which she represent. Others are traditional Amharic folk musicians, Ethio-jazz & blues musicians, Amharic pop etc. Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 23:05, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- I believe the answer is no, because it fails WP:NFCC#1, as there are free equivalent images (of other relevant people). Joseph2302 (talk) 23:58, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

Just say no
John Keller, the visual editor is indeed simpler -- until you realize that no it isn't. I recommend that you try again to edit the "source" (or "Wikitext"). Using it to create tables is a pain. For anything else, it's easy. Hit your Enter key twice in order to start a new paragraph. Never start a new line with one or more spaces. Two apostrophes immediately before and immediately after anything that should be italicized. Two equals signs immediately before and immediately after a heading of highest importance (such as "Accessing the visual editor", above), three of them for a heading of less importance (such as "Just say no", above). Doubled square brackets around a link. Oh, and references. These are of supreme importance, but I suggest that you spend a little time reworking existing prose, and only then add new material, of course with references. That's about it. There is a little more, but you'll pick it up as you go along. -- Hoary (talk) 01:44, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

- I, too, endorse the use of the source editor. It is criticized as being old fashioned and difficult to use. Yes, it is old but old is not necessarily bad. Although I have been using personal computers since the late 1970s, I have never been a professional programmer. I am a "learn as I go" guy and I had no problem learning wikitext or wikicode or whatever you want to call it. It is logical, intuitive and not at all difficult for people with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Cullen328 (talk) 08:41, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- @John Keller Are you aware that you can set your own individual Preferences for which of the two editing tools you are offered? Use the Preferences link at the very top of the page. In the 'Editing' tab look for 'Editing mode' and select Show me both editor tabs from the dropdown option box, then hit Save at the bottom of the page. Like many others, I only really use Visual Editor for entering information into tables, and stick to WP:Source Editor for everything else. Nick Moyes (talk) 14:46, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- @talk Thanks! I found the option to show both editing modes now. And I notice that for some wikiplaces (like here) only the edit source is available. I am getting used to it. John Keller (talk) 03:12, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

This should bring up the version that you want to restore. Check it out and if it is OK, save it with an edit summary like "Restore to version before (vandalism) (disruptive editing) (copyright violation)" or whatever is most accurate. - I don't know where the character from File:Drawing UwU.png comes from but https://www.deviantart.com/freypagani/art/Three-Fixes-cartoons-in-reality-891396671 features the same background so I doubt you created it. Outline of chocolate - is this really a style of article we have?
I came across the article Outline of chocolate, and it struck me as kind of odd. I've been editing for a few years, but this is a style of article I've never come across - it's almost a list, but it isn't, and it's not a general overview of chocolate like you'd expect from the, well, chocolate article. One of the headers is just a question, which I don't think is in the manual of style.
I'm familiar with generic overviews that then link off to more detailed articles - Japanese clothing is one. I suppose it's just an article titled "Outline of ___" that's stumped me.
Sorry if this seems like a silly question - but do we really format generic outline articles like this? It seems like its content ought to be subsumed elsewhere, is all. --Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) ({{ping}} me!) 14:24, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- We have loads of "Outline of..." articles. There was a handful of editors who liked doing them, led by User:The Transhumanist, who did most of this one. This is typical in getting very few views, av. 17 per day. I've never found them any use myself, & I think production of new ones has now largely stopped, but arguably they do little harm. Johnbod (talk) 14:41, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- I quite like it! If you imagine someone wrote a book on the subject of chocolate, this outline would be the contents page. But I suppose these things are a matter of taste; I personally don't find categories useful, but a lot of people adore them. Anything is probably good, if it helps some group, somewhere, find the information they want. Elemimele (talk) 17:12, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

PageImages
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janssen_COVID-19_vaccine
The page image for the above page is not of the actual vaccine (vial) like with other Covid-19 vaccine pages.
I tried to change the proportions of the image to appease the PageImages extension as outlined in the following pages:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:PageImages#Image_choice
However the page image is still the generic image of the coronavirus instead of the vaccine.
Is this due to the fact that the picture of the vial is made available under the Creative Commons Public Domain Mark 1.0 and images marked as public domain cannot be used for page images or is there something else I am missing here?
Thank you. Ryebreadforscale (talk) 17:43, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- Ryebreadforscale, you puzzle me. (And perhaps the lack of other responses suggests that you puzzle other people here too.) You changed the image from one cropped version to another cropped version of a photo in the public domain. (Both, and many other images, are in this category.) Neither is, or as far as I understand ever was, a "generic image of the coronavirus". Instead, both show what appears to be an actual vial of the stuff. (Are you suggesting that it's instead a mock-up of some kind?) The picture of the vial is indeed "made available under the Creative Commons Public Domain Mark 1.0", in other words, explicitly donated to the public domain. If we ignore a few factors (notably personality rights) that clearly are irrelevant in this case, Wikimedia/Wikipedia can do what it likes with images that are in the public domain. -- Hoary (talk) 23:10, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- I think they're talking about the preview image for Janssen COVID-19 vaccine - when I hover over that link with my mouse, I do indeed get the virus image instead of the vaccine vial. I have no idea what controls that selection, though. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 23:35, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

Dr Vincent Covello (talk) 02:26, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello Dr Vincent Covello and welcome to the Teahouse. First off, this account has no listed contributions except your post here and to your talk page. Are you sure you were logged in while making these changes? Second, if you are not actually Dr Vincent Covello, you should not be using his name as the name of your account; you can either request a new name or drop this account entirely in favor of a new one. Third, I'm not sure what you mean by "they are his" pictures - did he take them? If not, did the photographer legally transfer the copyright to him? In any case, since you do not own the copyright, you can't upload them. Only the copyright holder can do that. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 02:36, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- I can't find any evidence that an article titled "Dr Vincent Covello" or "Vincent Covello" was ever published. So you're doing something wrong I think? But I'm not sure what. Did you get any kind of error messages?
- For the uploading of files, sometimes there's a field that you forgot to fill in? It won't upload if you don't. More info on what exactly kind of error message you are getting would help.
- If you are Vincent Covello and are writing about yourself, I wouldn't. Basically it is conflict-of-interest (see WP:COI). It's not absolutely disallowed, but as a practical matter the article will very likely be deleted right off and everyone's time is waste. We are wary of self-promotion and autobiographical articles can tend hagiographic. You can try WP:articles for creation maybe.
- Perhaps some articles on another subject would give you useful experience? The large city of Calabar could use more articles on its public spaces and institutions, for instance. Herostratus (talk) 02:56, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Help please
I added info about Woody and cosplay in the Woody (Toy Story) article in the section impact, and its not appearing and now it says error on the screen does anyone know how to fix this? ― Kaleeb18Talk 02:51, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- It's fixed, Kaleeb18. The ref for the previous sentence was missing a closing tag, so when you finally added a closing tag at the end of your edit, everything in-between vanished. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 02:55, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, thank you! ― Kaleeb18Talk 02:57, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Hello
Is there any template that I can use for informing a wiki user that he or she is rampantly uploading derivative work in Wikipedia and in Wikipedia Commons? Thanks. NewManila2000 (talk) 03:37, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- @NewManila2000: What exactly do you mean by derivative works? How much is "rampant"? If you nominate them for deletion via Twinkle, it'll automatically send a template message to the user that uploaded that file. Since template messages are often too broad, consider leaving a more personalized message on that user's talk page, describing in detail the issue at hand. ◢ Ganbaruby! (talk) 08:39, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
As per the article derivative work, it refers to a expressive creation of a work that includes major copyrightable elements of an original, previously created first work (the underlying work) and maybe subjected to copyright. Oh, by the way, I am currently dealing with a wiki user regarding the issue. I inserted the word "rampant" because I had observed that he is still doing it. Deleting incorrect language link to another article
Hello everyone! Upon reading the Land value tax article on the English Wikipedia I opened its link for the Spanish Wikipedia version of the article, but it's about a different, nationally specific topic ES Wikipedia: Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles. I believe there is no article on Land Value Tax in the Spanish Wikipedia. Most of the links of the Spanish Wikipedia article to other languages are to topics about Land Value Tax and not the Spanish (from Spain) Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles. How can you delete all these incorrect links and instead link them to a new article? Thank you for your attention Bljrd (talk) 03:41, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Bljrd: Interlanguage links are handled by Wikidata, Wikipedia's sister project. You can see the Wikidata entry by clicking the "Wikidata item" link on the left sidebar, where you'll find all the Wikipedia articles that link to it on the right, in a box titled "Wikipedia". Wikidata also has a help desk at wikidata:Wikidata:Project chat. ◢ Ganbaruby! (talk) 08:47, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
I can’t use web pages like YouTube channels? For my reference?
Hello, can’t I use YouTube my personal channels or another YouTube channels for my article? Like if the article is about actor - I wanted to share his film as a webpage in the reference ,? So Wikipedia declined my article. Because I have use YouTube?? GJAHANA (talk) 04:45, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- You should read WP:YOUTUBE. WhoAteMyButter (📨talk│📝contribs) 04:54, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) hi GJAHANA! generally you cannot use a youtube page as a reference to establish notability as these require to be independent of the subject in question. however it may be possible to use an official site as a external link instead of a reference, placed in the external links section. happy editing! melecie t - 04:56, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Its beginning to look a lot like CE
I now understand mostly how to go about and fix CE on wikipedia. May i ask one thing, that someone please make me a custom signature to go along with my name? I would quite enjoy it. Presumably grey and red. I hope to continue fixing copy edit and improving Suggestbot articles. Thank you. You'vegotmail27 (talk) 05:08, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- You'vegotmail27, your current signature is just fine. Please continue improving articles: you'll be respected for the work that you do, not for the prettiness of your signature. -- Hoary (talk) 07:30, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Self-published websites.
I have been advised to not use a self-published website as a reference. I dont understand this. What is an example of a website that is NOT self-published?John Keller (talk) 05:41, 6 December 2021 (UTC) John Keller (talk) 05:41, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, John Keller, websites of respected media organizations that have a group of reporters, a team of editors, and ownership that does not make editorial decisions is not "self published". A university website with an elaborate review process for all of its content is not "self published". An book whose content is available online and is published by a major publishing house that reviews the text of each book with a fine toothed comb is not "self published". Websites that are basically a one person shows are self published. Cullen328 (talk) 06:14, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Cullen328, thanks for your reply. I would have thought that a university website is published by that university! So maybe "self-published" is not exactly what it means. (At first i thought it just meant published by myself.) Anyway, if i wanted to write an article on "Proposed Music Notation Reforms", as written about in the book by Gardner Read, would the website which itemises many of these systems (musicnotation.org) be an allowed reference, in your opinion? (I don't own this website.) My own opinion would be that anyone looking up this topic would be grateful to see examples of some of these proposed systems. I would appreciate your thoughts. John Keller (talk) 06:52, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- John Keller, I see that Gardner Read was a scholar of music who wrote about notation and who died in 2005. So, his work cannot be used as a reliable source for any developments since 2005 or that he did not discuss. If you are here to promote your own original research, then I need to advise you to stop. Experienced general Wikipedia editors take a very dim view of self-promotion, so please be very cautious. Cullen328 (talk) 07:03, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- So my question is whether musicnotation.org could be cited. It is basically a continuation of Read's collection of alternative proposals. Now you are confusing me. Surely people who write articles, or edit them, have done "research" on the topic! John Keller (talk) 07:27, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- As somebody who knows far more than most about alternative notation systems, John Keller, you are well qualified to summarize material about this from sources to which you don't contribute (and that aren't rivals). Used carefully, musicnotation.org looks as if it could be a worthwhile source: if so, it should be cited by editors who don't contribute to it (and aren't rivals). As for the research matter, I have contributed to a number of articles. I can't claim that my contributions have been particularly praiseworthy, but they've seldom aroused reversions, deletions or complaints. I have conducted no research whatever in most of the areas, and on the rare occasion when I have conducted a tiny amount of research I have been careful not to cite this. If this notion seems ridiculous or makes you indignant, then this website isn't for you. -- Hoary (talk) 08:08, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for your opinion Hoary. I think we have a different sense of the word "research". People who write on a topic, have researched it. Otherwise they would have no knowledge to contribute. (Except grammar etc.) Yes, I have knowledge of alternative music systems, and my own system has been accepted onto the website. If this makes me ineligible to contribute to the Wikipedia article, would you be kind enough to add the link yourself, not to my system, but just to the website? As you say, it could be a worthwhile source; it is probably the only non-partisan site describing such alternative systems. I feel awful that just because I tried to add something, all the previous references have now been deleted. And the one example that is left in, is not an appropriate example anyway! Without a reference, the whole article is rather pointless. John Keller (talk) 10:27, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Marking for deletion
How do I mark an article for deletion? I would like to mark the page of the Jakarta ePrix for deletion. RemoteMyBeloved (talk) 07:56, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- You don't mark it for deletion, RemoteMyBeloved. Rather, you first read Wikipedia:Deletion policy to see if policy requires that it should be deleted. If it does, then you carefully follow the recipe for suggesting deletion that you'll find at Template:AfD in 3 steps. Then other users see if they agree with you that deletion is appropriate. If the consensus is that yes it is, then the article is deleted. (If this sounds horribly complex, yes it is. But practice will speed up your part in the process.) -- Hoary (talk) 08:16, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
SALIM SAAD UHURU
What is wrong with my article for submission Leonahnana (talk) 08:11, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- You provide Draft:Salim Saad Uhuru with no references; so for all the reader knows, the whole draft could be mere fiction. Can you cite three sources that discuss the man in depth? If you can't, no article can be produced. -- Hoary (talk) 08:19, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Where to start editing
where should i start editing? Commonwanderer (talk) 09:20, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- You've already made plenty of edits, Commonwanderer, to articles about South Korean TV series. Well, a subject about which you have reliable sources which you understand and can cite. If you have reliable sources about South Korean TV series (a subject about which I know nothing whatever), then why not continue there? -- Hoary (talk) 09:31, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

How do I start a new page on Wikipedia?
I want to start a new entry on Wikipedia for a bio on someone. When I go to the article wizard, all I get is a blank page. It expects me to write in some sort of computer based language, of which I have no knowledge. I do not see the wizard to prompt me through the various steps of the bio like a template. Please can someone assist me. Mysky2blue (talk) 10:48, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Mysky2blue, and welcome to the Teahouse and Wikipedia. There is no template in that sense - structuring the page is the easy part of writing an article. The difficult and much much much more important part is finding the independent sources, and accurately summarising what those sources say. You can find more information in my first article. I always advise new editors who try to plunge straight in to the extremely difficult task of creating a Wikipedia article to put that idea aside for a few months, and learn how Wikipedia works by improving some of our six million existing articles. Doing that is likely to save you much frustration and possibly some wasted work. --ColinFine (talk) 11:00, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
- The language is called wikitext, and basic formatting is not all that hard (see Help:Cheatsheet), but you can use the visual editor as well. Kleinpecan (talk) 11:04, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
thank you very much, Colin.
