:A less controversial approach, depending on the sentence in question, would be to replace the external links with Wiki links (I see that AT&T and SBC are linked to their Wiki pages, for example). Don't worry if it becomes a red link; that's acceptable. Of course, if the company is unlikely to become notable enough for an article, you can convert it into plain text. Just make sure you use edit summaries. Xiner (talk, email) 19:36, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

March 3

I recently became a member of www.wetcanvas.com, but because of an article about the artist website which I read here at Wikipedia about two weeks ago, I was leery of allowing them to have use of my artwork. According to Wikipedia, this has become an area of contention with several artists who do not wish to give use of their artwork to WetCanvas without compensation. As I was armed with the article here at Wikipedia, upon registration at wetcanvas, I opted not to allow them use of my artwork. If it had not been for that article, I would not have known about wetcanvas (and deviantart) taking artist's works and printing them and selling them, with no profit going to the artist. I told my sister about the article, but now I cannot find it. Was the article removed from Wikipedia? I found a link to the article on another website, but was redirected to different website entirely which gave little to no information about wetcanvas. The one thing I really respect about Wikipedia is the unbiased information that it gives about websites, which in turn helps to protect the rights of users from unscrupulous opportunists.

Thank you for your help.

C. Massey-Barber

Looks like it might have been deleted, no way to know for sure, since only admins can read deleted revisions, only they would know where that page redirected to --VectorPotentialTalk 00:42, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The page redirected to WetCanvas forum, which was speedy deleted for not asserting the notability of the forum. The article claimed the forum was the largest internet forum of visual art material on the internet, which sounds like an assertion of notability to me. I've restored the article and the redirect. -- Rick Block (talk) 17:33, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect Mirror, The

Hi, I recently created a page with the title above, but now wonder if I should have used the exact book title ("The Perfect Mirror"). Do we put "The" and "A" at the start of a page title or not? Thanks. Johnfos 01:10, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you do put "The" and "A" at the beginning of page titles, if they would be capitalised normally. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (definite and indefinite articles at beginning of name) for more information. -- Chairman S. Talk Contribs 01:26, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gender template

Hi. I was just wondering whether we have a template that goes along the lines of "This article does not represent the views of both the male and female gender. Please improve this article..." I think that this would be a good idea, since some articles (such as those related to fashion or cosmetics) are directed towards a specific gender.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 03:08, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd just use and put the reasoning on the talk page. Sorry for erasing your edit by mistake earlier. Xiner (talk, email) 03:53, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. IMHO, we do need such a template. Shall I start making this template (WP:BOLD), or do I need to ask on a certain venue for a consensus? Or it this page the place to get consensus?--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 04:01, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You can make it. If I may, though, I'd at least change the wording. "The views of both genders" is itself susceptible to POV, e.g., what society? class? I'd prefer "do not sufficiently discuss both genders" or something like that. Xiner (talk, email) 04:19, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. I felt that I need further consensus, so I posted a message here. You can see the template that I made on User:Ed/Sandbox2 (future reference: [1]).--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 04:51, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We are serious believers in our religion and find is seriously offensive that you cannot refrain from deleting it. We have been trying ALL day to post it, but you keep deleting it. We find it offensive that you call it "Vandalism" and would BE VERY appreciative if you WOULD refrain from deleting it or calling it Vandalism. Thank you.

I really don't know what this particular religion is about, but if you would like to protest the deletions, you may go to Wikipedia's deletion review process. Bear in mind, however, that your article must follow Wikipedia's policies on content.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 04:10, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I first noticed these articles when clearing out the WP:CSD backlog. The original article failed to assert notability nor provide and verifiable references, so it seemed an easy decision to delete. I have suggested to User talk:Taylor317 how to work on the article, if in fact it can pass verifiability tests. Andrwsc 04:37, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Sir,

I am serching for the fish that eats mud. In an artificial pond made 6 feet deep,20feet wide & 20 feet length. During rainy season, mud goes in the artificial pond. That mud should be cleaned/ eat by the fish.

1) which is the fish? 2) whether the fish is a fresh water fish?

I cant seem to figure out how to report blatant advertisers. I am layed up for a few months after an on the job accident and will be able to look for Wiki offenders. Can you put in laymans terms how to request a page delete? Janquille, New Jersey

You can try db-spam if it's blatant. What's the article? John Reaves (talk) 04:44, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)Well...first of all, you will need to thoroughly read Wikipedia's deletion policy, along with a general understanding of all other policies. There are three different methods for deletion:

• Speedy deletion - for articles that can be deleted on the spot; deleted within a few hours
• Proposed deletion - for uncontroversial articles that can be deleted but not immediately; takes 5 days...I think
• Articles for deletion - for controversial articles that can be deleted but not immediately; requires the consensus of the community and debate generally lasts for 5 days

The page is of a band that has basically made a myspace page out of wik. Still Pending is the name of this particular band and there is more too. My question is do I have to put the db-spam? and a afterward too? Also, do I just go to the edit tab and put it right at the top? Thanks Wikieditor07

The tl just allows it to show up, here, as it would look in the editing box. It's just db-spam (if you look at this from the edit box, ignore the nowikis; they prevent the software from parsing wiki code). See Wikipedia:Spam for more on spam, Help:Templates for more on templates, and on and on. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 04:58, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Name of business

I want to know if it'S possible to add the name of my business. we are in business fort 12 years, and it's will be nice to add the name of the business in your record —Preceding unsigned comment added by EG0X (talkcontribs) 01:57, 3 March 2007

Wikipedia has many articles about notable corporations (e.g., Microsoft, Intel, Exxon Mobil, WalMart, Google, etc.). If you can write an article of similar quality about your business, go ahead. However, before you make your first article, see WP:COI. The prevailing view is that few people have the necessary detachment and objectivity to write neutrally about their own businesses or organizations. However, I would wager handsomely that most of the major corporation articles on Wikipedia have significant contributions from employees or stockholders of said corporations. (Obviously, any business that is even halfway competent will understand the exposure benefits of having an article on Wikipedia, and will send its people to help the process along. Wikipedia doesn't even require users to log in before editing most articles; if Wikipedia can't even stop the vandals, it certainly isn't going to stop the Microsofties, Googleheads, etc. from making constructive edits.) Be aware that if you have never written for Wikipedia before, the odds are high that your first attempt will merely feed the deletionists, because writing articles of encyclopedic quality is a skill that most Wikipedia newcomers don't arrive already knowing. (For example, you did not sign your message. That suggests you haven't yet learned enough wikicraft to avoid the common article deletion pitfalls. The ease of editing on a wiki is deceptive; Wikipedia is actually a vast minefield of complexity waiting to trip up newcomers.) Your best bet is to spend several months making constructive edits to a variety of already-existing articles, while reading the vast collection of Wikipedia help pages, guidelines, and policies. Once you have a solid idea of how things work around here, you'll be in a much better position to create new articles that actually stick. --Teratornis 15:27, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi EGOX, I'm glad you posted the question here. I'd like to echo Teratornis' view that it's probably not a good idea to write the article yourself, at least not right away, as this would bring up problems with our notability and conflict of interest guidelines. If you want to, you could write the article on your userpage or a subpage of it such as User:EG0X/company. You're more free to do what you want with your own userpages (see WP:UP for the guideline). If you choose this route, I can take a look at the page when you're ready and let you know whether I think it would work as a Wikipedia article in terms of notability and neutrality. If it's well-sourced and complies with the neutrality policy, we can move it to the main article space (i.e. out of your user subpage). Leave me a message on my talk page if you have any questions or want to discuss anything. delldot talk 16:25, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How to research possibly (old) deleted articles

I have a bad feeling about a section of an article, Systems design, that it is cut-n-pasted text from an article that was AfD'd. My suspicions here, the insertion by an IP user here. What do you do when you just can't remember if this was its own controversy or like so many others? Article reference in Google

The article I created in English does not appear in the Google search results. The article on the same topic in other wikipedia languages does appear, and the link from other English Wikipedia articles leading to mine do appear as well.

How do I get my article to appear as a search result in a simple Google search? —Preceding unsigned comment added by VerdanaTech (talkcontribs) 08:37, 3 March 2007

If you mean École du Louvre, you created it only 2 days ago. Perhaps Google hasn't indexed it yet? Which article did you mean? Shenme 09:07, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my, yes, you've created the page, added redirects for non-accented characters, and fixed links on many pages in just the last 48 or so hours. I think Google will take a bit longer than that to recognize that the new page exists. In fact, it will be interesting to see how long, given that your page is referenced from so many places. Can you keep checking and make a note here? I'm curious. Shenme 09:21, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your prompt answer. I will keep checking indeed.
If you want to give Google search a push, you can submit your page for indexing. I have no idea whether that will actually cause Google to index your page sooner than if you do nothing. --Teratornis 14:57, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quality/audience/volume vs WP:ATT

Hello,
I have noted a lot of users often being "a bit too bold". Those users doesn't seem to care for WP:ATT. They read something they think is wrong (possibly not even checking the references) and go scratch all over.
I have recently seen two interesting cases: in the first, an user didn't have any doubt in turning a referenced article in an unreferenced one (it currently looks more like a stub). He claimed the new article was more useful and readable. Unluckly, it could have been proofed (by using the removed references) to be false. Oddly enough, some users commented as "I like..." the whole thing.
The second case is references are being used without exactly pointing out where this info is taken. Specifically, the indicated reference is over 5000 pages. Obviously, no one will ever have the will to check it out. I am however very skilled in using them and already proofed the thing to be false. So, the problem is "false referencing".
I am going after this by providing more references (I hope they won't bash WP:ATT so bad) but I'm unsure this is enough.
So, for the questions:

1. What is the raccomanded way to deal with high users volume with this behaviour?
2. What is the estabilished way to deal with different audiences?
3. What if a popular source contradicts a less popular but more authorative source?
4. How to remember users WP does have a specific set of guidelines? I don't want to tell them "be less bold" but that's the idea.

MaxDZ8 talk 09:05, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

• Removing properly cited material from an article makes it less useful. Anyone who says otherwise clearly doesn't know the rules. What article are we talking about. What to do when popular belief and authoritive sources differ are different depending on what it is, but the authoritive source info should always be mentioned. Point the user to WP:ATT. If they don't want to follow what is a non-negotiable policy, perhaps they should be less bold. What is the article we're talking about? - Mgm|(talk) 11:55, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article I am speaking about it's very technical (shader). The specific "removed reference page" was this (there's a quick overlook on this edit run on talk:shader). The "false referencing" issue is visible in the last version of shader as well - you can see the references are currently "unreferenced" by the text: in fact, they shall be deleted. This opens the "reference checking" problem...
Being a term used for marketing there's a lot of hype around this stuff and I understand the "feel" by some users but again, this is stretching it.
MaxDZ8 talk 07:46, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Something I forgot to write: the problem isn't on the edit itself (which has been reverted) but on the fact similar problems arise at least once per month (in fact, the article is now a mess, compare it to the versions 1 year ago!)
MaxDZ8 talk 07:55, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You could consider contributing to another language Wikipedia (see main page). Starting from scratch

I would like to start a new article and have reviewed *Help: Starting a new page* but am unable to deduce from that how to proceed. The title would be a person's name and then there are about 1400 words of text, created using Word 97, that I would like to paste in for the body of the article. Are there any basic simple instructions that will tell me how to do this? My hope would be to get this going first in the simplest way possible and then save any advanced things, such as creating links, until later. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bond220 (talkcontribs) 21:14, 3 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

It's good that you've gone through Help:Starting a new page. What particular questions do you have about things not making sense? In the meanwhile, you can also take a look at Wikipedia:Tutorial, which gives a good overview about how editing works on Wikipedia. -- Natalya 21:22, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you have not edited much yet, so it was definitely wise for you to ask here first. Since you are probably new to Wikipedia, I suggest you start by typing or pasting your article content on your user page or a user sub-page, and ask here for some help with editing it there if you need help. Otherwise, if you create your article in the main article space, without any review first by experienced editors, your first attempt might end up as lunch for the deletionists. Most people find it unpleasant to put a lot of work into editing a first article, only to have it deleted. If you start your page first as a user page, and get some feedback from experienced Wikipedians, we can help you get the article in good enough shape so when you create it as a "real" article, it will be more likely to "stick." Wikipedia seems very easy to edit, but Wikipedia ruthlessly deletes a tremendous number of new articles, and disproportionately many by people who are new and haven't learned the incredibly elaborate rules. The most conservative approach is to spend a few months learning to edit by improving some existing articles (which are in little danger of being deleted), and only begin creating new articles when you have gained some experience. --Teratornis 03:53, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, that's not to say that you can't create the articles on your computer at the same time, and upload them when they are ready. I've done this myself, but it's only really useful for articles that don't exist yet or that are unlikely to be edited for a while. --Seans Potato Business 19:46, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to look into WP:ADOPT. Do you have a specific problem? You may want to read WP:NPOV, WP:N, and WP:V. Xiner (talk, email) 21:37, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To be specific, MadeinFinland: many of your removals of content in Roma people were of unsourced statements. However, if you remove content, it could mean anything. You could be against the fact that a statement is true, you could be removing biased content, you could be removing incorrect content, or you could be vandalizing. When you edit, it would be great if you provided an edit summary in the box labeled "Edit summary (Briefly describe the changes you have made)". That way, people will know why you are removing something. It's quite possible that people think that you're trying to push your own point of view, or that you are vandalizing. The only way for them to know is to provide an edit summary, and better yet, discuss it on the talk page first. GracenotesT § 21:41, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

• First, disable your spam blocker. Sometimes, they do weird things and re-enable themselves after a certain period of time. Re-disable it, to be sure.
• Second, request a confirmation email again. If you've requested confirmation before, that will invalidate all previous confirmation requests. There may be one request outstanding, which could be causing this problem; it's better to start anew to eliminate that possibility.
• Then, look for the confirmation email immediately. They don't take days to arrive, as they're sent right away, as soon as you press the button and the server processes the page.
• Click the link on the request. If it doesn't work, cut-and-paste the link to your browser.

As I can see the user is repeatedly removing these tags, firstly if you know that definitely meets the criteria for a biography speedy deletion than add, the tag - if he/she removed it start giving thr user warnings in the form of:

However to comply with policies they have to be given in that order and if they remvoed it after the uw-speedy4 the report them to AIV and an administrator will either warn them or temporarily block them, I will inform the user that its against policy to removed DB tags.Tellyaddict 14:32, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orange Ribbon

Dear Wikipedia, In regards to your listing of the orange ribbon, we kindly ask that you update this listing to include the orange ribbon representing at-risk animals in the United States (registered) and England (registration pending).

Our non-profit organization, Rational Animal www.rational-animal.org, is dedicated to increasing awareness about at-risk animals in New York City, and we officially registered the orange ribbon with the US Patent and Trademark office as the ribbon color that represents at-risk animals, "at-risk animal" defined as any non-human animal whose life or well-being is in jeopardy.

Rational Animal campaigns with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals www.animalalliancenyc.org, a coalition of 100 rescue organizations dedicated to ending euthanasia of homeless animals in NYC simply because they have no homes. The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is a non-profit organization that has successfully brought the animal rescue community together and is viewed as a model for cities working to become "no-kill." Part of the campaign for the Mayor's Alliance includes wearing the orange ribbon in support of animals.

With 5-6 million dogs, cats and other animals euthanized annually in shelters throughout the United States, we want to increase awareness about the need to be good animal guardians: those people who adopt from shelters, spay and neuter the animals to control the overpopulation situation, and keep their animals for their lifetime.

he orange ribbon was selected as the ribbon representing animals as it matches the orange "Adopt Me" vest worn by animals needing homes and is an emergency color worn by animals to protect them from hunters and traffic. We also work with the ASPCA who has recently changed their colors to reflect the color orange www.aspca.org. We also officially named the ribbon, the Orange Animal Guardian Ribbon, in partnership with In Defense of Animals' guardian campaign, www.idausa.org.

With so many ribbons representing human causes, we wanted the orange ribbon to symbolize support for all causes that work to improve animals' lives. We encourage any individual or legitimate organization that works to improve lives of animals to use the orange ribbon. We currently have information about the orange ribbon posted at www.animalguardianribbon.org, and one of our volunteers, Nathan Janes, Poparf.com has created a beautiful work of art featuring a dog wearing a ribbon and adopt me vest which we've reproduced on matchboxes in which we distribute the orange ribbon for free or at low cost in bulk quantities for rescue groups wanting to raise funds using it.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

There's a 'Main page' link in the sidebar to the left of the screen. If that isn't what you were trying to ask, could you restate the question? --ais523 12:49, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Or if you're trying to go to your own homepage which is set in your browser, there should be an icon at the top of the browser window that looks like a little house. By clicking that it should take you to your homepage. Or, if you're trying to set a new homepage for your browser, we'll need to know which browser you're using (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). Hi

Somehow this has happened since October:When I'm exploring Wikipedia unlogged-in with Trampton, but with User:Teddey account.I'm adding something on a talk page adn I look and it gives not saying "User:Teddey",but "User:71.96.198.147"!Later it gives me this one:71.96.197.21!A couple of days later it then gives me this one:71.96.196.202,why is this happening, and if it is possible please delete the page, here are the pages(there are more!) :o .....

• Contribution pages cannot be deleted. Those numbers are IP addresses which usually show when you don't log in or when your login doesn't "stick". It seems to be resitrcted to the Teddey account, so I would recommend using the account you know to work. Did you use different computers or browsers when you signed in with the other account. Your Internet Service Provider appears to be Verizon, which if my memory serves me correctly uses dynamic IP addresses which explains the changing numbers. - Mgm|(talk) 13:32, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate Content

Following a link from the front page today about Bradley Willman, I noticed that the Willlman page is largely composed of a synopsis of a single legal case (US vs Kline), and that the content of that synopsis is repeated word for word in a linked article on the defendant in that case Ronald Kline.

How do you go about suggesting that one article is merged or redirects into the other? StuartDouglas 13:56, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Account confirmation

I *have* created an account, Webmiser or webmiser, I'm not sure which, or if it matters. Allowed a preference I would choose the all lower case version. I got the confirmation email in my webmiser@kascomp.com account and I clicked on the link. The login returns with 'incorrect password' every time. I have asked for a new password, but it says it's already sent one, and only one per 24-hour period is allowed. Renaming articles

When proposing to move an article, besides the move tag on the talk page, should there be a tag on the article page? If so, what? --Ephilei 15:46, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, the move tag on the talk page is the only thing required by the requested moves process; the article itself doesn't need tagging. --ais523 16:01, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

The problem is that the array (which defines each button) should have 5 items in it: the image, the description, the opening tag (can be more than just a tag), the closing tag and the text to go between the tags (this is replaced by whatever the user has selected if they have something selected). Your B button definition looks to have 7 items so the code will ignore the last two. You might find it easier to stick with the standard Extra edit buttons code and setup a custom button rather than using a copy of the code. Can I edit in MS Word?

This is my first attempt to edit a Wikipedia article (Victory at Sea). I had hoped to edit it in MS Word where I can more easily show suggested deletions and additions. But when I selected "external editor" in preferences, then tried to open the PHP file in Word, got error message saying I don't have approval to open it.

Confusing. Is editing in Word possible, and, if so, how would I resubmit the edit to Wikipedia?

--writerboba 16:55, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, you can't edit Wikipedia articles in Word, as it doesn't understand wikimarkup. The whole 'external editor' thing is experimental; I'm not sure if they ever got it to work (see m:Help:External editor for information on how far they got). --ais523 16:59, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
I use external editors often as the find/replace function on them is better than browsers. You can hit "edit this page", copy the text in the edit box, paste it into the editor of your choice, edit, copy the new material, then paste it back into the article. You won't be able to see if the links work and such but then you can hit "Show preview" before you save your changes so that you can check them at that point. Though, the time between copying and pasting back in the text is generally not long at all. I wouldn't do the same if I were working on something over the course of a few days or anything like that. Esoteric language in Japanese culture pages

I'd like to know what the policy is in using Japanese words on Japanese culture (anime, manga, music, etc) in place of English words is. I see little point in filling a page with "seiyu" when the author could just as easily call them "voice actors." I would imagine it would be a lot easier to understand if authors didn't do such a thing. In my opinion it just leads to unnecessary confusion which seems to disagree with some of Wikipedia's basic standards. Please clarify.

I would also like to add that the "seiyu" bit was only an example. There are many, many more English words that have been replaced with Japanese counterparts.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.177.2.254 (talkcontribs)

• Hi, 72. In general, the Wikipedia style guides prefer the use of English words or foreign origin loan words that have gained common usage in English -- see the Guide to Writing Better Articles, the Manual of Style, and the Manual of Style for Japan-Related Articles. None of these sources are absolute, but they generally recommend use of English unless the foreign word affirmatively adds to the article. Given that the style guidelines are not absolute, you may want to start a discussion on the talk pages of the article in question, or on the anime or Japan project talk pages. The editors there may have discussed this issue, or may be able to provide you with more information. Thanks, TheronJ 22:29, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nation-Simulation Game

I am sad to see this article has been removed without any new article being replaced by it, and insted having this link being redirected to some computer games..

This genre of game do deserve to be represented on the site and should not have been deleted.

I am however willing to write up a new article that will disclude alot of the biased information in the earlier article put in by a person from another game, I am taking that was the issue here...

So if you would consider reopening the article if I can supply you with an article that live up to the expectations then I would be happy to do so.

Regards, Maretti.

See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nation-simulation game for information on why it was deleted. Basically, the original article was original research. If you know of reliable sources for the subject, write an article about it in your userspace (User:Maretti/Nation-Simulation Game, for instance), and then go to deletion review to request for your new article to be placed where the deleted article was. Hope that helps! --ais523 17:20, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Adding information to an existing article and subject.

I just joined Wiki. I am a composer and producer working in the entertainment industry.. How do I add my information about what I did on the show, and how do I link that page to a new article I will be creating? Thanks, Kristian Rex

• Wikipedia only includes material which has already been published elsewhere so that it is verifiable, so unless what you want to add was already covered in a book, magazine, newspaper, website, etc. it's not recommended you add anything you personally know to be true. As for linking to a new page, I recommend you try WP:YFA and Wikipedia:Tutorial. If you have original content about a television show you would like to wikify, check the list of wikis for a wiki that wants such content. For example, searching WikiIndex for "television" turns up this possibility: The TV IV. That wiki looks pretty good, at least on its Main Page. I did not find the site's editorial policies in a couple of clicks, but the help page mentions that you can write reviews of TV shows, which means they evidently do not share Wikipedia's policy of no original research. And in the interest of hair-splitting, when you say "I just joined Wiki", oldschool purists might think you mean to say you just joined the original wiki, WikiWikiWeb. Since there are thousands of wikis, it's best to refer to each wiki by its proper name (this is Wikipedia, for example). --Teratornis 22:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image page change

All of a sudden, I'm seeing "No higher resolution available." on smaller images. Does anyone know where the discussion about this occurred? ShadowHalo 21:13, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

• Hi, Shadow: As far as I can tell, in your preferences, under the "Files" tab, you can set a limit on the size of images on image description pages. If an image is over that limit, it will display at your limit, with a link to a higher res version of the same image. If not, you will get the "no higher resolution available" message. See also Help:Preferences#Files. Hope that helps, TheronJ 22:13, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Has this always been the case? I know that it used to give a link if you wanted to see a larger resolution, but I don't remember ever seeing "No higher resolution available." below the image. ShadowHalo 01:07, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's due to changes in the MediaWiki software. For more info, read the B.R.I.O.N. section of the Wikipedia Signpost. Harryboyles 10:17, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wikipedia Editors,

I inadvertently placed the W13BY info on the WJAC page. It should be moved to W13BY.

Hopefully, the WJAC information can be placed back on it's respective page.

At one time, WJAC had broadcasted on W13BY.

What do you mean download. Wikipedia needs many servers to hold all it's information. If you want the unzipped version, your going to want to buy about a 100,000 dollars worth of computers. If you want to view it then I would expect it to be the same as any other website. --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 00:31, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:WAP, WP:DUMP, meta:Wiki on a stick. A Google search for "Wikipedia on Palm" yields a few results, including this intriguing one: Wikipedia in your Pocket. I think the Wiki on a stick means the software, not Wikipedia itself. --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 01:40, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, wiki on a stick refers to putting MediaWiki and an AMP stack on a portable medium such as a USB flash drive (or, for desktop use, on a computer's internal drive). I've been playing around with running MediaWiki under XAMPP this way. It runs great even on my old crummy Windows 98 computers. I have not tried importing the Wikipedia database, yet, but in principle it doesn't look hard to do, if one has enough disk space. Copying little corporate wikis between computers has been pretty simple, as such things go. With USB flash drive capacities going up according to Moore's Law, it should be feasible to carry around an actual stand-alone AMP stack running MediaWiki with a full recent dump of Wikipedia pretty soon, if not already, if someone were so inclined. --Teratornis 07:14, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adding errornous information on purpose

Dear Wikipedia authors and adminstrators,

I am here to report a user who keeps editing this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assyrian_voice

He has edited so many times, it is beyond accetable now. I am the webmaster of the website about which the article was written. The information is correct, and it is basic information. But because he has a website that has started competing with mine, he keeps on editing the article and adding wrong stuff to it.

His IP is: 74.96.33.67 and you can see his IP on my website too.

Either:

-Ban his IP -Ban him from editing the article -Lock the article

I understand that you guys are watching over the articles of the entire earth, and I don't want to put even more on your plate. But this individual is doing this to many other entries, and that is a shame. Wikipedia is too good to be concerned with such individuals.

Thank You —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Assyrianvoice (talkcontribs) 02:50, 6 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

I'll inform the editor that he needs to stop editing that page or risk a ban, but I don't think it would be wise to ban him without warning him first. GofG ||| Contribs 03:05, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

author requests deletion on behalf of subject

Some time ago, I posted an entry for another individual whom I felt merited a Wikipedia entry. The entry was tagged for deletion but after debate was kept alive. Since that time, other editors have substantially expanded the original entry. However, now the individual who is the subject of the entry has asked me to delete it for his/her own personal reasons. What can I do to ensure that the entry gets deleted? 71.210.212.187 03:10, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nominate it for deletion at WP:PROD. If it survives, it is here to stay, unfortunetly :(. GofG ||| Contribs 03:12, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If the article does not get deleted, you may want to see if the guidelines at WP:NPF and here can help.--Vbd (talk) 09:01, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
• You can do a lot, but unless you can provide a reason within deletion policy, it probably won't work. We don't delete articles by request unless the subject is borderline notable or the entry contains a lot of disparaging information and even then, in the last case the page would probably be edited to fix it. It's unlikely that someone would go to the trouble of putting a trojan on your computer just to be able to post to Wikipedia from your IP address (you'd have to make some sort of mistake, such as downloading a doubtful file first). It's much more likely that at some time in the past, the IP address was assigned by your ISP to another user. Or that if you provide unsecured wireless access to nearby users, that someone took advantage of that. So no, there is no evidence that you're a victim of stolen identity.
What you should do is register for an account - see Wikipedia:Why create an account?. That will generally let you edit even though your IP (in and of itself) is blocked. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hello,

i went to edit the first few lines of the entry but this part did not seem to be available to edit. why is that?

also, information about how to get a response here seems very unclear. i am on a public computer. when you say to go back to 'this page' for an answer, what is 'this page'? does this mean the help page? the page of the entry i am attempting to edit? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.176.213.219 (talk) 05:15, 6 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

• Instead of clicking the section edit links, you need to enter the "edit this page" link at the top to edit the introduction section, or click the edit link of another section and manually change the section number to "0" in the URL. When it says "come back to this page" we refer to the page the instructions are on: the help desk. The page you visited to post this question. - Mgm|(talk) 09:18, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stalker...!?

Ive used wikipedia since around May 2006 and i never had a problem, but it seems this certain Admin is stalking me. I looks at all my contributions and always reverts them, and always leaves me messages on my talk page and sometimes i feel lowered. just because im not an admin and i dont make corrections to his expectations. yeah i might be 19 but that does not make me stupid or foolish. i feel offended. i just wish he would leave me alone. he thinks everything i do is vandalism, but i have NEVER had this problem before. then the other night i was fixing a page that I created and i noticed it said sources but there was nothing there so i had removed it, and he said it was vandalism and he said one more bad edit and i would be blocked. i could not beleive it. Now he wants to put my article up for Deletion. there are thousands of schools part of wikipedia and i dont think it should be removed. i admit, its not that much notable, but if mine should be removed so should all of them that meet criteria. what should i do? thanks. a big wikipedia fan and contributor! Mcoop06 07:46, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

• I've tried looking through your edit history, but I can't find the edits you are talking about. Could you please provide a WP:DIFF to where the admin reverted your edits? To me it appears you are unaware of some guidelines regarding for example schools (see WP:SCHOOL) and references. If an article has an empty section sources, that means the article is missing a vital ingredient that needs to be addressed to avoid deletion. If I were you I'd talk to the admin in question and ask them to drop you some links to pages with relevant policies and guidelines. Remember, the fact we have thousands of articles on schools doesn't mean we should keep all of them. It's not only the subject, the content counts for something too. - Mgm|(talk) 09:16, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ok thank you, im trying to improve myself all the time to do better work here. I was just frustrated! probably because the article i had created was being taken from me, but im understanding a little more each and every day. thanks for your response! Mcoop06 09:58, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia deletes lots of articles, probably more than any other wiki. Wikipedia is a very specialized kind of wiki (WP:ENC), with an incredibly complex set of policies and guidelines (see: User:John Broughton/Editor's Index to Wikipedia) to trip up naive users. Wikipedia is also the most famous and visited wiki, so lots of people do their first wiki editing here. However, in some ways that's like starting out in the "big leagues." Many other wikis seem to have more relaxed rules for their content, they have fewer contributors, and a narrower topic focus. If you find a wiki that caters to school-related topics, you can probably write about your school there as much as you like. See List of wikis, search WikiIndex for school and education for a wiki that wants your content. --Teratornis 18:35, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you SD —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sleepydormouse (talkcontribs) 10:59, 6 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Google periodically revisits pages to see if they have changed. Your changes should show in Google then. Wikipedia has no control over when it happens. PrimeHunter 11:12, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
After looking around Google because of another editor's question, it seems that Google can be from one to two weeks 'behind'. That is, the 'cached' copy of the article that Google indexes and shows a brief copy of may not be refreshed until days after the your latest change.
For instance, type "site:en.wikipedia.org Hippolyte Delaroche" into the Google search line (well, best copy-n-paste it). When you hit search you'll see that Wikipedia article and a couple lines from the top of the article. But wait, see at the bottom of that entry, where it says "Cached - Similar pages"? Click on 'Cached', then look at what Google shows you. At the top of that 'cached' copy of the page it says "as retrieved on Feb 28, 2007 08:31:15 GMT." The copy of the page that Google is keeping is 6 days old!
Depending on the page, it might be a couple weeks before the change is 'noticed' by Google. Or merely a couple days. Paul Gauguin is 'important', so that cached copy is only two days old as I look right now. Shenme 11:18, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"this article has been tagged since..."

I am an educator, and trying to figure out how Wikipedia works. What does it mean, if an article has been "tagged"? I could find nothing about this in FAQs or by searching... Also, I am designing a research project to study the reliability of Wikipedia. How do I come in contact with someone who works at Wikipedia and can help us with this study?

The date goes with the tag. The tag is something which typically causes a box to appear, which indicates an editor feels the article needs improvement. Adding tags is an informal process; the date helps other editors judge urgency. If editing a page, you will usually see tags looking like this: . Notinasnaid 13:20, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, very few people actually work at Wikipedia. Why do you feel you need to contact one of them? Notinasnaid 13:21, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Cleanup tags are used to mark articles as being imperfect in certain specific ways, to attract the attention of editors and/or readers who could be able to fix the problem, and to warn readers that there may be a problem; see this list to see some of the cleanup tags available. For instance, the tag copyedit would put a message at the top of an article warning that it was in need of copyediting (e.g. it might have bad spelling, grammar, or style). As for contacting "someone who works at Wikipedia", hardly anyone works for the Wikimedia Foundation (it's mostly the work of unpaid volunteers like me), but you can see Wikipedia:Contact us for more information. --ais523 13:21, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Someone interested in joining the teeming ranks of Wikipedia researchers might read: Wikipedia:Wikipedia in academic studies. But before performing yet another me-too Wikipedia study, perhaps consider researching something that fewer people are looking at, but which is arguably more important: the adoption of wiki technology by smaller organizations or user communities with more narrowly-defined goals, who currently know little or nothing about wikis. Imagine if the whole world worked as well as Wikipedia. After spending some time on Wikipedia, it's even harder than it was before to tolerate the comparative chaos and imprecision that plagues information exchange and collaboration in every other organization I have any experience with. (For example, how annoying is it now to see typographical errors I cannot easily correct? Or vague allusions to things which I could clarify by adding links, if it were only generally possible?) Obviously, the challenge before humankind now is to wikify everything which can be wikified. I challenge researchers to research that. For starters, every university (and earlier school) should have at least one wiki now, and make sure every student graduates well-prepared to join the modern world of efficient collaboration. Then each university could research and report on what their students are doing with wikis, both in school and after graduation. --Teratornis 17:47, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nesting

Is it possbile to creat nested wiki's.

I am working on a page where some information is already posted, I do not just want to place a link to the page, and I do not want to just copy that info and place it in my wiki as if the origanal gets updated, the other wikis will not.

Is is possible to display one wiki inside another? 24.114.2.40 14:11, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your question is unclear. A "wiki" is a large set of pages; for example, there are wikis on bicycling and on the programming language python. Wikipedia is a wiki, as is Wiktionary and Wikisource. So you wouldn't display an entire wiki inside one another.
If you're asking if it possible to link two pages within a single wiki so that if one page is updated, the other is as well, the answer is "yes", via transclusion. You'll find that described at Wikipedia:Transclusion and Wikipedia:Transclusion costs and benefits. This is rarely done with Wikipedia articles; it is the norm with RfAs and AfDs.
If you're asking about linking pages of two different wikis, I'd guess that would depend on whether interwiki linking has been enabled for the wikis in question. I very strongly advise against bringing outside content into Wikipedia via this method, because this causes accountability problems: it's impossible to see what the content of a page looked like in the past without looking at both articles, and if the source article is outside of Wikipedia, then the accuracy of the history of that source article depends people who haven't been named trusted editors (via RfA) here. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 15:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
See mw:Manual:$wgEnableScaryTranscluding. I would guess this is only possible for a pair of user-controlled MediaWiki wikis. Disclaimer: I have not tried this "scary transcluding" feature. It would probably make using a wiki offline (as in a "wiki on a stick") more difficult, for example. --Teratornis 16:07, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bircham International University

Dear Wikipedia,

We have recently found your definition about Bircham International University. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bircham_International_University The definition currently posted is inaccurate, incomplete and misleading. I suggest that this definition is updated with a most accurate and precise content. First I will propose the definition and then I will provide the references and proofs in order to support the inaccurate leads detected. I thank you in advance for your time and I hope that you reconsider that this incorrect definition is quite damaging for our institution and it does not honor the commitment to accuracy and truth from an Encyclopedia

CORRECT DEFINITION ABOUT BIU:

Bircham International University is an independent institution of higher education that offers degree programs through distance learning for the adult professional student. BIU is a non accredited institution according to the USA accreditation standards (CHEA) and a provider of non formal higher education according to the Spanish Law. Its unaccredited degrees may not be acceptable to employers or other institutions, and the use of its degree titles may be restricted or illegal in some jurisdictions, such as the States of Oregon, Maine or Texas.

INACCURATE DATA ARGUMENTS AND PROOFS

I also ask that any reference to Diploma Mill or Fraudulent school are taken away from the definition for the reasons, arguments and proofs provided below.

AACRAO AND SOME STATES CLASSIFICATION OF BIU

The Oregon State Office of Degree Authorization listed BIU as a degree mill in the past. BIU provided documentation and a review conducted by Alan Contreras from the Oregon State Office of Degree Authorization any negative definition of BIU was deleted. It is though listed correctly as not accredited school with no further comments, except an “F” which means Foreign institution. http://www.osac.state.or.us/oda/unaccredited.html

AACRAO http://www.aacrao.org/international/consulting.cfm conducted a simple review of BIU legal status that lead to the incorrect statement posted by the State of Maine and Texas. The Oregon State Office of Degree Authorization who required this evaluation from AACRAO did not post the statement “Bircham is not accredited and it not authorized by the Spanish government” because it was explained to them by BIU. After detecting the the Wikipedia definition, BIU has taken the actions to get the Maine and Texas sites corrected the same way the Oregon Office did. We do not know how long this will take. First we have presented the same documents and proofs provided in this email to AACRAO who is the institution used by different States organism to verify foreign institutions. I understand that posing an inaccurate question or addressing the incorrect department in Spain may have lead AACRAO to this conclusion. Allow me to clarify that there are two types of higher education in Spain:

1. Formal Education leading to officially recognized degrees is monitored by the corresponding departments of education that ensure that the programs curriculum meet the standards set forth by the Ministry of Education. Completion of such homologated programs leads to an official degree.

2. Non-Formal Education (Educación no reglada) leading to non officially recognized degrees is monitored by the corresponding departments of consumer affairs that ensure consumer protection and quality of instruction delivery. Non formal education programs do not follow the Ministry of Education programs curriculum standards. Non formal education provides much more freedom in the program curriculum. Degrees granted after completion of non formal programs leads to a non official degree.

Bircham International University is a provider of non formal education and as such no further authorization form the Ministry of Education is required. The Ministry and Departments of Consumer Affairs monitors that BIU programs clearly state the non formal nature of the programs offered and the quality of instruction delivered. In 2004 a law was specifically approved on this regard. Before this law there was a disperse collection of norms and directives that could have lead the person conducting the AACRAO evaluation to the inaccurate and false conclusions stated above.

The applicable law is Decreto 84/2004 de 13 de Mayo. Enseñanza General. Quoting the law. It applies to private institutions that offer non formal education leading to non official degrees (...“los centros privados que imparten enseñanzas no dirigidas a las obtención de un título con validez oficial”...) You may read this law directly from http://gestiona.madrid.org/wleg/servlet/Servidor?opcion=VerHtml&idnorma=3480&word=S&wordperfect=N&pdf=S You may also verify other related laws at: http://gestiona.madrid.org/wleg/index.htm

Then you should download the PDF Documents called BIU Legal Docs and BIU Recognition on the top part of this link http://www.bircham.edu/pdfdownload/ This should provide documentary proof that neither AACRAO nor the States of Maine or Texas ever looked at while the Oregon State did look at. http://www.osac.state.or.us/oda/unaccredited.html

The PDF called BIU Legal Docs provides copies of the following documents and much more:

- Copy of the Official Registrar of Companies authorizing the name Bircham International University College and the purpose of the company (objeto social): Higher education. - Copy of the Economic Activity License under paragraph 932.2 (Professional Education and Improvement) - Copy of the Office license for the activity Higher Professional Education - Copy of a certificate from the Spain National Distance Learning Association (ANCED) stating the european residents may legally work in Europe with a non official degree granted by BIU. - Copy of the Consumer Affairs Quality Seal granted by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs that guarantees that BIU meets the regulations set forth by the law Decreto 84/2004 de 13 de Mayo. Enseñanza General. mentioned above.

BEING NOT ACCREDITED IS NOT EQAL TO BEING A DIPLOMA MILL

BIU may be listed as a non accredited school but this is not equivalent to be defined as a fraudulent institution or diploma mill. Quoting Wikipedia definition of unaccredited institutions “According to the United States Department of Education, it is possible for postsecondary educational institutions and programs to elect not to seek accreditation but nevertheless provide a quality postsecondary education” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_accreditation

You are also welcome to visit BIU website at http://www.bircham.edu/ to gather for more information and find out if BIU meets the criteria to be classified as a diploma Mill. BIU is NOT a Diploma Mill. A diploma mill is an institution of higher education that grants degrees without ensuring that students are properly qualified. The following aspects will allow you to properly differentiate BIU from a Diploma Mill or any questionable school. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degree_mill

1. Legality: A diploma mill does not provide clear references about its legal status or authority to grant degrees. BIU does. Sometimes the school is based in countries that lack of any regulations in matter of education such as several Caribbean countries, some nations from Africa, or some States from the USA (Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Montana). A diploma mill often operates from another country through PO BOX addresses. Visit the About BIU section of BIU web for further explanations of BIU legal references. You may also download copies of BIU Legal Docs from the PDF Download area. http://www.bircham.edu/english/aboutbiu/

2. Contact offices: A diploma mill does not usually provide a physical or verifiable contact address or telephone. Any international structure is not real or just a group of commercial agents. There are no offices to visit or to call during office hours. BIU provides real addresses with real offices that may be visiet on working hours. Visit the BIU Offices to know worldwide contact details. http://www.bircham.edu/english/contactabiu.html

3. Admission & Fees. A diploma mill does not have a real admission process. Anybody is usually admitted into any degree program offered. Fees are negotiable and there is usually no criteria or regulations regarding any transfer of credits from previous education and professional experience. A diploma mill never offers a refund policy nor enforces any students rights or consumer protection. Visit the Admission section of BIU web to learn about our admission requirements, student rights and refund policy. http://www.bircham.edu/english/adm.html

4. Academic support. A diploma mill does not have a list of academics and staff. If there is a list, there will be no description of their educational qualifications. No detailed information about the content of the academic program is provided accurately or in detail. No learning methodology and teacher tutoring or counseling is available. There is never any academic feedback about any work submitted to the institution. Visit the Who We Are section of BIU web to know BIU Staff and academics. http://www.bircham.edu/english/graduados/ You may also download the Study Guide from the PDF Download area. http://www.bircham.edu/pdfdownload/

5. Recognition. A diploma mill does not provide clear information about recognition and accreditation. Any reference to third party accreditors is misleading, not sound and not verifiable. There is never a consumer protection guarantee such as the one that BIU provides. Visit the About BIU section of this web for further explanations of BIU recognition. http://www.bircham.edu/english/aboutbiu/ You may also download copies of BIU Recognition from the PDF Download area. http://www.bircham.edu/pdfdownload/

BIU is NOT a Diploma Mill. BIU web provides clear arguments against these issues. If you wish to verify further about any issue do not hesitate to ask or request additional documents.

CITYLINK ARTICLE “Bircham International University was referred to by a former DipScam federal agent as a degree mill.[2]” http://www.citylinkmagazine.com/archives/101503coverstory.html

This article deals with several diploma mills and the whole business around it. It mentions BIU once through the opinion of one former BIU student (Hullender). Michelle Moultrie Hullender was granted admission into BIU on 4/11/2003. She was assigned to do several reports on several textbooks that she never submitted. On 10/27/2003 she request to withdraw from the program. BIU sent the corresponding Refund Form according to the student rights and refund policy. Michelle Moultrie Hullender never submitted any academic work so she ca not provide an accurate opinion about BIU programs of study. The Citylink article then provides a comment about Deric Bircham without even bothering to verify if Deric Bircham credentials are good or not. Deric Bircham full and detailed Biodata is available upon request. A short summary of the academic part of his background (The honors are not included here) may be read at http://www.bircham.edu/english/graduados/ Academic Board

BIU lawyers have contacted Citylink magazine in the past in order to demand a correction of this references. The answer from Citylink magazine and Jim Di Paola the wirter is that the article only express an opinion. If Wikipedia considers that an article of opinion is a fact, then we also request that the following references about BIU are added to the definition of BIU provided by Wikipedia. This definitions are factual references and not mere opinions:

QUACKWATCH Lists BIU as questionable non-accredited school Wikipedia provides a very accurate definition of Quackwatch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quackwatch BIU presented a report with all the course contents of our Natural Health Sciences programs for their review and evaluation. It is true that there is a lot of quackery in the Health Sciences Business but it is also true that there are good professionals and schools. I just refer the related links provided above. Quoting the answer received from Stephen Barrett, M.D. should be enough to prove the partial and obsesive personal war of this person has against all Natural Health Sciences. The question then is why Wikipedia considers such references as valid references for the definition of an academic institution.

Stephen Barrett, M.D. Email received on 02/12/03:

“I have been to your Web site, which, by the way, is one of the most poorly functional sites I have ever seen. The fact that you have a PhD program that offers to convey expert knowledge of iridology, homeopathy, and several other pseudosciences is enough for me to conclude that you teach nonsense. Sorry, but that's how I feel.”

Stephen Barrett, M.D. Board Chairman, Quackwatch, Inc. NCAHF Vice President and Director of Internet Operations P.O. Box 1747, Allentown, PA 18105 Telephone: (610) 437-1795

Finally I want to thank you again for taking your time to get to the end of our request and kindly ask you to modify the definition of BIU as suggested. Do not hesitate to contact me at willy@bircham.edu if any additional information or dicuments are required. I have provided quick internet references to support BIU arguments but of course additional documents are available. I did not want though to overload this email with an excess of documents.

I added references to the Helen K Garber page and would like to remove the no references message that is on top and asks to be removed when references are added. and can't see how to do it.

also, would like to add images to the titles of selected works and would like instruction on how to do it. thank you Helen K. Garber —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Helenkgarber (talkcontribs) 19:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Can anyone think of a reason why this article attracts so many vandals? It seems like an odd amount of vandalism for an article that isn't on the front page--VectorPotentialTalk 19:26, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

High school kids. Same with Polar Bear and Charles Dickens <- hugely entertaining for some it seems. Xiner (talk, email) 19:38, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wait, Colbert talked about the polar bear article on his show. I think he joked about glaciers in that White House video, but I have no idea if he keeps mentioning the topic on his show. Xiner (talk, email) 19:40, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There won't be any particular reason for this, it's probably just because a vandal may think of this to vandalise, I think it may just be because its a regularly edited article.Tellyaddict 19:38, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whether to remove external links

I am about to start cleaning up the Fiber to the premises#United States section. The section has external links to commercial websites. Based on the conventions for external links to avoid (particularly number 13), it looks to me like I should remove these links and replace them with plain text. I am hoping that someone more familiar with Wikipedia can confirm or deny whether this is in fact a responsible approach. (And if not, how should I proceed instead?) Thanks! Riick 19:29, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A less controversial approach, depending on the sentence in question, would be to replace the external links with Wiki links (I see that AT&T and SBC are linked to their Wiki pages, for example). Don't worry if it becomes a red link; that's acceptable. Of course, if the company is unlikely to become notable enough for an article, you can convert it into plain text. Just make sure you use edit summaries. Xiner (talk, email) 19:36, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
