Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

  • The Content translation system is no longer using Youdao's machine translation service. The service was in place for several years, but due to no usage, and availability of alternatives, it was deprecated to reduce maintenance overheads.   • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 August. It will be on all wikis from 17 August (calendar).

If it's a common act of vandalism on the page, I would go ahead and warn the user vandalizing the page with uw-vandalism1. However, I honestly might've gone ahead and warned the user for adding unsourced content since, well, how did a "decisive Oklahoma victory" occur? I'm not sure how it's a joke either. Plus, only two of the same disruptive edits on the page isn't convincing me to determine that it is a common act of vandalism on that page. Should I change the warning to unsourced content? I just thought it was a joke as the article never mentions that anyone won, also in the past people added "decisive Oklahoma victory, texas lost 1 bridge and dignity." You put the michigan tornado that gotten the pds tagged as a possible tornado, in fact it wasn't a possible tornado and a graph by sam emmerson put the tornado as possible ef4 intensity but i highly doubt doing ef4 damage but it lifted debris over 15k feet. @Doug Weller, I was wondering about that as well. Their continuous addition of block templates, combined with their unexplained removals (there’s more than just this, all of it is found on their contributions), likely shows that they have a CIR problem. Now, they already apologized when an ANI discussion was brought up for their removals but I don’t think the disruptive editing is going to stop. So they most likely have a CIR issue, and I’m not against another ANI discussion about their CIR concerns or even a block given their disruptive edits and their history. Recent changes

  • As part of the changes for the better diff handling of paragraph splits, improved detection of splits is being rolled out. Over the last two weeks, we deployed this support to group0 and group1 wikis. This week it will be deployed to group2 wikis. [14]
  • All Special:Contributions pages now show the user's local edit count and the account's creation date. [15]
  • Wikisource users can now use the prpbengalicurrency label to denote Bengali currency characters as page numbers inside the <pagelist> tag. [16]
  • Two preferences have been relocated. The preference "Enable the visual editor" is now shown on the "Editing" tab at all wikis. Previously it was shown on the "Beta features" tab at some wikis. The preference "Use the wikitext mode inside the visual editor, instead of a different wikitext editor" is now also shown on the "Editing" tab at all wikis, instead of the "Beta features" tab. Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 August. It will be on all wikis from 31 August (calendar).
  • New signups for a Wikimedia developer account will start being pushed towards idm.wikimedia.org, rather than going via Wikitech. Further information about the new system is available.
  • All right-to-left language wikis, plus Korean, Armenian, Ukrainian, Russian, and Bulgarian Wikipedias, will have a link in the sidebar that provides a short URL of that page, using the Wikimedia URL Shortener. This feature will come to more wikis in future weeks. [19]

Future changes

  • The removal of the DoubleWiki extension is being discussed. This extension currently allows Wikisource users to view articles from multiple language versions side by side when the <=> symbol next to a specific language edition is selected. Comments on this are welcomed at the phabricator task.
  • A proposal has been made to merge the second hidden-categories list (which appears below the wikitext editing form) with the main list of categories (which is further down the page). More information is available on Phabricator; feedback is welcome!

Hello Tails Wx, I stumbled across your user page and noticed that you had the userbox Template:User likes Tails Wx, which uses the image File:Tails Drawing.png. Unfortunately, the video game character Tails is non-free content, which is not allowed on the Wikimedia Commons, as well as on the English Wikipedia outside of strict rules. Even an unofficial drawing of the character isn't allowed because it is considered a "derivative work" of the non-free content. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. (talk page stalker) — @Helperaz2: I’m not sure the full context here, given Draft:Biren Zaverchand exists and isn’t deleted. That said, here is some helpful advice:
  1. It appears the draft is on Biren Zaverchand, which is a living person. So, the person in question has to pass the requirements of Wikipedia:Notability (people).
  2. To pass the notability requirements, an article needs to have secondary reliable sources, which contain information related to the person. These need to be more than a simple passing mention. You can learn about citing sources here: Wikipedia:Citing sources.
  3. A quick look at the draft shows that it is a single sentence and no secondary reliable sources are cited. If the article was originally in mainspace (i.e. Biren Zaverchand), and it was this quality, then speedy deletion would have been appropriate, given the article (current state of the draft) would not pass the notability requirements linked above.

Hi! I just started editing, and I’ve got a couple questions about sources for the Michael Bergmann article.

First, I was was looking for sources for the Style section and it turns out the entire thing is taken pretty much verbatim from Bergmann’s own website, which seems like a copyright violation. If so, what’s the best way to deal with it?

I was also looking for sources to confirm some of the film festival awards in the Works section, and the only sources I could find were Bergmann’s personal site and the IMDb page for the festival. (I tried to go to the festival’s website directly but for whatever reason it’s not loading for me.) I saw IMDb and self-published sites are both generally considered unreliable, so what should I do in the absence of other sources?

Hi there, BlueshiftMonsoon! Couple things.
First, if there is a copyright violation, you can request revision deletion by tagging the article under RD1 with Template:Copyvio-revdel and following the procedures there. However, I'm not seeing any close paraphrasing or copyright violation per Copyvio detector, so if it isn't close paraphrasing or copying-and-pasting or anything like that then it's not a copyright violation, so I wouldn't tag that page for revision deletion.
Second, if there's no reliable sources for the information/content then I would remove the unsourced paragraph due to original research and related concerns. BTW, do you have the festival website? I might try to find information and see if that source is reliable and has enough significant coverage of the subject to be used on that article (if it loads). Happy editing! I was looking specifically at the About page on Bergmann’s website – I did a few edits to the article before I started looking into the sources, but it’s still pretty much identical. When I put it directly into Copyvio Detector it says it can’t find any text on the page, so maybe there’s some weird formatting or something that stopped it from showing up in the general search?
Here’s the New York Independent Film and Video Festival website. It looks like it’s more commonly called the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. If you can't find any good information, I can delete the paragraph (and I'll probably be checking the rest of the article anyway, since it looks like there might be more information without reliable sources). Hi again, BlueshiftMonsoon! I've taken a closer look and yes, almost the entire section is a copyright violation. I've deleted the section and its text and listed the page at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2023 September 10. And the website you've linked did not load; so it's probably a dead link or something. And the whole article looks like it needs work, good work so far! Wish ya luck in improving it, and although that page is under investigation, this will not stop you from editing. Happy editing! Guild of Copy Editors September 2023 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September 2023 newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since June. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

David Thomsen: Prolific Wikipedian and Guild member David Thomsen (Dthomsen8) died in November 2022. He was a regular copy editor who took part in many of our Drives and Blitzes. An obituary was published in the mid-July issue of The Signpost. Tributes can be left on David's talk page.

Election news: In our mid-year Election of Coordinators, Dhtwiki was chosen as lead coordinator, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo continue as assistant coordinators, and Baffle gab1978 stepped down from the role. If you're interested in helping out at the GOCE, please consider nominating yourself for our next election in December; it's your WikiProject and it doesn't organize itself!

June Blitz: Of the 17 editors who signed up for our June Copy Editing Blitz, 12 copy-edited at least one article. 70,035 words comprising 26 articles were copy-edited. Barnstars awarded are here.

July Drive: 34 of the 51 editors who took part in our July Backlog Elimination Drive copy-edited at least one article. They edited 276 articles and 683,633 words between them. Barnstars awarded are here.

August Blitz: In our August Copy Editing Blitz, 13 of the 16 editors who signed up worked on at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 79,608 words comprising 57 articles. Barnstars awarded are available here.

September Drive: Sign up here for our month-long September Backlog Elimination Drive, which is now underway. Barnstars awarded will be posted here.

Progress report: As of 14:29, 9 September 2023 (UTC), GOCE copy editors have processed 245 requests since 1 January. The backlog of tagged articles stands at 2,066.

Recent changes

  • ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Wikipedia and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them. [28]
  • When you are logged in on one Wikimedia wiki and visit a different Wikimedia wiki, the system tries to log you in there automatically. This has been unreliable for a long time. You can now visit the login page to make the system try extra hard. If you feel that made logging in better or worse than it used to be, your feedback is appreciated. [29]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 September. It will be on all wikis from 14 September (calendar).
  • The Technical Decision-Making Forum Retrospective team invites anyone involved in the technical field of Wikimedia projects to signup to and join one of their listening sessions on 13 September. Another date will be scheduled later. The goal is to improve the technical decision-making processes.
  • As part of the changes for the Better diff handling of paragraph splits wishlist proposal, the inline switch widget in diff pages is being rolled out this week to all wikis. The inline switch will allow viewers to toggle between a unified inline or two-column diff wikitext format. [30]

Future changes

  • All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 20 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [31]
  • The Enterprise API is launching a new feature called "breaking news". Currently in BETA, this attempts to identify likely "newsworthy" topics as they are currently being written about in any Wikipedia. Your help is requested to improve the accuracy of its detection model, especially on smaller language editions, by recommending templates or identifiable editing patterns.
