Kalki 2898 AD (pronounced [kə.l.kɪ]) is a 2024 Indian Telugu-language epic science fiction film[6] directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by C. Aswani Dutt under Vyjayanthi Movies. The film features an ensemble cast which includes Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. It is the first instalment in the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe and inspired by Hindu mythology. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD, the film follows the few selected who are on a mission to save the unborn child, Kalki, of SUM-80, a lab subject.

The film was officially announced in February 2020 under the tentative title Prabhas 21, as it is the actor's 21st film in the lead role, later changed to Project K after the arrival of the main cast. Principal photography commenced a year later in July 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic. It was shot sporadically in several legs over the next three years, and wrapped by late-May 2024. The official title was announced in July 2023. The film has music composed by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography handled by Djordje Stojiljkovic and editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao. Made on a 600 crore (US$72 million) production budget, it is the most expensive Indian film.

Kalki 2898 AD was initially scheduled to release on 9 May 2024, but was postponed due to unfinished production works. It was released worldwide on 27 June 2024 in IMAX, 3D and other formats to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics praising the groundbreaking visual effects, performances, narrative and epic scale, while criticising the uneven writing and pacing.[7][8]

Plot

In 3102 BC, after the Kurukshetra War, Ashwatthama attempts to kill Uttarā's child in her womb by invoking the Brahmashirastra. He is subsequently cursed by Krishna to walk the earth as an immortal and the divine gem is also taken from his forehead; his salvation lies in helping Vishnu's last avatar, Kalki, in the Kali Yuga.[a]

In 2898 AD, six thousand years into the Kali Yuga, the desertified city of Kasi is the last known city in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by the totalitarian god king, Supreme Yaskin, from a hovering inverted-pyramidal-megastructure above the city, known as the "Complex". The Complex sucks the Earth’s resources to maintain a gated paradise which can only be entered by the payment of one million "units". Yaskin's rule is enforced by Commander Manas, as the head of his army of Raiders, and Counsellor Bani, who keeps a check against all kinds of threats to Yaskin, especially the arrival of Kalki.

Fertile female refugees in Kasi are forcefully taken to the Complex as part of Project K: an experiment to produce a serum to extend the life of Yaskin, who is already 200 years old, through fetuses created by artificial insemination. However, none of the females are able to carry a fetus for more than 120 days, resulting in their immediate death. Raaya, a young refugee girl crossdressing as a boy, escapes from being enlisted with the help of rebels lead by Rumi, from the hidden city of Shambhala.[b] However, Rumi and Divya, a woman falsely rumored to be pregnant with Kalki, are captured and executed by Manas and the Raiders for failing to reveal Shambhala's location.

Raaya arrives in a cave where she meets Ashwatthama, who is reunited with his gem which Raaya had unknowingly brought from the Shambhala rebels. Teaming up, they venture out to look for Kalki's actual mother. SUM-80, a Project K subject has successfully hidden her 150 day pregnancy, is caught and a drop of serum is eventually extracted by Manas from her fetus, though the procedure is halted by Shambala rebels. They help SUM-80 escape and rechristen her as“Sumathi”. On the way to Shambhala, their convoy is attacked in the Kasi desert by bounty hunters and Raiders after Manas places a bounty of one million units for her capture. The attack is repelled but Kyra, one of the rebels, is killed while trying to protect Sumathi.

Bhairava, one of the bounty hunters who wishes to settle down in the Complex by collecting the units, and his AI supercar, Bujji, remain in hot pursuit. He is stopped and trapped under a statue after a fight with Ashwatthama, who through his gem, comes to known that Sumathi’s unborn child is Kalki. Sumathi, Ashwatthama, Raaya and the rebels eventually reach Shambhala where the tree of life blooms sensing the arrival of Kalki. Bhairava makes a personal deal with Manas to bring back Sumathi in exchange for his entry into the Complex, after he has been banned for life from the Complex for failing to do so.

He finds Shambala by tricking one of its spies and disguises himself as Ashwatthama through holography. Using his disguise, he convinces Sumathi to escape with him from Shambhala under the threat of imminent danger. On the way out, they are intercepted by the real Ashwatthama. Mariam, the leader of Shambhala, whiskes Sumathi away while the fight between Ashwatthama and Bhairava continues. The latter, again being overpowered by Ashwatthama, transforms Bujji into a humanoid fighter to go toe-to-toe with him. Ashwatthama is eventually able to disable Bujji and knock Bhairava down.

Meanwhile Manas, and the Raiders, successfully track Bhairava down to Shambhala. He breaks through Shambala’s protective force fields with the help of a beam weapon from Yaskin. The Raiders overwhelm the Shambhalan army and Mariam is killed during the attack. Manas also immobilizes Ashwatthama by chaining him to the ground. As he is restrained, his walking stick, which is actually a part of Karna's bow (Vijaya), lands in the hands of the unconscious Bhairava. Manas then captures Sumathi and takes her to his ship. Just as Manas's ship and the Raider convoy ships are about to leave Shambhala, they are attacked by a powerful projectile by Bhairava from the now activated stick.

He uses its power to fend off the Raiders, kill Manas, and rescue Sumathi. In a flashback, Bhairava is revealed to be a reincarnation of Karna, Ashwatthama’s friend from the Kurukshetra War. Holding the stick had temporarily transformed Bhairava into Karna; Ashwatthama, elated to see his old friend again, breaks free from his restraints and walks towards him, but is interrupted by Bujji who informs Bhairava about the bounty on Sumathi. This breaks Bhairava's transformation and he takes Sumathi away to an unknown location.

Back at The Complex, Yaskin is informed of Manas’s failure and death by Counsellor Bani, but is given the single drop of serum extracted by him. Yaskin’s body absorbs the drop and he is transformed into a youthful and superhuman bearing multiple arms. Floating mid-air, he then proceeds to pick up Arjuna's bow (Gandiva), which also had been retrieved by Bani earlier. Yaskin tells Bani that he will now personally retrieve Sumathi to extract more serum and reshape the world.

Development

Kalki 2898 AD is the first collaboration of Prabhas with Nag Ashwin.

After the success of Mahanati in 2019, Nag Ashwin stated that he had been working on an original story, for which screenplay he used a long time on. He also stated that the production would begin soon.[25] The project would be funded by C. Aswani Dutt's Vyjayanthi Movies, which also funded Mahanati. The company announced on 7 August that the production would begin in September and posted a casting call for various artist positions.[26][27] On 26 February 2020, coinciding the occasion of 50th year since the establishment of Dutt's house, Prabhas was announced to be the lead actor. Tentatively titled Prabhas 21, production would begin after the actor completes filming for Radhe Shyam (2022).[28] The film was made on a production budget of 600 crore, and Prabhas was reported to receive 150 crore (US$18 million) as his remuneration.[29][30]

The actor, however, reportedly decided to take the revenue sharing model, receiving 80 crore as advance, and a chunk of the profits would be given to him as remuneration.[31] In February 2021, it was reported that the filming would begin in March; however, Ashwin during the promotions for his short film in Pitta Kathalu (2021) stated that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Prabhas' prior commitments, the filming would commence at the latter half of the year.[32] The film's official title, Kalki 2898 AD, was announced on 21 July 2023.[33] It is a reference to Kalki, an avatar of Hindu deity Vishnu in the Hindu eschatology, according to the Bhagavata Purana, and 3102 BC – traditionally thought to be the beginning of Kali Yuga after the Mahabharata War (the film being set 6,000 years into the Kali Yuga, the era of the asura/demon Kali).[34][35][36]

Pre-production

Ashwin co-wrote the film's script along with Rutham Samar, Sai Madhav Burra and B. S. Sarawagna Kumar, in his second consecutive film with Samar and Burra after Mahanati.[37][38] A muhurat pooja ceremony was held on 24 July 2021 at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad with the presence of the film's cast and crew. The working title was revealed to have been changed to Project K the same day.[39] Ashwin stated that the film needed high-end technology and futuristic vehicles to be developed for the film. Although they can be recreated using computer-generated imagery (CGI), the director opted to build these vehicles from scratch.[40]

In March 2022, Ashwin requested businessman Anand Mahindra to provide technical support to build such type of vehicles.[41] A few days later, Mahindra responded that their company Mahindra & Mahindra would assist the production team from their Mahindra Research Valley campus in Chennai.[42] In July 2021, the makers erected a futuristic set at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad where a significant portion of filming is expected to take place.[43] A. R. Rahman had been initially approached, in August 2020, to compose music for the film but the talks fell out.[44]

Ashwin retained most of his technicians, including composer Mickey J. Meyer, editor Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao, production designer Nithin Zihani Choudhary, cinematographer Dani Sanchez-Lopez, costume designers Thota Vijay Bhaskar, Shaleena Nathani and Sahithi Patha.[45] However, Serbian cinematographer, Djordje Stojiljkovic, replaced Dani Sanchez-Lopez as the official cinematographer of the film. In February 2023, Dutt stated in an interview that Santhosh Narayanan replaced Meyer as the composer, along with a female Bollywood composer composing a song for the film.[46] Andreas Nguyen was chosen as the stunt choreographer of the film.[47] Singeetam Srinivasa Rao joined the project to serve as a mentor.[48]

Casting

Prabhas would sport long hair and beard, with reporters reminiscing his look in the film with Baahubali.[49][50] Deepika Padukone was cast as the female lead,[51] in her second Telugu film after the unreleased Love 4 Ever.[52][53] Amitabh Bachchan was confirmed to play an important role, in his Telugu film debut as he had previously only made cameo appearances in Manam (2014) and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019).[54] Ashwin stated that his role was "so important that his character's name [Ashwatthama] was the working title of an early draft".[55] Kamal Haasan also joined the film in an important role,[56] whilst Disha Patani was also cast in an important role.[57] The film marks their return to Telugu cinema after Cheekati Rajyam and Loafer (both 2015), respectively.[56][57]

Rajendra Prasad,[15] Shobhana,[16] Saswata Chatterjee,[13] Brahmanandam,[14] Pasupathy,[58] and Malvika Nair would play prominent roles.[23] Anna Ben would also make her Telugu debut with this film.[59] Keerthy Suresh and Arjun Das appeared in voice only roles respectively; former as Bujji and latter as Lord Krishna.[60][61] Harshith Malgireddy, Kavya Ramachandran, Ayaz Pasha, Anil George, Keya Nair, Vinay Kumar, Venkata Ramana, Hamish Boyd and Sanghawa Shin were present during the film's preliminary shooting schedule.[20] Dulquer Salmaan, Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, S. S. Rajamouli, Ram Gopal Varma and K. V. Anudeep briefly had respective cameo appearances.[22]

Filming

Ramoji Film City, where parts of the film were shot

Principal photography began with the first schedule on 24 July 2021, on the occasion of Guru Purnima, at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad featuring Bachchan.[62] Prabhas and Padukone joined the production in December 2021 and scenes featuring both the actors and Bachchan were shot.[63][64] The second schedule of the shoot took place in February 2022.[65] Instead of shooting the entire film in a single stretch, the team divided its 80–90 days of shoot into 7–8 days every month. This actually allowed the production team to take time and prepare the gadgets and props to be used in the film. Therefore, the production of the film was expected to take longer than usual.[66] DIY Arri Alexa 65 camera was used to shoot the film, thus making it the first Indian film to use this technology.[67]

Prabhas was expected to start filming his solo portions in April 2022,[68] however, his knee surgery led to a delay of his upcoming projects including Salaar and Kalki 2898 AD.[69] 90% of the shoot was done in sets built in Ramoji Film City.[70] In June, Bachchan shot for a scene at Raidurg metro station.[71] In July, Padukone and Prabhas shot for a car chase sequence in Hyderabad.[72] Prabhas completed shooting the majority of his portions by the end of this schedule.[73] Filming was expected to be completed by January 2023, following which post-production and visual effects works would take around 8 months.[74]

However, the film was still being shot in March 2023 when Bachchan injured his ribs and was advised to take rest in Mumbai.[75] Around 70% of the filming was completed by June 2023.[76] On 20 July 2023 at the San Diego Comic-Con, Nag Ashwin revealed that while the film was mostly shot in Telugu, they were also reshooting some scenes in Hindi to make them more impactful.[77] However, the Hindi version is reportedly dubbed.[78] A romantic track featuring Prabhas and Disha Patani was filmed in Italy in March 2024 including at the Royal Palace of Caserta.[79][80] Principal photography wrapped on 28 May.[81]

Post-production

The film features visual effects by the studios Prime Focus DNEG and The Embassy Visual Effects.[82][83] These studios also collaborated with StealthWorks Taiwan, Folks VFX, Lola Visual Effects, Pixstone Images and Labyrinth.[84][85]

DNEG and The Embassy created the film's environments and action sequences. The Embassy handled approximately 700 shots for the film and DNEG handled the principal visual effects and CGI shots for the film.[86] Their tasks included creating a desert wasteland, futuristic vehicles for high-speed chases, utilising a broad range of VFX techniques, and creating 3 distinct worlds of: Kasi, Shambhala, and the Complex.[87]

Music

The music of the film was composed by Santhosh Narayanan.[88] The audio rights of the film were acquired by Saregama.[89]

This concept was later borrowed into the Kalachakra tradition of Tibetan Buddhism where it is described a mystical kingdom somewhere beyond the Himalayas and also as a state of mind.[17][18]
