Scope

This is a WikiProject on elements of the Latter Day Saint movement, Mormonism, Latter Day Saint history, doctrine, practices, and other cultural effects inspired by Joseph Smith, Jr..

This project is closely related to Wikipedia:WikiProject Utah

Project Style Guidelines

See:

Some quick points to remember:

  • Articles wholly pertaining to the Latter Day Saint movement should be parenthesized "(Latter Day Saints)", unless the article name is unambiguous without the parenthetical.
  • Articles should not be limited to a single Latter Day Saint denomination, unless including the entire Latter Day Saint movement is impractical or awkward. For example, instead of "Restoration (Community of Christ)" or "Restoration (LDS Church)", you would call the article Restoration (Latter Day Saints).
  • In article names, references to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should capitalize the initial The and include a hyphen and a lower-case "d".
  • In general, use the term Mormon or its derivatives only when referring to people or denominations with historical ties to Utah-based The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Deadlinks are discouraged as they tend to attract POV material on religious subjects.
  • Apply the {{LDS-stub}} boilerplate message at the end of stubs.

Timeline

There's a timeline based on LDS (1850s-on) and Mormonism (centuries and 1820s-1840s) in general. For specific dates (eg, June 1, 1944) you should link normally. You should also show a link to the timeline somewhere on the page (probably in "see also" or in See ... bits) as appropriate. You can start here to see the timeline: 19th century (Mormonism).

I'll try to get this thing started sometime next week (I'll get it done, no worry)-The Scurvy Eye 19:52, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe Eschatology (Mormonism) would be a better title? CaliforniaKid 03:07, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What the heck does that mean? I don't think it would be a better title because nobody would understand it. --Pahoran513 03:11, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Eschatology is the study of the end times or last things. It encompasses not only the second coming, but also any beliefs about antichrist, tribulation, rapture, resurrection, new creation, etc. I suggest it because while the second coming is a worthy topic, I think these other things are worthy topics also. You could make Second Coming (Mormonism) a redirect page that points to Eschatology (Mormonism). But it's just a suggestion, and I realize that Latter-day Saints often try to avoid technical theological terminology. CaliforniaKid 03:18, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that the Eschatology article contains a section on Mormonism. Perhaps this could serve as a precedent, and rather than creating a new page, we could add to the Second Coming article a subsection on the doctrine's form, role, and function in Mormonism. CaliforniaKid 03:20, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds worthy to me. CaliforniaKid 03:07, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

I recently reverted/removed this LDS history material as it was not not directly applicable to the article as presently constituted. But the article is very brief and quite incomplete. I hope to work on it in the next few months, and would love help. WBardwin 05:48, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Accuracy disputed

Neutrality questioned

There is currently an allegation by editors at the article Noah's Ark that mentioning the status of Noah / Gabriel and his Ark in the LDS Church Scriptures constitutes "undue weight", because Mormons are an "insignificant minority"... Editor who removed all mention of Mormon beliefs challenges opponents to "gain consensus for mentioning Mormonism first. This is only the latest in several ongoing problems at that article with a few dominant editors who make no secret of their hostility to all forms of faith. Til Eulenspiegel 21:27, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. Is there really any unique Latter Day Saint viewpoint on Noah's Ark? I don't think there's anything worth mentioning. Maybe the Noah and Ham (son of Noah) articles, but not the Noah's Ark article. COGDEN 23:44, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that the article on Noah's Ark should list all the various scriptures where the Ark is actually mentioned, even if nothing unique is added -- which would include the Book of Mormon (Ether 6:7) and also Book of Moses, alongside the scriptures of various other faiths that mention the Ark, like the Old and New Testaments, the Quran, the Bahai scriptures, and even the other scriptures of some smaller religions indigenous to the Ararat region. But I am running into an unbelievable level of personal attacks, hostility, and general opposition to my idea of mentioning all the references to Noah's Ark in the scriptures of these various modern-day religions. Please see also: User talk:Til Eulenspiegel. Til Eulenspiegel 23:56, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would drop the issue, personally. Although maybe that kind of information could be put in footnotes in some cases, I don't really think there's a pressing need to cite scriptures unless the scripture says something unique about the ark that isn't already covered by the Bible. I don't think it's worth the fight. COGDEN 18:46, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's not that urgent an issue, I predict that ultimately in its ideal form, maybe 5, 10 years down the road, the "list of the scriptures that mention the ark" could actually include BoM right alongside the Old and New Testaments, the Quran, the Kitab-i-Iqtan, the Mes'hef Resh, and the "Mandaean scriptures". I am not pursuing the issue just now, because there is now a much more alarming issue of bias, bigotry and favoritism arising from the handling of all of this at User talk:Til Eulenspiegel. Til Eulenspiegel 18:52, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • First Vision - In the middle of a POV dispute and edit war. This is in need of somebody who can help moderate the discussion, although the talk page is certainly spilling over with plenty of comments. There is plenty of raw material already presented to raise this to an A-class article if the POV issues can be resolved, including many citable references. --Robert Horning 04:33, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Script-generated to-do lists

/Articles needed

553 red links compiled from nearly all of the articles in the Category:Mormonism hierarchy. I've listed the Mormonism-related articles that employ each red link because many of them are obvious mistakes that should be fixed on the page. Some should also be redirects to prevent similar mistakes in the future. I've also listed the number of main namespace links-to.

Many of these have nothing whatsoever to do with the Latter Day Saint movement, but I believe this list is interesting. Many secular links need to be fixed anyway.

/Requested stubs

This list compiled from Category:LDS stubs, listed in order of number of links-to, excluding wikilinks from user pages and wikipedia namespace. Note that the {{LDS-stub}} template causes every LDS stub to have a self-referential link. Therefore, every article has one less link-to than this list shows. Thus, articles listed her have one less link-to than it would appear. Therefore the articles with "1" link-to are in fact orphans. Cool Hand Luke 07:36, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Heh. this dif shows that Mormon (prophet) is now beating Spencer W. Kimball for links. Meanwhile, Hyrum Smith has gained nine links since November, jumping up into the top ten. Cool Hand Luke 07:45, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I've decided to start tackling the temples list. Does anyone know of someplace that offers fair use pictures of any of the temples? Sue Anne 22:57, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize - I was negligent in adding my projects to this list. For anyone interested in critiquing, reviewing or editing, I have been working on the following tasks:

  1. Expansion of stub Nahom to full article.
  2. Expansion of stub Bountiful (Book of Mormon) to full article.
  3. Complete reorganization of Archaeology and the Book of Mormon
  4. Created article Limited Geography Model (Book of Mormon)
  5. Created article Mormonism Unvailed
  6. Expansion of article An Insider's View of Mormon Origins
  7. Creation of stubs for Shazer and Joseph Smith: The Making of a Prophet

I've started a draft of an article on Zenos. I will create the actual article page when I'm done getting things ready. The work-in-progress may be viewed here. Chiros Sunrider 00:38, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help wanted

I posted many images about the Book of Mormon and about Mormons on wikipedia. They are there now for a long time. But suddenly came a administratorUser talk:Pascal.Tesson and wants to delete all images. I uploaded this images with a fair use rational. The images are used for Family Home Evening and I think this explains everything. Everybody is allowed to use them. This is the Gospel Art Picture Kit. Furthermore the LDS position of fair use is:[1] Notwithstanding the foregoing, we reserve sole discretion and right to deny, revoke, or limit use of this site, including reproduction. It is not our responsibility, however, to determine what "Fair Use" means for persons wishing to use materials from this site. That remains wholly a responsibility of the user. Further, we are not required to give additional source citations, nor to guarantee that the materials are cleared for alternate uses. Such ultimately remains the responsibility of the user. However, the Church maintains the right to prevent infringement of its materials and to interpret "Fair Use" as it understands the law. Furthermore I used also non-Church images to explain Mormon science, like [Image:Lehi Trail.jpg] Please help me to protect this images on wikipedia. This images should stay on wikipedia. I think there is an anti-mormon bias on wikipedia.

  • Jgardner is looking for help in writing biographies on the church leaders. Contact him on his talk page if you want to help. He can show you what he is doing and where to go to get information. Even if you aren't a good writer, there is plenty of other work needed in correlating dates and various things.
  • bhludzin - thank you for everyone who has done such a great job on the List of temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There are now articles on all of the existing temples. Now we need properly licensed pictures of all of the temples uploaded to Wikipedia so that they can be added to the articles and also to the list (check out the list - it is looking great!) I have gone to web sites, found some pictures, and asked the owners for permission via e-mail, and uploaded them. Please do not upload pictures without permission, the bots will just remove them. If you have any photos, or have friends with photos, please upload them. Thank you!
  • Jerry Crimson Mann is translating the article Mormon handcart pioneers into Chinese. He wants to know about the title of a book listed in the references, which is "Hafen and Hafen". What does "Hafen" mean in this case? Does it refer to "heaven"? Or does it mean "harbor" in the German language? He's looking forward to your reply. :)
  • Chiros Sunrider will soon be attempting to create a Book of Mormon category template. He would like a good image of golden plates (which is useable per WP:IUP) to use for it, preferably similar to this image. Any help would be appreciated.

Sixth Column

The Sixth Column article was recently tagged with being part of thie project. It has been a few years since I read this book, but this book seems too far removed from this project. Why was it tagged? — Val42 03:13, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Val, I read the article, but I have not read the book. If there is any connection it was not included in the article. I deleted the category. What I found interesting is the category itself and the articles that have been included. Some are obvious, but others have very little in common with LDS or Mormons. Strange.--Storm Rider (talk) 05:25, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is indeed true. I have been tagging a lot of articles lately for the project moving though mormon-/LDS–related categories, ususally tagging everything in sight. This method obviously has the disadvantage of being indiscriminate in perpetuating errors of judgment (or ill will) committed by previous editors. I hope, though, that most will agree to my continued endeavor in this respect, as there is a huge backlog of project-related articles that don't carry the project banner, and hence are only indirectly visible to project members. Also, this constitutes a bottleneck for recruiting new members. Category:Portrayals of Mormons in popular media was in fact remarkable in the way that a lot of its entries didn't expound any relation to mormonism bar the categorization itself. However, since I a) weren't familiar with any of the works, and b) didn't become aware of this awkward phenomenon until I was well on my way to having worked through it all, I believe all entries here have now been tagged with the LDSproject banner. I think it would be beneficial if someone with a keen knowledge of LDS culture would re-check all articles in that particular category and remove all entries (as well as the spuriously added category, which Storm Rider did) that obviously shouldn't have this connection asserted. Perhaps some little investigation may be called for in some instances: i.e. querying the editor who added the article to the mormon-related category. In all cases that aren't positively spurious, a notice on the article's talk page would be prudent, I think. __meco 07:28, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good counsel. I believe that User:Uncle G added the category to one of the articles I checked. I will go back and check. The only thing I got out of the article is that an individual was racist; there may have been a prophet involved also. But those are hardly traits of Mormonism...there have been many prophets and many racists. It is too easy to perceive an editor is not acting in good faith, which is not acceptable; posting a note on their talk page will quickly clarify motivation. Good points, thanks. --Storm Rider (talk) 07:49, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
