Infamous: Second Son (stylized as inFAMOUS: Second Son) is an upcoming open world action-adventure video game, developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 video game console. The third main entry in the Infamous series, which had previously been developed for the PlayStation 3, will be released on March 21, 2014.

Gameplay

Infamous is set in a open world setting, where the player can do as they please. Parkour is a major element and players can destroy the environment to their use. The player starts with the smoke element and obtains other powers by defeating other conduits. Instead of locking aim with L1, players can shoot at any time. Delsin can go through air vents and as the player expands their powers, they can execute bigger moves to create more damage to enemies and the environment.

Plot

Second Son is set seven years after the good ending of Infamous 2, in which Cole MacGrath activated the Ray Field Inhibitor (RFI) to destroy a Conduit (superhumans named for their ability to "channel" powers) named John White, also known as the Beast and cure the Plague. The explosion that resulted was originally thought to have killed all Conduits across the globe; however, those outside of the blast radius or with a natural resistance have survived. Fearing the Conduits' abilities after the destruction of Empire City, the US eastern seaboard and the worldwide economy, the Department of Unified Protection (DUP) is formed. Now, major cities across the United States are heavily monitored for Conduit activity, whom the DUP have labeled collectively as "bio-terrorists".

The game is set in Seattle, Washington, now under DUP jurisdiction. Players control Delsin Rowe, a 24 year-old slacker graffiti artist, who wants to help the community by protesting against the government, which he hates. Because his brother, Reggie, is a police officer, Delsin does not have a good connection with him, seeing as his brother has arrested him numerous times. After unknowingly helping a conduit out of the wreckage of a DUP truck, Delsin is attacked. He wakes up with 'powers' including the ability to use a smoke dash and later finds out he can use these powers offensively. Reggie wants to help Delsin find a cure for him being a conduit and helps him to fight back against the government. Delsin then finds out that he can absorb other conduit's powers for his own use. These powers include smoke, neon, and video. The developers have said these powers are "the tip of the iceberg".

Development

Infamous: Second Son was revealed at the PlayStation Meeting on February 20, 2013.[2] While his power initially appeared to just control smoke, Sucker Punch has stated in interviews that Delsin's ability is actually to absorb the abilities of other conduits. Currently, the only powers shown are smoke and neon light based, but Sucker Punch has revealed that he will absorb more powers, and that these are only the "tip of the iceberg."

Actors portray their characters via a combination of motion capture and voice work. The technology was also enhanced to include capture of the actors' facial expressions. As such, the characters all bear resemblance to their respective actors, Troy Baker and Laura Bailey among others, who previously had only been known among gamers for their voices.

On February 25, 2014, it was announced that Infamous: Second Son had gone gold.[3]

On March 3, 2014, it was confirmed that Infamous: Second Son digital download size for the PlayStation 4 version would be 24GB. [4] On March 8, it was announced that Infamous: Second Son has surpassed the pre-order sales of The Last Of Us in the United Kingdom.[5]

Reception

Critical reception of Second Son has been positive, earning positive reviews from most major gaming publications. Vince Ingenito of IGN rated the game with a 8.7 praising the gameplay and the open world as well as the side missions and everything you can do in infamous but criticizing the story and morality issues stating that Second Son is a departure in tone for the Infamous series, but its superpowered action lives up to expectations.[18] Tom Mc Shea of GameSpot rated the game a 8.0 also praising the gameplay and the open world style but criticizing the morality again and that Delsin is an annoying character.[19]
