Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

    November 12

I have failed when trying to add a file from Commons into the info. box. The file is now at the very top of this page. Sorry. It is of a crest - I also have added a reference which describes crest. Please place INSIDE the box if you are able - at the very top I think it should go. Thanks 101.189.107.58 (talk) 01:20, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I put it outside the infobox, as it is in Thomas Hungerford (Speaker). I think the portrait that's already there at the top is better. Clarityfiend (talk) 03:19, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That is NOT a crest, it is a coat of arms. I delight in heraldry used in articles where it was clearly relevant to the subject's era; but please get the terminology right. I suggest you start with achievement (heraldry) and study the components of a full achievement of arms. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:49, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    writing an article on Wikipedia

Kindly give me information about how to write an article here. What is the basic procedure I must follow . Which type of reference I must give . Can topic be of mechanical only. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shivam Joshi MEC (talkcontribs) 03:18, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Your first article is a good place to start. The answer to your "which type" question depends on the subject about which you are interested in writing; if you could quickly explain (just a sentence or two), I could give you a better answer. And I don't understand what you mean about "can topic be of mechanical only"; could you please elaborate? Nyttend (talk) 03:27, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How can i include references or bibliography references to any articles on Wikipedia ?

    Dear Wikipedia Administrators

Is it possible to include Bibliography references from text books or any books on any wikipedia articles ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Showerman05 (talkcontribs) 07:31, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Showerman. Your question is not clear; but if you are asking whether you can cite books as references in Wikipedia articles, the answer is certainly yes, provided they are reliably published (published by reputable publishers). Self-published books may be cited in limited cases (see WP:SELFPUB, but book a from publisher with no reputation is probably not going to be regarded as a reliable source, and so should not normally be cited. Please see referencing for beginners for more on this, and how to cite.
If you mean, can you take items from the bibliography of a a book, and cite those directly in a Wikipedia article, the answer is that you should not cite any source unless you have seen it yourself.
    Have I answered your question? --ColinFine (talk) 16:42, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Template:PD-shape and stub-templates

Why is PD-shape mentioned on "See also" section of documentation for many stub-templates? For example, on Template:Ornithology-stub#See also or Template:Russia-geo-stub#See also. Alex Spade (talk) 16:03, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It was added to {{Stub documentation}} by Hyacinth with no explanation.[1] I don't see a reason for it. {{Stub documentation}} has 28436 transclusions which produce section edit links to it. Maybe Hyacinth clicked edit on a page where the link is helpful without realising 28000 other pages would get it. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:03, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Diego Sanchez

Diego is still alive! You have him as died in the ring against Matt Brown? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.63.205.184 (talk) 17:03, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It was vandalism, removed three minutes before your post was saved. If you still see it then bypass your cache. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:09, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)If this refers to the Wikipedia page Diego Sanchez, he is shown there as still alive. Unfortunately there was some earlier vandalism to the Wiki page which has since been corrected.
If you are referring to the results of a Google search as here Wikipedia has no control over what is displayed there although the way it is shown often implies that it comes from Wikipedia. There is a 'feedback' link at the bottom of the Google search panel where that information is displayed. Eagleash (talk) 17:16, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If an user is no longer an administrative user -- bureaucrat, steward, administrator et cetera -- on project not English Wikipedia, shall description on user pages be editing accordingly.

Per title, what shall an user do? -- Ktsquare (talk) 17:56, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A user may do nothing or may do something. What is your question? Ruslik_Zero 18:06, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The section title is the question? -- Ktsquare (talk) 18:09, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Ktsquare. I'm afraid if you are talking about another Wikipedia, then probably no one here can help you. Each language Wikipedia is an independent project, with its own rules and pollcies.
I think that what you are askingis, if a user has mentioned their status as an admin etc on their user page, and they cease to have those permissions, they must remove the claim from their user page? And if they don't may somebody else do so? That's an interesting question. I can't find any policy on the question in English Wikipedia (but as I say, other Wikipedias may have different policies anyway). --ColinFine (talk) 22:19, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Here at en:wp, we remove such claims, because it produces confusion among those who are looking for someone with those user rights. I don't know what other projects do. Nyttend (talk) 03:42, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Creating new page

I am working in a pgae for the band LAW, The band has a great bio on there website, but almost no other published info. Is there a way i can still reference this? even though it is the subjects on page- update: read farther into the policies and got it cleared up — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jahisreal (talkcontribs) 18:58, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Is this problem solved now? If not, you can reference their official website if they have enough info about the band. However, you have to be sure the source you're citing meets Wikipedia's policies. Check Wikipedia:Citing sources for more info.

    Happy Editing!

Hello, Jahisreal. If there is "almost no other published info" about a band other than their own website, then the band is not notable and is ineligible for a Wikipedia article at this time. Glen Jacobs

I am making an edit for Glen Jacobs by adding his political party. I think that is necessary considering he is currently running for political office. My edit however, is not showing up on his page. Why is this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lmike1330 (talkcontribs) 20:25, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(Referring to edits of Kane (wrestler).) Because the template "Infobox professional wrestler" does not support a field "political party". The infobox templates (like all templates) only support fields they are coded to handle. I suggest you put this in the body of the article instead of infobox. @G Kalpana: This is your only edit from this account so we don't have any idea what you are talking about unless you tell us. As for the image, where did you find this image? If you just found it on the Internet somewhere please do not upload it here. It is most likely copyrighted and uploading it here will result in it being deleted. If you want more information I'm going to need to know exactly what article and what image you are talking about. --Majora (talk) 21:25, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    El Tùnel

    Good morning,

I have a very serious issue with the resume of the book El Tùnel from Ernesto Sabàto. Yes, in fact, this is a book that was very much recommended to me and I was looking forward and happy to read it. I get to the Wikipedia page, start reading this resume. And there it is. The spoiler that ruined my appreciation for this novel. You cannot just put the ending of a book in a resume. You stick to the general history, just as in the back of a book. Unfortunately, it is impossible to rewind and forget this ending, which is, by the way, very tragic. But I think it is only fair that I spoil you a very important even in literary history : Dumbledore dies. Have a good day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christinaaguilera1234 (talkcontribs) 23:37, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Christinaaguilera1234, sorry for your experience. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and our content guidelines follow the philosophy that it is not acceptable to delete information from an article because one believes it spoils the plot. There is also consensus amongst Wikipedia editors to not include spoiler alerts in articles. Wikipedia's content guidelines on spoilers and on disclaimers in articles has information relevant to your query. May I also request you to go through WP:IMPERSONATE? The strong suggestion is to not edit under a name that is likely to imply that you are (or are related to) a specific, identifiable person, unless it is your real name. If you have the same name as a well-known person to whom you are unrelated, and are using your real name, you should state clearly on your userpage that you are unrelated to the well-known person. Please feel free to ask for further clarification. Thanks, Lourdes 03:14, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If one wishes to read a book without knowing in advance how the plot develops, its a good idea to not read an encyclopedia article about that book, particularly a section of that article entitled "Plot summary."
As a (former) bookseller, I've actually come across several books whose vital plot twists are given away in the back cover blurbs. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.200.138.27 (talk) 22:26, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Some editors gather themselves into projects, including Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles. Please feel free to join that project and see how they do things, Make your suggestion there, perhaps on the project's talk page, and by all means chip in and help. Note that since those guys, like us on the help desk, are volunteers, you might get better results by using a slightly more positive tone. -Arch dude (talk) 02:27, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Redirects and categories

Should redirect pages generally be in article categories? Eg. Anna Pulitzer. Nikkimaria (talk) 04:48, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nikkimaria, as per our redirect categorization guidelines, "Redirects are not usually sorted to article categories; however, there are exceptions." Details on such exceptions can be found at Wikipedia:Categorizing redirects#Article categories. Hope this helps. Thanks, Lourdes 05:25, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My wikipedia page is not searchable or visible in the google search or wikipedia search itself.

I have my wikipedia page named Prabhakar More which is not visible throughout the google search or wikipedia search itself. What should I do now to make visible the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prabhakar More (talkcontribs) 08:13, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please post, here, a full URL to it. Thanks. • SbmeirowTalk08:16, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Prabhakar More: I would assume the page is Draft:Prabhakar More. It will not be visible to search engines as long as it is a draft (and even in mainspace where Wikipedia articles live, it will not be visible to search engines until it has been reviewed by a new page patroller).
In its current state, the draft is unlikely to go to the mainspace. Judging by your username, you are highly encouraged to read our advice at Wikipedia:Autobiography, as well as our policies about "notability". TigraanClick here to contact me 10:08, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Prabhakar More. I'm sorry you are having an unrewarding experience, but I'm afraid that, like many people, you have a misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is, and what it is for. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, which contains neutral articles about notable subjects, based almost exclusively on what has been published about the subject by independent people. It may not be used for promotion of any kind, and autobiography is strongly discouraged. The draft Draft:Prabhakar More has not been submitted for review, and would certainly not be accepted in its current form, as it has not one single reference. (And drafts are intentionally not indexed by search engines, as they have not yet been accepted as Wikipedia articles).
If you wish to get your draft to an acceptable level (discouraged, as it is about yourself, but not forbidden), I suggest you read your first article, and then find several places where people who have no connection with you have published in-depth pieces about you. If you cannot find such places, give up. If you can, then throw away everything you have written, forget everything you know about yourself (difficult!) and write a new article based solely on what those people unconnected to you have written. --ColinFine (talk) 10:09, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Page on Betterez and the concept of reservations and ticketing management

Hi, I am receiving some pushback about a page I am trying to create on Betterez and the concept of Reservations and Ticketing Management. A page on this subject would be useful as many major companies are using this ticketing technology to improve their ticketing and reservations systems. Major investors such as JetBlue Technology Ventures and Amadeus Ventures have invested in this company and having a dedicated Wikipedia page would help others who are doing research on the subject. How do I go about doing this? I received a few comments from your team about how it's not suitable but I'm having trouble understanding why technology that is impacting travel around the world isn't suitable. Betterez has had several press articles written about it and can link to outside sources. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.99.145.70 (talk) 19:37, 13 November 2017‎ (UTC)[reply]

The image is fine where it is. Wikitext search

Is it possible to search the original Wikitext of articles? I'm wanting to find articles in the living people category which link to specific articles, such as United Kingdom general election, 1950, but in many cases the links are piped, so a search for incategory:"Living people" "United Kingdom general election, 1950" is not finding them. I could try and check every link coming in to the article in question, but there are more than 1,000 for this article alone, so I'm hoping for an automated method and being able to search the original Wikitext would solve this. Collapsed text not displaying

I've been working on formatting something on a different wiki, and when I collapse a specific text it shows up as {{{1}}}, and I cannot figure out why. You haven't given much detail here, but one thing to check is whether the collapsed text contains an equals sign anywhere, for example, hidden inside a URL. The workaround is to stick 1= in front of the text: {{My collapse template|Some text with an = sign}} won't work, but {{My collapse template|1=Some text with an = sign}} should be OK. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:23, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That is certainly the most likely explanation when {{{1}}} is displayed. It's the issue at the first bullet at Help:Template#Usage hints and workarounds. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:40, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Anybody "cool" around with any insight? GMGtalk 16:05, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Top 100 DJs

    Hello

The 2017 part of List of DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJs is just not true.

Can someone block the person who did this?

    Thanks

    WhatsUpWorld (talk) 17:29, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@WhatsUpWorld: Please be more specific about what is wrong. The list in the article appears to match the source. RudolfRed (talk) 20:46, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The "Top 100 DJs – 2017" does not match its unique source. WhatsUpWorld (talk) 21:55, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I looked very quickly at the page section and the 2017 source. It did not seem to match to me; third place has been moved to fifth in the article, fourth to third and an apparent 'oddity' inserted at fourth. That's as far as I had time to go into. @WhatsUpWorld: you are quite welcome to correct the page in accordance with the source. Eagleash (talk) 22:04, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The 2017 part of the article was changed as was its data (review part); I don't know how to revert all of it without spending one hour on it. WhatsUpWorld (talk) 22:07, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes the offending edit was here. Yes it's a lot of work to correct unless someone has the appropriate tools enabled. Eagleash (talk) 22:10, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    What tools? May be I can help. Aditya(talkcontribs) 02:24, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    TV Show Character Articles

At what point does a character from a TV show merit their own Wikipedia page? What if said show is ongoing? Justus et peccator (talk) 18:17, 14 November 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justus et peccator (talkcontribs) 18:15, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As with any other subject, Justus et peccator, the criterion to decide whether there should be an article on the subject is nothing directly do to with what the subject does, or is, or is known as, but wholly to do with whether there is enough independent reliably published material on the subject to base an article on. If somebody has written an extended article specifically about the character in a reputable newspaper or magazine; or if several in-depth articles about the show contain more than just a sentence or two about the character, that might do it. Please see WP:GNG. --ColinFine (talk) 19:16, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia Wrongful Accusation !

hello , i received a message accusing me of a violation that i had nothing to do with , the accusation was ' that i made an edit to "Ape". and to be sure NO ONE, and i mean no one , has used my devices to make such edits as Wikipedia has falsely accused me of .obviously someone has hacked and used my IP address to , as wiki says " make inappropriate and false edits to APE , i use and was planning on donating to Wikipedia but am retracting that plan until Wikipedia at least takes as much time to resolve this issue born of false accusations as they have to start it in the first place . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chevy1981 (talkcontribs) 20:18, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, it's possible that you may have a dynamic IP address that means your IP address may well have changed to another user who added the vandalism to that page. Feel free to disregard any messages that are not relevant to yourself. In cases such as this, account creation is encouraged to avoid erroneous messages, which I see you have now done. This should prevent any further messages regarding other user's edits from being posted on your talk page Hope this helps. Kosack (talk) 20:25, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The same thing happened to me today, and I was puzzled until I realised that I wasn't logged in. Now that you have created an account, the problem can't happen again as long as you log in, and the message will not be associated with you. Dbfirs 20:33, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As is usual ' wiki has proved itself a champion to public discourse and was more than expedient in resolving this issue! donations are back on course . Thanks a million .— Preceding unsigned comment added by Chevy1981 (talkcontribs) 14 November 2017 20:51 (UTC)

    English or British

    Hello,

On the Dua Lipa article, user SnapSnap keeps reverting my edits: she is a British singer, not an English one (see British nationality law). Can someone other than me replace English by British in the catch phrase? Thanks

    WhatsUpWorld (talk) 21:58, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is a long-term thorny issue (with many other artists). Don't get into an edit-war over it. As I understand it, unless she has stated at some point that she considers herself English rather than British, we should go with British as nationality. Eagleash (talk) 22:14, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As a content dispute, it should be resolved by discussion with the other editor, preferably at the article talk page. Eagleash (talk) 22:34, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Sutcliffe Jugend

Hi, I play in a band called Sutcliffe Jugend. In the pictures on your website is a picture of the cassette called White Power and a Nazi symbol. We had nothing to do with that cassette, a track was put on without our permission, back in 1982. This does not represent the band or our political feelings, plus the picture of ripper victims. This is a gross misrepresentation of the band. We have children and do not want them to see this. We play noise/industrial music. We tackle extreme topics, but do not glorify in any way.. we do the opposite if you listen to the words.

    Please amend this misrepresentation.

Kind Regards Paul Taylor — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.65.175.251 (talk) 22:41, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Paul. We have over five million articles: which are you referring to? There is no image in the article Sutcliffe Jügend (and it hasn't been edited for over a year).
Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. The same feedback facility is also provided on Bing and some other search engines. --ColinFine (talk) 23:35, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A problem with Google Image search and their Knowledge Graph, and it is notoriously hard to get Google to change them, no one knows who to contact. They need to have an ombudsman. --RAN (talk) 05:41, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help with possibly advanced text editing

Hi, I would like the place words on top of each other. Take this piece of text:

    17 86 CO 80 37 32 56 Read Words KONA 3 6 Read Letters S D

Is it possible to place 17 atop Read, 86 above KONA, CO above 3, 80 above 6, 37 above Read Letters, 32 above S and 56 above D. I could put them in a table, so they are in tabular format, but is there another way to format them.

    thanks. scope_creep (talk) 22:46, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Scope creep. You might be able to do something with tabs, but really, that is what tables are designed for. Note that you can customise the layout of tables, so for example the cell boundaries can be hidden. --ColinFine (talk) 23:39, 14 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

could somebody please look at this page, when I open it I get a strange banner from wikileaks? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.21.34.157 (talk) 08:30, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting us know - this has now been resolved by purging the page. It was the result of a "template hijack" -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 08:31, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

please help - ref number 27 which is a book. I added in the IBSN number and it was VERY long. I was SURE that I got it right. I am sorry. Please help. Also, I have failed when adding a commons file of an old church - "All Hallows, Stailing" Please help. 101.189.107.58 (talk) 10:12, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. You actually added two ISBN nmbers, ISBN 10 and ISBN 13. I removed the 10 and works OK. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 10:21, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry - bad timing . I also failed with a commons file. It should have worked. The file should say "All Hallows, Stailing, England". Please help 101.189.107.58 (talk) 10:25, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Did you successfully upload the said image to Commons? If so, could you provide the URL? -- ChamithN (talk) 10:30, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This URL is from Commons and is currently on the "All Hallows, Staining" page itself. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/66/PAHSt1010012.JPG — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.189.107.58 (talk) 10:36, 15 November 2017‎ (UTC)[reply]
I'm getting a 404 Not Found error. Once you have uploaded an image to commons, it should look something like this. Did you, by any chance, cancel the upload wizard halfway through? -- ChamithN (talk) 10:46, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I never uploaded the image. The black and white old print (file) is already on the All Hallows, Staining Wikipedia page and I thought that I could transfer it over to the Stephen Bachiler page. Please help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.189.107.58 (talk) 10:50, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean this image? -- ChamithN (talk) 10:52, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Fixed I have added the image; using the file name contained in the wikimedia URL above. Eagleash (talk) 10:56, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If that's the case, don't worry, Eagleash has already taken care of it. -- ChamithN (talk) 10:54, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The spelling is incorrect (probably my fault). It should say underneath the file "All Hallows, Staining, England" (not Stailing) Sorry again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.189.107.58 (talk) 10:55, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
