On 22 September 2018, a military parade was attacked in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz.[4][5] Both the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz[3] and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant[3] claimed responsibility for the attack.[6]

Iran claims that USA, Saudi Arabia and Mossad are responsible for the attack [7]

Attack

The annual parade was a part of the annual commemoration, known as the Sacred Defence Week, of the start in 1980 of the Iran–Iraq War. It included Revolutionary Guards marching along Quds, or Jerusalem, Boulevard in Ahvaz.[4][8][9]

On 22 September 2018, at 09:00 local time, four gunmen wearing military uniforms disguised as Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and Basiji (volunteers)[10] began shooting at the parade from a nearby park.[11] According to Fars News Agency, "The attackers fired at civilians and attempted to attack military officials on the podium."[12] The attack lasted about ten minutes.[11]

Casualties

Assailants

According to the local deputy governor, Ali Hosein Hoseinzadeh, two gunmen were killed by security forces and the other two were arrested.[11] International media reported that all four assailants were killed.[13][11]

Civilians and soldiers

At least 29 people, including several soldiers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, were killed and 70 others including children wounded.[14][15][16] Many were taken to hospital in critical condition, while the death toll was expected to rise.[17]

Responsibility

The Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz (ASMLA) were the first to claim responsibility for the terrorist attack,[3] Yaqoob Al-Ahvaz (Yaghub Hur Totsari,[18] Yagoub Hor Altasteri[6]) claimed responsibility in comments to UK-based Iran International TV. He said that his group Ahvaz National Resistance, a part of ASMLA, has "no choice but to resist."[19] On 23 September, a statement made in The Hague, Netherlands, on the ASMLA website, denied responsibility for the attack, saying that the claim was made by a "group that was expelled from the organization since 2015".[20][21]

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant also claimed responsibility.[3]

Iranian state media reported that "takfiri gunmen" executed the assault.[22]

Reactions

Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei wrote on his website: "This crime is a continuation of the plots of the regional states that are puppets of the United States, and their goal is to create insecurity in our dear country."[13] He also called on security forces to bring those responsible to justice.[13] Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the governments of the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Denmark to "condemn the attack and extradite people linked to it to Iran to be put on trial."[13] On 23 September, the ministry summoned the United Arab Emirates' representative over comments about the attack.[23]

Former Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi II also condemned the attack and condolences with the families of victims and the armed forces of Iran.[24]

International

Russia and Syria were the first two countries to react. President of Russia Vladimir Putin said he was "horrified" and presented his condolences while the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the terrorist attack and warned those who finance terrorism in the region.[25] Pakistan, through the country's Foreign office's spokesperson, Mohammad Faisal, also condemned the attack.[26]
