Would Like to Merge A Page

Misjudged the amount of information available for page Hello, it would seem I overestimated the amount of information available for a locally owned newspaper, especially for someone who has never been to the location. It would seem the original owner, the Clermont Sun Publishing Company, inc, had serval other newspapers, or at least according to the Ohio Security of State website. https://bizimage.ohiosos.gov/api/image/pdf/5486_0651 https://bizimage.ohiosos.gov/api/image/pdf/200110002356 I would like to create a page called Clermont Sun Publishing Company, Inc., than merge it with The Highland County Press. I hope this will allow it to meet Wikipedia's guidelines. Does this sound reasonable? P3771 (talk) 23:20, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome. Are there independent sources that are reliable, to show the notability of the publishing company? That should be addressed first. Pyrrho the Skeptic (talk) 01:12, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any advice for verifying sources? Other then the images from the Ohio government website, I think my sources include an obituary from the papers, https://browncountypress.com/news/100/william-c-latham-and-a-legacy-of-service, and https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_oh/1872832. Is there a tool for suggesting key words to search for based on an article?

Something that will find all proper nouns and rare terminology in an article? Better yet, is there a wiki page listing similar tools? Ran8dom9 (talk) 02:24, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ran8dom9 Do you mean: "is there a way to analyse an article for sufficiently unusual keywords which would later on help you or other users to re-find that article?" That sounds somewhat oxymoronic to me. But WP:WIKILINKS within an article do help you find other articles relevant to the source page. I'm not sure if there's a tool available that would simply list all those wikilinks in a page. You may wish to follow links at Wikipedia:Tools where I found 'Find Link'. I've not assessed how it operates, but I used it on Mont Blanc massif and found these results which might interest you. Sorry I can't help further. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:56, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes

"re-find that article?" no. to find other internet pages not part of wikipedia with something interesting in them regarding the current article. Ran8dom9 (talk) 03:06, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ran8dom9 Obviously, the References section give you those. But I think you’ll have to use your own skills with a search engine to find stuff. Whenever an article is put up for a Deletion discussion, there’s a template of search tool links provided to help users find new sources. You could investigate that, if you wished. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:16, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes you mean something like Find sources: ".17 Rimfire" – news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ? This is useful. Ran8dom9 (talk) 00:00, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes and Ran8dom9: Those search links are also included in the header at the top of article talk pages. 86.23.109.101 (talk) 00:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bear Creek Studio

Hello,

I thought it would be fun to fix up the Bear Creek Studio page. Once I started digging into it, I quickly realized the source code and works cited are super messy and it would be so much easier to just rewrite the page. They have plenty of notability, I'd like to completely rework the works cited. They were mentioned in Dave Grohl's new book, that's how I learned about them. When I looked them up on Google New listings there are tons of reputable sources about them and they have a long list of hit records they have produced. So finding good sources isn't a problem.

So my question is: Is that not kosher to just up and re-do a page? I'm new to Wikipedia so I don't want to have poor user etiquette. What's the best approach in this situation? There is a Record Production Project sub-project within the Music Project, but it looks like it hasn't been active since 2012. Otherwise I would reach out to the Record Production Project group about it, but I don't anticipate anyone would see me since the Record Production Project hasn't been active over the past 10 years.

Cheers Groovymama (talk) 20:28, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Groovymama: Eh, this isn't a case of WP:TNT, so it's better to try to improve it. This isn't a super long and established article, but it does have a history dating back to 2013 that involves multiple editors who put time and effort into it. I'd encourage you to salvage as much as you can from the existing article and incorporate/rephrase that into a "new" version, taking care to not omit any sourced information that is already present. You'll probably find it less time-consuming that way.  Ganbaruby! (talk) 20:58, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ganbaruby: Thanks for the guidance! I'm confused by what Authority Control means. This article says Autority Control MusicBrainz, could you help me understand what that's all about? When I clicked the Authority Control link it didn't really make since to me in this context. Cheers
Groovymama You don't need to worry about the Authority Control: just edit the main part of the article. As the help at H:AC describes, these just ensure that the article's title is integrated into various external library catalogues. Whatever you wish to improve in the article won't alter this. Recovering my old Wiki account - no email attached

Hi friends, not 100% sure if this is the right place to post (been a few months since I was active on Wikipedia!) I was locked out of my previous wiki account PotentPotables after having to reinstall Windows on my computer and losing the passwords...

I've tried the standard password reset stuff, but apparently I didn't attach an email account to it when I created it several years ago... I have used an email account through the Wikipedia Library and also through Wikipedia Asian Month, so was wondering if there was a way for the email address to be confirmed and linked to that account through those, so that I can continue editing under my old username.

Many thanks,

The user formerly known as PotentPotables 84.69.73.246 (talk) 00:50, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't know the password, and there is no email, then there is nothing that can be done. You will need to create a new account. You can mention on the user page that you previously edited under the old username. RudolfRed (talk) 01:43, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well there is an email, it's just not directly connected. I've used it for the Wikipedia Library before, and it still is connected through that. 84.69.73.246 (talk) 01:55, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am afraid that unless the email account was directly attached to Wikipedia, there is nothing that we can do here at the Teahouse. I've looked it up, the account PotentPotables currently doesn't has an email adress in the corresponding database field, which means there is nothing to send a reset password to as far as the reset password functionality goes. Wth regards to confirming the email adress via Wikipedia library, I doubt this will be done. Since The Wikipedia Library uses a seperate database from the main MediaWiki installations that pwoer Wikipedia, this means that in order to do a password reset, the email adress has to be manually inserted & confirmed in the databases behind Wikipedia by one of the few system administrators. I don't know wether inquiring them in this case would be sucessfull, though. Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:17, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@IcyTheApple: Welcome to the Teahouse! Presuming you're referring to external links (i.e. links to other websites), you can add {{dead link}} if you don't want to fix it yourself. Another editor may be able to fix the link or find an archived version. Thanks for asking, and happy editing! UserNruasPaoYPP/sandbox/Draft: ChongBlia Yang

Hello,

Could you help me to understand what reviewer is saying please? Below is what "reviewer" left for me. The proposed article does not have sufficient content to require an article of its own, but it could be merged into the existing article at Draft:ChongBlia Yang. Since anyone can edit Wikipedia, you are welcome to add that information yourself. Thank you.

Here is my Draft:ChongBlia Yang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:NruasPaoYPP/sandbox

My wish is to get the Draft:ChongBlia Yang accepted in Wikipedia as a standalone page such as any others. From there, I can use it and link it to my previous article which is "Ban Phou Pheung Noi" and to any other pages if I want.

What reviewer wants to say by this " but it could be merged into the existing article at Draft:ChongBlia Yang"? Please help me to understand what it means and what I can do to "merge into the existing article at Draft:ChongBlia Yang. Should I have to find and edit sufficient content into the article before?

Thank you, I appreciate it.2601:448:8400:7E80:0:0:0:C327 (talk) 16:07, 18 December 2021 (UTC) 2601:448:8400:7E80:0:0:0:C327 (talk) 16:07, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Teahouse. What that means is there is already a draft that existed before yours, and it would be better to add information to that draft instead of continuing with yours; Wikipedia is a collaborative project, after all. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:05, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, IP user (are you NruasPaoYPP? If so, please remember to login!). NruasPaoYPP seems to have made two separate attempt to create drafts of this article, first at User:NruasPaoYPP/sandbox in April, and then at Draft:ChongBlia Yang in October. They (you?) submitted the sandbox for review, and the reviewer found that there was also a draft and suggested merging them, as review will not usually go ahead if there are two separate drafts of the same article. Either merge them together, or (if you think there is nothing in the Draft: that needs saving, then because NruasPaoYPP is the only substantial contributor to Draft:Chongblia Yang, they may request its deletion by pasting {{db-author}} at the top.
But I'll tell you that neither version has any chance of being accepted at present, because neither of them has a source for anything whatever about ChongBlia Yang. I don't know whether or not The Joshua Project counts as a reliable source, but this is irrelevant, because nothing cited has substantial coverage of Chongblia Yang, and without that, neither draft does anything to establish that he meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability. For pretty well all the information in the draft, yYou need to say which reliably published source, wholly unconnected with ChongBlia Yang, contains that information: see your first article and referencing for beginners. --ColinFine (talk) 17:19, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Correction - I had the capitalisation wrong in the name of the draft: it's Draft:ChongBlia Yang. I see you have had your sandbox deleted. Well done. --ColinFine (talk) 22:29, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to challenge notability, even request deletion of article [matter closed, can be archived]

See Russian stove. I see absolutely nothing uniquely Russian about it. Either this claim is made up by Soviet/Russian propaganda, or the article doesn't manage to offer any proof. Good enough as a regional expression of a European (if not wider), certainly at least East European, type of stove, but more? Judging by the current "references" there, I can declare my grandpa's stove a unique creation and start a Wiki article based on his autobiography. Thank you for helping out in taking down a fishy statue, this time in the East for a change. Arminden (talk) 21:32, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Arminden, hello and welcome to the Teahouse, I believe it would be premature of me or any host to give you an answer to your question without first pointing you to WP:TE. If you can confirm that you have read and internalized that please indicate, and I’d answer your question. Celestina007 (talk) 22:12, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Celestina007, hi and thanks. I know very well what you're hinting at, I could have been less sarcastic. Beyond that: I'm dead serious. Nothing in that article is convincing, there is not one reliable source I can see, the editors didn't even know that they should at least translate the titles from Russian (or they couldn't be bothered), most references look like homey Russian websites and general-interest books. I know how cheap, persistent, East European propaganda works, and this totally walks and quacks in loud Prop-speak. Russians have excellent ethnographers and foreign specialists have also studied Russian material culture in depth - there's not a single trace of any of that in the whole article. "Sub-standard" does not even come close. So please, if you can wake them up from their tundra dreams, go ahead and I'll move out of the way, because it seems that I might not be diplomatic enough. Thanks! Arminden (talk) 22:40, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You might like to consider requesting a merge of that article with Masonry heater. Physically they are a type of masonry stove, but the folklore aspect also looks like it is worth preserving.--Gronk Oz (talk) 23:27, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I checked on Google Books and there are over 200 English-language books that talk about Russian stoves, so they seem to be a big deal. I glanced at some of the book previews and learned that since Russia has such dangerously cold winters (Siberia is in Russia) the Russians have always needed good stoves. I will leave it up to others to decide if the article should be deleted, or merged with the one on masonry heaters. Karenthewriter (talk) 00:17, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Uniquely Russian, big deal in Russia: The article itself mentions Belarus and Ukraine. The days of strictly Russian hegemony are over. Also, Transylvania and other parts of Romania also have harsh winters, and it appears to me that the exactly same type of masonry stove is used there as well (Transylvanian Romanians were mainly under Hungarian & Transylvanian Saxon cultural influence, not Russian one, practically no chance they adopted it from the east).
Always needed good stoves: The article itself mentions that this type "first appeared in the 15th century". So they managed without for half a millennium after the establishment of the Kievan Rus'.
Siberia is in Russia: The Russian Empire only started having any kind of presence in Siberia in the 16th, and took over the territory by the mid-17th century. So the stove had already appeared in Russia long before Russian merchants even set foot in Siberia. But it's cold enough also west of the Urals.
As you can see, unless you look beyond the surface, you cannot judge the merit or lack thereof of this stitched-up article. Support the claims with RS, and it's good enough for a merger where it can have its own section. As it stands now, it's a joke.
I opened the very first Google hit for Romanian stove and you should take a look too, here. Search for "casă românească tradițională" and tell me how that stove is different from the one in the Russian stove article. You'll find there lots of ancient and early modern masonry stoves from Italy and lots of other places. Or look here. To have an encyclopedia article, the Russian contributors have the duty to show how the Russian one is different, its history (they didn't discover the wheel, nor the masonry stove), and only then to offer folklore and anecdotes. Substance, i.e. a definition and history first, and only then the stretched sauce. We all love our motherland. Arminden (talk) 01:11, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Arminden, I'm going to suggest you find a better use of your time. I suggest helping to build an encyclopedia. Challenging this topic's notability or nominating the article for deletion is not going to succeed. The article is adequately cited (more than enough to pass AFD), and there's an extensive article on the subject on RU-wiki. Please do not continue to waste other editors' time here at the Teahouse. Softlavender (talk) 02:11, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Softlavender, and I suggest you check your language. I came here for advice. If the advice is to drop it, consider it done. I've done more than my fair share in "building an encyclopedia". It's precisely the reason why I found the "Russian stove" junk, as it is now, a disgrace for enWiki. It's your choice what you read and answer to or not. You are a waste of my time now, so go waste someone else's if you don't understand what I'm unhappy about with this pseudo-article, and while doing that, try not to pull down the quality of this project.

Talk page warnings

Today I found myself with warnings that I believe I might not deserve. While I wait for a response from the editor who placed the warnings, I'll go back to the edits themselves:

The first edit I get why now. The content in question probably was unneeded for the article and would belong in another. However, it can be disregarded as that was a different matter and a different editor.

The second was regarding this edit, where I added a template saying that the WP:TIME shortcut redirected somewhere and the Time WikiProject was somewhere else. The link was correct, but WP:Time, an alternative capitalization, had the alternate target.

The last regarded these three edits, which is in question. It's an essay, but I got a TPV warning for it. Not sure how.

If anyone is willing to clarify anything, let me know. I'll be watching this page for the next few days waiting for responses. 172.112.210.32 (talk) 22:43, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewers accept or decline (or reject) drafts. AfC reviewers must have:

  • a Wikipedia account at least 90 days old.
  • a minimum of 500 undeleted edits to articles (this is not the same as total number of edits).
  • thoroughly read and understood the reviewing instructions.
  • a demonstrated understanding of the policies and guidelines mentioned in the reviewing instructions, including the various notability guidelines.
  • reasonable evidence of understanding the deletion policy (experience in areas such as CSD/AfD/PROD or page curation, while not mandatory, are beneficial).
  • a willingness and ability to respond in a timely manner to questions about their reviews

Given that you have more than once created an article that an editor then turned into a draft, my opinion is that you do not yet have the experience and understanding to be an AfC reviewer. David notMD (talk) 11:28, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Motlatlaneo: only administrators can protect pages. You asked about these things in October. Here are the answers you received then – please click that link and read the responses. --bonadea contributions talk 08:48, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bonadea: My guess is that they did; they presently have a little over 500 edits (which is 500 more than they had when they last asked in October).
@Motlatlaneo: Bluntly speaking, people at WP:Requests for adminship are looking for evidence of extensive experience with Wikipedia and its policies, moreso than what a reviewer is expected to know and in a lot more areas of Wikipedia maintenance and governance besides. They also don't like it when it looks like someone seems to be intentionally fishing for userrights, as the administrator toolset is very much prone to abuse in the wrong hands and there's no realistic way short of the Arbitration Committee to strip admin rights from a rogue/malicious administrator. I leave off with a question of my own: Why, exactly, are you so desperate to become an admin? —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 10:44, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to report a page or user?

Was trying to read up on the Japanese gyaru subculture, but the page is an absolute mess. It seems to have been largely written by a non-native English speaker, but aside from that, there seems to be far too much detail--including a lot of irrelevant info--and some of the information is just subjective opinions on the subculture.

I've never edited a Wikipedia article and know nothing about gyaru (ergo why I was reading the article in the first place, haha) so I doubt I'm the right person to fix it, is there anything I can do to bring up the issue to someone who is? 104.188.120.175 (talk) 03:13, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

All articles have talk pages that you can use to discuss how to improve the article (in this case, Talk:Gyaru). If you don't get much responce there, I'd drop a note at WT:WikiProject Japan. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 03:56, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I am having trouble understanding copyright. Is there a cheatsheet anywhere to assist? I have read all the policies, but if there is a simple table or guide that would be great. @Such-change47: Copyright of what? Text on Wikipedia? Text in a book? Images at Commons? Images somewhere on the Internet? Could you be a little more specific about what you're having trouble with?  Ganbaruby! (talk) 05:09, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ganbaruby: you are right, my question was unhelpfully vague. I'll give an example. On the wikipedia article Mark Valera, I am trying to improve it I want to add some photos. His crimes were widely televised, with many tv stations broadcasting his image, and snapshots from his police interviews used. If you google his name, many of these images are used by different news sites. There is no way the news sites themselves could own the copyright. If the images are so widely used like this, are they public domain? I wish there was a way for me to check a specific image so I could see if it is allowed on Wikipedia. Are non-free images ever allowed up? I read that policy and the answer seems to be 'sometimes' but I am scared of uploading anything out of fear of a warning for copyright breach, so want to learn before I try anything - Such-change47 (talk) 05:15, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
also if something has this creative commons link does that mean it is okay to use on wikipedia? Such-change47 (talk) 05:18, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Such-change47: Ah ok. You cannot automatically assume that an image is public domain just because it's widely published; rather, you have to make sure that the original entity that first published the image published it under a free license. Whether or not mugshots are public domain fall under a very big "it depends": I know that if it was produced by the US federal government then it is, but since we're dealing with an Aussie here I'm not sure how it works. WP:ICT/FL shows the different licenses that Wikipedia considers "free enough"; note that not all types of Creative Commons licenses are ok (for example, CC BY-NC-ND is not compatible). Additionally, there is this "bypass" known as fair use, but you must demonstrate that the image has "no free equivalent" (mugshots could possibly be ok, but I'm not sure). Remember that if you are not certain that an image is free, don't upload it, it's not the end of the world. I suggest going to Wikipedia:Media copyright questions and asking about the specific image you're trying to upload.  Ganbaruby! (talk) 05:35, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Such-change47 the major reason for copyrighting a photo is to make money, so its likely someone took a good photo of Mark Valera, and then licensed it out to various news sites, who paid a fee in order to use the photo. If a hundred places paid to use the same copyrighted photo, the photo still belongs to the copyright holder. As Ganbaruby advised you, if you're not 100% sure you are allowed to use a photo don't take chances. Karenthewriter (talk) 06:06, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
thanks all! Such-change47 (talk) 06:16, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Such-change47 A couple of other comments. WP:MUG specifically advises against using police mugshots in articles, one of the things that Ganbaruby wasn't sure about. Also, "fair use" pictures of living people are virtually never acceptable because someone could take an equivalent freely-licensed picture later. See WP:NFC#UUI. Note that detailed questions about copyright are better asked at Commons: see Commons:Village_pump/Copyright Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:28, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My page isn't published after 6 months

I can't figure out if my wikipedia page is published. It doesn't come up in a search so I think it isn't. How so I fix this? I hit the "publish" button 6 months ago. Can anybody help? Diannaippolito (talk) 06:54, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Diannaippolito Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. I think you are referring to your user page; user pages are not article space, and not searchable by search engines. It is "published" in that it exists, but it is not formally part of the encyclopedia. New users cannot directly create articles(but they can create user pages, which is probably why you did so) and need to use Articles for Creation to create and submit draft articles.
Be advised that, while not forbidden, autobiographical articles are highly discouraged, per the autobiography policy, in part because people naturally write favorably about themselves. To succeed in writing about yourself, you must set aside everything you know about yourself and all materials put out by you, and only write summarizing what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen to say about you. Please see Your First Article. 331dot (talk) 06:58, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

BLP of an Indian journalist

Hello everyone, First, I would like to THANK Liz for the introduction to the Teahouse. I have been trying to create a short BLP of a local journalist/editor. For references, I tried using the news pieces from The Statesman, ETV Bharat, IBG News, but it was not accepted. So, can anyone please guide me here? In a similar way, the BLP for Atanu Bhuyan, another local journalist from Assam,India was accepted. Looking forward, Best Regards, Rdfcvn (talk) 09:43, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Teahouse, Rdfcvn. Atanu Bhuyan probably isn't a good model for a new article as it predates the current article review system and is currently under threat of deletion. Draft:Rajdeep Bailung Baruah was deleted for being overly promotional, but looking at the deleted content, it doesn't strike me as too bad. Perhaps the deleting administrator Jpgordon could clarify? Cordless Larry (talk) 10:32, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Cordless Larry. I look forward to the help from Jpgordon. Best Regards, Rdfcvn (talk) 12:03, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That said, Rdfcvn, you also need to ensure that the draft demonstrates that the subject meets Wikipedia's notability requirements, otherwise it won't be accepted regardless of how neutrally it is written. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:23, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is this Non-admin closure correct?

Hi Everyone,

I marked this page for deletion via afd. One of its contributor User:Sasan mazloumi who closed this afd as speedy keep. I have a strong feeling of COI/un-disclosed paid. Need your honest reviews. Also look at the message that was posted on my talk page by creator of the article here.  DMySon (talk) 11:02, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DMySon: That was a bad close for several reasons. You clearly did not withdraw the nomination, so the rationale "nomination withdrawn" wasn't valid. The closer also removed several comments from the discussion, and they (the closer) had participated in the discussion. --bonadea contributions talk 11:08, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You Bonadea, Should i take this to administrator's attention? Or you can deal with it. DMySon (talk) 11:12, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll leave warning the editor who tried to close the discussion to an admin. I skipped CLOSECHALLENGE since it seemed to be an obviously improper NAC, but feel free to revert me if that was too bold. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:20, 19 December 2021 (UTC); [Note: Post edited by Marchjuly to strikethrough part about restoring the AfD discussion. @DMySon I have left an 'only warning' for the editor who attempted to interfere with the AfD process, and they will be probably be blocked if they attempt anything so daft again. Thanks, Nick Moyes (talk) 11:58, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You Nick. DMySon (talk) 12:02, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, Bonadea and I must have been trying to restore the discussion at the same time and they got to it first. So, technically, Bonadea is the one you should be thanking. If the same editor tries to close the discussion again, don't engage any edit warring over the close. Instead seek administrator assistance either via WP:CLOSECHALLENGE or at WP:AN. -- 11:34, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

Ahmed Al Harrasi, I'm not sure if you saw my answer at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1134#Hi my references are from authentic sources, but it is declined again!, but this is what I was trying to explain. It's not just about the use of secondary versus primary sources, but that large parts of the draft have no references at all. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:06, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Doing a link search, I find six instances of a domain (ocweb.org) that seems to have been taken over. It appears to have referred in the past to pages published by an organization in Israel. Now, it has no content other than a list of links to "best deal on this" and "best deal on that". It's obviously been taken over. So, how best to edit the pages containing these links in respect to two considerations:

  1. the domain may have been legitimately transferred, and has a new master
  2. the domain my have been fraudulently taken over, and may return to the control of its rightful master
  1. I want to find the link to the original content
  2. I can't be bothered to do that, and just want to remove the incorrect link

Thanks.  signed, Willondon (talk) 14:24, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Willondon. How this is dealt with often depends upon whether the link in question was added as a citation or as an external link. For the former, please take a look at WP:DEADREF; for the latter, please take a look at WP:ELDEAD. Generally, citations aren't necessarily removed simply because a link goes dead; often there are archived versions of the source that can either be found online or offine. Since sources cited as references aren't required to be available online, they don't automatically lose their value when they can no longer be accessed online. With respect to external links, archived versions can sometimes be found, but often the links are removed when there's no chance at all of an archived version being found since their value is largely based upon their being accessible online in some form. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:34, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Since three members had the same name (father, son and grandson), today I tried to fix the links in the list of House of Burgesses members. I suspect that yesterday I initially mistakenly clicked on the link for "John Curtis", who represented Lancaster County of the Northern Neck Region in the 1660 assembly, and who does not yet have an article. Want to host a bio page for an artist, with pictures.

Pictures and social media handles are the absolute last things you should concern yourself about. Sources are king. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 22:40, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Aajayi27, and welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid that your wording suggests that, like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is. You cannot "host a bio page" at Wikipedia, for anybody. What you can do, if the person meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, is to write an encyclopaedia article about an artist. This article will not belong to the artist, will not be controlled by the artist, may end up with contents that the artist does not like, and should be based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with the artist have chosen to publish about the artist in reliable sources, not on what the artist or their associates say or want to say. Please read what Wikipedia is not and your first article. If you have a connection with the artist, please also read about conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 22:53, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Aajayi27: Hi there! WP:AUTO explains that Wikipedia strongly discourages autobiographies. Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, you could view Help:Introduction and The Wikipedia Adventure. I suggest then spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of you (as Jéské Couriano stated above), and determine whether you meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you would first declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article (as Celestina007 kindly stated above), and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. GoingBatty (talk) 22:56, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what to make of this situation

I really don't know what to make of this, but I ran across a user 'Slurponmybigkurac12'. They made some edits (apparently personal attacks in Serbian) to other users' talk pages, so I reverted and warned them and left a note on the targeted editors' talk page saying that it was vandalized and it was reverted (so they don't get an OBOD and don't know where it came from).

Then, this user came to my talk page to say they were having a hard time in real life (appeal to pity?), apologize, and call me a 'bitch'.

I also checked their edit filter log, and it was kind of alarming. I saw 'persistent sockpuppetry', 'common vandal phrases', 'LTA 1053', and 'vandalism in all caps'.

Now, they're coming back to have a converation with me.

Are they acting in good faith or bad faith? What do I do? --67.183.136.85 (talk) 23:37, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you'd prefer me to hide it permanently from view, please just let me know on my userpage, as I am an administrator here, and won't tolerate that kind of interaction with female editors if it makes them uncomfortable in any way. What constitutes an "edit war"?

@100.36.227.237: three, in most cases. You can see the three-revert rule policy. However, in some cases, there are additional restrictions that either only allow one revert, or even prohibit reverts. Reverts of obvious vandalism (meaning that it's vandalism and no good-faith editor will say it's not vandalism) are exempted from this rule. --67.183.136.85 (talk) 03:27, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense. Would good-faith vandalism count as vandalism? 100.36.227.237 (talk) 03:45, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There is no such thing as "good faith vandalism". Vandalism is bad faith.
Normally, 4 reverts is an edit war (because 3RR allows 3) but you can also edit war without violating 3RR.AssumeGoodWraith (talk | contribs) 04:29, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much. I've now understood how to reply a message. Crewpostor (talk) 07:41, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Crewpostor, about discussing on WP talkpages. If you go here : Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and enable a thingie called "Discussion tools", you will get a "reply" link at the end of each comment, and using that both indents correctly and signs. There's also a button (little guy with a +) for easy WP:PINGing. There may be other stuff in the preferences you like. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:45, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yash Dhull India under 19 Cricket captain

As I mentioned up in heading, is the subject is notable for WP article, today Board of Control for Cricket In India announced him captain for West Indies world cup. If Draft: Yash Dhull is eligible, how I can create a article? Source article - https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/who-is-yash-dhull-captain-of-the-india-under-19-world-cup-team-101639976098895.html, I manufactured Draft : Yash Dhull article in my WP: Holland Tok/sandbox how to publish it guide, I tried to AFC submit but it didn't work.  Holland Tok (talk) 07:10, 20 December 2021 (UTC) Few moments before I found that someone already tried to manufacture a draft about Yash Dhull, but he didn't submitted it, my article also have same title, but my article is well written and is read to be live, You can check my article on my sandbox.Holland Tok (talk) 08:14, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Being a U## squad captain still does not confer notability, as U## games are not considered professional or anywhere near it as far as most sports-specific notability guidelines go, WP:NCRICKET included. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 08:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jéské Couriano: you can check the article on User:Holland Tok/sandbox, the subject have many articles on Indian news webs and to resolve this conflict, a article - Draft: Yash Dhull already is in draft space, which is not good.Holland Tok (talk) 08:34, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jéské Couriano: you said this subject is may not notable, then why already a article about this subjects teammate is live, take a look Rajvardhan Hangargekar, fellow U## players from other nations, who have articles - Rakibul Hasan of Bangladesh, Gulshan Jha of a small nation Nepal. I think rule is equal for every article.Holland Tok (talk) 08:45, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:GNG Yash Dhull have significant coverage.Holland Tok (talk) 08:50, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Diffs

How can I generate a Special:Diff instead of a normal diff? ― ItcouldbepossibleTalk 07:32, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Itcouldbepossible: Diffs are "hosted" on Special:Diff, "Special:" indicating it is a special page. – AssumeGoodWraith (talk | contribs) 07:38, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AssumeGoodWraith Thanks...but how do I find the revision id of a page? ― ItcouldbepossibleTalk 08:10, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible: You find it by clicking on a diff and looking at the url. Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=913873043. – AssumeGoodWraith (talk | contribs) 08:30, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Idea for new article - looking for feedback first

The Australian rock band The Angels has among its members two brothers - John and Rick (Richard). John has his own article, but for some reason Rick does not. From the references on John's article, they seem to be collaborators on many of the songs, and both John and Rick have been inducted into the ARIA hall of fame.

Collaborators:

Hall of fame:

There are a few Rick-specific links:

Looking for feedback before I consider creating an article for Richard. peterl (talk) 08:09, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Peterl: WP editors don't call them page, they call it article.

Revision request on edited page

Hi, I would like to correct and add or remove any part of a page which I edited if it's needed.i appreciate if anyone can help me. thank you https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:English_Wikipedia&oldid=prev&diff=1060781802 Bahram2010 (talk) 09:57, 20 December 2021 (UTC) https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:English_Wikipedia&oldid=prev&diff=1060781802[reply]

Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. You edited Talk:English Wikipedia, which exists to discuss improvements to the english Wikipedia article on the english Wikipedia. Given that Draft:UArchitects exists and has been rejected, I am afraid that this is a lost cause. Victor Schmidt (talk) 10:30, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How signatures are changed?

 Firebanana (talk) 10:46, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Firebanana: Welcome to the Teahouse. From the look of your userpage, it seems you've already found the answer to this question yourself. (That often the best way to learn). But see WP:SIGNATURE if in doubt. By the way, please avoid bright yellow in your signature as it is extremely hard for people to discern against the standard white background. Not everyone here has the perfect vision of youth! NM Demo (talk) 11:41, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
NM Demo, how's the signature now? Is it good?  Fire  banana  12:01, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Firebanana: Bright, and a lot more legible! It certainly sums up your username. NM Demo (talk) 12:06, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
NM Demo, thank you so much!  Fire  banana  12:11, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I find it confusing. Your User name is Firebanana. With your new signature, "Fire" goes to your User page and "banana" goes to your Talk page. I suggest Firebanana go to your User page and a simple "(talk)" go to your Talk. David notMD (talk) 12:49, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What to do if editing a page gets a bit stuck as wikipedians simply don't have the time to help?

Hi there. I am relatively new to Wikipedia - I am trying to make edits to the Soil Association page but keep getting stuck as Wikipedians don't have the time/resource to review proposed edits. I totally understand the reason for this by the way, so it is not intended as a criticism of the editors! My question is though, without the help of Wikipedians generously donating their time, how can I proceed with making edits to a page which currently is not fit for purpose! My draft is in my sandbox DanMor0806/sandbox and all with independent citations.

I have declared my COI on this page as an employee of the Soil Association - with this in mind, I am trying to guide the process of updating the page, whilst ensuring I stick to the rules so that my bias doesn't result in a biased page! Thanks in advance for any advice. DanMor0806 (talk) 12:39, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nope. Given that PAID applies, and that several edits you made directly to Soil Association were reverted, you are limited to proposing changes on the Talk page of the article. Which you are doing. David notMD (talk) 12:54, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
331dot (talk) Thank you for the advice. If I do this in the talk page as individual edits with a edit request tag at the end of each one will that suffice? I don't want to annoy editors by asking for a large amount of individual edits. There is a lot that needs adding to the page. DanMor0806 (talk) 14:09, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DanMor0806 Yyou are correct that a large number of individual requests might not be desirable, but a single large request is the same. I might pursue a middle path, maybe make an edit request with a small number of changes, then if that is accepted do another with a few more, and so on, I'd wait for one request to be accepted before doing others so that you know what is being looked for before you write several requests. 331dot (talk) 14:13, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
331dot (talk) Thank you very much for your help. All understood - will try my first one now! Appreciate your time. DanMor0806 (talk) 14:17, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a Wiki user who understands science

I really didn't know where else to ask this effectively... I am looking for a Wikipedia editor who can spend some time, if they are interested of course, on the BLP of a scientist, specifically only the section related to his scientific career —M. S. Swaminathan— he is the first World Food Prize laureate. Science related to wheat, rice, potato, radiation, botany, plant genetics, agricultural science etc. I have spent some time recently updating other non-science parts of the BLP. crossed fingers DTM (talk) 13:24, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@DiplomatTesterMan You can also put up this request in the Indian Wikiproject or also in the Science Wikiproject. ― ItcouldbepossibleTalk 13:52, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the idea. I had tried categories for Wikipedia users who are botanists....... I will try with the over-arching science project as well. Thanks! :) DTM (talk) 14:15, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can you edit Wikipedia without having an account?

 82.132.245.231 (talk) 14:05, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. You absolutely can do so, though there are benefits with having an account, such as your IP being hidden. Many users, however, never create an account and have participated here for years. You are welcome to be among them. 331dot (talk) 14:10, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
