Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself

Main page: WP:Find your source

• Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email.
• Check what sources are available to you in The Wikipedia Library – editors active for at least six months with over 500 edits, at least 10 of them in the last month, and with no active blocks have immediate access to the Wikipedia Library Bundle.
  • Available databases in the bundle include: Gale, EBSCO, JSTOR, Oxford and ProQuest
• Consider applying for access to additional Wikipedia Library sources at The Wikipedia Library Card Platform.
  • Additional databases include: Newspapers.com, NewspaperARCHIVE.com, Project MUSE, Taylor & Francis and much more.
• Search for periodical titles in the Wikipedia Library database index at The Wikipedia Library/A–Z.
• Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription.
• Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories.
• Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni, if applicable.
• If the article is paywalled, a browser extension may bypass the paywall. Try Unpaywall for academic journals or Bypass Paywalls Clean (Firefox, Chrome) for news websites.

Note that sites like Library Genesis (LibGen) and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.

Making a request

• A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work.
• All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
• We cannot perform full book copy requests due to copyright. Please ask for specific pages that relate to the article(s) you need them for.
• You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page.
• To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences.
• Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc.
• Indicate which Wikipedia articles are being improved.
• Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
• Filled requests are archived.
• Requests unfilled after three months will be archived.

Fulfilling a request

• Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
• Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
• Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}.
• You can:
  • point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... )
  • share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal
  • upload out of copyright works to Wikimedia Commons and/ or Wikisource (but be careful that this does not breach your own institution's policies)
  • email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

• Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
• Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
• Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
• Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

Locus magazine back issues

Locus magazine, issues 409, 421, 432, 434, and 435, from the mid-1990s. Looking for reviews of The Farseer Trilogy, which are listed in each of these. Canadian TV ratings data (specifically 1987-1992)

Sorry if this seems like an odd request because I'm not looking for one specific work/journal. I was directed here by someone else. I'm in a so far eighteen-month long process of improving the coverage of the Degrassi teen drama franchise, specifically to do with the 80s/90s versions of the franchise, which aired on CBC. I'm specifically looking for any Canadian ratings data between 1987 and 1992 if any exists to cite the same way pages about American shows cite Nielsen ratings. Various newspapers of the time claim the show averaged over a million followers weekly, and I'm looking for exact figures to add for each episode to support this instead of going off estimates. A slight challenge here on The Battle of Britain 2, in that the publisher of the game posted reviews on their website, and listed the name of the publication but not the date or other information. So what I am asking for here, is if anyone is able to locate originals of these reviews, can you just please provide the citation for me so that I can reasonably include these reviews in the article?

There is an offline source cited on his nl.wiki article that would show likely he was an MP. The source is The Belgian Parliament, 1894-1972 by Paul van Molle, and while I cannot find a GBooks page, there is this brief description.

Alright, here is where I am at. My librarian has submitted three of the requests. One was to the Library of Congress, who I am told will not respond for a while. There are no lenders for the PSExtreme article; I can't help you there. For PC Power and CD-ROM Games, my librarian says that they will need to ask lenders outside the United States and that they "will take extra time to fill" but that she can pursue it "if these articles are important for your research." I cannot provide an explanation, as I can't see the book, nor do I live in a place that has a library facility. Whatever page it appears on, I need the context for the discussion on Ivanitzky. @SusunW and Doc Taxon: Les portulans grecs II does not contain any mentions of Ivanitzky. Why does a Google search say it does, on a page 100 that it doesn't have? Most likely, Google scanned multiple works into a single file, then attached the metadata of just the first work to the file. What is the work that actually contains the information about Ivanitzky?

You can ask Google by starting from the link you gave above, and clicking the link "Where's the rest of this book?" Then, in the "Report problems" section, click "contact us". Then click the radio button "I have a question or feedback about a book". Describe the symptoms and they will examine the file and correct the metadata (maybe even split the file into multiple works).

Most likely you want Frost, Henry H. (1960). The functional sociology of Emile Waxweiler. Mémoires. Vol. LIII(5). Brussels: Académie royale des sciences, des lettres et des beaux-arts de Belgique. pp. 99-101 (or whatever pages mention Ivanitzky). OCLC 4790370. I say that because Les Portulans Grecs II is Mémoires volume LIII(1), and Nadine Ivanitzky wrote about Emile Waxweiler in 1917. Frost likely cites Ivanitzky and/or discusses her work. I sent an e-mail to google books with a copy of the link saying "The snippet says the book contains information on Nadine Ivanitzky on page 100, but also states that there are only 83 pages in the book. An interlibrary loan of "Les portulans grecs", volume II, confirms Ivanitzky is not listed in the book. Can you please advise where the information on Ivanitzky which shows in the link (gave link) is derived and how I can access same?" To which they replied. Requesting a primary source relevant to Indian Nationalist Leader Subash Chandra Bose's antisemetic legacy

ISBN 978-1-4411-8898-4 (Israel and the European Left-Between Solidarity and Delegitimization) is one of the sources given on this article giving credence to his anti-semetic legacy. I found it very interesting but could not find any available ways of reviewing it online, and no library near me contains it as well.
