Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sports

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by TPTB (talk | contribs) at 13:19, 7 June 2024 (Listing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/FCSB.). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

The result was Speedy/procedural keep - this relates to longstanding conflict/disruption related to the history/legacy of the famous Romanian football team 'Steaua București', with two clubs (FCSB and CSA Steaua București) both claiming the heritage. AFD is totally the wrong venue to deal with any perceived issues related to this, FSCB is clearly notable.‎. GiantSnowman 12:58, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FCSB

The information presented here is mostly false. The date the club was founded is wrong, the records are wrong, the history is wrong, former players are wrong, about 80% of the entire article is wrong.

If you go to the club's own website, you find nothing about the information presented here. It says here that Fcsb has 27 domestic titles. When its chairman of the board was asked if this is true, he denied it. https://as.ro/fotbal/liga-1/mihai-stoica-explicatie-total-neasteptata-motivul-pentru-care-numarul-27-va-fi-trecut-pe-tricourile-campioanei-fcsb-398416.html So why keep this article? It makes no sense. Just because there is some wrong information posted on some website? That is the same as fake news. Does Wikipedia support fake news now? TPTB (talk) 13:19, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment AfD is not for debating the content. It is to establish WP:notabilty and appropriate WP inclusion/exclusion. Please feel free to correct the info with WP:reliable sources or reframe the AfD proposal. If the sources are geniune and reliable, btw we might need a conversation about how to use them.

Comment: this is an invalid and arguably malicious nomination. As can be seen on the talk pages of this article and various others on related entities, there is a long-running legal dispute. The nom is likely to be proved correct that FCSB will be disassociated from most if not all of the historic achievements of the Steaua Bucharest club in due course, but AFAIK this is not definitive at present in terms of reliable sources stating exactly what can be allocated to whom. Regardless, the FCSB entity is an extant sports club (and won the Romanian championship this season just gone) so is unequivocally a valid topic for an article, and would be still valid as a topic as a means of clarification on the events of the past years even if it were dissolved altogether tomorrow. The nom has seemingly lost their patience in this matter and now simply wants to have all the information deleted rather than have contentious information removed by the proper means and processes. Fails WP:GNG: references are all database or WP:ROUTINE coverage by non-independent sources (e.g. the league, the clubs within it, and the online database where scores are entered. This also fails any reasonable 'pub test' of notability: it's a routine season article for a league which itself has no article and – as the reserves league for an already fairly minor competition – would also fail GNG. Aspirex (talk) 07:25, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment What if it was merged into 2011 NEAFL season (with a lot of info taken out)? When the VFA/L reserves existed, for instance, those results were referenced on the main senior season page. These were reserves for 7/17 NEAFL clubs that season Totallynotarandomalt69 (talk) 09:14, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:LISTN is not met here due to a lack of coverage of the subjects as a group. As it stands, this is an indiscriminate list of mostly non-notable people. Let'srun (talk) 03:28, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yet this list only includes a self-selected number of players, many of whom have no article themselves, and has no sources discussing these players as a group. In my opinion, it is much more appropriate to have a category for the notable players who played here. Let'srun (talk) 17:45, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails both WP:GNG and WP:SPORTBASIC, prong 5. I created this stub in July 2020, when playing in the NFL created a presumption of notability. (Mehelich appeared in eight games as a guard for the Red Jackets in 1929.) Under current guidelines, there is no longer a presumption. I have searched extensively for WP:SIGCOV and came up empty. Article unconditionally and utterly fails WP:SPORTBASIC, prong 5 ("Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources." Article has been tagged for 18 months due to this deficiency and still no SIGCOV. Preferred result is redirect to List of players who appeared in only one game in the NFL (1920–1929)#1923 but my efforts to do that have twice been reverted (in 2022 by User:BeanieFan11 and in 2024 by User:Let'srun). Cbl62 (talk) 18:17, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've thought this through and I'm not convinced that the proffered sources satisfy GNG. The whole basis for his claim to notablity is that he played one game for the Louisville Brecks in 1923. Only two of the sources touch briefly on his pro "career", namely this one, and both simply announce that Quast signed with the Brecks -- with no depth whatsoever. And the obit in the Courier Journal (here) doesn't even mention his one-game NFL "career" -- if his one game with the Brecks wasn't even significant enough to merit even a brief mention in his obituary, how in the world can we then claim that it is notable enough to be the basis of an encyclopedia article?? The only source is from the team website, which is primary. A check of newspaper archives didn't come up with much better, with only a single sentence of coverage found at [[19]]. No indication this team, which only played a single game, meets the WP:NSEASONS or WP:GNG. The only source in the article gives this team merely a brief mention, and a cursory search didn't come up with anything better. Let'srun (talk) 01:50, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Topic is not notable enough for a standalone article, fails WP:NLIST and WP:NOTDIRECTORY. This is a list of records for loosely-related college football team seasons. These teams are "independent" and do not belong to conferences, only joined together because they are in a division of college football together. The text in many of these templates also show up as wikitext because of improper code writing. This list was also created as a way to try avoiding deletion of the individual templates at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2024 June 13#Template:2023 NCAA Division III independents football records. Repeating my reasoning from 2021, but WP:NBASE now no longer exists:

Not notable. I cannot locate stats or a roster spot for this person on seamheads.com or cnlbr.org or baseball-reference.com. (B-R "Bullpen" [an open wiki] has an article created at the same time and same person that created this article.) The given source is an obit [20] that vaguely refers to playing on a Negro league team at some time. The given team ceased play in 1951 when the subject was 20, but as I stated, I cannot find any other source backing this up. (This palyer should not be confused with Ernie Smith (baseball, born 1908), also a Negro leaguer.) -- BX (talk) 01:18, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete: The article's one source (an obituary of the kind likely provided by the family to a local paper) claims he played for the Baltimore Elite Giants. A separate article in the Bristol Herald-Courier on his receipt of an award puts dates on it: "After he graduated from high school in 1949, he played baseball with the Bishop Stateliners, the Amonata Slugger and the West Virginia All-Stars from 1949 to 1951. Then he played for the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro National League until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1953, where he also played shortstop for the 2nd Marine Division baseball team." However, this is not a possible sequence, since the Baltimore Elite Giants disbanded in 1950. So that casts doubt on the reliability of the source (and thus on the obituary) right there. I'm not finding any other sources that confer notability under WP:NSPORTS (either as a player or a coach), WP:NBIO or WP:GNG. Dclemens1971 (talk) 03:13, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Non-notable cricketer, who fails WP:NCRIC and WP:GNG. Article is just full of WP:REFBOMBS, with none of them contributing towards significant coverage about the player. That's what you can find at a simple search- [27] RoboCric Let's chat 10:11, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Curb Safe Charmer: Firstly, the mentioned player hasn't yet played in a global T20 WC qualifier. Secondly, WP:OFFCRIC just states that players participating in these matches may have sufficient coverage about them to justify an article, but it should not be assumed to exist without further proof. According to WP:NCRIC, as she has not played for a Test-playing nation, this criterion also fails. And the only other way is GNG, which is also not satisfied. RoboCric Let's chat 10:28, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shrug02 No, she has played in 2023 ICC Women's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier not the global qualifier. You first need to understand how a World Cup qualification works. Florrie Copley is notable as she is one of only 2 players to play in the inaugural women's inter-insular cup and Jersey's first women's T20 international (a match in which she top scored). She has played in a world cup qualifying tournament taking wickets in both matches she played in. This is all backed up by citations from the BBC and Jersey Evening Post among others. There is limited scoop for sources for Jersey and even more so for women's sport in Jersey. It is not like the USA or India where there are hundreds of media organisations. Florrie Copley is a notable figure for cricket and women's sport in general in Jersey and the wider Channel Islands. Shrug02 (talk) 11:14, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Khwezi Khoza

Khwezi Khoza (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

As Khoza is playing at school level only, WP:YOUNGATH applies. The guideline itself states that It especially excludes using game play summaries, statistical results, or routine interviews as sources to establish notability. and that players like Khoza can only be notable if they have received, as individuals, substantial and prolonged coverage that is: (1) independent of the subject; and (2) clearly goes beyond WP:ROUTINE coverage. COSAFA is the only source that is close to decent but even that doesn't seem to address Khoza in significant detail. CAF Online doesn't seem to mention Khoza at all. I found SS Schools and Windhoek Observer but even these are just mentions in a school tournament recap, so not enough to count as WP:SIGCOV. This was moved to mainspace from Draft:Khwezi Khoza prematurely. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 11:19, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My biggest concern is that a lot of these footballers are children (probably 14 or 15 years old) and it's just not appropriate for them to have an article here, even if the personal info is extremely limited. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 13:08, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Spiderone, I don't think their age is the problem. Ethan Mbappe was created when he was 13/14. This creators work lack WP:SIGCOV and he sometimes cite references that has absolutely nothing to do with the subject. dxneo (talk) 13:19, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. My guess would be that the article creator works closely with South African youth players, hence the influx of articles and, in some cases, original research. Unlike Ethan Mbappe, Khoza doesn't seem to be a public figure so I think that we can both agree that this article shouldn't be here. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 14:01, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree with you. This article and probably most if not all of the creator's work are not Wikipedia material. Therefore, I am leaning towards delete per nom and it's just TOOSOON. dxneo (talk) 14:18, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no WP:SIGCOV cited in the article and I found none in a search. WP:SPORTBASIC is very clear when stating that routine coverage in match reports is not enough for an article. (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

The article of this men's footballer has not received enough significant coverage to pass WP:GNG.

The only secondary source I could find is SME's sub-website My Nitra. It mentions Marek Švec scoring a goal in one paragraph after translation: "The oldest and the youngest players scored a valuable draw. Anton Sloboda was everywhere, and we could see the 34-year-old fighter passing between the stoppers in the back, serving teammates in the middle and setting up a goal for the teenager Marek Švec in the front. The academy graduate scored his third goal, no one under the age of 18 in the top 30 European leagues has scored more in a season... Wow! The youngest debutant in the history of FC ViOn will celebrate adulthood only on New Year's Eve and has already made 22 league starts with five goals." The coverage of Švec is written in bold, but something tells me that the rest are more of a trivial mention.

If this article gets deleted, we should consider moving "Marek Švec (wrestler)" to just "Marek Švec".

The article has no non-dead sources and searches for "Union Stadium south africa" return real information (i.e. not maps or directions). The only search results on JSTOR are a university paper in Wisconsin and a local paper in Ohio, both of which are hardly reliable sources for a stadium in South Africa. For this reason, I feel the article does not meet general notability guidelines. WikipediaNMP (talk) 09:17, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is a long-unsourced article of a football club that seems to have never played in the highest Slovak First Football League. I can't find any significant coverage of this club that meets WP:GNG. My Google searches, even with "site:.sk" next to the club's name, only come up with club's official website and match reports, the former of which is not independent. Corresponding article on Slovak Wikipedia has been tagged for notability issues for years, which certainly may not help copy over English article. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. • Weak keep per above. This is clearly not a hoax, and SportingFlyer makes a good point. It's weak, admittedly, but it's a keep for me right now. Anwegmann (talk) 01:21, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • The article is a hoax, because it conflates "national team" with "expat team", and relies on puffery from primary sources to the degree that it makes claims that are demonstrably false. Some actual organization may exist; but it is entirely "we let people put out press releases that pretense to importance which we do not have". Walsh90210 (talk) 02:03, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, a hoax is generally something that's completely fictional, whereas this is an actual organisation similar to ConIFA. SportingFlyer T·C 09:45, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't a "national football team". In an attempt to propose a move target, I determined that it should be deleted rather than renamed.

For the first match: some attendees at the 99º Universal Esperanto Congress had a friendly game of football during the event. [49]

The rest appears to be cosplay. Walsh90210 (talk) 18:48, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That is simply not true... it literally played in two non-FIFA organization tournaments (COSANFF Cup and Zamenhof Cup) among other games against teams in non-FIFA organizations (Mapuche etc), and on top of that it does meet WP:GNG by any means. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 04:31, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merge to World Esperanto Congress or Universal Esperanto Association. The subject is notable given the multiple reliable sources talking about it, but there's not much long-term coverage and not an enormous amount that needs to be said about it, so it fits better in context with other things the same people have been doing. Mrfoogles (talk) 21:52, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Third option could be Esperanto, maybe in the Culture section Mrfoogles (talk) 21:52, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Very weak keep only if the name is changed to "...football team" rather than "...national football team—It feels absurd to vote in favor of something this fluid, semi-official, and undefinable. We can't even figure out what to call it, much less exactly what it is. This is clearly not a national team, because Esperanto is a language, not a nation. It's also not a sub-nationality, ethnic identity, tribal affiliation, or diasporic community. I want to vote "Delete" so badly, but the sources are there to establish WP:SIGCOV, unfortunately. That said, this is a ridiculous article on a ridiculous subject that shouldn't really exist. But standards are standards, and this article meets those standards. Anwegmann (talk) 01:37, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - this article has been shown to meet GNG which no editor has refuted so should be kept. As it stands, there are one delete vote, one merge vote, and four keep votes. Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 05:35, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Having checked through per WP:BEFORE, significant coverages (WP:SIGCOV) are rather poor for most 2nd and below tier formula classes given the reason for this nominations. Sources consists of almost entirely of WP:PRIMARY. Additionally, Wikipedia is not a sportsheet for the most ardent of fans (WP:NOTSTATS), whom anything less than first tier formula classes appeals to. WP:AFD will be a redirect or merge to 2024 FIA Formula 3 Championship (edit) and 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship.

I am also nominating the following related pages for this same reason with more to be added in:

Formula One is the top tier of the sport and one of the (if not the single) most prestigious category in motorsport as a whole. The F1 equivalent pages to the ones included in this nomination, using this article as an example, contain little more additional information. Reading WP:NOTSTATS, the only thing these pages are missing is a little more summarised information. The nominated pages display the information in clear, concise tables and they provide information that is not available in the main season articles (2024 Formula 2 Championship and 2024 FIA Formula 3 Championship) and add context to the relevant motorsport championship.

Thank you for your response. In this case, "speedily delete" refers to speedy deletion, a separate, much quicker procedure which does not need a discussion to delete a page. This rugby article is not eligible to be deleted through that medium. • Keep There seem to be a few articles with more than trivial mention. Given the time period, I also suspect there may be additional sources out there that are not reflected by internet sources. At least weak support for keeping. – notwally (talk) 23:35, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Baffled at the assertions of SIGCOV here. The source linked above is 229 words, of which all but ~5 sentences are direct quotes. The remainder include a couple sentences summarizing what he says in a quote (not independent analysis) and/or relating "what he feels" (ditto), e.g. But after a lengthy time rehabilitating, Molloy is now over the worst of it. and The young forward is hoping to push on and make a big impression with the Giants. With last season almost being forgotten about, Molloy now can set out some targets to work towards – and again it may also involve going out on loan., both of which are immediately followed by more detailed quotes from him. Essentially the only secondary independent coverage is a single sentence mentioning he missed a season due to injury. Nowhere near IRS SIGCOV. This is also a British player from the 2010s, well into the internet news era in a country with highly accessible digital media, so I am very skeptical of claims that coverage exists offline somewhere. @Normanhunter2, which material do you believe is non-routine SIGCOV in IRS sources? JoelleJay (talk) 20:31, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My stance on the potential deletion of this article is that it should be retained, primarily due to the credibility of the 9 sources supporting it. These sources, I believe, are robust enough to establish the article's notability.
Some users here may have stronger opinions based on the WP:SIGCOV of this article, but I see potential for improvement. A 'weak keep' is possible for me because this is a notable topic, and there are likely more substantial sources waiting to be added to enhance the article. Redirect to List of Wakefield Trinity players. Lack of SIGCOV per JoelleJay’s source analysis. This is the better of the two proposed redirect targets as the subject played most of his career with this club. Frank Anchor 18:22, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Twinkle1990: - can I just point out NSPORT states that "Failing to meet the criteria in this guideline means that notability will need to be established in other ways (for example, the general notability guideline...) - so all NSPORT is saying that people who meet those criteria are considered notable, but not meeting those criteria doesn't automatically make them non-notable.

Non-notable cricketer, who fails WP:NCRIC and WP:GNG. Article is just full of WP:REFBOMBS, with none of them contributing towards significant coverage about the player. That's what you can find at a simple search- [66] RoboCric Let's chat 10:11, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With only database source listed, the article of this luger certainly fails WP:GNG. All that came up in my Google search were an interview and trivial mentions; no indication of independent fact checking. Corresponding Czech Wikipedia is an unsourced stub, which might help copy over English article otherwise. He was not even one of the top three luge winners at the 2010 Winter Olympics. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. From that website:

This may be an argument that this article is not bad enough to be speedily deleted; but that does not mean it should be kept.

So unless I misinterpreted which is possible, is there any rush to get this article removed? Why not improve it? Maurnxiao (talk) 19:48, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. In this case, "speedily delete" refers to speedy deletion, a separate, much quicker procedure which does not need a discussion to delete a page. This rugby article is not eligible to be deleted through that medium. However, in my opinion, the subject has not received significant coverage from reliable sources that cover him directly and in detail and thus might fail our general notability guidelines, which is why I brought it to a discussion. Keep per the excellent work sourcing done by @Clearfrienda. Also to directly rebut the nomination – school sports is actually very notable in the field of athletics, take a look at how often "U.S. high school" is covered by World Athletics here: "u.s. high school" site:worldathletics.org. The idea that children's athletes are automatically not notable is also not reflected anywhere in WP policy that I can tell – if the general notability guideline is met, an article can be written. --Habst (talk) 04:00, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Repeating my reasoning from 2021, but WP:NBASE now no longer exists:

Not notable. I cannot locate stats or a roster spot for this person on seamheads.com or cnlbr.org or baseball-reference.com. (B-R "Bullpen" [an open wiki] has an article created at the same time and same person that created this article.) The given source is an obit [89] that vaguely refers to playing on a Negro league team at some time. The given team ceased play in 1951 when the subject was 20, but as I stated, I cannot find any other source backing this up.

Fails WP:NSKATE; medal placement at the junior level or bronze/silver medals at the national championships do not meet the requirements of WP:NSKATE. Google search turns up nothing outside of wikis and scoring databases. Previous AFD received zero arguments in favor of keeping this article that cited any evidence of notability. Poorly sourced rugby BLP. All I found were transactional announcements (1, 2, 3) and a routine injury update (1). There seem to be multiple redirect candidates (List of Wakefield Trinity players, List of Salford Red Devils players). JTtheOG (talk) 19:40, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

• Redirect to List of Wakefield Trinity players: Thorough source analysis by JoelleJay removes the basis for standalone notability. Owen× 12:32, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Strong sources to support the importance of that person. Normanhunter2 (talk) 15:08, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
