Ahluwalia (Punjabi: ਅਹਲੂਵਾਲਿਆ (Gurmukhi), اہلوالیہ (Shahmukhi), अहलुवालिया (Devanagari)) is one of twelve Sikh Misls, or fighting clans, founded by the misldar (leader of the misl) Jassa Singh Ahluwalia in mid-eighteenth century Punjab, who also found the Kapurthala State. Some Hindu Punjabis also use Ahluwalia as their last name.

History and traditions

The term Ahluwalia came into use after the rise of a resident of the Ahlu village (located 11 miles S.E. of Lahore), Jassa Singh Ahluwalia as a misldar of the Sikh Empire of Punjab was the first Ahluwalia or Walia. Hence his descendants and followers came to be known by Ahluwalia or Walia in urban areas. Later, descendants of other non-Sikh residents of the village also started using Ahluwalia, now a sizable community among Punjabis.

  • H. P. S. Ahluwalia – Mountaineer. He climbed Mt. Everest on 29 May 1965. In Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 he was injured and confined to the wheel chair. He set up Indian Spinal Injury Society in 1993. He was awarded Padma Bhushan award in 2002. Major Ahluwalia is also the chairman of Rehabilitation Council of India and is a recipient of several awards like Padamshree, Arjuna award, National Award for the best work done in the field of Disability, order of the Khalsa (Nissan A Khalsa). He has written several books like ‘Higher than Everest’, ‘Beyond the Himalayas’, ‘Everest is within you’.[2]
