The 2016 Summer Paralympic Games will be the fifteenth Paralympics and will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016. The host city of the Games was announced at the 121st IOC Session (which was also the 13th Olympic Congress) held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2009.

Sports

The 2016 Summer Paralympic program is scheduled to feature 22 sports. Initially seven sports began the bidding for inclusion in the 2016 program. Badminton, basketball for athletes with learning disabilities which was previously dropped after being an event at the 2000 Paralympics, canoeing, golf, powerchair football, taekwondo and triathlon all applied to be included.

In December 2010, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) governing board gave its approval to canoeing and triathlon.[2][3]
