VisualEditor awards and nominations
hello there. I'm pretty new and I know this might sound like a stupid question but for the life of me I can't find the answer anywhere. On VisualEditor, How do I create the green and pink colors that accompany either nominated or won on an awards and nominations table? Thank you!--Rainingtalent (talk) 07:20, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Rainingtalent, in VisualEditor select the part of the table where you want to add the colored "Won" or "Nominated", erase whatever text is already there, click on the "Insert" dropdown menu and select "Template", search for "won" for the green "Won" or "nom" for the pink "Nominated", select the first choice then click "Add template", then, without adding anything to that menu, click "Insert". It will not show up properly in VisualEditor mode. But if you click on "Save page" then "Review your changes" you will get to a preview of your edits, it should display properly here if you followed this correctly, then save the page to finish. Geolocate broken?

- @Chaheel Riens: Please give an example (always give an example if possible, no matter what you report). IPv6 addresses have no "(Alternate)" link as shown by Special:Contributions/50.247.201.157 versus Special:Contributions/2601:5C5:8200:7550:21C:B3FF:FE7A:5E21, so I guess your case is an IPv6 address. - Nah, it's not an IPV6 address. I know that they're not supported by Geolocate, as I asked that very question a few months ago, and got the same answer as above. However, this time it's every regular IP address. If I click on your example of Special:Contributions/50.247.201.157, it takes me to https://db-ip.com/$1 - which is a 404 not found.
- In fact, for me, IPv6 addresses used to have the entire Geolocate section missing, but according to your example above, they also have a Geolocate link - although it also takes me to a 404 not found.
- I'm accessing Wiki from very different locations and using Chrome in one instance, and Firefox in another but still seeing the same result, so it's not (I think) a session or cache issue. Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:12, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

- You must have selected en-gb or en-ca as language at Special:Preferences. They are often poorly supported in interface messages and not recommended – at least not by me but some British editors complained when I said that [2] in the message displayed at top of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences?uselang=en-gb, so it was watered down to just say "you may miss some local customisations". In this case the problem happened yesterday in [3] when Mr. Stradivarius transcluded the normal English message without passing the parameter with the IP address. MediaWiki message parameters work a little differently from template parameters and I don't know whether the parameter can be passed in a normal way. I will look into it. Bolded pages turning regular on my Watchlist
When I load or refresh my Watchlist, the unvisited pages show up as bold only briefly, then they turn normal. This may have started happening after I added some Beta features from my preferences, but I'm not sure (in any case, removing the features again didn't fix the issue). - Which seems bass ackwards. It would seem that bolding, if it is done, should be done only in response to the enabled option to "Display pages on your watchlist that have changed since your last visit in bold". That option not enabled, should not bold anything at any time. Watch lists did not used to do this bold-first-then-turn-off.

Mistake in article "Timolol"
Hi,
The synthesis provided is wrong. The correct structure of Timolol includes a tertiary butylated nitrogen and the synthesis shows an iPr group instead of the tBu. Compare the structure provided top right in the article with the last steps of the synthesis.

- What you say seems to me to be true, though I don't even know what "i-Pr" means. I see that reference 6 in the article uses "Bu-t", which must mean a tertiary butyl group. - If you are referring to Category:Vietnam War novels, it's a list of existing Wkipedia articles about Vietnam war novels. Does your novel have a Wikipedia article about it? - To display in a category, the proper category tag would be placed on the article page, and by the magic of Wiki-dom, all the pages with that category tag display on the "category" page.

- You are not blocked. However as stated above you are not the appropriate person to create an article about yourself. Wikipedia compiles significant content that reliably published third parties have stated about a subject, if that doesn't exist, then no article can be created about the subject. - (edit conflict) The only "need" for removal of images would be for copyright violation, and all of the images appear to be appropriately licensed.

- And who are the "we" and "us" of whom you speak? Are you Ms Keaton's representative? The usual reason for a rep to request removal of an image is because they deem it unflattering. - Are you by any chance referring to a photo shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. The image (and other text) before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:32, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

- We have articles and base the content on what the third parties say about the subject. We dont really care how you would like to be covered. People with a conflict of interest generally have a very poor ability to view the subject in the appropriate light. - Nobody needs a Wikipedia page. Wikipedia has guidelines on what is notable enough to be included here. Please see the general guidelines for all articles and the general notability guidelines. Wikipedia is not here to promote your product. We require independent sources regarding a product's notability. To be blunt, we really don't care what the company wants to put out about their product as they are usually inherently bias due to their conflict of interest. If you believe you can overcome these obstacles and that your product follows all of these guidelines you can use articles for creation to create your article. Another editor will evaluate your submission and determine if it is right for Wikipedia. No, it is trioxene. Google trioxene malaya and see what I mean. This page specifically mentioned ICI as the designer of trioxene in 1954 and used by the British for defoliation at that time. If anyone should find it under another heading please inform the blog." The author of said comment is almost certainly mistaken; as said above, we never had an article entitled "Trioxene", but we did and still do have an article for trioxone, a major component of Agent Orange. If you're still sure you once visited a Wikipedia article entitled "Trioxene", try to find it in your browser's history, and pot the complete URL here.

All references to Trioxene in Wiki have been removed since the sale of the name to Vevy chemicals in Italy. They manufacture an anti ageing cream called Trioxene-LV. - It's pretty much impossible to remove "all references" to something on Wikipedia; every change to a page is logged in the associated page history, and even when an edit or article is deleted, there are still many records and traces of it to be found (that's why I asked for the original URL of the page you claimed to have visited).
- You're right that there isn't a single instance of "trioxene" to be found on Wikipedia; that's because it's almost definitely a misspelling of trioxone, which otherwise meets most of your conditions (defoliant, developed before 1953, used by the British in Malaysia, etc).
- And for the record, Trioxene-LV is "Isodecyl hydroxypropane tricarboxylic acid mono ester"; which means it's a bit like ethyl citrate and various compounds in fruits, completely unrelated to defoliants like trioxone. ʍw 17:06, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
Issues with Submitting an Article
Hello,
A colleague and I have been trying to have a page about an association added to Wikipedia and it's been deleted twice; first because there wasn't enough "significant" information about the organization for the inclusion in an encyclopedia and the second time was because apparently with the added "significant" information, it was viewed as too promotional.
For the sake of argument, here is a link to a well-known, used to be on a lot of people's shelves here in the US, encyclopedia Britannica which follows a similar format to what was submitted for the association - about the topic, the history, new developments and the like.

It is concerning that as an online "encyclopedia" there appears to be a lack of consistency and clarity regarding appropriate content, what gets approved and what edits are permitted. I understand you operate with volunteers, which is commendable, but may also be leading to the fragmentation and hurdles to get reliable information to the general public.
We would be most appreciative of any assistance you could provide.

- You didn't mention the article or organization in question (and linked to the Encyclopedia Britannica article for "public health", which as you can see, we do have an article for); some investigating led me to National Nursing Centers Consortium (deletion log; Google cache for non-admins).
- In Wikipedia, WP:Notability not about what you write in the article, but what others, unconnected with the National Nursing Centers Consortium, have written about it in independent, reliable sources, like published books, news, and magazine articles from respectable publishers. My advice to you is to trim down the last section "Work to Advance Nurse-led Care" to only those events which have received coverage in the news or other reliable sources, and combine it with the section "Notable Events" (to remove the advertisement-like section title "Work to Advance Nurse-led Care"), and submit it via the Articles for Creation system, where an experienced Wikipedia editor will either accept it, or leave comments about improvements that should be made, rather than delete it. ʍw 15:51, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

needs help siting same source multiple times
Hi, I'm working on an article and I would like to cite the same source multiple times throughout my article. I read that I must create a ref name and then I can simply use that to refer to a source many times. I know how to include a source. I don't now how to create the ref name that will be connected to the same source. Please explain. Here is an example, This is my source [1]

Edward Galloway change of article title
There is an article call Edward Galloway about a soldier killed at the beginning of the American Civil War. The soldier's name was actually Edward Gallwey. The US army record at the National Archive provides name, date of death, location and cause, so the information can be validated. However, I have never changed an articles title before. I believe I create a new article with the correct name and transfer the text? Not too sure so will not move forward until I have instructions or help. Any suggestions? OK, I subsequently read the instruction manual and realise about the move button. However, rather than move I have just included an additional paragraph in the article to cover the name variations and added a citation link to the U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 available on Familysearch and included a link to a newspaper article on his brother who was killed in 1863 at Port Hudson. So I will leave the move to a later date or to others who may feel inclined. Many thanks for comments.

Hi-
I've recently come back to a group that I was involved with for years.
Many of the folks that were relied upon for tech help have gone away. The wiki has been one of the glues that hold the group together.
None of the pages are visible, although if one looks at history / source, all of the data appears to be there.

- @Skyllfully: I use http://tools.wmflabs.org/supercount/ for my total edits and the breakdown for each section. The default also shows the 10 most edited pages in each namespace. If you want to see just your mainspace edits you can use the regular contributions page. - Yes, many of our articles about the Quran (and many other topics other than Pokemon, hurricanes and Gibraltar) are not in very good shape.
- But, Wikipedia does not accept "information that editors know", it only accepts content that is verifiable as having been published in a reliable source with a reputation for fact checking and editorial oversight. If you want to help, you can go to the article's talk page, start a new section with a header title like "suggested sources" and then provide information about sourcing options that can be used to improve the article. - You can't delete it. Only admins can do that. What you can do is A) put a speedy delete tag on it with a valid reason given, B) PROD it, again with a valid reason, C) put it up for AFD, or D) improve the article so that it can stay, if the subject is notable enough for an article. Problems with encyclopedic tone
Hi there,
I have attempted to edit a wikipedia page (Daren Shiau) about a writer several times, but it seems I can't get the "encyclopedic tone" right.
I have used another Singaporean writer's Wikipedia page for reference (Cyril Wong), but somehow I can't get rid of that "wrong tone used" message from the page I am editing.
Can someone tell me how I can rectify this problem? Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

- Wikipedia is not sentient, it can't automatically analyse the page and decide whether it's encyclopedic. You have to wait for someone to review the page manually and remove the "wrong tone used" message. JIP | Talk 14:36, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

- I have removed the "Tone" template, added a "No footnotes" template and collected the ELs under External Links, not references. Entry editing
Hi,
I need help in revising an entry. I am trying to improve the entry entitled, "Adrian Parr." I have more information to put in the entry, and I will be making major changes to it. I want to make the changes, but I am worried about creating any controversy within the Wikipedia community. I wanted to know what is the proper procedure to make major changes. I have read the guidelines, and I have alerted people (through the entry's "Talk Page") about my intentions. However, I don't know if I should do anything else.
In addition, the top of the flag shows there are problems with the entry's neutrality and problems with external links. However, I am not sure how to fix those. Not to mention, the flags says those issues have been resolved -- but if they are resolved why are the flags still on top of the page. May you please help me with this?

If you have concerns about the content you wish to add/change/remove, then you can start a discussion on the article talk page like you did here and explain what you want to do and why. If no one objects in a few days, then go and make the changes. If your changes get reverted there will usually be a message either in the edit summary or on the talk page or on your page explaining why. Regards with using certain sources as references
I understand that using facebooks linked to government agencies/bureau are a bit okay (e.g. The official facebook account of the Philippine National Police), but I'd like to ask about sources that don't have much leeway and uses forum boards as references since certain facts are not that known. Adding information to a cite the second time you use it
Is there a way to use the same citation twice but add information to the second use? The first time I use the citation I used it in a general sentence so I want to cite the whole thing without giving a specific page number. The second time, I want to point to specific pages in the report. Is there a way to use <ref name="SWGDRUG" /> for the second use? Or do I have to put in two completely different cites?
