Sylvia Sayer

Thanks for your work on Sylvia Sayer - very interesting. Next time I go to Huccaby I shall see if I can take a picture of her mother's memorial. I also LibraryThing, and went and looked her up there. She seems to have written a book called The Outline of Dartmoor's Story. There's also a mention of her in Crispin Gill's Dartmoor: A New Study.

Undoubtedly the preservation of Dartmoor in the last quarter-century has owed more to one individual than will ever be realised. Sylvia Sayer, grand-daughter of Robert Burnard, founder of the Dartmoor Preservation Association, and herself chairman of it since the end of the war, has built it up into one of the most powerful amenity societies in the country, and has been its most indefatigable worker and its most powerful voice: 'the shield of the moor', in Henry Slesser's phrase. Her knowledge is enormous, her industry unbelievable. If her battles have taught her to be ruthless in her methods she has never lost her natural charm and good humour. Sometimes it seems as if in her the issue polarises and becomes personal; she has earned the kind of venom usually reserved for party politicians of the most successful kind, yet she has seen her DPA followers grow to over a thousand, and perhaps her greatest achievement is that she has roused the conscience of an even vaster number of people.

All the best, DuncanHill (talk) 21:30, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for those kind words, Duncan. She was a fascinating character, well deserving of a decent article, I think. I have both those publications and was going to mention her Outline. But I'd not seen that quote from Gill – I'll obviously have to work in the "shield of the moor" somewhere! What I really need is a usable photo of her – any ideas? Thanks again,  —SMALLJIM  21:49, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The quote is on page 16 of my copy (first edition 1970, second impression 1977). I've not found a picture yet - will keep an eye out, it'd be good for the Librarything page too. Perhaps worth asking the DPA if they have one they could give permission for? DuncanHill (talk) 22:00, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, just looking over my books on Dartmoor, Libarything says I have A Dartmoor Century: 1883-1983 by John Somers Cocks, with a forward by Sylvia Sayer - but I can't find it in my flat! DuncanHill (talk) 22:06, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You're sure you've not miscatalogued Simon Butler's Dartmoor Century, pub. by Devon Books/Halsgrove in 2000? Astonishingly, on page 159 of that book is an uncredited photo of Sayer complete with eye-patch and dog. I'll have to refresh myself on the fair use rules.  —SMALLJIM  22:20, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm sure it's the Cocks I've got - it's used as a source on the DPA article. I think it's quite a slim volume, so maybe it's hiding behind or within something else. I found this blog by someone who knew her - it has some photos which it might be possible to get permission to use. There's a rather charming line-drawing of "Sherberton farm as it was" by Sayer on page 32 of the Dartmoor National Park Guide (seventh impression 1979). DuncanHill (talk) 22:39, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm jealous then – I don't have that book! Thanks for the other leads, I'll have a look tomorrow, off to bed now.  —SMALLJIM  23:01, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@DuncanHill: I hope you found your slim volume. I've asked RoadRunnerCwll if he can help with a photo, because I don't think WP:Fair use is going to help: a photo would be good to have, but its absence wouldn't be detrimental to the readers' understanding of the topic (bullet 8). Incidentally all the illustrations in The Outline of Dartmoor's Story are by Sayer. You should get a copy: she draws and writes well, though her grasp of geology could be better:

When this earth was still a fiery ball, there was a great upboiling of molten granite where Dartmoor now is; and this later cooled into high peaks and deep chasms, which eventually weathered down into the tors and valleys that we see to-day.

I'm reminded of Sherlock Holmes not knowing that the earth went round the sun :)  —SMALLJIM  15:49, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Still haven't found it - it seems to have run off with another Dartmoor booklet which I can't find either! I'll keep an eye out for The Outline..., there's a bookstall in Tavistock pannier market which I get to when I can and which usually has a good selection of Dartmoor books. That is rather a shocking attempt at geology! DuncanHill (talk) 19:34, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I know that bookstall! I actually read Sayers' Outline for the first time yesterday. It's clearly aimed at the younger reader, but she can't stop herself from jumping onto her hobby-horse every so often. When writing about the last tin-miner on Dartmoor she told of the time when he was invited to take a "scientific gentleman" to the old mines: "He was looking for uranium. Fortunately he found none. If he had, doubtless by now some Ministry of Exploitation would have begun the disembowelling of Dartmoor on a new and mammoth scale".  —SMALLJIM  13:20, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Sylvia Sayer

Hello! Your submission of Sylvia Sayer at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know!

It's not an "issue" as such, just a suggestion for tweaking the hook. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:52, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, I agree that's an improvement. Thanks.  —SMALLJIM  10:17, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! DIT

I was looking at "what links here" and found User:Smalljim/DIT. Scanning that at the moment shows that your script copies broken wikitext. Search for text that starts with:

[[User:slakrs talk page to be almost inexplicable

at DIT and this ANI section (permalink). It's hard to think of a fix for that ... perhaps assume that if the user name contains "[[" it is not a user name and should be dropped? No need to do anything; this is just FYI in case it's of interest. Johnuniq (talk) 05:45, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Johnuniq: Thanks for the note. The page was a test of (the then new) Lua modules, with the code cribbed from User:Dragons flight. There are several problems with the script, but it still proves a useful quick overview of busy pages, though I don't use it much now. Learning Lua was one of those "that would be useful" unfulfilled wishes!  —SMALLJIM  16:45, 14 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting modules—not much code but it does a lot of good stuff. I agree about not worrying over minor issues and I just thought I'd let you know. I have a done a lot of Lua if you ever want thoughts. Johnuniq (talk) 04:06, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll remember your kind offer!  —SMALLJIM  09:44, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism at 'Paddington Bear'

Hi SmallJim, For some reason poor old Paddington Bear brings out the worst in some editors! I've left a message via Twinkle (thanks again!) for the latest culprit but the previous one (IP user 82.16.244.224) already had a couple of recent warnings on 10 September when I reverted his/her first 'contributions' so I didn't leave one myself. However, s/he made some more on 19 September which were more serious - I reverted them but didn't find time to flag them up with anyone else until now. Would you mind taking a look at the 19 September page history for Paddington to see what you think and to take the appropriate action? Very many thanks - and best wishes. JezGrove (talk) 12:47, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@JezGrove: if you get deeply involved in anti-vandalism work, you find that this sort of thing is going on all the time all over the place. A dedicated group of people specialise in dealing with it - see WP:CVU for instance ( I dip in and out). I'll keep an eye on PB for a while, though I'm not spending much time here at present. If the page becomes a clear vandalism target we can protect it for a while.  —SMALLJIM  09:52, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Smalljim, you've been very helpful as always! Don't worry about PB, he's on my (growing) watchlist and I'm much clearer now about the anti-vandalism process thanks to your link. (I really should have found the info myself, my apologies for being a nuisance.) Very best wishes! JezGrove (talk) 10:32, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@JezGrove: no problem. Happy to help where I can. I see that you don't have rollback yet. Read that link and if you think it would be useful, I can grant it to you.  —SMALLJIM  11:04, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see you has some dealings with User:Mistoop back in August. He seems to be back to his old tricks under the name of User:RailwayScientist. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 19:25, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

'fraid I'm not around here much at present – I'm glad to see that JamesBWatson has taken the necessary action.  —SMALLJIM  21:15, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You commented at:

Talk:Tor (disambiguation). Please see Talk:Tor#Requested_move_10_December_2015 In ictu oculi (talk) 20:13, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't comment this time because I didn't feel strongly one way or the other. Consequently I have no problem with the consensus opinion that Tor should be a dab page.  —SMALLJIM  14:51, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

COI

I saw some threads about COI from a few months ago but couldn't follow where the discussion went or if anything came of it. Do you know what happened? You can reply here. Thanks. -- GreenC 01:56, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It ended up at AN/I in May where he continued to deny any COI and accused me of all sorts of misdemeanors. Since no-one else there showed any interest, I dropped it. Shortly afterwards DGG tidied up the Lemelson article and it sat like that till October when Orthodox2014 did his usual trick of rehashing it into his preferred version (with a misleading edit summary) [1]. When I noticed earlier this month I reverted to DGG's version and did a little research which revealed Lemelson's widely-reported vigorous rebuttal of the WSJ article that Ortho wants to suppress. His continued claims of objectivity are looking more and more nonsensical, and to me the evidence suggests he's either someone close to Lemelson or is being paid. Lemelson is a dynamic and unusual character, but he isn't as divine or important as Ortho wants to paint him!  —SMALLJIM  14:06, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The singular focus, vigorous energy and time in defending the article and criticism, point to a connection. Re: the section called criticism, I recently saw this essay and if it came to RfC someone might bring it up and thus might be better to start from a stronger position with the info incorporated into the main article somehow. Or a new name for the section so it can have both pro and con in the same section. -- GreenC 17:30, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the pointer to WP:CRIT. Its content isn't familiar to me – I must have last referred to it before its focus was changed, which was in 2011 by the look of it. Anyway, I'm happy to go along with its current recommendations since it seems to be a widely followed essay. I'll see if I can find some independent positive commentary to go in the renamed section (I'm not 100% sure that its title is right, but I can't think of anything else yet). Thank you also for the further clean-up of the article.  —SMALLJIM  00:09, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I just left this comment with a history of COI investigations of Orthodox. It doesn't appear as if there has been one. Do you believe it should be taken to COIN? -- GreenC 03:49, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Something needs to be done. I've (finally) commented at the BLPN; I'd be interested to know what you think.  —SMALLJIM  11:37, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent detective work! Strong evidence. There is also his intimate knowledge of personal details of Lemelson's life he claims is in a source "somewhere". I think we should request a checkuser before going to coin, that may be the quickest and easiest route given the connections to Morning277 and the rest of it.
If you are reading this Orthodox: you will probably try to preemptively start your own coin as you did after I mentioned an rfc and you started an unfocused rfc that went off the rails. A defender doesn't start his own prosecution unless he is trying to derail the process so whatever coin you start will be ignored, we will start a coin if/when we are ready with the evidence to make an appropriate case. -- GreenC 15:21, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Although the evidence that someone connected with Lemelson paid for an article in 2013 is strong, I don't think the evidence linking Ortho with that is anything like as solid. There are other possible reasons for Ortho's actions, and CU won't help in linking him with the old case as it was far too long ago. CU may reveal if he's been editing other articles from other accounts recently, but I don't get the impression that's likely. At the moment I'm happy to see what comes of the BLPN (WP:OUCH comes to mind), but if you or anyone else think the quacking is loud enough to take things further (with care, knowing how he jumps on any tiny mistakes), do feel free. I'll continue cleaning up the articles as time and inclination permit (help welcome!). Unless an army of supporters quickly marches in, his credibility in these articles is gone.  —SMALLJIM  17:30, 21 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Qworty was a desperate last quack. Even though blocked I'll ask for a checkuser to make sure the IP is not running other accounts. Though if a professional they'll know how to avoid it. -- GreenC 21:48, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'll watch to see how it gets on. For my part, I just want to polish up both articles a bit, then I'll be off.  —SMALLJIM  22:07, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Someone may get to this before you...

If not... seems to misunderstand. Hope life is good. --Herby talk thyme 15:36, 4 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Emmanuel Lemelson

As mentioned, I have made some edits, additions, corrections and formatting changes to this article. You seem determined to remove encyclopedic content related to his investment research and the signficant impact of that research in several stock prices. I believe the article as it exists right now is well done, well referenced, balanced and consistent with the site's guidelines. I also have referred the article to RFC. But if you are interested in working with me in a collaborative way to address whatever your concerns are, I'm very happy to try to do that. Thanks. Orthodox2014 (talk) 19:04, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You need to rewrite the content in your own words before adding it to Wikipedia. You must also ensure that what you write can't be interpreted as advertising. Possible vandal

Hi, Smalljim. You recently reverted an edit by a certain anonymous user on the article Max B. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:96.4.9.78 Based on his record and talk page, he/she seems to have a record of questionable edits, and resulting reversions. Do you think something should be done about that? DA1 (talk) 00:47, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@DA1: The IP address is allocated to Education Networks of America, so it's probably in a school or a library. We get a lot of vandalism from this type of address and if they persist they end up being blocked for an extended period. You've prompted me to look at this one again and since nothing useful has come from the account since the last 6 month block in Nov 2014, I've blocked it for a year.  —SMALLJIM  10:11, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor personal attacking a new user

Hi again! I just wanted to let you know that Deez42Nutz, a new user, was attacked, for no reason, by the IP editor: 190.221.86.39. I cautioned him about doing so again since I was not able to undo that attack with Twinkle. Here is what that IP editor wrote: LOL F*** you b*tch. The reason why I pust asterisks because I want to avoid profanity and when I saw what the IP editor did I did not tolerate that. Could you please deal with that IP editor? Thanks. Ashbeckjonathan (talk) 03:38, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This sort of thing happens all the time here. In this case I'd guess that they are a couple of kids who know one another and are playing around. You did right to caution the IP, but there's nothing else to do at the moment.  —SMALLJIM  10:07, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that's true because personal attacks are not acceptable to Wikipedia. Maybe if that IP editor continues to make blatant personal attacks I'll report that IP since I was not able to report it on Twinkle. Ashbeckjonathan (talk) 16:19, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Woopy20: I've put one of our standard welcoming messages on your talk page. I hope you read it and will find something useful to do here!  —SMALLJIM  23:15, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

LETS STOP VANDALS! Woopy20 (talk) 23:24, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Yes, stopping the vandals is an important thing to do here. I've put another message on your talk page.  —SMALLJIM  23:37, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, sir!

I'd love to agree with you, but I wouldn't call satire "vandalism." Your inability to use words to fit situations is erroneous, and utterly disorienting. Please, accuse me of something I DID do, like edit a page when maybe, I shouldn't have, to which I'll respond, no need to take it so seriously, it was merely a joke. I'm a huge Florida fan and I always joke about how bad I think Kasey Hill is. I thought it would be funny. I got a good kick out of it, but apparently, not everyone finds these kinds of things funny. I respect your standpoint, but you should also take into account that just because you don't find it funny, doesn't mean others won't. Thank you. 66.177.228.139 (talk) 23:22, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

PLease don't hurt me, i'm sorry for all of this, please. I don't know what i was thinking, please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.111.205.34 (talk) 14:37, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Are you going to edit something else, or are you going to stop now?  —SMALLJIM  14:39, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's duplicating your user name now. I've noted on your talk how I've tried to fix that.  —SMALLJIM  12:58, 6 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the talk page

Many editors disagree with fad being asserted in the first sentence. See Talk:Paleolithic_diet#NPOV_.22fad.22_diet. See WP:CCC. QuackGuru (talk) 22:57, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So I now see. I'm not interested enough to get involved though. Enjoy your discussion!  —SMALLJIM  23:00, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Rather that assert it is a fad I tried to say what the source said. I am also having a difficult time removing WP:OR from the lede. QuackGuru (talk) 23:15, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Here's to the Administrator that's always on top of AIV, and vandalism! Cheers! Boomer VialHolla 17:01, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're very kind! I put it down to AddBad, my trial AV program. Anyway, you do great work yourself – I keep seeing you around! Best wishes,  —SMALLJIM  17:07, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

King Muh

hi wy i cannt create the article neo abstract expressionism i not menntion my name i using my contribture name king muh and how you know i promoting my art this article talks about neo abstract expressionism in visual perception it talks about past now and future ART (King Muh)

King Muh: I can't really improve on the many messages that have already been posted on your talk page. I would like to suggest that you re-read them carefully, taking special notice of the links to the policies and guidelines that define what we can and can't do here. Thanks,  —SMALLJIM  21:54, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Enough perhaps. WP:CIR seems to apply here. Do you think it's worth going to ANI? Pinging User:Johnbod and User:Dr.K.. Doug Weller talk 17:19, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. I already reported him at AIV. I think he should be blocked for disruption at first. If, when unblocked, he continues, we should then go to ANI. Dr. K. 17:26, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Now he is asking to be blocked. It is sad. Dr. K. 17:38, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, this did not prevent him from making the same edit again. Dr. K. 17:46, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Blocked now, and deleted his user talk etc. Perhaps he has a WP in his own language where he's happier. Johnbod (talk) 20:06, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
CIR, yes, and what appeared to be an unfortunate stubbornness. Thanks, all, for sorting this while I had my dinner :)  —SMALLJIM  20:34, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Really a weird editor, but it was time. Doug Weller talk 21:42, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Harassment of Debresser and others

Hello. There's a new one now, Special:Contributions/2607:FB90:1701:2EB5:0:5F:1060:1C01, so the best solution would probably be temporary protection of User:Debresser and User:117Avenue. Thomas.W talk 16:22, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked that one, thanks! Xeno has SP one, so I've followed and done the other.  —SMALLJIM  16:32, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, 7&6 – I really appreciate that. AddBad is picking up some good stuff at the moment!  —SMALLJIM  17:18, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I do that stuff heuristically and manually, and that is how we crossed paths. 7&6=thirteen () 17:19, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking M4nish.cse

Well… compare my note here. No biggie, but I think it'll be harder to watch him if he's blocked (and a block won't stop him from... , uh, forgot what I was going to say, per WP:BEANS). Just a thought. Bishonen | talk 21:27, 14 February 2016 (UTC).[reply]

@Bishonen: Sorry - I didn't see your AIV comment. I thought maybe just one more attempt to reason with him would get through.[5] Of course it didn't. But are you suggesting we should have warning levels 5-10 before we consider blocking? :)  —SMALLJIM  21:48, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No.. no.. it's a pity the AIV-bot removes conversation promptly! I just thought, in a case where an individual is hell-bent on promoting themselves, and their article has been salted, they're likely to try recreating it with another name; you know, just change the spelling a little. And if they're blocked, they're likely to use a sock, and then we may not find the "new" article. But I don't mean he should be unblocked, that would certainly send the wrong signals. I suppose all I mean, really, is that another time I'll put a note about having salted the article on the individual's own page, and maybe a hint to admins that they might be left unblocked (without teaching the individual to sock, in case they haven't thought of it for themselves). Never mind, I'm just thinking aloud. Bishonen | talk 08:59, 15 February 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Nice idea, but the trouble is, how does it end? You either persuade them to stop, or have to block eventually. And as you suspected, he did try it: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/M4nish.cse, and was caught. For now, tracking usage of Etgrlogo.png will show up any simple re-creations, too.  —SMALLJIM  10:27, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Protection requests

Please protect Haman (biblical figure) and Charles Martin (boxer). 2602:306:3357:BA0:383E:3FA3:2868:37E5 (talk) 23:35, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I see you had already made these requests at WP:RFPP and another admin has now dealt with them. I wouldn't personally have protected either of them yet – I don't think Haman needed it, and the activity at Martin had stopped hours ago. But no two admins are alike!  —SMALLJIM  10:11, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User Page

Good morning,

After further research, I understand why I need to redo my user page.

Thank you for your consideration and please allow me to do so.

Allan McNabb (talk) 15:01, 15 February 2016 (UTC)Allan McNabb[reply]

@Allan McNabb: Rather than immediately re-doing your user page, why not edit Wikipedia for its intended purpose: as an encyclopedia? That's the only reason any of us should be here – see Wikipedia:Here to build an encyclopedia. Good luck.  —SMALLJIM  15:31, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[User:Smalljim|SMALL] Thank you. That was my intent. I thought I needed some credibility first so was setting up a user page. Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Allan McNabb (talkcontribs) 22:29, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Since everything we do here is visible to everyone else, we build up our cred by what we do. What we are doesn't matter at all. However most regular editors do have user pages, with content in accordance with WP:UPYES (but not WP:UPNOT). Hope you like rules – we have enough for everyone!  —SMALLJIM  22:40, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sea cactus 13 deleting CSD tags

user:Seacactus 13 keeps deleting CSD tags from articles he created himself because he disagrees with the reasons. It does not matter if those tags were correct, you cannot delete them from your own articles. 2602:306:3357:BA0:31D1:3EE8:A6D2:EBAA (talk) 23:17, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
