The casting couch, casting-couch syndrome, or casting-couch mentality is the demanding of sexual favors by an employer or person in a position of power and authority, from an apprentice employee, or subordinate to a superior in return for entry into an occupation, or for other career advancement within an organization. The term casting couch originated in the motion picture industry, with specific reference to couches in offices that could be used for sexual activity between casting directors or film producers and aspiring actors.[1] It is not to be confused with the adult entertainment industry where such actions may be a prerequisite, although many pornographic films and pornographic websites play on the casting couch theme and allude to similarities one may find in casting couch scenarios in the film industry.[citation needed]

Allegations

Canada

  • In November 2014, the broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi turned himself in to Toronto Police and was charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcoming resistance by choking, after an investigation that began in October 2014. The charges concerned three separate women.[2] following termination by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation of its contract with Ghomeshi. The trial of Ghomeshi began on February 1, 2016, and lasted eight days. On March 24, 2016, the judge acquitted Ghomeshi of all charges on the basis that there was insufficient evidence to establish proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The inconsistency and "outright deception" of the witness' testimony had irreparably weakened the prosecution's case, the judge explained.[3]
  • In October 2017, the founder of Just for Laughs and vice-president of the Montreal Metropolitan Board of Trade businessman Gilbert Rozon was accused by nine women of sexual assault and harassment published in Montreal newspaper Le Devoir. Rozon resigned all his positions as a result. Women coming forward in the case included actress Salome Corbo, entrepreneur Geneviève Allard, director Lyne Charlebois and TV personality Julie Snyder.[4]
  • In October 2017, Quebec, Canada radio and TV personality Éric Salvail was accused of sexual misconduct allegations with 11 people coming forward in an article published in the Montreal daily La Presse. The alleged conduct spanned a 15-year period. Salvail sold most of his business concerns as a result, with many media outlets associated with his shows discontinuing his shows.[5]

United States

  • The casting-couch tradition originated in Broadway theatre in the 1900s. In his book The Boys From Syracuse: The Shuberts' Theatrical Empire (1998), Foster Hirsch details how Lee Shubert kept "an elegantly furnished boudoir, reserved for leading ladies and promising ingénues, and a shabby, spartanly furnished room with a single couch where he met chorus girls and soubrettes." "If you didn’t sleep with them you didn’t get the part," dancer Agnes de Mille later recalled about the Shubert brothers. "The Shuberts ran a brothel: Let them sue me."[6]
  • The legend of the Hollywood casting couch coincided with the rise of the studio system in the 1910s. Several mogul producers were rumoured to have been enthusiastic practitioners (most infamously, Harry Cohn, Darryl F. Zanuck, Jack L. Warner and Howard Hughes) and it has been claimed that many actresses attempted, with varying degrees of success, to attain stardom via this route.[7][8][9]
  • In 1945, Maureen O'Hara was quoted as saying, "I don't let the producer and director kiss me every morning or let them paw me".[10] In 2004, she repeated: "I wouldn't throw myself on the casting couch, and I know that cost me parts."[11]
  • In her 1977 autobiography Scarlett O'Hara's Younger Sister: My Lively Life In and Out of Hollywood, actress Evelyn Keyes blasted Columbia Pictures boss Harry Cohn for wrecking her career when she rejected his sexual assault in 1946.[12]
  • In her memoir Past Imperfect: An Autobiography (1978), actress Joan Collins described her experience of the casting-couch behaviour of two 20th Century Fox execs Buddy Adler and Spyros Skouras in the 1950s.
  • Since 1988, Theresa Russell has alleged in multiple interviews that she was propositioned by legendary producer Sam Spiegel during her first casting session for The Last Tycoon (1976).[13][14] According to his biographer, Spiegel had previously made liberal use of the casting couch during the making of The Chase (1966).[15]
  • In her memoir Child Star (1988), actress Shirley Temple claimed that producer Arthur Freed exposed himself to her in 1940 when she was 12.
  • In 1988, director Victor Salva was convicted of sexual misconduct with one of Clownhouse's underage stars – a 12-year-old boy – including videotaping one of the encounters.[16]
  • In a 1995 article, journalist Peter Keough described Hollywood as "a town where everyone is selling body and soul for fame and fortune and all – especially women – are considered commodities".[17]
  • In their book Inside Star Trek: The Real Story (1996), Herbert F. Solow and Robert H. Justman claimed that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry boasted to crew members about "late night casting sessions" with potential actresses.
  • In a 1996 interview, actor Woody Harrelson declared "every [acting] business I ever entered into in New York seemed to have a casting couch ... I've seen so many people sleep with people they loathe in order to further their ambition."[18]
  • Since 1998, several women, including Jenny McCarthy, Lisa Guerrero,[19] Rae Dawn Chong,[20] Julianna Margulies,[21] Portia de Rossi[22] and Eva LaRue,[23] have accused action star Steven Seagal of sexual harassment in auditions and interviews.
  • In 2000, Susan Tyrrell alleged that John Huston pressured her into sex before directing her in Fat City (1972): "Goddamn it. Goddamn bastard. I still hate him, because what he took from me was huge. I totally believed in that world. I wanted to be an actress, and after that it was all over. I never wanted to act again. He stole something sacred from me. He’s the seed for all my behavior. And also the guilt, because I felt huge guilt that I didn’t run out of there. Titanic guilt, for laying down with him. But that’s how stupid I was. How naive. And I never got over it."[24]
  • Since 2001, many young women have made sexual harassment allegations against celebrity fashion photographer Terry Richardson after they modeled for him.[25] In the aftermath of the 2017 Harvey Weinstein scandal, as a spotlight was put on these allegations, mulitiple fashion brands and magazines decided to no longer commission Richardson's work, including Valentino, Bulgari and the Condé Nast magazines Vogue, Glamour, Wired, Vanity Fair and GQ.[26]
  • In Michael G. Fitzgerald and Boyd Magers' book Ladies of the Western: Interviews with Fifty-One More Actresses from the Silent Era to the Television Westerns of the 1950s and 1960s (2002), several actresses describe their casting-couch experiences. Lois January spoke of unwanted sexual attention from Tim McCoy, Noel Madison and Carl Laemmle Jr.. Joan Barclay stated: "Sam Goldwyn chased me around a desk one day. Nothing came of it." Nancy Saunders claimed Maxwell Arnow "chased me around his desk—twice; then gave up." Roberta Gale said that sexual harassment was "one of the reasons I left the business, those awful lechers who seemed to be every place."
  • In 2003, Italian actress Asia Argento stated that Hollywood producers expect oral sex from young starlets in exchange for roles.[27] Her semi-autobiographical film Scarlet Diva (2000) features a scene along these lines with painter Joe Coleman playing a lecherous producer inspired, as revealed in October 2017, by Argento's alleged experience with Harvey Weinstein.
  • Robert Hofler's book The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson (2005) alleged that Hollywood agent Henry Willson was a gay casting-couch predator.[28]
  • In her 2005 autobiography, actress Goldie Hawn stated that cartoonist Al Capp sexually propositioned her on a casting couch and exposed himself to her when she was nineteen years old. When she refused his advances, Capp became angry and told her that she was "never gonna make anything in your life" and that she should "go and marry a Jewish dentist. You'll never get anywhere in this business."[29][30]
  • At a 2005 class reunion, producer Chris Hanley told his former classmates that "almost every leading actress in all of [his] 24 films has slept with a director or producer or a leading actor to get the part that launched her career".[31]
  • In her autobiography Ich habe ja gewusst, dass ich fliegen kann (2006), Austrian actress Senta Berger claimed that in a New York hotel suite in 1965 producer Darryl F. Zanuck exposed himself to her beneath his silk dressing gown and offered to forgive her for the atrocities of the Nazis if she slept with him.
  • In 2006, a New York City producer was accused of sexually harassing several members of the cast of the off-Broadway play Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead. She had previously been accused of harassing actors Gabriel Byrne, Aidan Quinn, Esai Morales and Joey McIntyre.[32]
  • In 2007, an article in Vanity Fair denounced former manager of boy bands the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, Lou Pearlman (who was arrested for financial related crimes such as money laundering) for improper casting couch-behavior.[33] In 2017, Lance Bass of 'N Sync wrote that "as a society, we've been become far too comfortable with the pervasive 'casting couch' adage that it no longer resembles what it truly is—sexual assault. ... I grew up in the entertainment business and I've experienced my share of unwanted advances from both men and women who saw me as a target.[34]
  • In 2009, Hollywood composer Joseph Brooks was arrested on charges of raping or sexually assaulting eleven women between 2005 and 2008, allegedly having lured them to his apartment to audition for movie roles. Brooks committed suicide in 2011 before the case came to trial.[35]
  • In 2009, Megan Fox stated that "Any casting couch shit I've experienced has been since I've become famous. It's really so heartbreaking. Some of these people! Like Hollywood legends. You think you're going to meet them and you're so excited, like, 'I can't believe this person wants to have a conversation with me,' and you get there and you realise that's not what they want, at all. It's happened a lot this year actually."[36] She also claimed that "she went to director Michael Bay's house to audition and he made her wash his Ferrari while he filmed her".[37]
  • In a 2009 interview with OK! Magazine, actress Charlize Theron claimed that when she was 18 she was propositioned at an audition by a pajama-clad Hollywood director.[38] "I thought it was a little odd that the audition was on a Saturday night at his house in Los Angeles, but I thought maybe that was normal."[39]
  • In 2009, Jon Peters described mogul Ray Stark as an "ogre of male chauvinistic casting-couch sexual entitlement" who molested Barbra Streisand and Lesley Ann Warren when they auditioned for him.[40]
  • In a 2009 interview, actor Mickey Rourke declared: "There's definitely something called a casting couch... if you take a girl from the Midwest with a pretty face and instead of inviting them in for an audition in the morning, the directors invite them for dinner at night? ... I can recall with certain women, we'd go out, I'd park the car on Sunset and by the time I'd got to the curb there'd be three or four producers handing them cards. ... There's ways you get a job and ways you get a job."[41]
  • In April 2010, actor Ryan Phillippe admitted on the Howard Stern Show that he had had to flee a "creepy" casting-couch session when he was 18 or 19.[42]
  • In a 2010 interview, Ola Ray explained why she fled Hollywood in 1998: "There were so many big-name directors who told me that if I wanted to do films I had to sleep with them."[43]
  • In a 2010 interview with Access Hollywood, actress Lisa Rinna said a producer had asked her for "a quickie" when she was a 24-year-old candidate for a role on a prominent television series.[44] At the same interview, Rinna's husband Harry Hamlin claimed that a female casting director attempted to seduce him in the late 1970s when he was 27.[45][46]
  • In 2011, Corey Feldman alleged that children were also victims of the casting couch.[47] Paul Petersen said that some of the culprits are "still in the game" and Alison Arngrim claimed that Feldman and Corey Haim were given drugs and "passed around" in the 1980s.[48] During the Harvey Weinstein scandal in 2017, Feldman launched a campaign to make a documentary to bring down a powerful Hollywood paedophile ring which included Jon Grissom, Martin Weiss and Alphy Hoffman.[49]
  • In 2012, actress Jessica Barth accused producer and Primary Wave Entertainment talent agent David Guillod of drugging and sexually assaulting her during a dinner meeting. Barth revived the case in November 2017 in the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.[50] Shortly after this, three other women accused Guillod of rape in 2014 and 2015.[51]
  • In the November 2012 issue of Elle, Susan Sarandon spoke of a "really disgusting" casting-couch experience in New York City in the late 1960s or early 1970s. "I just went into a room and a guy practically threw me on the desk. It was my early days in New York and it was really disgusting. It wasn't like I gave it a second thought. It was so badly done."[52][53]
  • In December 2012, Sienna Miller recalled an audition where "the director told this guy to start seducing me and kissing my neck while we read" and " I felt really violated by letting it go on for 10 minutes to try to get a job".[54]
  • In 2015, Rebecca Carroll wrote a piece about being sexually assaulted when she was 14 by a famous New York City TV anchor.[55]
  • In July 2016, television executive Roger Ailes was accused of sexual harassment by former Fox News Channel anchor Gretchen Carlson. More than twenty other women, including Megyn Kelly and Andrea Tantaros, have since come forward with similar allegations about Ailes' predatory casting couch-like behavior in the television industry over a 50-year period.[56] Since then, Fox's Bill O'Reilly has also been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment; $45 million has so far been paid to six women.[57]
  • In October 2016, Cher posted on Twitter that she had had a "scary experience" with an unnamed and now deceased "gross" rich, important film producer at his house. She stated that she walked out and they never spoke again because "no job is worth that".[58]
  • Also in October 2016, Rose McGowan tweeted that she had been raped by a studio head who then bought the distribution rights to one of her films. She was then shamed while her rapist was adulated despite the rape being an open secret in Hollywood.[59] A year later, the studio head McGowan accused was revealed to have been Harvey Weinstein.
  • On 1 November 2016, defence lawyers for Bill Cosby, who has been accused of sexual assault by over 60 women, wrote that, "Even if proven (and it could not be), the age-old 'casting couch' is not unique to Mr. Cosby, and thus not a 'signature' nor a basis for the admissibility of these witnesses' stories, let alone a conviction."
  • In March 2017, actress Jane Fonda claimed: "I've been fired because I wouldn’t sleep with my boss."[60]
  • In April 2017, Jennifer Lopez claimed that early in her career, when she got the lead in a movie, a "big director" asked to see her breasts.[61]
  • In June 2017, Alison Brie claimed she was asked to take her top off during an Entourage audition[62] and Emmy Rossum alleged she was asked to visit a film director's office in a bikini.[63]
  • In July 2017, actress Zoe Kazan stated: "I had a producer ask me on set once if I spat or swallowed."[64]
  • On October 5, 2017, a New York Times article accused Oscar-winning film producer and mogul Harvey Weinstein of three decades of sexual harassment of and paying off settlements to actresses Ashley Judd (in 1996) and Rose McGowan (in 1997), Filipina-Italian model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez (in 2015) and several named and unnamed female Miramax and Weinstein Company production assistants, temps and other employees.[65] Weinstein promptly issued an apology for his past behavior and denied some of the allegations[66] before being fired by the board of his own company.[67] Shortly thereafter, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Judith Godrèche,[68] Heather Graham,[69] Cara Delevingne,[70] Kate Beckinsale,[71], Paz de la Huerta[72], and many others spoke out about their experiences of being sexually harassed by Weinstein.
  • In the immediate aftermath of the Weinstein scandal in October 2017, actress Alyssa Milano encouraged people to use Tarana Burke's #MeToo in order to share their experiences of sexual harassment on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Around this time, actor Terry Crews tweeted that a "high-level Hollywood executive" had groped his genitals at an industry event in 2016.[73] He later filed a police report with the LAPD over the alleged assault naming the culprit as Adam Venit, the head of talent agency William Morris Endeavor's motion picture group.[74] The actor Rob Schneider spoke of a "gross" hotel-room encounter before he was famous with a famous, now-deceased director,[75] actor James Van Der Beek tweeted about sexual harassment by "older, powerful men" in Hollywood,[76] actress Molly Ringwald wrote of being sexually assaulted on set and demeaned in auditions,[77] and actor Tony Goldwyn tweeted about a casting-couch experience with an unnamed male when he was in the last year of acting school.[78]
  • On 15 October 2017, Alison Doody and Ruth O'Neill recounted their experience of the Los Angeles casting couch.[79]
  • On 17 October 2017, Reese Witherspoon said she felt "true disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old and anger at the agents and the producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment. And I wish that I could tell you that was an isolated incident in my career, but sadly it wasn’t. I’ve had multiple experiences of harassment and sexual assault."[80]
  • On 20 October 2017, actress-turned-novelist Carol Drinkwater alleged that director Elia Kazan attempted to rape her in an audition for The Last Tycoon (1976).[81]
  • On 22 October 2017, in an Los Angeles Times article, 38 women accused director James Toback of sexual harassment, often when they were aspiring young actresses hoping for a role in one of his films.[82] During the following days, more than 200 other women, including actresses Julianne Moore, Selma Blair and Rachel McAdams, came forward to complain about Toback's abusive behavior since the 1980s.[83][84]
  • On 25 October 2017, Artforum magazine publisher Knight Landesman resigned after being accused of sexual misconduct by nine younger women.[85]
  • On 27 October 2017, Janis Paige wrote that in 1944 the director of her next film sent her on a date with Alfred Bloomingdale who then attempted to rape her. She concluded that, "Maybe there's a special place in hell for the Alfred Bloomingdales or Harvey Weinsteins of the world and for those who aid and then deny their grossly demented behavior."[86]
  • On 30 October and 1 November 2017, Ariane Bellamar and Shelby Welinder respectively tweeted that Jeremy Piven had sexually harassed them.[87]
  • On 31 October 2017, in the wake of Anthony Rapp's allegation of 1986 sexual harassment against Kevin Spacey, Alex Winter, an actor and director who said he was sexually abused as a pre-teen child actor, said: "It's a very taboo subject. I don't know of any boys in any pocket of the entertainment industry that do not encounter some form of predatory behavior. ... It's really not a safe environment."[88]
  • On 1 November 2017, Anna Graham Hunter wrote an article about being sexually harassed on set by actor Dustin Hoffman in 1985 when she was a 17-year-old intern.[89] Writer-producer Wendy Riss Gatsiounis then came forward with a sexual harassment allegation relating to events in 1991.[90]
  • Also on 1 November 2017, in an Los Angeles Times article, six actresses including Natasha Henstridge, Olivia Munn and Jaime Ray Newman accused director Brett Ratner of sexual misconduct on film sets since the 1990s.[91][92]
  • On 3 November 2017, Kyle Richards described a producer saying "very perverted things" to her when she met him to discuss a role at the Beverly Hills Hotel when she was younger.[93]
  • On 7 November 2017, Jane Seymour alleged she was sexually harassed early in her career by "the most powerful man in Hollywood at that time", a producer who "stopped me from being an actress for a whole year" when she refused him sexual favours.[94]
  • On 9 November 2017, Kater Gordon accused Mad Men writer Matthew Weiner of telling her "that she owed it to him to let him see her naked."[95]
  • On 10 November 2017, in a long Facebook post, Ellen Page described sexual abuse experiences when she was just 16. She added: "Look at the history of what’s happened to minors who’ve described sexual abuse in Hollywood. Some of them are no longer with us, lost to substance abuse and suicide. Their victimizers? Still working. Protected even as I write this. You know who they are; they’ve been discussed behind closed doors as often as Weinstein was."[96]
  • Also on 10 November 2017, American actor Anthony Edwards published allegations about being abused by producer Gary Goddard when he was 12.[97]
  • Also on 10 November 2017, American writer and producer Andrew Kreisberg was accused of a pattern of alleged sexual harassment and inappropriate physical contact over a period of years, according to 15 women and four men who have worked with him in a range of positions.[98]
  • On 11 November 2017, the Australian actress, writer and producer Rebel Wilson tweeted that a male star had "asked me repeatedly to stick my finger up his ass" and about a "'hotel room' encounter with a top director".[99]

Europe

  • In 1930s Nazi Germany, Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels allegedly ran a casting-couch operation and aided the careers of actresses such as Jenny Jugo and Irene von Meyendorff.[100] In her memoirs, Swedish actress Zarah Leander described the "sleazy seduction scene" Goebbels arranged for her at his villa.[101]
  • In 1956, British fan magazine Picturegoer published a four-part casting-couch exposé entitled "The Perils of Show Business" featuring interviews with actresses such as Joy Webster, Dorinda Stevens, Anne Heywood and Marigold Russell.[102]
  • On an episode of the British Channel 4 TV series The Word in 1994, English actress Kate O'Mara claimed American producer Judd Bernard pulled down her panties during a hotel-room audition for the Elvis Presley vehicle Double Trouble (1967).[103] In her autobiography Vamp Until Ready: A Life Laid Bare (2003), O'Mara described this alleged casting couch incident (p. 61) and "many other close encounters with... this very unpleasant and humiliating procedure" (p. 32), including a well-known television casting director (pp. 32–33), the boss of Associated Television at Elstree Studios (pp. 34–35) and the director of Great Catherine (pp. 41–42).
  • In 1998, English writer-director Bruce Robinson described how as a 20-year-old young actor, he was given a role in the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet as Benvolio after the film's director Franco Zeffirelli fellated him in Rome.[104]
  • In 1998 and 1999, producer Alain Sarde and actor Robert de Niro were two of the high-profile filmmakers involved in two Parisian court cases exposing the borderline between the casting couch and prostitution for aspiring models and starlets.[105]
  • In 2002, actress Lesley-Anne Down spoke of finding fame in the late 1960s: "The casting couch was in full swing, people expected it... My teen-age years were pretty intense, a lot of pressure and a lot of horrible old men out there".[106] In a 1977 interview, she had also said: "I was promised lots of lovely big film parts by American producers if I went to bed with them... Believe me, the casting couch is no myth".[107] In 2015, Down discussed her experiences of sexual harassment in the 1970s by an unnamed legendary Hollywood actor and also by producer Sam Spiegel, saying that she had never really enjoyed her acting career: "Partly that was because of all the lecherous men, studio executives, producers and directors. There was so much running away and hiding under tables. Anyway, I started when I was ten and I’ve been doing it for 50 years."[108]
  • In his autobiography Close Up: An Actor Telling Tales (2004), John Fraser described how producer James Woolf used the casting couch to snare young men such as actor Laurence Harvey.[109]
  • In 2005, French film director Jean-Claude Brisseau was found guilty of sexually harassing two actresses between 1999 and 2001 during auditions for Choses Secrètes (2002).[110]
  • In 2007, actress Helen Mirren claimed director Michael Winner had treated her "like a piece of meat" at a casting call in 1964.[111][112] Asked about the incident, Winner told The Guardian: "I don't remember asking her to turn around but if I did I wasn't being serious. I was only doing what the [casting] agent asked me – and for this I get reviled! Helen's a lovely person, she's a great actress and I'm a huge fan, but her memory of that moment is a little flawed."[113]
  • In 2008, actress Ingrid Pitt described the unwelcome advances of two producers in hotels.[114]
  • In 2010, British actress Charlotte Lewis claimed director and confessed child-rapist Roman Polanski "forced himself" on her when as a 16-year-old she auditioned for him in Paris in 1983.[115] In September 2017, German former actress and model Renate Langer alleged Polanski raped her twice in 1972 when she was 15.[116] On 10 November 2017, former actress Mallory Millett accused Polanski of attempting to rape her in 1970, adding: "I just became extremely cynical about show business. I ended up fleeing the whole industry because all I did was turn down producers trying to get me under their desks and give them blow jobs. It is a cesspool in Hollywood - it’s all sexual harassment - every minute of it."[117]
  • In August 2012, actress Julie Delpy spoke out about casting-couch paedophiles in France in the 1980s.[118]
  • In October 2012, filmmaker Ben Fellows published claims that the casting couch was rife in the worlds of British television, theatre and advertising when he worked as a child actor and model in the 1980s. He claimed "the problem is both institutional and systemic in the entertainment industry."[citation needed]
  • In 2013, Myleene Klass stated that, "I don't think there's a single person in the entertainment industry that hasn't, at some point, experienced the casting couch thing".[119] Earlier, in 2010, she revealed a major Hollywood star (named in 2017 as Harvey Weinstein)[120] wanted to sign a sex contract with her.[121]
  • In 2013, Thandie Newton told CNN of how, aged 18, she was auditioned by a male director and a female casting director. "The director asked me to sit with my legs apart – the camera was positioned where it could see up my skirt – to put my leg over the arm of the chair and before I started my dialogue, [I was told] to think about the character I was supposed to be having the dialogue with and how it felt to be made love to by this person. It turned out the director used to show that video late at night to interested parties at his house – a video of me touching myself with a camera up my skirt." She declined to name the director.[122]
  • In 2014, it was claimed that incarcerated former public relations guru Max Clifford's "casting couch" at his Mayfair office was "his daughter's specially adapted disabled toilet cubicle".[123]
  • In 2016, Flavie Flament and several other women accused fashion photographer and film director David Hamilton of raping them when they modeled for him when they were 13 or 14. Hamilton committed suicide a few days later.[124]
  • In May 2017, actress Barbara Windsor claimed that in the 1950s an influential former actor ran his hands all over her after promising her a film role.[125]
  • In June 2017, the British trade union Equity launched its Manifesto for Casting which recommends that "no sex act should be requested at any audition" and "a performer should not be requested to undress in whole or in part unless a mutually agreed observer is present".[126]
  • On 11 October 2017, in a piece she wrote about Harvey Weinstein's attempt to sexually harass her, French actress Léa Seydoux also referenced three directors who had abused their position, one by making inappropriate comments to her and another by trying to kiss her.[127]
  • On 20 October 2017, an article by English actress Sarah Solemani described the "inappropriate" behaviour of a director when she was 19 and the "appalling" audition room practices of a "toxic" industry.[128][129]
  • On 24 October 2017, actor Kevin Sorbo alleged fashion designer Gianni Versace sexually harassed him when he was modeling in Italy in 1984: "He booked me for his fashion shows but I never got his campaign, but I knew the game, just like I know the game of Hollywood. Casting couches have always been around. I don't play that game, nor do I care to."[130]
  • Also in late October 2017, the veteran English theatre director Max Stafford-Clark was accused of sexual impropriety by five women, including Tracy-Ann Oberman and Emily Woof, dating back to 1992.[131]
  • On 4 November 2017, Italian showgirl Miriana Trevisan accused director Giuseppe Tornatore of sexually molesting her after a meeting about the film he was about to make, The Legend of 1900 (1998). She also spoke of being harassed by an important TV executive in Rome.[132]
  • On 8 November 2017, Fenella Fielding called Norman Wisdom a misogynist, having written in her memoirs: "Not a very pleasant man. Always making a pass – hand up your skirt first thing in the morning. Not exactly a lovely way to start a day’s filming."[133]
  • On 11 November 2017, Italian director Fausto Brizzi was accused by ten actresses of sexual harassment on Le Iene.[134]
  • On 13 November 2017, Danish authorities were reported to be investigating allegations from nine women of an "ingrained culture" of "sexual harassment, degradation and bullying" at Zentropa, the film studio co-founded by director Lars von Trier.[135] This came three weeks after Björk claimed she was sexually harassed by a Danish film director, widely assumed to be von Trier.[136]

Asia

  • In 2003 and 2006, Chinese actress Zhang Yu (张钰) released several graphic audio recordings and sex videos that she made herself to document her allegations that she won roles through the casting couch.[137] The videos were released on YouTube but have been subsequently removed.[138]
  • In 2004, Indian actress Preeti Jain filed a police complaint alleging that film director Madhur Bhandarkar had sexually exploited her for many years and made false promises to cast her in a lead role in his next film. She stated that she was never given any role in any of his films. According to Jain, Bhandarkar repeatedly had sex with her between 1999 and 2004 at Natraj Apartment at Yari Road, Hotel Seaside at Juhu and at Bhandarkar's friend's (Akbar) flat at Mount Mary Road, Bandra.[139]
  • In 2005, India TV's India's Most Wanted, an investigative TV show, caught Indian Idol host Aman Verma and longtime Bollywood actor Shakti Kapoor in a "sting" operation and accused them of abusing their positions to force women to have sex with them. They even produced video evidence of Kapoor making advances to a planted girl, in which Kapoor tells the girl that superstars Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta slept with people such as Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra and Yash Johar to get where they were. Verma, Kapoor and most of the Bollywood industry have defended themselves, calling India TV's claims unfounded and sensational and claim that the video footage of Kapoor is misleading.[140][141]
  • In 2006, Chinese actress Xiao Qiong wrote on her blog that director Yang Yichao had hinted to her that she could get a leading role in a TV drama if she slept with him.[142]
  • In 2009, Indian actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi reported an incident in her blog where she narrowly escaped sexual advances from a producer while casting for a film role.[143]
  • In 2009, South Korean actress Jang Ja-yeon committed suicide and left a suicide note claiming to have been beaten by her agent and to have been forced to have sex with media executives, directors, program directors and CEOs.[144] The film Norigae (2013) is loosely based on this case.
  • In 2011, Israeli actress Rina Golan caused controversy in Bollywood when she accused Anees Bazmee, Subhash Ghai, Anup Jalota and Dr Ali Irani of casting-couch behavior in her book Dear Mister Bollywood: How I Fell in Love with India, Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan.[145]
  • In 2011, Payal Rohatgi accused Dibakar Banerjee of casting-couch behaviour.[146]
  • In 2014, Indian actor Shashi Kapoor said that the casting couch existed in India in the 1960s for newcomer leading men by established leading heroines. Therefore, he was grateful to star Nanda for not subjecting him to the casting couch when she agreed to star with him when he was an unknown actor.[147]
  • Also in 2014, a model accused Inder Kumar of raping her on the pretext of a role in a Bollywood movie.[148]
  • In 2015, Ranveer Singh described a "sleazy man in Andheri" who invited him to his house on the pretext of a lucrative opportunity.[149]
  • In 2016, actress Tisca Chopra recounted how she avoided the casting-couch plans of a producer.[150]
  • In March 2017, South Indian actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar tweeted about being propositioned by the programming head of a leading TV channel and wrote that "I didn't come to the industry to be treated like a piece of meat."[151] Other Tollywood actresses have made similar accusations.[152]
  • In October 2017, Christoph Rehage, a filmmaker who attended the Beijing Film Academy, tweeted: "The Chinese movie industry is full of abuse. Many actresses, especially the younger ones, are being treated like prostitutes."[153]
  • In November 2017, Swara Bhaskar described her casting-couch experiences: "I've been propositioned by men who were in a position to cast me. I lost a few roles because I didn't give in. It made me vulnerable, nervous." She went on to describe a director who "started talking about love and sex and one night, arrived in my room, drunk, and asked to be hugged. It was scary!"[154]
  • Also in November 2017, Kangana Ranaut and several other actresses spoke out against Bollywood's casting couch.[155]
