Removing talk page comments

Quick policy question, not sure if this is the right place to bring it up. What is official policy on removing comments from one's own user talk page? WP:RTP seemed to deal mostly with article talk pages; is there a guideline or policy on personal talk pages? Thanks. MastCell 00:23, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a question I have asked recently as well - I have got a few answers (warnings should remain for a short time, but should not be used as a "wall of shame" for users) so that but no link to an official policy. My opinion is that people leaving warnings on talk pages need to know, at a glance, if a user has been involved in vandalism/spamming/controversy/etc before, as this will reflect the type of warning given (eg. leaving test is useless if the user was given test4 last week.) I also think anonymous users should have absolutely no "ownership" of their talk page, as IPs can change. This is all just my view, not policy. -- Chuq 00:55, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Summary:

• Removing recent vandalism warnings and similar posts to your Talk page from administrators and users in good standing is not acceptable.
• Removing recent comments from other users is impolite and impairs communication about editing articles, etc. This may be viewed as uncivil.
• If your talk page becomes too long or has old conversations, it is standard practice—but not required policy—to archive them in a subpage within your own user namespace, and place a link to that archive on your talk page. See Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page. Leave recent vandalism warnings and recent, open conversations on your talk page; do not archive them for a while.
• Note that if you want to make draft articles, have a separate to-do list, etc., you can make a subpage in your user namespace.
• See also Help:Talk page#User talk pages.

What happens after last warning for vandalizing?

Should I use another "last warning" template or move on to "temporarily blocked"? I assume only administrators can block users. Maxberners 02:40, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Post to WP:AIV. Also, if something is continuing obvious vandalism, just give them one warning blatantvandal and see if they stop. —Centrxtalk • 02:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image Criteria for speedy deletion

What is the proper way to tag an image that obviously is "squatting" or using Wikipedia as a file server? Do you have to use IFD? Thanks. Dylan Lake (t·c·ε) 03:09, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes please list the image at WP:IFD. If it passes a speedy deletion criterion, please list it for speedy deletion using the appropriate tag -- Lost(talk) 06:04, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

inquiry about new articles

Hello. This is my first time I'm editing in wikipedia and I don't know where to place this question. I just finished creating a new article that I saved. But how would I be able to link it with another one? Your tutorials are too vast and confusing for me to find out on my own. My personal email is <emial removed to prevent spam>. Thank you.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dsilon (talkcontribs) .

• Welcome to Wikipedia! Just wrap a double set of brackets ([]) around the word you want to link to. For example, link becomes [$[link]$] without the $ symbols. -- 03:55, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
You can make text in any article in Wikipedia link with another by surrounding concepts and words which have articles with doubled brackets. For instance Monty Python produces Monty Python (<---that's blue because it's a link). You can also tell the software to link text that is not the same as the article title by "piping" the link. This is done by placing a pipe (|) between the text you want to link and the name of the article you want that text to be a link to. Example: Python will make Python a link to Monty Python. Hope this helps. wikipedia is very friendly..........

Hi, Have a nice Day ! Actually i came accross wikipedia since long. And i found really it is very much helpful. But here i would like to request that, if you can put the daily news of different kind of papers like Times of India, Indian Express then that will be really fantastic. And also if you can put the news of India Today, OutLook India, then that will be very nice. And if you can give some bollywood news, then that will be super.

Wikipedia is a very friendly site !

Thanks, Ashok.....

vandalism

How can Raul Julia-Levy prevent people from vandalizing his page? He has been finding defamatory comments on his page. Is there a way where we can make his page only edited by otooledupree? Otooledupree 04:27, 8 November 2006 (UTC)otooledupree[reply]

Wikipedia can be edited by anyone. However vandalism or personal attacks are not allowed. If you see vandalism, please warn the vandal. If he persists, please report at WP:AIV. To maintain the neutral point of view, it is important that more than one editor edit the article. -- Lost(talk) 06:02, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Otooledupree, some articles that come under extreme amounts of vandalism can be temporarily protected, but the article you point to only seems to be subject to very small amounts of vandalism. As a politician and actor, I'm sure there are many people paying attention to the changes made to his page, and thus many people there to revert the changes any vandal is likely to make. If the subject of the vandalism is exceptionally offensive and may serve to harm the image of a living subject, it is possible to have an admin remove the offending statements from the article history, though this is not usually necessary. Also, please remember to fill out the Edit summary whenever you make edits. It benefits all editors watching the articles you edit on their watchlist.  freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ  06:36, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Use of an image

Hi, I am new to this site and only came across the article within Wikipedia because I was searching for description of a particular item. Within the article I have found an illustration and would like to use it on my web site, just displaying it. I have looked through and it is all confusing to me. Would I be able to use the image and refer to the URL of the page in Wikipedia (just cut & paste) or do I have to do anything else. Your help is much appreciated.86.138.157.230 04:33, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Two things:
1. If the image is used under fair use law (look at the image description page) then your website must, legally, qualify for fair use in the same way. This won't hurt Wikipedia, but it's law.
2. Please upload Wikipedia's image to your own server: simply linking to Wikipedia's image is leeching, assuming that Wikipedia's servers allow images to display externally.
Hope that helps, Nihiltres 04:53, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And a third thing: you need to read the licensing information for the image (which you just click on to do that). You must follow the terms there. In particular, the terms are likely to require you to reproduce any license information in full. This rather limits the casual use of images. Notinasnaid 08:36, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help, I will check out the laws & policies relating to this. Thanks again

Can an admin look at this user's contribs?

User:Llabronco has been uploading a lot of images and saying that they're free since you can find them on Google. I'm at work right now and don't have time to put each of them up at WP:PUI. And I can't put a notice on WP:AIV since I don't have the time right now to warn them 3 or 4 times. So this is the only way that I could think of to call an admin's attention to them. See also

Am I right in thinking there should be no red links in "See also" lists? (See, e.g. bow.) After all, that means there's nothing to see. On the other hand, perhaps there will be, one day. I couldn't find a policy on this. Thanks.--Shantavira 09:08, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I dont think there's a policy for this. This simply means that if you know about the subject, go ahead and create the article. No point in removing the red link. -- Lost(talk) 09:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It is confusing. I recommend removing the bad links - imagine a reader seeing "See also" blah blah blah...hey that's the one! What? No such page! Bah! Maybe you could store them in the talk page but the problem there is some pages, especially disambig pages don't get much attention. If you decide to remove the links try to include the links elsewhere in the article so it still shows a potential article to be created, or if it doesn't ruin the article, changing the heading See also to something that does make sense. But if in doubt don't do anything. --WikiSlasher 09:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with redirection

I need some help with some redirection. I am trying to list a page for a cabaret composer, pianist named Christopher Marlowe. Obviously and unfortunately for Chris, he shares his name with such an influential literary giant. How may I add a page on this 21st Century music man on a "shared" Christopher Marlowe page (is there a page)? Nancylamottfan 12:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Create a page for your Christopher Marlowe at Christopher Marlowe (pianist), or whatever you thikn should belong in the brackets afterwards. Then, on the Christopher Marlowe page at the moment, add a note at the top saying "For the pianist, see Christopher Marlowe (pianist)". There is already one redirection at the top of that page for the film Marlowe; add it after that. Trebor 13:19, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How can I recover the personal data (name, surname, e-mail) of a contributor?

I supposed that every contributor to Wikipedia would like to be identifiable and contactable. It seems to me that the links in the article history give no access to informations like the name or the e-mail of a contributor. Is there the possibility of knowing the identity (personal data like name, surname, e-mail address, institution) of the various contributors? 81.208.106.94 13:02, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, absolutely not. Except for e-mail (which is kept private), Wikipedia doesn't ask for or collect this information. Why do you suppose every contributor would like to be identifiable and contactable? Notinasnaid 13:11, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
• Online most people don't want to be identifiable, which is why there are privacy laws. Providing the info you talk about is not only impossible because we don't collect it unless they willingly provide said info on their userpage, it would also violate our privacy agreement. - Mgm|(talk) 13:16, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you get a username and enter your own email address, you can send emails via the 'Email this user' function on some users' userpages (doing so will reveal your address). Some users will give their details willingly, in which case you can read them from their user page, but most won't. --ais523 13:27, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

submitting an article

The answer to both your questions is yes. Anyone can add matter to an article as long as it adheres to the Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines. Thanks Russ S.

Hi Russ. I'm not sure why your edit didn't "stick". The edit history of Chydoridae] (is that the page you mean?) at Wikispecies doesn't show any edits by someone with your username. Could it be that you hit "show preview" instead of save page? In any case, once you save, your edits, even if reverted, should remain in the edit history so if indeed it was saved you are the apparent victim of a glitch. You might want to inquire further at the Wikispecies:Village Pump. This page is really for questions about using Wikipedia.--Fuhghettaboutit 04:12, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Remember, of course, that in the case of a rapidly reassigned dynamic IP, the user who made that comment may not be the user who posted the query here, leading to understandable frustration. --MCB 06:37, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the related contribution and edit histories, it looks like someone with your IP added some nonsense in 2005 (specifically "Sean whom attends CDSHS is the coolest, and jons a dork!!!!!!!" ) to the Nelson Mandela article. User Fvw then left a message to your IP in 2005 asking the owner not to post nonsense. IP Numbers and signatures

Hello,

After acquiring a username and then logging in at the Enlish language portal in Wikipedia, I went to the Spanish language section of Wikipedia to do an edit at a talk page. I noticed that instead of my new user signature, my IP was stamped as a sig. Can you guys replace my IP with my sig.? I'm concerned that my IP might be harvested. --- I've also done some edits in the past. Is it possible to change my IP automatically to my new User sig.?

Thanks.

It's not possible to retroactively change or delete signatures or other content. I don't know why it would be printing your IP though - are you sure you were logged in? I'd just go back to the relevant pages, edit your IP out and add your sig. Note too that I can't really think of any danger of "IP harvesting" - though I might be wrong. --Wooty  Woot? | contribs 05:29, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's because each Wikipedia language has its own registration system. You have to register separately there. Don't be afraid about your IP address being "harvested". Every website you visit grabs your IP address, and people can set programs to scan large swathes of addresses looking for computers. You're not any more vulnerable by having your IP address here. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 05:31, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
• Each Wikipedia is their own entity rather than a lanaguage "section". You need to register for each one separately until the single login has been created. That's why your username wasn't showing. - Mgm|(talk) 09:45, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you all for your quick responses. I guess that I'll just have to make sure that I'm logged in each time I go from one language to the other. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eltenoch (talkcontribs)

Question about photos

I have read the image policy guidelines, but I still have a question about a specific photo. The article 'Donna Williams' has no photo. Now,I know of someone who took a photo of Donna at a Neopets promotion event in Singapore a while ago,in 2003.Is this photo able to be used if I ask permission from the original photographer? Sorry if I have missed a part in the policy that would answer my question, but I'd like to know for sure. Serenaacw 08:11, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Only if the original photographer is willing to release it into the public domain fully - it can't be specific to Wikipedia. Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags#For_image_creators should explain how that is done. Trebor 08:29, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, is there a way to create a wiki link with the linked word containing square brackets? Ie. if I want to link the word [foobar] to some page, how do I do that so that the square brackets show up in the link? --Jopo 12:47, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Theoretically, one can use the hexadecimal ASCII value with % in front. For example, [ is %5b and ] is %5d, so linking to [foobar] should work as %5bfoobar%5d. It doesn't seem to be working and I don't know why... There's always an external link.... --Keitei (talk) 13:04, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To make a link to say, A, written as [A], you type [[A|[A]]]. So you want [foobar] to link to Wikipedia, you type
[[Wikipedia|[foobar]]]

Publication on Wikipedia

Sorry for my poor english but I try to explain my problem.

I try to post an article about PLANIGO such as that of VENERE article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venere)

Unfortunately, my article is always refused. Thank you communicate me the reason.

Thanks

Franck Viano www.planigo.com

COPY OF MY ARTICLE

Planigo.com is an online hotel reservation platform based in Switzerland with many offices in Europe: France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Monaco, Germany, Romania, etc.

With more than 11 500 hotels, Planigo proposes an exhaustive choice of hotels (hotels of 1 to 5 stars, palaces, castle residences, chalets, etc) displayed in over 23 languages, thus allowing its users to compare the hotel offers in their native language.

Moreover, Planigo publishes in 15 languages the opinions of its customers having stayed in the hotels. Therefore, every net surfer is able to refer to these opinions in order to have a clearer idea about the establishment in question.

Corporate

Established in 1998 by Gil Guyomard, Planigo started in France as a hotel booking website known under FranceHotelReservation.com. Today, less than 10 years later, Planigo is positioned as a leading player on the European market and is registered as a trademark.

Planigo.com is part of the international group QCNS. While the head office is based in Switzerland, the operational headquarters is located in Romania which includes the Call Centre, the technology departments and the administrative offices. QCNS also owns two travel agencies (Aeromar Travel Agencies), one located in Monaco, and the second in France, Beausoleil.

Business model

Thanks to its large portfolio of hotels under contract, Planigo has set up a savvy business model, managing the whole reservation process including the booking itself, but also the billing.

For one, your article sounds too much like an advertisement. Also, the company may not live up to the requirements for notability for a company which are spelled out at WP:CORP. Dismas|(talk) 13:43, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Identification of nationals of non-sovereign peoples

Is a nationality belonging to a non-sovereign people worthy of removal in the introduction paragraph of a biography article? Can Scottish, Tibetan, Mohawk, Porto Rican people be identified as such, or must we all accept forceful replacements to British, Chinese, etc.? I feel like these are sociological realities that transgress the official political structures and documents. If one waits for the powers that be to reflect faithfully the reality of the people, one will wait a while. What do you think? --Liberlogos 16:57, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there's a style guideline or policy regarding this, so it's something that should be handled on a per article basis. I think the most important thing is what the person in question identifies himself as. For example, the Dalai Lama would certainly identify himself as a Tibetan, as he's trying to achieve it's independence. That perhaps the most important thing to consider when identifying a national status. —Mitaphane talk 21:11, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I find common templates to welcome or warn new users?

Question 1: I know there are templates created that can be placed on the talk page of a brand-new user, saying "Welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for editing - we appreciate your contribution, but in your future edits please be more careful regarding spelling/grammar/POV/etc." or something to that effect.

But I can't seem to find where these templates are located. I expected they would be included in, or referenced on, the "please do not bite the newcomers" page, but I didn't see any links/references there. I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

Question 2: I am interested in assisting with "recent changes patrolling" and when I looked at the RPP page, it mentioned the "old school" way of finding recent changes, but didn't actually explain how to see a list of the most recent changes. If someone could give me some guidance on the easiest/most efficient way to look at recent changes, I'd appreciate it. —SaxTeacher (talk) 16:05, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found some answers myself: welcome is the standard greeting; alternative greetings are found at Wikipedia:Standard_user_greeting and Wikipedia:Welcome templates. —SaxTeacher (talk) 16:31, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
(1) I don't know if it's exhaustive but there's quite a list at WP:UTM. (2) The easiest way to see a list of recent changes is to visit Special:Recentchanges. Depending on your display preferences, there's probably a link to it at the left of your screen, labeled as "Recent changes". There are also various tools for monitoring recent changes in real time, but Special:Recentchanges is a good place to get started. FreplySpang 16:33, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Revert problem

I'm trying to revert changes to Trippin'_On_a_Hole_in_a_Paper_Heart due to copyright violation (song lyrics in article), but I think I may have messed up. I'd removed the lyrics manually as a normal edit, but later I noted they still show up in the article history. I then tried to follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Revert, but the copyrighted material is still in the history. Is this the case, that article revisions cannot be purged from the history? Or could someone more wiki-savvy fix this article, and maybe post back here telling me what I should have done instead? Thanks. 158.140.1.25 16:52, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at Wikipedia:Copyright violations on history pages. The consensus was that they do not need to be removed from the history unless a specific complaint is made. Trebor 17:22, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the only people who can remove article revisions are administrators; all other edits remain in the history. Should entire credits be listed for TV series, films, etc?

I don't mean the cast or the main crew, but the minor crew members such as electricians, boom operators, etc. I've seen quite a few articles that list every onscreen credit, but often the credit list takes up three-quarters of the entire article. I'd delete the minor crew but I don't know what the general style is on Wikipedia. 172.206.2.54 20:27, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

• They're not quite minor. Those films would've been different without them working on them, but I agree, you generally mention director, producer and major actors. People in Special FX and things like that should only be mentioned if you have something to tell about them. I would hate to see an article titled Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix credits and I would hate to see them in the movie article even more. - Mgm|(talk) 22:53, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think it would be a good idea to create an article about the 100,000th active user (like similar rules of the millionth article pool such as guessing and the deadline where you can't make any guesses).--PrestonH 22:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More contests! — Deon555talk 23:04, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, here are some policies I think up for the contest...
• In order for a user to become active, users must make at least 5 edits a month.
• The contest will end if there are 95,000 active users.
• Any guesses after the deadline will be reverted.
• Guesses can be divided by month and year for categorization.
• The person who guessed the right month of the 100,000th active user will be the winner (and maybe a barnstar)

We might want to delay the contest because the Wikimedia Statistics are not working. So should I create an article about this contest?--PrestonH 23:29, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit does not show up in my watchlist

Here's something odd: I edited a page that is on my watchlist, but the edit does not show up on the watchlist. (I don't have "Hide my edits" or "Hide minor edits" set, or anything like that.) I looked at the contents of my watchlist ("display and edit the complete list"), and the page is there. I looked at the page itself, and my edit is in the page itself, and in the history, and the watch/unwatch tab says "unwatch", indicating the page is currently being watched. I reloaded my watchlist several times. I edited other watched pages, and they showed up. But not the mystery edit. So then I clicked "unwatch" on the page, and got the expected result. I then clicked "watch", and got the expected result. Back to my watchlist... my edit is still not there. The watchlist function does not appear to use the server cache (it's generated on the fly), so I can't purge the cache. Ideas? --MCB 00:50, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does the history of the article confirm that you made the edit? Also, if you revert an article to get rid of vandalism at the same time as another editor and their edit hits the system first, you won't get credit for that edit. Could that be it? Dismas|(talk) 00:52, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It shows up in the history, and in the page itself, and wasn't a revert, and no one else edited the page around the time I did. The page has been edited further, and the latest of those edits show up in my watchlist. On further analysis, I think I might have a clue: I made this edit, which was adding sprotected to a page, and then immediately performed the sprotection itself, which is an admin action rather than an edit, but it shows up in the history as a minor edit through the workings of the software. The latter may just not show up in a watchlist correctly, so I'll see if it happens again, and file a bug report if it does. Thanks for responding and if anyone else has any ideas, please post! Thanks, --MCB 02:42, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is an informal fan poll usable?

A user and I are in conflict (and we do have an RFC in place) regarding the spelling of one Rainbow Brite character's name - Moonglo vs. Moonglow. Although the article currently notes that the TV series spells it Moonglo and the merchandise line uses Moonglow, the user wants to change the article to read that fans use Moonglo most often. Personally, on fan sites, I've seen them used pretty equally. Well, apparently this user is taking a poll at a fan forum and wants to use it as citable proof that Moonglo should be used. My concern is that a fan poll is not a concrete citation - what if this week one spelling wins, but next week more users vote and another spelling wins? Furthermore, there are other fan sites in existence, and said user is only giving fans at one particular site the chance to vote, which would be a problem with a poll on any subject - only a limited number of people interested in the issue will have voted. What is official policy regarding polls? Kat, Queen of Typos 00:59, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Polls on websites are neither verifiable nor scholarly, and they're original research. Therefore, don't use them. --Wooty  Woot? | contribs 01:16, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
• Discussions regarding editing Wikipedia articles should best be kept on the article's talk page (including polling, in order to directly allow all Wikipedia users to know what are the article's debates or issues). As far as policy regarding voting, Wikipedia is based on the consensus of users, however, a citation linking to a poll that was deliberated on a fan forum is as you stated considered "not concrete." Admins or Wikipedia employees do not determine the information that is required to reflect or not reflect in an article. All they can do is add editing tags stating the article requires citations regarding its info, the article is disputed for its neutrality, etc. (the only exception to removing content immediately is when it is regarded as vandalism).¤~Persian Poet Gal (talk) 01:18, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

proposed merge between wood engraving & woodcut (WE & W)

This is about printmaking. Proposed merger tags were put on these two some months ago. The one on W has been removed now - don't know when. The W talk page there appears to have been cleared, or never had anything, but on the WE talk page there are numerous commentas against the merge, the last (before mine today) in May 06.

I feel I have sorted the problem in WE, which was that the 1911 text also covered W, which everybody agrees is a different technique. The merge tag should now be taken off, I think, but I don't like to do it myself & have not found the correct procedure in a search.

Please advise if I can/should just do it, or alternatively forward this to the correct administrator. Or should it be left for a period? Thanks Johnbod 02:19, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At Wikipedia:Merge it is stated: "If there is a clear agreement after two weeks that the articles should be merged, then go ahead and merge them. If there is no response after four weeks then go ahead and merge the articles." Nothing covering you situation exactly, but I think we can read into this the negative implication, that where there is opposition and no response after a few weeks, "go ahead and remove the tag. We also operate by consensus. Since there appears to be consensus not to merge, go ahead and remove the tag. Finally, if someone adds a tag such as this one which appears to me to be simply incorrect in its goal, you can be bold and remove the tag.--Fuhghettaboutit 02:33, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How can I get Wikipedia info into my own files?

That is to say, I'd like to have a Wiki that's akin to Google Notebook, as though it were a combination of the two. So, if I wanted to look over information I've found on wikepedia about, say, "Tantric Sex," "The Matrix," and "Reservoir Dogs," and put it all on a page, how could I do that?

Notices on User talk pages

Hi, I've started using class="usermessage" on my talk page for notices. It stands out nicely, but I'm a little worried about people clicking on it, instinctively reacting as if it were about a new message on their talk page. Is there an alternative CSS class that I can use instead? Thank you. --Kjoonlee 06:14, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Confused about deleting an article.

Hello there, I recently tagged the article Asher Tarivona Mutsengi for deletion because I felt it was an autobiography (the user who created the article had a username very similar to the article title). It could, however, be an attempt to create a user page. Recently I looked at the article and saw it was flagged for speedy deletion by an anonymous user. The reason given was because the user requested deletion of his userpage. Obviously, it isn't a userpage at all. This is my first time attempting to delete an article. Should I remove the speedy deletion tag or should I leave it be until an admin can sort it out? Thank you very much Vvitor 08:27, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If a speedy-delete tag is obviously wrong and you didn't create the page yourself, feel free to remove it. --ais523 08:33, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

I cannot figure out how to get to the page that I can create. I would like to create an aricle and not edit it. I read your FAQS, but I do not see anything on how I actually get to the page that I can create.

Is there anywhere to object a vandalism-warning?

I just edited a page and just then I received a warning saying I was doing vandalism. I don't understand at all and I found nowhere to object. I really need the admin to answer me why my editing is considered as vandalism. Please tell me where to object. Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.166.227.235 (talkcontribs)

If your IP address changes all the time then you will get the occasional message that was not intended for you but rather for someone else. --WikiSlasher 12:41, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please bear in mind too that anyone can and may issue vandalism warnings, not just administrators. It is not a formal thing, but you can note your objections to the label on your talk page. Best of all, though, is to engage in discussion on the article's talk page about your proposed edits. The warning you are commenting on referred to this edit [2], which deleted much of the article, and would certainly be called vandalism. If you didn't make this change, all the more reason for you to get an account, so you don't get mixed up with vandals. Notinasnaid 17:40, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the "new message" box appearence

Hello.

Whenever I receive a new message, an orange and intrusive box appears on the top of every page I am watching, until I read my talk page.

I would like change the box appearence, for example reducing it and changing its colour (which is really annoying). It would be even better to change its position, for example having the "my talk" link (the one close to "my preferences" link) underlined/coloured/else.

Is this possible?

images/fair use/copyright

I've read through the fair use and copyright guides, as well as the general info on uploading images and external linking, but I'm still a bit vague. What should I do in the following case?

I edited Neutral Milk Hotel to correct a mistake about a band pseudonym, and linked to an image (gig poster) which supported the correction in the external links. Should I have uploaded this? It's on the website of a NZ band and I've no idea why or what kind of copyright applies to it (obviously someone designed it so it will be copyrighted). Should it not even be linked or uploaded at all? Help!Tippling.philosopher 18:55, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image fair use guidelines basically say it's OK to upload a copyrighted image when there is no free-use alternative. Feel free to read up on WP:FU. However, you usually only want to include one fair-use image of the band at a time; or so goes my understanding. It's probably OK to have a link to a gallery of images, or to the page where the image is located, though. -Patstuart(talk)(contribs) 03:45, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can simply edit the article and add in your external links. However, I will warn you now that you must be VERY careful when adding links. We don't take spamming kindly, so make sure your links are relevant and that there is no hint of advertisement in them. Generally, links are only needed if there is information can cannot be covered in the article itself - otherwise, add it in and cite instead. If you're unsure, you can try posting on the talk page of the article with your suggsted link. Post here or let me know if you have any trouble. Good luck! —Keakealani 19:44, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators and WP:CSD

Not a new user, but I have a question: Can an administrator delete an article himself if he/she feels it meets CSD criteria? I'm talking about if nobody has nominated the article and the administrator just deletes it on his own instinct. Or does the article have to be nominated by someone other then the deletionist? - Tutmosis 19:39, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not an admin, so I can't tell you for sure, but I'm fairly positive that admins can delete articles without them first being nominated, if they're very obvious speedies. I'm sure there are at least a few admins who do new page patrol, and when I'm doing that I often get to articles which are already deleted - either they manage to get nominated and deleted within a few seconds or they were just deleted right off. —Keakealani 19:44, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There is no technical reason preventing it. For anything other than an obvious vandalism job, though, the community has a strong perference for the "one tags, one deletes" approach. Shimgray | talk | 19:52, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrighted material on user subpages

Here's a silly question. Say that I'm working on a brand new article, and it's going to take a while to write, and I have to compile from several sources. Is it ok to put copyrighted material (e.g. material from the website, from news artices) in a sandbox temporarily so that I can write the article? Or does that still constitute copyright infringement? If so, can I include all sources, and avoid that problem? tiZom(2¢) 22:45, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would advice against that, even though there is no specific guideline for a such a situation, it be best to avoid possible problems by not doing it. You can easily save the text onto your computer through a text editor and refer to it when ever you wish. - Tutmosis 22:51, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If an article at any point starts as a copyvio, even if it's changed eventually, it can still be labelled as a copyvio. If you're using the source just for reference, why not just keep a link in your sandbox? There's no reason to keep a direct copy of a website, and it would definitely raise red flags. Don't think there's a /rule/ against it, but I would strongly advise another method of referencing. —Keakealani 01:03, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article I printed off for a school paper -- need your help on this.

Hello, I need your help on a Research Methods Problem Statement paper I am writing and due to turn in next Wednesday, 11-15-06. I used the following article and put it under my reference page at the end. My teacher is helping me on my draft paper of this and sent the following information back to me to get help on. Here is the article and the question(s) that she wants me to answer & get back to her on. Here it is:

Article is: Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 -- this involved Pres. Bush signing this into law on 4-1-04 at the White House. It involved Laci Perterson & her unborn child, Conner, who were killed by her husband, Scott Peterson in 2002 and who is now on deeath row in San Quntion. And I thought this was all good and well and I was finished with this part.

Teacher is e-mailing me back asking me the following: Who is the Author & Year?

This is how I typed the cite under my references & she has this is red to correct & I don't know how to cite it any better, how?? (http://en.wikipedia.org./wiki/Unborn_Victims_of_Violence_Act) and that is what is being questioned. So do I used the web page cite off of the main page which is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)???

Please someone help me out so that I can finish up this Problem Statement Paper and turn it in for an "A" paper.

I just need to know what I did wrong if at all because I usually cite web pages correctly all the time.

Thanks again and e-mail me back at: [redacted to prevent spam] Sincerely, Mrs. P H [redacted].

This seems like something that might be more appropriate for the Reference Desk, as I don't think anyone here speaks Korean. I can also suggest that you use a search engine like Google to locate a name translator, although those are notoriously inaccurate. Need redirect help

I made a mistake creating a redirect and can't seem to rectify it. . . .

I had created an article with the title "Tosca Kramer". I wanted redirects from "Tosca Berger" and from "Tosca Berger Kramer". I successfully created the redirect link from "Tosca Berger Kramer" to "Tosca Kramer", but at "Tosca Berger" I accidentally typed "Tosca Berger Kramer" instead of "Tosca Kramer" after the REDIRECT command--which I discovered upon testing the link by typing "Tosca Berger" in the search box. So--I used the back button to get back to the "Tosca Berger"edit box; changed the redirect to "Tosca Kramer"; and saved it. But the redirect still doesn't work: it still just goes to a page that says: Redirect page |

–> Tosca Berger Kramer.

Sorry this is wordy and confusing. In short, what I'm asking is that: When you type "Tosca Berger" in the search box, it should redirect to "Tosca Kramer".

It seems to be working alright now. You might need to clear out your cache (if you can't figure that out, just restart your browser) But for future reference, at the top of the page, you'll see a small text saying "redirected from [redirected page]". IPA for names?

I'm considering adding an IPA representation of "Yankovic" to the "Weird Al" Yankovic article, but I'm afraid it'll come off as too patronising towards those who mispronounce it as "Yankovich". What is Wikipedia's policy (if any) on IPA for people's names? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gromreaper (talkcontribs)

I'm not aware of a specific policy, but you can probably feel free to add it. You're right; the name is often pronounced differently, but, if you can provide a reliable source saying that "Yankovich" is wrong (shame on, you, Pat, for pronouncing it that way!), then it's relevant. If someone else has a problem, they'll probably remove it, and you can discuss it on the talk page. -Patstuart(talk)(contribs) 03:54, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If there is a name that is easy to mispronounce (especially if it's derived from a foreign tongue), I think it would be great to have the IPA for it. If people pronounce it wrong, chances are they don't care enough to look it up and try to read the IPA, but it would be a good reference especially for non-native-english-speaking Wikipedia users. And actually, that's a fantastic idea to add to Hawaiian names... —Keakealani 06:54, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DRV Archives for February 2006

Hi there - am considering proposing an article for deletion; however, when I did so, I found that this was the second AfD; the first one, surprisingly, was ruled a "delete" back in early February 2006. Seems the article was recreated in October 2006. Before completing the 2nd AfD, I thought it prudent to ensure that it had not gone to DRV and been ruled a "keep". Unfortunately, when looking at DRV, the oldest archives I find are April 2006; the DRV was probably earlier than that, if there was one. So...the question is...how, or where can I find the DRV archives prior to April 2006? Thanks Risker 06:42, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I only use Linky to open selected links in tabs; I've disabled all the other features. --Kjoonlee 08:12, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inline citation density

It isn't clear to me how much documentation of sources is considered proper in a WP article. For instance, Diego Velázquez is my idea of an excellent article, and others must agree since it's a featured article, but it has no inline citations at all. In view of the fact that there is a list of resources at the bottom of the page, is the absence of inline cites a serious problem? By contrast, Edgar Degas was teeming with so many citations (supporting uncontroversial biographical facts) that it was nearly unreadable, so I took half of 'em out the other day, using discretion to keep any that seemed useful. I guess the question is: If a list of books used as sources is given, and the article contains no quotes or stunning affronts to conventional wisdom, is a lack (or sparseness) of inline citations a serious problem? Ewulp 08:01, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to have it on the mark for what is and is not a needed citation. If you have a bunch of useless footnotes asserting a well-known fact (can you imagine "Apple pie is made with apples. [1][2][3][4][5]"?) then it needs some pruning or a better way to cite sources. On the other hand, if there is a specific controversial fact, quote, or statistic that would be hard to find other than from a specific source, inline ciations are a must. I personally think that a few inline citaions are good in every article, but it depends a lot on context. For some, the information is simply reiterated in several books but specific facts are just put in a conglomeration. In that case, notes at the end will suffice. Okay, so I guess I'm rambling a bit. It's a matter of opinion and consensus, and there is no specific guideline saying one kind of citation is better than another. —Keakealani 08:59, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks! Ewulp 09:48, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Keep in mind that Diego Velázquez was featured a while ago, possibly even before inline citations were possible. Wikipedia:Citations could be of interest.--Commander Keane 10:42, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help with speedy tag

Can someone help me fix the speedy tag I placed here. I hate how bloody difficult all those tags are :( --Charlesknight 10:24, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it - you don't need to subst speedy deletion tags. --WikiSlasher 10:26, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See this is part of the problem - I don't even understand what "Subst" means, I've read about it but I'm still none the wiser. (thanks for fixing it by the way). --Charlesknight 10:28, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:SUBST. I don't know how you could have substed it without already knowing about subst (since to subst db-g4 for example you need to type . Basically substing it makes the software include the contents of the template rather than the template itself in the pages code. --WikiSlasher 11:49, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Numbered lists...

It would be awesome if I could start a numbered list from 0. Is there a way to do this or maybe I must 'fake' the list?

Hello. I recentl created an article entitled "Amour d'enfants", about a 2006 Lebanese romantic comedy. But when I type "Amour d'enfants" in Google or Yahoo servers for instance, the Wikipedia page doesn't appear in the results page. Why? Thanks a lot Sarah
