Reference 114 needs the access date (3rd January 2019) and the IBSN number as it is a book. Please fix if you can. Thanks 175.33.45.21 (talk) 01:49, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ISBNs date from 1965. Ref 114 is a 1914 publication, so unlikely to have been issued a number. In general, book refs do not need access-date since, unlike online sources, they are presumed to remain unchanged from year to year; the purpose of access-date is to say 'on this date, this source served as a reference for this assertion'. So, no fixes needed. Also, maybe take a look at Template:Cite book as a starter-for-ten in learning how to fix issues yourself. It's not very hard; study of the many refs on that page should be enough to guide you? --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:56, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a file of West Riding Court on this page in "Grandparents of Michael Middleton" section. Please place a DIRECT link to Frank (Francis Martineau Lupton) on the Lupton family page - Francis's name is under the old West Riding Court photo that I just added. Why does my reference appear in blue?

Until today, I always used the {{cite}} templates for my citations. Since they don't have a part= parameter, though, I ventured to create a citation, #6 in Quotation marks in English, without a template. Its text is as I intended, but it has a light blue background. How do I correct this? Peter Brown (talk) 03:58, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How are you accessing the reference? Whenever a reference is accessed from its superscript number in the textbody, it will be highlighted in a light blue background. Is that what you mean? –Ammarpad (talk) 04:48, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Peter Brown There's nothing wrong with the citation. All links are shown in blue font, and external links to other websites appear in a slightly paler blue than wikilinks to other Wikipedia articles (at least in Monobook skin). As Ammarpad says, if you click on the reference index (here, "6") in the text of the article, the screen display jumps to the reference list, and the reference you selected is highlighted in blue for ease of picking it out. The highlighting is not present for other readers, nor for you next time you return to the article: Bhunacat10 (talk), 09:33, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help with publishing David Mobley (entrepreneur) wiki article

    Hello fellow Wikipedians,

My username is Ihelptocontribute. Can someone help a fellow Wikipedian to view the Edit History for the David Mobley (entrepreneur) Wiki to understand why my revisions were reverted back by another Wiki user? The Wiki user Praxidicae did not provide an explanation, and I have reached out to this Wiki user on their talk page, in which my question was quickly deleted. I reached out in the David Mobley (entrepreneur) Wiki talk page and haven't received a reply from the Wiki user also. Can someone help to to finalize the revisions for this article so it can be published for viewing, or help me to understand what needs to be revised so this article can be completed for viewing?

Ihelptocontribute — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ihelptocontribute (talkcontribs) 13:17, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ihelptocontribute, looking over that edit, I understand why Praxidicae reverted it.
    1. That is a major change in the article's focus. Prior to that edit, the article focused on his music career, which is probably what most people reading the article are interested in learning about. After that edit, the article focused on his air freshener business, with his music career seeming like an afterthought.
    2. The "career" section of your version reads like an advertisement in places, with phrases like "Wonder Wafers Air Fresheners are the first of it's kind, air activated air fresheners, meaning they don't need to be sprayed, plugged in, or lit with a flame," and, "Wonder Wafers Air Fresheners and Super Wonder Wafers Air Fresheners can be found in automotive stores, convenience stores such as Circle K, car washes, dealerships, hotels, retail stores, and truck stops."
    3. Although you cited a number of sources in the "Career" section, most of them do not meet our reliable source and independent source guidelines. You've cited a number of primary sources in the form of the actual patents for the products, and you've also cited the company's website and marketing materials frequently. While some use of a company's website or primary sources is ok, it's best to have the bulk of the content be sourced from reliable secondary sources.
    4. The placement of your references does not make clear which source supports what content. You do not make good use of inline citations to specifically associate bits of information with their sources, rather you lump a bunch of citations together at the end of several un-cited paragraphs.
    5. The focus of the article before your edits was on his music career. The "Music career" section after your edit was much shorter than the previous article, leaving out all the information about how "Mobley has been in the business and entertainment industry since 1970" and "Crosswindz recorded their first album titled "High Park" in 1972." Moreover, just like in the section about the air freshener, your edits sound promotional, with phrases like, "David first discovered the joy of music when The Beatles took the stage on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964," and "David and Cliff released future albums, and are still best friends to this day."
    6. The addition of a discography section is a helpful addition to the article, but the Music Videos, Awards and Achievements, and Online Radio sections are all unsourced. I also am not clear what information the Online Radio section is even trying to convey.
    7. The Philanthropy section is extremely vague. Why even include it if that's all you can say about his philanthropic endevors?
Ultimately, your edit wasn't all bad. If his involvement in the air freshener business is really that signifigant, the article should include more about it than was there before. Likewise the addition of some of the other sections you added is a useful additon and better than the wall of text that was the second paragraph of the Career section before. However, the complete change in article focus, the promotional tone of what you added, and the poor sourcing mean it was entirely reasonable for Praxidicae to revert your edit. Although I agree you deserved an explanation. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 13:54, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If I were you; I'd take a major revision of an article like that much, much slower. I do think that article needs major revision and expansion. I'd start by breaking the second paragraph of the article up into a prose section and a discography. Then I'd wait a day or two and add a section on the air freshener businesess. Keep that section succinct, well-sourced, and avoid promotional language. Then wait a a day or two and start adding more information sourced to reliable secondary sources. Avoid using the article about David Mobley as a coatrack upon which to hang an advertisement for his air freshener business. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:03, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@ONUnicorn: The way you used the link to SHOEHORN page (and the context!) suggest it should clarify something. Alas, a non-exiting page clarifies nothing... --CiaPan (talk) 14:14, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Simply use your contribution history from oldest with a limit equals to the Nth edit you're looking for.
For example, the first line of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&dir=prev&limit=1000&contribs=user&target=JackintheBox&namespace=0 is your 1000th edit in the main (Article) namespace.

    Book creator

    Hello,

I see the Wikipedia PDF book creator has been in development for some time now. I am starting to wonder about Wikipedia's intentions. I have a few questions about why it's taking so long, or maybe if they are ever going to go back to a book creator (adding or combining many wiki pages into one PDF).

Will Wikipedia be using PediaPress from now on? Or was this only temporary until the book creator is finished? Will Wikipedia be getting rid of PediaPress once the book creator is finished? When will the book creator be complete? Does Wikipedia intend to leave it as it is now, or finish the book creator? Will there be a charge for using the book creator?

    Thank you,

    Geoffrey — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.73.35.238 (talk) 20:07, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is an update page here. According to it, as of August, they are working with PediaPress on the PDF book creator software, it seems there are some glitches they are working out. The talk page has current discussions from as recently as today, so if you ask your questions there they'll probably get a better response than here. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 21:08, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Photo edits and text edits

Hello, I have been trying to edit the sivananda yoga page but have now been blocked. I work for the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres and we wished to put the proper content on this page to correctly show what sivananda yoga is. We came to realize that we could not upload new photos until making 10 edits/changes and waiting the necessary time to confirm our account. We began making edits but the edits continued to be undone even after we tried also inserting cites and links throughout the text. Is there any way we can atleast change the photos to properly show our postures? How can we get de-blocked from editing? And how can we be blocked to begin with when all the information we are trying to provide is coming straight from the origin of this page/the business it belongs to? Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SivanandaCanada (talkcontribs) 20:25, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@SivanandaCanada: Your edits were reverted for being promotional; Wikipedia articles must be written from a neutral point of view. In addition, you are mistaken if you think the article belongs to Sivananda; on the contrary it is Wikipedia's article about Sivananda yoga. Because of conflict of interest which your username indicates, you are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly, but feel free to request changes on the article talk page. —teb728 t c 21:08, 3 January 2019 (UTC) Oh, and you have not (yet) been blocked from editing, but you have been warned that you will be blocked if you continue editing promotionally. —teb728 t c 21:11, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The other thing you should be aware of is the need for articles to be based as far as possible on sources independent of their subject: your earlier edits removed some of the citations that were there before. Your statement all the information we are trying to provide is coming straight from ... the business it belongs to is unfortunately counter to the way we work in Wikipedia. Section headings such as "Our teachings" are not acceptable; this is an encyclopedia and not an extension of your organisation's website. The aim is to provide readers with neutrally expressed, independently verifiable information, putting them in a position to make up their own minds about the value of organisations, teachings, methods or philosophies covered: Bhunacat10 (talk), 21:16, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Uploading a Certain Image

I am trying to upload a certain image found here or here for an article on Wikipedia that I'm trying to make about the video game. I'm unsure if it is alright to use this image as it does not clearly state anywhere if the image is copyrighted. Other articles about games do use title images but I am unaware if permission was required to use them. One unlicensed image is typically allowed in the infobox of a published game article (not a draft like your sandbox) to visually identify the subject. —teb728 t c 22:41, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

After earlier discussion, and some more recent attempts to start a discussion on how best to reduce the size of Syrian Civil War, I have started the process of moving all relevant extra info, not already contained in the Timeline section of that article to Timeline of the Syrian Civil War. I haven't done one of the Copied templates before and not sure how to express that this is just the start of a process, which will be complete when the whole section is finished. @MVSujata: If you look at the history of the Pune article, you will see that your 2 edits were reverted; you can see that the reverting users were David Biddulph and Jonathansammy. The first revert (before you added a ref) had the edit summary, "rv unsourced"; the second revert had the edit summary, "mostly unsourced. The other content also not from a reliable source." —teb728 t c 06:48, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, MVSujata. Now that you have had it explained what happened, you should continue the discussion at Talk:Pune, rather than here. Generally it is a bad idea to reapply a reverted edit without discussing it first - if you are adding a new source, it is not technically edit warring, but it's usually still best to discuss it.
Just because a source is already cited in an article does not mean that anybody has necessarily looked at it critically and decided that it is acceptable. "Other stuff exists" is not a good basis for adding new material (this is usually invoked in respect of whole articles, but the same principle applies). Perhaps somebody should be replacing those existing citations with better sources.
Finally, please sign you postings on talk and discussion pages, with four tildes (~~~~). --ColinFine (talk) 12:06, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response @ColinFine. Got the point. About discussion on talk- I am not sure how to proceed on it hence chatting here. About the article and source - unfortunately for this information there isn't a lot of written information available as these are historic and not very well documented. The sources that I have mentioned has been created by people who 'know' through some or the other literature (hard copies) or other sources. So while I have spent hours to search for another best source I do not have it. So either we can decide to delete the information or keep it as I am very confident it is correct. I will let you take the final call here. But this is a good info to add in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MVSujata (talkcontribs) 12:13, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sources don't have to be online, MVSujata. As long as they have been published by a reliable publisher, so that a reader could in principle get hold of them (eg through a major library), that is enough. Please see REFB.. --ColinFine (talk) 15:39, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding my recent editing about Albert ekka's death location

Dear Sir/Mam Albert Ekka died in the battle of Hilli to protect Gangasagar Railway Station and also to fight for country against Pakistan forces. This Gangasagar which is 6km away from agartala is now in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and not to be confused with Gangasagar in West bengal.. Kindly look into it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tanujit91 (talkcontribs) 03:46, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, you seem to be apparently right. I've redirected the Gangasagar details mentioned in the said article to Brahmanbaria District, which lists the Gangasagar Railway station in Bangladesh. Lourdes 07:08, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Golfpecks256: If you have a draft already, you can just "move" it to mainspace. See WP:MOVE for more information, or I can move it for you. If you don't, I suggest you write a draft first. --DannyS712 (talk) 06:26, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    Golfpecks256, please read WP:Your first article first. Thanks, Lourdes 06:58, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If this issue is about Draft:Foundation for a Humanitarian Based Economy, then K.e.coffman and other editors have already given you inputs on why the organization is not notable to be included in Wikipedia. Read their messages carefully and understand why organizations have to qualify on our organization notability guidelines to be included in Wikipedia. The article was deleted after a discussion. The differential equation is well-known of course, but the claim that it belongs to Nurgaliev is not substantiated. I suppose anyone can add their name to a well-known law, but unless other people use the name for the law, they don't get a Wikipedia article. Dbfirs 17:57, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Some wikipedia articles retrieved via API do not return the wikidata item id

See for example Paul Niedermann, whose wikidata item is correctly linked, but the relevant query shows no sign of it. See this query about John Wayne for the correct expected value.

Other examples of malfunctioning are Nicolas Ghosn, Thomas Thennatt, Walter Artizala, Giorgio Degola, José Lorenzo Sartori. • REDGOLPE (TALK) 20:12, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    You should ask at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). Ruslik_Zero 20:58, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
None of the examples have been edited since they were added to the Wikidata item, except Walter Artizala which has not been edited since it was moved to the current title. Nicolas Ghosn was fixed by a null edit (a purge had no effect). I have not null edited the others in case somebody wants to examine them. phab:T56882 ("wikibase_item missing for some results of prop=pageprops") was closed in 2015 with the comment: "A null edit should fix this. In this case we can't do much about it and I'll close this. Please reopen if a null edit does not fix it for you." PrimeHunter (talk) 21:10, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Null edits seem to work, thanks for the suggestion. • REDGOLPE (TALK) 21:31, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref too many keys

I don't know to to make or suggest changes.

My comments on the entry for Charles's law are as follows.

Calling the law of Gay-Lussac Charles's law or the law of Charles and Gay-Lussac is an abomination. Charles deserves no credit at all for this law. Charles published nothing. Charles wrote to Gay-Lussac and expressed an opinion. Gay-Lussac made the mistake of mentioning this in a footnote. Gay-Lussac did not credit Charles with a law.

    Please read

W.J. Lyons, 1938 Inaccuracies in the textbook discussions of the ordinary gas laws, American Journal of Physics, 6, 256-59.

Please read the entry on Charles in the Dictionary of Scientific Biography

To comment on the content of a specific article we use the talk page of that article, in this instance Talk:Charles's law. Discussion is welcome there, but we never place comments within an article itself, as this might confuse readers: Bhunacat10 (talk), 21:38, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I've reverted your edits because opinion belongs on the talk pages of the relevant articles. You need to discuss your proposed changes there. Please read WP:Commonname for Wikipedia policy on naming articles. Dbfirs 21:42, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Substitution name "Erg Chigaga" into "Erg Chegaga"

Hello, I am contributing to the page Erg Chigaga [[1]] having visited this desert in Morocco several times for exploration and fineart photography. In so many places, and moreover the people who live and work there, call and write the name of this Erg "Chegaga". In some guides is written Chigaga, but local people say that this name is not correct. I propose to the members of this Help Desk to Change the name and link of the page from: Erg_Chigaga

    to Erg Chegaga

New link should be: Erg Chegaga [[2]]

Of course in the page will be mentioned also the second name (Erg Chigaga) due to the presence and circulation of some mistakes, done in past by some people. In this moment it's the opposite. I have two local maps, painted by nomad people living in M'Hamid el Ghizlane, that confirm this position. A contribution with an image from a previous user, was done using the name "Erg Chegaga" too !

    Kind Regards.

How to add an internet only radio station?

Please let me know how to add an internet only radio station to your internet only radio station list? Can anyone help me with this? Thank you

First, create a Wikipedia article about the station in the usual manner. Once it has been accepted as an article, you can add the article's name to the list and Wikilink it by adding double square brackets. You will notice that this list, like most on Wikipedia, only contains items (in this case stations) that have a Wikipedia article about them and are therefore, by definition, "Notable" in the special sense that Wikipedia uses the term. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.217.251.247 (talk) 22:38, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    January 6

Hi Folks, its that time again. On this page at Similarity system of triangles, I am trying to make the image bigger within the gallery, to a sizeable chunk each I think. There are quite small in size at the moment but I would like them bigger, so the detail can be seen. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 00:08, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Scope creep: I enlarged them with Widths= and Heights=, you can re-adjust them to any size if you want. –Ammarpad (talk) 07:02, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ammarpad: I think I had them at one point, but I must have spelt them wrong, or spelt one of them wrong. I couldnt get it. It is perfect now. Ideal size to see the text. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 10:02, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah... I think, you had them right at this revision but what made them not work was because you didn't define the mode= parameter before the vertical bar after opening <gallery. And here after you added the mode=, you also removed the widths in the same edit, and incidentally it was also needed for resizing to work effectively. You can read the documentation on MediaWiki for more options available. –Ammarpad (talk) 16:18, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ammarpad: Thats looks like better documentation that the other stuff I looked at. I'll bookmark it for later use. scope_creepTalk 16:28, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How do I use Wikipedia Visual Editor to change the color of table cells?

The question is as in the title. How do I use the Wikipedia Visual Editor to change the background color of cells within a table? Namely, I am trying to see how to use the Editor to change or apply colors (party shadings) to electoral results tables, such as the one found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_United_States_presidential_election_in_Alabama#Results_by_county. I am not sure whether or not the Visual Editor allows for one to do so. Any help with this would be appreciated. --The Empire of History (talk) 00:32, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@The Empire of History: Visual Editor has many limitations; and this is one of them. You cannot add that color shading with VE because it cannot parse the template that adds them properly. It must be done with the source editor. –Ammarpad (talk) 07:57, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If I do a Wikipedia search in the name Kraabel I get three hits but not A Thomas Kraabel when there is a good Wikipedia article on A Thomas Kraabel. Why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lokikraabel (talkcontribs) 05:13, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Lokikraabel: The page is at A. Thomas Kraabel. A search works for me with or without the punctuation, as does a Google search for the name as supplied by you. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 05:48, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Lokikraabel: If you enter "Kraabel" in Wikipedia's search box then it automatically goes directly to a page with exactly that name: Kraabel. This is not a search results page with hits but a manually edited wiki page. I have added A. Thomas Kraabel to it. You can do a search instead by entering "~Kraabel" in the search box. See more at Help:Searching. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:39, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Chernobyl 1986

is it possible to add information or reference a book written by Svetlana Alexievich " Voices from Chernobyl" the oral history of a Nuclear Disaster? the official estimates of death caused by Chernobyl are grossly underquoted ( from officials there) , according to the people who are interviewed in this book, which won a Nobel Prize. The world needs to hear these people. thank you Alison paice — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.127.109.232 (talk) 07:46, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Alison Paice. The place to discuss this is Talk:Chernobyl disaster. It is certainly possible that material could be added from that book, but we would need to be very careful about reliability: the book may very well be a reliable source for the fact that so-and-so said the figures were such-and-such, but not necessarily for the figure itself. I'm afraid that "the world needs to hear these people", while a laudable aim, is specifically not one of the purposes of Wikipedia: please see Righting great wrongs. --ColinFine (talk) 11:45, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"In December, 2018, Brian Dunning investigated the case and reported his findings on the Skeptoid podcast."

How is this statement consistent with the unacceptable date styles of WP? Thank you.2605:E000:9149:8300:2506:42B1:2001:39BA (talk) 08:21, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the comma after December if that was your point. —teb728 t c 08:31, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I can understand that but it seems that there are a few in WP that insist that how it was originally is the correct way which according to the table of unacceptable styles that is not what is represented. It seems that, and maybe it has something to do with using as an ID my IP address designate, that these unusual or obscure styles or policies seem to be advocated but are not reflected in WP. I just wanted to get a third party flow on this particular example as, and even within some WP articles, the two styles can be found. One person went to the trouble of saying that somehow everyone else that has written a day/month/year date style without a comma has done it wring although after I have reviewed "January 2019" that out of the 12,000 hits that came up there were less than 100 "January, 2019". Where ever this "January, 2019" style as being acceptable I could not find.2605:E000:9149:8300:2506:42B1:2001:39BA (talk) 11:08, 6 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
