I don't live on Cullen Ct, but I like the street sign

If you have any interest in editing Wikipedia by smartphone, I encourage you to read my essay, Smartphone editing. Thank you.

Welcome to my talk page I use the name Cullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Hello and welcome to my talk page. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the comments that follow from July and August of 2009 readily visible, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome here on Wikipedia when I first started editing. Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Debra and I made it to the summit of Mt. Whitney at 2:20 PM on Friday, September 11. Jim Heaphy (talk) 00:59, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding cover images

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your response. I fully agree with your rationale - but how do I "just do it"? I've gone to one of the image pages and tried to update the summary and licensing info (adapted from another album page from the same band), and was greeted with a rapid deletion message. The code I used was as follows:

Bay Area WikiSalon series kickoff, April 27

Please join us in San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism
Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

For further details, see here: Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon, April 2016

We hope to see you -- and until then, happy editing! - Pete, Ben & Wayne

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota

Hello Cullen328,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I notice you are active in activities related to project page and project talk page, so I wonder if I could invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you,

Bowen

Voluntary interaction ban

Hi Cullen. You recently requested Eeng stayed away from Cassianto (and vice versa). Could you request, in the same uncertain terms, the same between Eeng and I? A week or so ago he decided to mock a misspelling I made on NewYorkBrad's talk page. I told him I have mild dyslexia, and not to be puerile. Today he's been a pain in the arse about trying to mock another misspelling (see Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User: SchroCat), and edit warred to re-add it when several people have removed it and asked him not to add it. There's no good reason for him to be so obnoxious, and a ban on any interaction would be most welcome (two-way, obviously). Cheers – SchroCat (talk) 18:44, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, SchroCat. I see that EEng has been blocked. In the hope of not inflaming things, I will wait until the block has expired before discussing this matter with that editor. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:31, 29 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

Miscellaneous

  • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

May I post here material to get your judgment as regards my schools ban?

You warned me here to be cautious about editing the article on seminary training, and invited me to discuss the matter here. Could posting on this talk page what would be my addition to Optatam Totius to get your opinion on it, in itself be a violation of my ban? Jzsj (talk) 13:29, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, any edits to that article would be a violation of your topic ban. You can ask for clarification of the ban, but posting new content would be a violation. The key phrase is "broadly construed" and that definitely includes seminary education, Jzsj. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:26, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your quick reply. One more question, would translating [Guiseppe Alberigo] be a violation of my ban? Jzsj (talk) 15:30, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jzsj, in my opinion, translating that biography would be fine. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:46, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to name this article

Sorry for bothering you. I want to start an article about a murder (please see Wikipedia:Requested articles/Other#21 May 2006 A murder in Beijing). But I don't know how to name it. Do you have any idea? -- Thedarkknightli (talk) 09:50, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Thedarkknightli. The article should be named according to how English language sources describe the crime. I have my doubts that there should be an article unless this crime has received ongoing coverage over the years. While tragic, murders are relatively commonplace. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:11, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: Thanks. Well, I can't find any article about it in English on the Internet although many people have talked about it in China. There are many websites which have articles about it. But if the article shouldn't be created on Wikipedia, I'll give up. -- Thedarkknightli (talk) 17:59, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim: I followed a link on my watch list to this page and am very impressed to see your greeting. I just want you to know, that as I mature as an editor,I look back on our interactions, and have come to appreciate your advice and guidance, tough as it was at times. You have helped, it all helps, though I am still as feisty as ever, like the scorpion who stung the frog, it is my nature. book cover

Hi Jim

Thanks for letting me know that non free use rationales for book covers can only be used for articles, rather than for biographical articles about the author.

Are there any templates which cover book covers for biographical articles I could follow?

Thanks for any advice you can give. I already had one attempt at uploading the cover deleted :(

A multi user account

I don'tknow where to go with this, but it appears that this is a multi user account. It is humanely impossible for one person to be so active on any given day, it is professional and focused on N Korea/China. It is a new account that started about12 July 2019. and they are already at an edit level of proficiency that makes anyone envious, even creating an article (stub) that passed on it's first go, then nominating an article for GA. It appears to be a mainland China operation. Care to take a look, tell me if I am seeing things?Oldperson (talk) 16:53, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Oldperson. This editor's maximum monthly edit count is 651. I have had more edits per month than that many times over the years, sometimes over 1000 per month. I wrote my first new article within my first month of editing, and several more new articles in the weeks that followed. The account is quiet during normal sleep times and is not a 24 hour a day operation. This person has made a number of errors of the sort that might be expected of a new editor. They have been editing a very high profile article Xi Jinping without any major problems that I know of. The GA nomination failed. There is no prohibition on people from the People's Republic of China editing, and I notice that this editor also works on Japanese topics as well as Korean topics. Can you identify anything specifically problematic with the editor's work? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:18, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I have no problems. You have addressed my concerns. What grabbed my attention was the number of edits in a day, and over varied subjects. Apparently this is my problem. I am just not that swift, smart, educated, informed, maybe some jealousy. I knew that I could depend on your expertise, that's why I asked you. 2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

I agree with your comment that wikinews may be a failed project

I agree with your comment, at Wikipedia_talk:What_Wikipedia_is_not/Archive_56#The_acronym_WP:NOTNEWS_should_be_retired_for_"WP:NOTTRIVIALNEWS" that wikinews may be a failed project.

I didn't know its alexa score, so thanks for that.

I made a dozen or so good faith attempts to get articles published there. Some made it, but the process was extremely painful. Many didn't get published, and the drafts deleted. Generally, it seemed to me that an existing clique weren't making the effort to explain their rules; or, worse, were cryptically invoking wikinews-only rules that were not actually applicable. By the time one could get one of the members of the existing clique to explain themselves, or acknowledge that a tag was inappropriate, the article would be ruled stale.

One guy, a wikinews bureaucrat, threatened to block me, not for incivility, or a violation of their rules, but for asking too many questions.

I thought, back when I got the outrageous block threat, that the clique who didn't want newcomers to use wikinews resources, were risking the WMF deciding the project no longer measured up to the criteria for using WMF resources.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 22:06, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback, Geo Swan. The state of that project is very sad. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:00, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Are you an Admin, of what have you warned me ?

I have not even changed an article, just made suggestions. Please tell me what on earth I have done wrong. Please. Boeing720 (talk) 17:13, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(watching) WP:BLP is one of the most important policies we have, as you must know. So at a guess, I'd say the DS alert (which is not a warning, as it states quite baldly) was probably not unrelated to the portion of your remark which was subsequently redacted. Anyway: see wot C238 has to say. ——SN54129 17:21, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am an administrator, Boeing720. What you did wrong was make the comments that has to be redacted at Talk: Greta Thunberg. Please be aware that WP:BLP applies to every page everywhere on Wikipedia, not just to articles. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:58, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I still don't get it. I get our rules, it's not that. But I counted seven sentences - which one(s) do you think is WP:BLW ? It has to be crystal clear, so it won't happen again. If you could be so kind ? Boeing720 (talk) 19:11, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Is it related to this well known issue ? [2] ? Boeing720 (talk) 19:16, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Your derogatory speculations about Greta Thunberg's mental health and her father's political affiliations are the problem here, Boeing720. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 19:19, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But about her mental health - this is just what she has stated herself in Skavlan (Norwegian-Swedish TV), it's also mentioned by an other contributor above. I don't think I used "affiliation", but "run by Svante Thunberg". There's plenty of stuff on this issue in Sweden, this from Svenska Dagbladet is recommended for translation [3] (Why isn't Svante Thunberg honnest ?). I was not aware sources are required for talk-pages.

What will become of us (Wikipedians and others) if we no longer are allowed to speak the truth ? Boeing720 (talk) 19:53, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Boeing720, if you have reliable sources that call her father a "Communist", then bring them forward. It is a BLP violation to speculate about his political motivations without evidence. Using Google Translate, I find no evidence that he is a Communist in the article you linked to, and was unable to find evidence that he is a Communist through a Google search. Your description of her mental state was derogatory. Your personal speculations about these matters are not "the truth". You are not allowed to attack living people that way on Wikipedia. Your remarks were policy violations. End of story. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:07, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK it all comes down to the word "Communist" ? I haven't any source supporting that. That part was too hasty. Sorry. But simultaneously, why do I get the feeling that it's about something else ? Everything and everybody else might be discussed and criticized but not this issue. And by that I mean what I wrote about Svante running Greta. I think the dad is a very dangerous man, not at least to the poor and the less developed countries. All other environment issues are over-shadowed, and in the light of the Ozon-hole issue 15-25 years ago (which never is spoken of today), poor data to compare temperatures in the past with, we tend to forget all horrible local environment disasters around the world. I strongly feel the experts has to prove it isn't all bollocks again. At the same time as local pollution of both the atmosphere and the sea increases. For instance a British documentary on around 500 of the world's largest container ships are run on the extremely sulphurous fuel called bunker oil. One such ship pollutes more than 50 million cars (a 2017 documentary watched on Danish DR2 1,5 years ago). And all the western world "export" of mixed garbage - not to speak of how much unnecessary energy that's required for running Facebook and various streaming servers. Film and pictures take an enormous amount of space, which better had been stored on DVDs. But we must not fly ! All constructive environment debate appear to have vanished, very much thanks to Mr Thunberg, I can't help feeling.

Why do you have to speak every truth you happen to know, or believe, specifically on Wikipedia, Boeing720? Wikipedia is not an outlet for your or anybody else's stream-of-consciousness. The link you give Cullen above goes to the blog of a right-wing activist, which is in no way a reliable source. I've no idea why you say it's from Svenska Dagbladet, which is by contrast a respectable newspaper — how did you get those two mixed up? If you publish the kinds of hints about Greta Thunberg and her father that are made in that blog, Wikipedia can be sued. Don't quote stuff like that here. Nothing in particular will "become of" you if you restrain yourself from furthering conspiracy theories on Wikipedia. There are plenty of sites on the internet that will welcome that type of material — I suggest you use them instead. Bishonen | talk 20:46, 30 October 2019 (UTC).[reply]
I don't have to speak each and every truth. From where on earth did that come from ? The source you refer to quotes indeed Svenska Dagbladet. And as I was warned for using "Communist" then you could well be warned yourself by labeling this source "far right" without any supporting source at all - apparently not allowed even at talk-pages. The key, as I see it, is about how a young girl with a psychiatric diagnose known as Aspberger's Syndrome is abused by the father. And the horrific results this campaign very well might cause the poorest countries of the world. And we don't even have a clue of for instance the Pacific Ocean surface temperatures 30 or 60 years ago. The lack of comparing data is disturbingly huge. Whilst we for certain know how dirty the sea around Rio de Janeiro was during the Olympics. And there are probably millions of polluted areas around the world. And by focus everything on the dizzy climate questions, like the growing Ozon hole before that, all the local pollution disasters increase in numbers and gets worse. This even reaches relatively poor areas of otherwise rich countries, like the Legionnaires in Fleet, Michigan - presumably caused by the tap water. (Flint was once a great Motor City, but just as US Boomtowns can grow very fast, when US cities decline, everything goes faster too, when compared to European counterparts.)
