The Utmankhel (Pashto: اتمان خیل) or Utman Khel tribe, who appear to be Pathans of Kodai branch of the Karlanri. are Pashtun tribe living in Pakistan, with considerable numbers in Afghanistan. The Utman Khel mostly live in the Bajaur District, Malakand District, Mohmand District, Orakzai, mardan and Lower Dir. They lie between the Mohmands and the Ranizais of Swat, to the west and south-west of the junction of the Swat and Panjkora rivers. They claim to be descendants of Baba Utman Shamraiz, who also assisted Mahmud of Ghaznavi in his expedition into India in 997. The Utman Khel are a tall, stout and fair race, but their dress and general customs have been assimilated by the neighbouring peoples of Bajaur.

Major areas

Mandal (Elder son of Baba Utman, Major areas; Mandal Bajawar, Ghusam Munda- Timergara Dara Utmankhel It lies in Timergara tehsil, The inhabitants of this area belong to the Mandal, clan of Utman Khel.-Morani Dir Lower)

The Ibrahim khel, Utman zai, Toori Khel, Ali Khel residue in Matako (located on the east north edge of bajaur agency adjusting to Dir lower), while the sarkani khel, sarni khel and umar khel are living in Arang, Kulala and qazafi.

A large number of peoples from Utman khel tribe also reside in Dir lower. The subtribe Mataki(متكى) which travelled from Kimur Ghar Qilla(Castle) to Matako now riside in Ananguro khwar, Khohairy and adjesent areas.

Mian Khan

The inhabitants of the village belong to Utmankhel tribe of pakhtun the descendants of Utman bin Karlanr (the famous karlanri qabayal). There are three main clans of utman Khel tribe i.e. Miskeen khel, Mirhawas khel and Achoo khel living in the village which are subdivided further into smaller groups or khels. The traditional hujra system of Pashtun culture is still alive here.we can divide the inhabitants of mian khan in four cast mirwaskhail, Aloo Khail, Moosa khail Zain khan khel and maskeen khal & Darab khel ...

Abakhel (Pashtun tribe)

The descendants of Sadu, son of Utman are called who are divided into five families namely Aba Khel, Umar Khel, Khadu Khel, Mir Ahmed Khel and Behzad Khel. The tombs of Aba and Umar are present between the villages of Panj Pir and Darra marking the boundary between Aba Khel and Umar Khel.
