Thanks. I knew about the boundary marker near the Potomac, and the map, but I was running out of daylight the day I was down there. We're supposed to have good weather here for the next week so I might try again. It's like going to the other side of the world for some reason and I know very little about South DC so I'll see what I can do and what kind of time I have. Since you have more detailed experience about individual properties, in general the downtown properties are what, like early residences of the city? I mean I can look and count myself, but I guess I'm just thinking of something general to put in the lead to summarize all of the properties. I don't think I want to put # of houses, # of commercial buildings, # of fire stations, sounds boring to me. CTJF83 21:23, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

The downtown area is primarily made up of late 19th and early 20th century commercial buildings. It's also where the office buildings are located. Another focal point would be the government buildings. The primary residential buildings are apartment buildings, which includes the apartments above the commercial space on the ground floor. There are a few houses, but most of the houses in the dowtown area are now on the east and west listings.

I've been in town for a funeral and was going to try and get some pictures, but when I was able to do so its been cloudy. I'll be back next week and I'll try again. I thought I would focus on the west end, although the Putam-Parker Block needs a pic or two. Farragutful (talk) 14:36, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

I notice that you've recently made some edits to National Register of Historic Places listings in Woodbury County, Iowa, and created an article about the Badgerow Building and the Warrior Hotel in Sioux City.

If you're planning to work up a set of articles on Sioux City sites, I expect to be up there with my camera within the next month or so (at the request of User:Frankie Rae, who's been working hard to improve our coverage of buildings by William L. Steele). If there are specific buildings that you'd like photographed, please feel free to leave a list at my talk page. Seeing I've been invoked, I'm joining this conversation. I've been working on and off on an article about the Steele-designed Prairie School church at 1301 Nebraska. Originally built as the First Congregational Church, later sold to the Sioux City Baptists, and most recently the Iglesia Pentecostes Evangelica Principe de Paz. There's quite a bit of contradictory information about it, and I've been working through it slowly. Sorry, I've been battling a cold and haven't been online much the last several days. The Badgerow Bldg has a plethora of decorative elements including Indian heads, entryways and the rooftop level. The Warrior Hotel also has a variety of terra cotta decor that would be nice to capture. Augustana Lutheran is a nice church overall, but I'm not sure if there is anything in particular that you need to focus on.Farragutful (talk) 19:08, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

DC pix

I tried to finish up the DC NRHP photos on Thursday, but didn't get all of them. The Gallinger Hospital should be easy, but I got the wrong building! There's a new listing which I hadn't noticed for a school. The SE 9 boundary marker would require some ropes or maybe mountain-climbing equipment (not to mention the 2 mile one way walk) to get under the I-295 bridge safely, but at least I found a 1907 photo. Consider that one done - or maybe hire a helicopter! I'll be going to get the Carousel early AM on May 4 to get shots without kids in them, and will take care of the odds and ends then. I know that I've put in a few photos under the rule "better some picture than nothing" - if you have anything that you think should be re-taken please note that at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/unillustrated DC

• Getting some of the final photos has been on my to-do list, but I've been abnormally busy with work and haven't gotten to it. I also took a picture of the wrong building for the Gallinger Hospital. When I tried to find out which of the buildings in the complex it was I learned that the building has been torn down, although it is still listed on both the DC historic list and the NRHP. I will try and get the Margaret Murray Washington School soon. I know where it's at and I should have time this month. At the same time I might attempt the wilds of SW Washington to get a photo of the last boundary marker. We'll see.Farragutful (talk) 20:08, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

• • Thanks for all the work. It'll be great to get the whole list of photos marked "done", but it certainly will get done in time for Wikimania. I'll advise against SE 9. I went out there Thursday and it's a nice 1+ mile walk in the park, but then gets all overgrown and swampy with fallen down trees (btw I saw signs of beaver habitation). After hacking though the undergrowth, I got a good view of the "underpass" for the bridge - there really isn't one. It's a steep pile of rocks and gravel going from the bridge concrete to the water directly below for maybe 30 yards out to the underpass - then 8 lanes across of the same thing - and presumably another 30 yards of the same on the other side going back to the mainland. Pretty dangerous stuff - it might be safer just parking on the side of the interstate - but I'd never recommend that. So, in short, a 1907 photo seems good enough. (I'll send photos of the "landmarks" if you really don't believe me!)

I don't know if you are still interested, but I'll be meeting with the Spring Flower Show people at the All Hallows Guild Carousel at the above time and place. Please join if you can. Rain date is 9am the following morning, and I may go Friday evening as well to get the carousel in action, with indistinct pictures of kids. I don't like the potential hazards of photographing identifiable kids, so my main thrust will be on the animal figures while the kids aren't there (i.e. Thursday). Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

St. John's replica location

Where is the building Commons:File:St. John's SS 1.jpg? Is it on the grounds of the Georgia Ave. church, the Rosensteel Ave. church, or somewhere else? I was thinking of proposing an article move from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (Silver Spring, Maryland) to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (Montgomery County, Maryland) because of the two locations, but if the replica is outside Montgomery County, then it gets a bit complicated (unless there is no other St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Maryland). --Closeapple (talk) 00:56, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. • I couldn't agree more. Actually, I was kind of surprised last summer by how many were in half-way decent shape. I also realized that another one has been torn down (William Claussen House). Svendsen has a picture in one of her books and none of the ones on that bloock look like it. There's a "newer" house where it should have been with a different address. A house with that address (2215 W. 2nd St.) doesn't exist. I think I got all the ones that are still standing. Farragutful (talk) 02:07, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

metro_archbishop

Is there some reason you are removing the metro_archbishop field, which lists the metropolitan archbishop of suffragan dioceses? Elizium23 (talk) 00:45, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Yes, archbishops have no direct leadership authority in the suffragan sees and should not be listed as "Leadership" in a suffragan see. They preside at the meetings of the provincial bishops, but primarily function as the diocesan bishop of the archdiocese. The communion of any diocese with the larger church is found between its bishop and the Bishop of Rome. That is why in the Eucharistic Prayer the assembly, by way of the priest, prays for the pope and the diocesan bishop(s) and not the metropolitan, unless of course they are in a metropolitan archdiocese. An archbishop only exercises "authority" in a suffragan see when there is a serious irregularity in the see or when he is elected, or appointed, administrator sede vacante. Image request

Do you ever get down below Muscatine when you're back in Iowa? I visited the state for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and while I had only a little time, I was able to get photos of a few National Register sites, including all in Louisa County — except one. The County Line Bridge is on a dirt road, and that day was wet enough that I feared getting stuck. If you have a chance when you're next in the area, I'd appreciate it if you could try to get down that way, so that National Register of Historic Places listings in Louisa County, Iowa could be fully illustrated. It's rare that I get below Muscatine these days. That being said, I do know the area and I was thinking at some point I might go down that way. I will only be in Iowa for a weekend this winter so there is no time and I will probably be there next summer. I was planning to go to Clinton County (to the north), however, that could change. Thanks for getting the Louisa County pics. I don't blame you for not going down that road. I don't like them on sunny dry days. An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Thanks. I was thinking I would make one for the QCs. The Bettendorf pics were horrible. I'm going to be in town at the end of the month and thought I might look around then. I was going to re-shoot my pics of the convention center and I was thinking that Duck Creek at Devils Glen is nice. I was also considering the I-74 Bridge from Moline looking toward downtown Bettendorf. If you want to take some of these pics now, or any others you can think of, I would certainly use them. I'm less familiar with East Moline than the others, so whatever you think represents the city would certainly help. I hope all is well.Farragutful (talk) 23:04, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Thanks. My project was to get articles written for all the cathedrals and then get photos. I got three photos this year by asking people in those areas if they could take them. The guy who took the Youngstown photo travels so I'm hoping the rest in that general area are taken care of now. Kansas, as you say, is the question. Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

• February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
• February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
• February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

Hello again!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.

First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).

Now, I am very pleased to announce:

• Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
• Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
• Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
• Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.

There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

St. Raphael/St. Patrick in Madison, Wisconsin

From what I understand, St. Raphael is now demolished and St. Patrick is now the Pro Cathedral for Madison until the new St. Raphael is constructed. But there isn't a lot of info for St. Patrick on their wiki page. I wanted to change the "List of the Catholic cathedrals of the United States" page to reflect this.

I'm skeptical of the GCatholic information. The Madison situation has always been unclear to me. I know that St. Raphael's was taken down some time ago and a "Cathedral Parish" with the two remaining downtown churches was established. Parish-wise I understand the situation, but not cathedral-wise. Only one church gets the chair unless there are co-cathedrals, and every Catholic diocese is supposed to have a cathedral church with a cathedra. The Diocese of Madison website is most unhelpful unless one wants to make a donation. The parish website does not designate either church a pro-cathedral, in fact it lists them as Holy Redeemer Church and St. Patrick Church. The parish offices are located at St. Patrick's, but that doesn't make it the pro-cathedral per se. If I read it correctly the new cathedral, which will be located on the site of the former cathedral, will be be named St. Raphael's. The cathedral fire was ten years ago this month and there does not appear to be any noticeable movement toward building a new cathedral, which I find strange, if not curious. I also googled "st. patrick pro-cathedral madison wi" and got nothing but St. Patrick's Church in Madison and St. Raphael's Cathedral. Personally, I would do nothing at this time unless you have information that I could not find. If not, you could contact the parish or the diocese to see what they say. They should know, but then again they may be just as confused. I worked for the Church long enough to know that that's a distinct possibility. Farragutful (talk) 14:10, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

I found the NRHP nomination forms/photos six months ago so I'm rewriting all the pages in Scott County as I have time. I thought I'd make other corrections as well. There were only five incorrect photos. I'll be there in two weeks and I'm planning to retake them, although I suspect the Spencer House in PV has been torn down. New COA for Bishop Sis, San Angelo, Texas

I just received a file from the web master at San Angelo to upload a new file for Bishop Sis' new COA. The one on his wiki page is a .svg file which I can't upload cause none of my editing tools has capabilities to do .svg. It arrived as an Adobe document. Can you help me?

New Cathedral pics

Over the weekend, I emailed the Dioceses whose pictures that are missing from the Wiki pages and I got responses from 4 of them: Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart - Charleston, WV, Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help - Rapid City, SD, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit - Bismarck, ND, Sacred Heart Cathedral - Salina, KS.

Unlike my previous edits and uploads, I wasn't aware of the copyright issues involved or the procedures with images. Hopefully I can get them resolved. Roberto221 (talk) 00:18, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Good work. I've never gotten an image that way, but I thought all that was needed was an email from, in this case the diocese, with permission to use the image that has to be turned in to Wikimedia. I guess there's more to it. I've worked with copyrights in the past and I know they have to be on top of the issue. I'm going to be in Orlando for a couple of days in August and I should be able to get St. James. It's possible that I could get to Joliet in July, but it's not for sure. I'm also going to be in Honolulu in January and I plan to get the co-cathedral then. Those are the only places I plan to be in where there are no photos. Farragutful (talk) 01:04, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Sui iuris Churches

Can I ask why you have started to remove sui iuris Church names from the Cathedral infoboxes? I disagree with your changes. It reduces the information conveyed in this space. Please seek WP:CONSENSUS before continuing. Elizium23 (talk) 22:37, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

The infoboxes for churches are color coded. The Catholic Church is that ugly, pale, whatever color that is, not olive green. They should all reflect their inclusion in the Catholic Church, not their exclusion as "Uniates." Some of the sui iuris churches are included already, i.e. the Maronites for example, but most are not. I stopped changing them and decided instead to request the infobox be changed to include all of the churches. Farragutful (talk) 22:59, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

I've done that for about 10 different pages throughout the years, and I agree, it does look cleaner in addition to the pages being shorter. We can come up with a plan on what data to include, what to make sortable(images don't sort). With some editing, the tables can be transferred from one page to another easily. Deleting Cathedral pics

There's a user/editor who's deleting Cathedral pics from the pages. So far he's deleted "Saint John the Baptist Cathedral - Fresno" and "Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help - Rapid City, SD". He goes by the name "User:Natuur12". I've saved the OTRS ticket #'s from the other pics I've uploaded for reference. You encountered any problems like this before? I noticed earlier this week that there was a notice on those two photos that the OTRS info was incomplete and the ticket could not be issued. I assumed you had been informed seeing as you uploaded the photos. That is usually how it is done. It seems you didn't know about it and I now wish I would have said something to you. I note from Natuur12's user page that he/she is on the OTRS team. You might contact him/her to see what the problem was. You might have to resubmit the photo and the info you have. This particular thing has never happened to me, but other problems have occurred and they can be irritating. I doubt it was malicious. Cathedral pics

Last month I was able to get the cathedrals in Joliet, Orlando and Harrisburg (odd travel month). I found people to get the cathedrals in Allentown and Kansas City, Kansas. I'm going to be in New Jersey next week and I hope to get better photos of the Latin Rite cathedrals in Camden and Paterson, as well as the Byzantine Rite cathedral in Passaic. I'm also going to try and get the pro-cathedral in Camden, but I'm not certain they use it much for cathedral purposes. The only other plans I have is to be in Honolulu in January. Even though that's several months from now I have carved out some time to go to the co-cathedral, so if you don't hear from them now a photo will be forthcoming. I might get to Raleigh in October to get a better photo of Sacred Heart, and if possible, the construction of their new cathedral. Those are all I'm aware of at this time. I've been thinking about this for quite a while and I'm also going to email some of the dioceses/cathedrals to see if I can get better pics of their cathedrals. I've used the "Bird's eye" view on Bing maps and a better pic can be taken...

• Charlotte, NC - doesn't show the whole front of the cathedral
• Wilmington, DE - doesn't show the whole front of the cathedral
• Belleville, IL - doesn't show the whole front of the cathedral, shows only the spire and clock
• Springfield, IL - doesn't show the whole front of the cathedral
• Lansing, MI - doesn't show the whole front of the cathedral
• Bridgeport, CT - traffic light and power lines in the shot
• Green Bay, WI - doesn't show the whole front of the cathedral
• La Crosse, WI - it's the back of the cathedral
• Jackson, MS - doesn't show the whole front of the cathedral
• Altoona, PA - power lines in the shot, it's not the front of the cathedral but the side taken from a rooftop
• Greensburg, PA - it's a side shot with a tent in the middle of the pic
• Kansas City, MO - it's a rear, side shot
• Dallas, TX - traffic light

Personally, I think I would hold off for the most part. The Dallas cathedral has 24 photos and most of them show the whole building from a variety of vantage points. That's hardly a lack of choices, and there is one that does not have a traffic light in it. The problem with that building is that it is downtown and downtowns have traffic lights, street lights, signs, parked cars, traffic and pedestrians. It also has an impossibly tall tower and spire in comparison to the rest of the building. The San Francisco cathedral sits above the street elevation and is fronted by a plaza. One of its seven exterior photos shows this perspective, but then you don't see the cross on top. The Bridgeport cathedral would have power lines running in front of it regardless. The front yard does not appear to be long enough for a better perspective without the power lines. It would be difficult to get a photo of the Charlotte cathedral with its tower and not include power lines. It also sits above the street level so this photo is probably as good as it gets. Trees and power lines would obscure the Lansing cathedral. The Wilmington cathedral has multiple issues. It is located in the oldest part of the city. On the east coast that means the streets are very narrow and the power lines front the street. Should one stand across the street a couple of trees and the power lines will block/pass in front of the cathedral. Because the street is narrow and the building across the street is on the sidewalk with little or no yard in front the perspective may be no better. The poles that hold up the power lines are also placed in such a way that it makes a decent ¾ shot tricky. It's also a small structure so these obstructions cover a wider range of space than a larger building would. When I got to the Peoria cathedral last year there was construction equipment in front, so I did the best I could as it was the only day I had time to get the photos. It's hard to get a decent photo of some of these places and for the most part they are taken by amateurs like myself. We don't necessarily have the best equipment and little training.

Others would be easier to get a better photo such as the Springfield, IL, but that's not a bad photo. It appears the location of the sun was the reason that particular vantage point was chosen. The only one I would suggest getting a photo of would be Belleville. It's a beautiful building and a photo of the spire doesn't do it justice. It's also not a photo of the building, but a small part of it. You could also contact the guy who got the Kansas City, Kansas cathedral to get a good shot of the front of the KC, MO cathedral. I noticed he was uploading photos of KC buildings on the National Register and he took the photos the same day I made the request. He was very happy to do it, and would probably be willing to get photos of Immaculate Conception. Another guy recently took photos of the Green Bay cathedral, including one of the exterior that looks to have been taken with a drone. List of the Catholic dioceses of the United States

I see where they commented out the Diocese COA's on the diocese page whereas on the "List of Catholic bishops of the United States" they totally deleted them. I tried to get an explanation from the editor(User talk:Hammersoft, the query is at the bottom of his talk page) but he wasn't budging. Next time, I'll know better on uploading.

On another note, got your tickets to see the Pope? My church is selling a $50 bus ride to Philly, I don't know if that includes tickets to the Mass. If it's televised, I'll watch it, otherwise there no way I'm going downtown. Metro will be jammed packed and so will the streets around the Ellipse. Roberto221 (talk) 20:05, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

"Hammersoft" is correct. Copyrighted images may be uploaded to English Wikipedia, but their use is limited to the page the logo/coat of arms represents. The self-made coat of arms are not 100% accurate. If you look at them closely, the symbols are similar to those used in the official coat of arms, but they're no the same. The colors are also somewhat off.

Personally, I wouldn't go near Philly. I have a feeling it will put those with the best patience to the test. I would think his major events will all be televised. I have a ticket to the capitol (outside) and I'm going to go even though I may not see him very well. I'll bring my camera and hope for the best. I was at Obama's second Inauguration (I have a connection at the capitol) and hopefully it will be similar. I had no trouble with Metro. I walked from the capitol to the Navy Yard station and rode the train through downtown and back out to Maryland. I'll try that again. Farragutful (talk) 03:05, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
