Block log filters

Hi. When attempting to view a recent block log, I can only see filters for the block type (unblock / modify / block etc) and tag. There are options to filter on specific performers and targets, but can't see a way to filter on the *type* of target (i.e. anon vs account).

e.g. if I visit a url such as: [1] there are dozens of entries for ST47ProxyBot (talk · contribs) blocking various proxies which I have to filter through to get a list of accounts being blocked. Are there query parameters to achieve this?

Thanks - 220.146.93.159 (talk) 01:52, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You could try Special:BlockList. Remsense 01:57, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Catholic Encyclopedia

catholic

The Catholic Encyclopedia reflink template is broken. Message on article reads

"cite encyclopedia: Missing or empty |title= (help)"

Nirva20 (talk) 04:28, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Nirva20: What article, please? RudolfRed (talk) 04:47, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All the articles (presumably thousands) to which the template is affixed. One is Alexander Kaufmann. Nirva20 (talk) 04:50, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nirva20: I spot-checked a few and did not see any widespread problem. Alexander Kaufmann has the error because title= or wstitle was not specified. See note 1 at Catholic RudolfRed (talk) 05:02, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Nirva20 (talk) 05:06, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nirva20: See the documentation at Catholic. The template is supposed to include one of two parameters. If neither is included, the teamplate adds the article to a hidden category, Category:Articles incorporating text from the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia with no article parameter. There are currently about 330 articles in the category, probably mostly from the olden times before the parameters became mandatory. If you would like to help, please go fix a few of these. -Arch dude (talk) 05:20, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Nirva20 (talk) 05:21, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nirva20Looks like a good chunk are something "Catholic Diocese of X" so Catholic would change to and similarly for the Archdiocese.Naraht (talk) 19:57, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude et alia -- the problem is that even with the correct template, the problem is that the Catholic Encyclopedia is essentially defunct online and has been subsumed into the New Advent website. Maybe a new template should be created. Nirva20 (talk) 23:37, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading pictures into a Wikipedia article

Hello.

I am trying to upload a couple of pictures into a Wikipedia article, but it tells me that I do not have the authority to upload them. Please advise.

My article was unfairly deleted

Hi, my article was deleted even though all material falls within the public domain and doesn't infringe on any copyright.

What can I do to restore it? CraigVHenry (talk) 08:48, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, CraigVHenry. Perhaps Liz can explain the copyright issue. However, the deleted content bears no resemblance to an actual encyclopedia article. Cullen328 (talk) 09:29, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, I've been a donor to Wikipedia for some years by reason of the platforms decentralized dedication to truth. Then, in the topic of the article, the only way to expound is to quote legitimate content. Many articles and content on the platform excerpt direct quotes for similar reasons as burden of proof. Then, making use of content that's been in the public domain for millenia for reasons of fair use is certainly not a problem. Please reinstate the article. CraigVHenry (talk) 10:24, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As an editor, I thank you for donating- but donations are handled by the Foundation, we editors have nothing to do with the process and don't see the money. Wikipedia is not about truth- see WP:TRUTH- which isn't to say we don't want to accurately summarize sources, but truth is in the eye of the beholder. 331dot (talk) 10:29, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CraigVHenry: There's an explanation on your talk page, in particular: the page appeared to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appeared to be a direct copy from https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/shepherd-lightfoot.html. Bazza (talk) 09:45, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The manuscripts excepted in the writing are in the public domain. They are thousands of years old and have been so since antiquity. The website mentioned is nothing more than a library project for the public to find some of the thousands of manuscripts. I simply quote fair use of topically paragraphs across the spectrum from many manuscripts. Many thanks. CraigVHenry (talk) 10:11, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That website states "Early Christian Writings is copyright © 2001-2024 Peter Kirby". 331dot (talk) 10:15, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The website may be copyrighted i.e. the name of the website, but the manuscripts have been in the public domain for thousands of years. Nobody has rights over for example a pre-flood manuscript written over five thousand years ago addressed to the world. CraigVHenry (talk) 10:28, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then you might want to tell Peter Kirby that- but Wikipedia is not a place to host primary source material like religious texts. 331dot (talk) 10:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The original texts undoubtedly are in the public domain, but you are not quoting original texts. You are quoting translations which are copyright by the translator. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 10:49, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but if the translator is this J. B. Lightfoot (1828-1889) we're good to go, I think. No opinion on how the text was used in the article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:30, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I am trying to publish a page for "OSRC Network" on Wikipedia, but it is being deleted by the admin. The page has informational content. Can you please let me know how to resolve this issue? Do I need to pay for it?

Fixing dead links

I'm currently working on fixing dead links from Category:Articles with dead external links. However, this category also includes permanent dead links as well as normal dead links. Does anyone know if there is a category that only has articles that have dead links and no permanent dead links? Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:15, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cocobb8 I don't think that this is will be a separate category but you should be able to use PetScan to find those in "dead links" which are not in "permanent dead links". See documentation at meta. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:30, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cocobb8 I wouldn't really even make a distinction if you're trying to recover a dead link. It's not that unusual to find a "permanent dead link" that can actually be recovered. Even if you're only checking the Wayback archive, it can simply be the case that there are some "blue" Wayback links which are useless (e.g. they show a page saying that the requested page doesn't exist) as well as actually working blue links. Also, there is the possibility of finding additional archive versions using wildcards to ignore differences in the archived url, so these are differences in the display options (i.e. at the end of the url string). I don't know the exacts rule" for doing this, usually I will truncate it at some punctuation mark (e.g. a hyphen or other special character), add an asterisk, then, assuming this was an acceptable position for the wildcard (and it doesn't seem to be consistent about what's an acceptable position), it will give you up to 10,000 matching urls (but to be able to see all the possible matches, you'll want to put the asterisk in a position so that you get under 10,0000 hits). You can enter a string in the box above the hitlist in order to limit the display to those that match some string in the urls. Yes, this is extra effort but it works with enough frequency to make it worthwhile.
To be clear, I am unaware of specific documentation for this, it's generally only going to be useful if there were originally multiple urls for the same content (these seem to be mostly newspaper citations, but it's worth the effort because, so far as I am aware, there's no bot that does this). Hit me back if you have questions. Fabrickator (talk) 15:59, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here's an example url that this actually works for: "https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/grimsby-win-stuns-anfield-630897.html"
If you do the whole url, you'll get no matches. If you replace the "win-stuns-anfield-630897.html" with "*", you'll get appropriate hits with working wayback copies. Fabrickator (talk) 16:26, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fabrickator@Michael D. Turnbull Thanks to you both that helps a lot! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 16:07, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I can't recall the precise details, but at times in the past, when a copyright or plagiarism violation was found and that violation was treated as "circumstantial evidence" to implicate hundreds of articles, those which didn't get "rescued" got deleted within a week or so. At the moment, I can't recall the specific details, but the evidence was so weak against these articles, I would think the effort would be better spent on re-creating these articles. (Maybe someone else can recognize this scenario and fill in the details.) Fabrickator (talk) 17:32, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SOFIXIT? I'm not sure how/why this is a matter for the Help desk; perhaps you can elaborate? DonIago (talk) 18:36, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia can be kind of opaque, and experienced WP editors may not realize just how opaque it is. Anyway, if your favorite "article" is not shown as being in an appropriate category, the category needs to be added to the bottom of the article, e.g. add "Category:Fellows of the Explorers Club" (inside of double-square brackets) to the article in question (usually at the bottom). If there is a hierarchy of categories involved (i.e. one category contains other categories), then add the article to the relevant lowest-level category. (I've never done anything at all with categories, so it's proper to say that I'm just guessing.) Fabrickator (talk) 01:07, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Writing an article

I am trying to write an article, it keeps getting declined due to lack of sources. The World Bushido Federation has its website and Facebook page at the moment.I either need someone to write it or to understand right now there's only 2 sources and approve it. Stingray3000 (talk) 03:45, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Stingray3000: a subject must be notable by our definition before it can have an article. see WP:NCORP. If those are the only two sources, then the World Bushido Federation is not notable by our definition and therefore cannot have an article. -Arch dude (talk) 05:43, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Stingray3000 (talk) 21:39, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Or to put it another way: Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. Protected template problem

Hi I am a director of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Foundation. I visited our page and realised it was hopelessly out of date. Many government departments, organisations and external links and other things had disappeared. Images were incorrect. I have no idea who set the page up about a decade ago. However, they set up a citation template that is protected and I cannot fix citations etc.

Is there any way I can become editor of this page so that we can correct all the issues that occur within templates?

Hi, @BrooksieG, the changes that you made to the article were inappropriate in several ways: they were overly promotional and were not supported by reliable sources. Generally Wikipedia is not interested in what an organization wants to say about itself, but only in what unaffiliated reliable sources have published about it. Citing clippings of a multi-page article at Newspapers.com

I understand they haven't pursued the option to link multiple clippings, so what's the consensus here on how to do it that is least confusing for readers? And thank you so much for being the angels you are! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 09:36, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Oona Wikiwalker. Your question lacks sufficient context for me to be highly confident in my answer, but here goes: If a newspaper published an article about a topic, and the article was published on pages 17 to 19, then include 17-19 in the page number field. It makes no difference whatsoever whether you found the the article at Newspapers.com or in a stack of old newspapers that your grandmother saved. It is all the same. Provide complete bibliographic details and then move on. Cullen328 (talk) 10:25, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The bit that Cullen328 has not spelt out to you, Oona, is that for most citations, a link is not an essential part of the citation, but a convenience added for a reader. The important bit is the bibliographic information (author, title, date, publication, page etc) that will allow a reader to a) estimate the likely value of consulting the source, and b) obtain the source, whether by picking a link, by ordering a copy from a major library, or anything in between, ColinFine (talk) 12:23, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Odd capitalisation in infobox

In Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, infectious diseases is capitalised in the infobox, but not in the source text. Anybody know how to ensure it's written normally? —Femke 🐦 (talk) 16:49, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be a bug in Module:String2 ucfirst() particularly at line 25 (permalink) where the mw.ustring.find() finds the piped link infectious disease the label of which it then capitalizes. I guess I would have expected that function to capitalize the 'r' in Rheumatology (had it not already been capitalized). If I down-case the 'R' in Rheumatology the bug skips over that and still capitalizes the 'infectious disease' link label:

Rheumatology, rehabilitation medicine, endocrinology, infectious disease, neurology, immunology, internal medicine, paediatrics, other specialists in ME/CFS
I'll give some thought to fixing this.

i'm working on a draft for a multimedia project and i'm trying to find an infobox for it. however i have 0 idea which one to use. the project itself is only music videos, audio drama, and occasional supplementary comics or questions, but i cant use the anime, manga, or musician boxes with it. are there any suggestions for boxes that would have potential for more detail but wouldnt be specific, or would i just have to code my own? -Astral~(he/him/his) 18:01, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AstralAlley: Take a look at Infobox artwork. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:05, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
this should work (hopefully). i'll try it, but it's definitely better than what i have now, thanks :3 -Astral~(he/him/his) 20:53, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lead sentence of biography

Hi! I'm currently editing the biography of a living person who's best known by a pseudonym. I've come to the conclusion that I can't include their last name under WP:BLPPRIVACY (as I'm doubtful that it's been widely published); however, as they have stated what their first name is in an interview, I believe that this is alright to include.

I was wondering what the best way to word the opening sentence would be in this situation. I've checked MOS:BIO, and from what I can see, it would normally take the form of something like [firstname] [lastname], better known as [pseudonym]...; however, I can't see any guidance on what to do if only the first name is known/can be included - and [firstname], better known as [pseudonym] seems...weird, as (for one reason) it almost implies that the person doesn't have a last name. Is it better to just simply remove the legal name entirely from the lead sentence in this scenario? (Is there a part of the MOS that addresses this situation that I've missed?)

Any guidance on what best to do in this situation is appreciated :) All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 20:36, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you refer to Fanum (streamer)? Their surname is already in the article. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:54, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, but I don't believe it's been widely published enough to meet the WP:BLPPRIVACY threshold (and the only cited source that includes the surname is dubious as an RS), so I'm planning to remove it - but I don't know how best to reword that part of the lead sentence. All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 20:56, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just looking through Category:American YouTubers for example, there seems to be some precedent for [firstname], better known as [pseudonym]: Technoblade, mxmtoon, QTCinderella, Jerma985, Dream (YouTuber). Rummskartoffel 14:41, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rummskartoffel Thank you! I hadn't thought of looking through there :) All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 23:13, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Review of blocked sockpuppet articles

Recently 13Joker13 and လူကောင်း were blocked for being sockpuppet accounts. The full case can be found here but basically there are some real WP:CIR issues with this user. The following articles have been created.

Given the CIR issues, I wonder do we need to do a review of articles to see if they can be kept or at least draftified first. For example Ulf Löfgren is almost a direct copy paste of google translate from the Swedish wikipedia page.

Is there a page we can place this request on?

How to display talk pages as web pages in mobile view?

In mobile view, is there any way to display talk pages as web pages the way the "view as web page" button used to do?

(Explanation, FWIW: Currently, talk pages by default appear in mobile browsers in a simplified form that shows only discussion threads and omits userboxes, templates, archive links et cetera. Although there is now a clickable "Learn more about this page" button that displays the omitted material, it shows only that material, without the discussion threads. I want to see the full page in mobile view without having to switch to desktop view.)

Thanks and happy editing -- Middle 8 privacy(s)talk 11:45, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Middle 8, that button seems to have been removed in T280417. Maybe Matma Rex, the developer who made this change, knows about a workaround. Rummskartoffel 14:56, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The WP:Contact us does not have the Next button.

As like as most pages for Wikipedia, there is a button called 'Previous' and 'Next'. Would you mind taking some time adding the blue button? 2001:EE0:4BC7:6D80:DC97:2FF6:583C:A2A0 (talk) 13:11, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think a reason behind that choice was because there is no specific order to view them in. Different tabs are meant for different users. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 14:39, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Most pages in Wikipedia do not have "Next" or "Previous" buttons, because they would make no sense. ColinFine (talk) 15:40, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit notice when editing article Star Control

When editing the article Star Control, I see a note saying:

There are suggestions on this article's talk page for references that may be useful when improving this article in the future. (See the talk page section that begins "The following ...".)

There is no such section. Talk:Star Control is empty of discussion and its only archive Talk:Star Control/Archives/2023/December only has sections that begin with "The following" in the RFC and DYK sections.

What is this note about and if it's wrong, how do I get to edit or delete it? JIP | Talk 16:43, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The note is referring to the banner on the talk page right below the WikiProjects. There are two links, one to an interview on Youtube and another to an Ars Technica article. It doesn't refer to any particular topic of discussion. That template could probably be improved by stating that it's pointing to a banner - stating "talk page section" is misleading Reconrabbit 16:59, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The text is from Refideas editnotice where Jonesey95 wrote: '(See the talk page section that begins "The following ...".)'.[4] Refideas makes a box and is used at top of the page, not in a section. I suggest 'See the box that begins ...'. The previous sentence says "Talk page" and links the talk page so I don't think "talk page" has to be repeated. The link goes to Talk:Star Control#refideas-anchor which would normally place the box at top when you click it but the page is so short that most users will be placed higher up because the browser doesn't have room to scroll down. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:37, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping. I have updated the text to refer to a "box" rather than a "section". – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:06, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can’t access a Teahouse reply I was writing

I was writing a reply to someone who in turn had replied to a question I’d raised there, when suddenly I ended up outside the Teahouse. I don’t know what happened. When I came back to the Teahouse, a system message told me my changes (which were original words I’d been typing, not changes as such) had been saved.

That sounded nice but after multiple tries, I can’t get back into that thread (titled ”Any way to download Wikipedia pages?”). I can get into the Teahouse itself, just not that message. Augnablik (talk) 19:03, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A related issue: until the problem I wrote about is fixed — probably by completing the reply I’d begun to an earlier replies my original message — apparently I can’t reply to ANY Teahouse messages.
But I don’t see the message I had started, so how can I complete it? 😕 Augnablik (talk) 02:59, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The source in references 3 & 4, a newspaper report of the race, makes the point that it was very cold, so that alone is probably worth mentioning. But the report doesn't say that it was the coldest race in NASCAR history up to that point, and of course doesn't apply to post-1990 NASCAR history; we would certainly need a reliable source stating this supposed record. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.45.226 (talk) 01:05, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

changing user name and creating a page

Hi, I hope you can help me. I spent months last year trying to set up a page for a new vaccine technology but for some reason it was blocked. I then changed my username, as it was recommended and I got a message just now, that because my username was associated with the company, it was blocked. It was odd as the username I chose today and confirmed was not the one that opened up on the page - I put Lauramurf1 and Lauramurfe arrived and was subsequently blocked. I am not sure what to do.

When I was going through the process last year, I also edited 11 articles as part of the process (in the original account/username) before attempting to set up a page. I feel totally stuck and do not understand what I need to do to progress with sharing the technology and clinical trial progress of this innovation for all to read on Wikipedia.

Any help, support (not in technical language!) would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you :) Lauramurfe (talk) 08:53, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is NOT a venue for "sharing the technology and clinical trial progress of this innovation" You merely copied and pasted content from their website and this was speedy deleted as "unambiguous copyright infringement of https://stablepharma.com/about/" Theroadislong (talk) 09:00, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for replying - I really appreciate that. Can you guide me as to the best way of setting up a page - I have read everything, altered the text, kept it to two sentances, only used content created by external references, not our created material. Some of the guidelines are difficult to clearly understand - is there a way to get instruction online?
Also are you able to understand why when I set up my username as Lauramurf1 it changed to Lauramurfe? Lauramurfe (talk) 10:42, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Two sentences are extremely unlikely to be sufficient to demonstrate notability. Instead of thinking of this as "setting up a page" for your company's work, think of it as writing an article about it. If you have independent reliable sources that discuss this process, that's what we are looking for, not what they company says about it. I fear you are too close to your company to be able to dispassionately write about this; articles are typically written by independent editors wholly unconnected with the topic. 331dot (talk) 10:54, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (INADI in Spanish) has been closed some days ago. But the process is not automatic, and it will take some time to complete it. So, technically, it still exists. Should the article describe it in present ("The INADI is") or past tense ("The INADI was")? Cambalachero (talk) 13:46, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
