The Paliyam Satyagraha (from December 1947 to March 1948) was the first organised Satyagraha in Kerala following independence of India. It was started in opposition to the Paliathachans, the Cochin state's hereditary prime ministers, who controlled Paliyam Road. [1]
Background
The Chennamangalam temple, which is devoted to Lord Ayyappa, is connected to the Paliyam road. Only Sabrimala is regarded as being superior by worshippers of Ayyappa, according to the temple. Paliyath Achan owned the Paliyam Road, which led to the Chendamangalam Temple. The Paliyam Road was off-limits to members of lower castes. As a result, the SNDP , Pulaya Mahasabha, and Kerala Communist Party staged a revolution.[2][3]
The Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP), Pulaya Mahasabha, and Communist Party of Kerala collaborated on the Satygraha, which was officially launched by C. Kesavan on December 4th, 1947. C. Kesavan served as Travancore-Cochin State's second chief minister before Kerala was created. Both the Christian community and women backed the protest equally. P Priyadhatta, E S Saraswathi, I C Priyadhatta, Arya Pallam Arya thampuratti, and Indira thampuratti were a few of the women leaders.[4] A G Velayudhan was martyred during a police lathi charge on the 100th day of the Paliyam Satyagraha in March 1948.[5]
Aftermath
On December 20, 1947, The Raja of Cochin issued a proclamation allowing all groups of people to stroll along Paliyam Road in response to the Satyagraha.[6][7]
