The Jalalabad prison attack occurred on 2–3 August 2020, when a suicide car bomber and gunmen of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISKP) attacked a prison in Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.[1][2] The attack began on the evening of 2 August.[1] A battle between soldiers and ISIL ensued, lasting about 20 hours.[1] At least 29 people were killed, including civilians, prisoners, guards, Afghan security forces and at least eight ISIL attackers.[1][2] Fifty other people were injured.[1] The prison held 1,793 inmates, most of whom were members of jihadist groups ISIL and the Taliban.[1] Most of the prisoners escaped, of whom 1,025 have been brought back to the prison.[1] On 3 August, ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack.[1][2]
