Empire Mall[1] is a shopping mall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States. Opened in 1975, the mall comprises more than 140 tenants (180 including carts, kiosks, hotels, ATMs, grocery stores and surrounding outdoor retail which can vary by season) in 1,341,202 square feet (124,601.7 m2) of retail space, including five anchor stores (Dick's Sporting Goods, JCPenney, Macy's, and Sears, with one vacant anchor last occupied by Younkers) and a food court. Empire Mall is a huge tourist attraction in South Dakota, with more than seven million visitors annually.[2] The mall is owned and managed by Simon Property Group.

On April 18, 2018, it was announced that Younkers would be closing as parent company The Bon-Ton Stores was going out of business. The store closed on August 29, 2018.[3]

On May 31, 2018, Sears announced that it's store would also be closing as part of a plan to close 78 stores nationwide. The store will close in September 2018.[4]

History

Originally developed in 1975 by General Growth, it was sold when that REIT was liquidated in 1984. In 1998 it was acquired by a joint venture of The Macerich Company and Simon Property Group, with Macerich assuming the role of managing partner.[5] On January 1, 2012, Simon Property Group became the manager and full owner of the mall.[6]
