iOS 12 is the twelfth major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc., being the successor to iOS 11. It was announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 4, 2018. It is similar in aesthetics to iOS 11, but contains numerous performance and battery-saving updates, as well as added functionalities to some apps.

System features

Performance

Apple said that device performance will be up to 70% faster with iOS 12. Enhancements were made to the camera application specifically to make launching it and taking photos a quicker experience.[2]

Screen Time

iOS 12 has been updated to include a feature that allows users to track how much time they are spending on their devices and what they are doing. The system provides reports broken into categories and timeframes.[3]

Shortcuts

A dedicated application in iOS 12 allows users to set up shortcuts. Shortcuts are automated actions that the user can ask Siri to perform.[3]

ARKit 2

ARKit has been updated to include the ability for users to share their view with other iPhones.[4]

CarPlay

CarPlay now features the ability to run third party navigation applications.[3]

iPad

iPads can now use the gestures that are found on the iPhone X.[5] iPads can also use voice memos, stocks and have a new navigation bar at the top. iOS 12 is also separating the control centre (center) from the application switcher.

App features

Messages

Messages in iOS 12 introduces a new type of Animoji called “Memoji” which allows a user to create a 3D character of themselves. Apple also introduced Koala, Tiger, Ghost and T-Rex Animoji.[6]

FaceTime

FaceTime has been updated to support up to 32 people per FaceTime call. FaceTime also gains support for Animoji and Memoji.[5]

Measure

Apple introduced a new application that takes measurements and also works as a level.[5]

Photos

Photos now supports suggestions through a "For You" section and will make sharing recommendations.[5]

Notifications

Notifications are now grouped and have a "manage" tab, to turn off notifications for that app or to deliver them quietly.

Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb now has a feature called "Do Not Disturb During Bedtime" to automatically send notification to history, send calls to voicemail (can be changed to Favourites/Repeated calls) and to has a darker screen to be easy on your eyes.

Voice Memos & Stocks

Voice Memos and Stocks have had a design refresh, and the latter has integrated Apple News.

Apple Books

iBooks was renamed to Apple Books, and the app was refreshed, with a Discover Tab, Book Store, and more.
