Kim Jong-hyun (born April 8, 1990[1]) most often credited as Jonghyun, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and DJ. He is the main vocalist of the South Korean boy group Shinee and a member of the ballad group S.M. The Ballad. Jonghyun released his first solo album EP titled Base on January 12, 2015; and his first full album titled She Is on May 23, 2016.

Early life

Kim Jong-hyun was born on April 8, 1990[1]). His family consists of his mother, older sister and maternal grandfather. His father is rarely mentioned by him and implied to not be in the picture. Jonghyun has been active in music since junior high school, where he played bass guitar in a band with close friends named "Zion". It was during a performance with his band at his school that he was scouted by SM Entertainment.[2] After being scouted, he auditioned with the company and joined as a trainee through the "2005 S.M. Casting System". Before his debut with SHINee, he sang a duet with labelmate Zhang Liyin titled "Wrongly Given Love" for her debut album.

Music career

Shinee

In 2008, he was chosen as a member of the group Shinee; the 5-member boy group debuted on May 25, 2008 on SBS's Inkigayo.[3]

SM The Ballad

In November 2010, it was revealed by SM Entertainment that Jonghyun, along with TRAX’s Jay, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, and rookie singer, Jino, would be participating in a project group together under their label. The group was revealed to be named SM The Ballad. Rather than pop, the subunit focused more on releasing songs from within the ballad genre or the R&B ballad genre.[4] The group released their debut mini album, Miss You, on November 29, 2010. They debuted on November 28, 2010 on SBS's Inkigayo with their lead single that shared a title with the mini album. After finishing up the promotions for their first track, the subunit continued on with follow up promotions, the focus being another track on their album entitled "Hot Times".

Just over three years after the debut of the subunit, SM Entertainment confirmed on February 4, 2014 that it would be making its first comeback since finishing "Hot Times" promotions, much to the surprise of many. Jonghyun was the only member of the original line up to return for the comeback.[5] After the fresh and new line up was revealed, it was further revealed that Jonghyun would be participating in a duet Girls' Generation's Taeyeon named "Breath". They later went on to promote the track together.[6]

Soundtrack appearances

In October 2010, Jonghyun was one of twenty idols from various South Korean groups that recorded the song "Let's Go" for the purpose of increasing public participation in the 2010 G-20 Seoul summit. He provided vocals along with other labelmates, such as: Super Junior's Sungmin, Girls' Generation's Seohyun and f(x)'s Luna.[7]

Jonghyun released a collaboration single with Heritage titled "Your Voice" on March 18, 2016, as a part of S.M. Entertainment's SM Station project.[8]

Solo Debut

After rumors began to circulate throughout Korean media in December 2014 reporting that Jonghyun was in the middle of preparations for his solo debut,[9] Jonghyun's solo debut was officially confirmed. With the release of his first solo teaser on January 2, 2015, it was confirmed that Jonghyun would be making his solo debut on January 12, 2015 with his first mini album, Base.[10] Though the title track was originally the more upbeat "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)", which Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to, pre-release track "데자-부 (Déjà-Boo)" was soon after made a second title track after it charted incredibly well on the digital charts. The track both featured and was co-composed by Jonghyun's close friend, Zion.T.[11] Jonghyun's debut mini album met much acclaim and drew in attention not only because he participated heavily in the creation process, but because of the multiple collaborations with artists outside of SM Entertainment, including: rookie rapper Iron, Younha, Wheesung and Zion.T. The album ended up peaking at first place in its physical release on both the Billboard's World Album chart and the Gaon Album Chart.[12][13]

Later, in August 2015, it was revealed that Jonghyun would be the first entry in a new solo concert series put together by SM Entertainment named "The Agit".[14] The concert series, title "The Story by Jonghyun", was later confirmed to not only be set to be centered around the songs that Jonghyun released with his first mini album but the songs that he had written for his radio show. To coincide with the concert series, it was confirmed on September 13, 2015 that Jonghyun would be releasing his second album, a compilation album of each of his songs released on his radio show. All of the songs were rearranged and redone in a high quality studio setting to accommodate official release. Jonghyun did not promote the album on music shows or in the traditional sense, but did participate in three free busking concerts to promote it. The Album, Story Op.1, was released on September 17, 2015.[15] Following the release of the album, Jonghyun performed a total of 12 sold-out shows, titled The Story by Jonghyun, at the SMTOWN Coex Artium SMTOWN Theatre from October 2–4, October 8–11, and October 16–18. Each concert featured a different guest, including SHINee′s Onew and Taemin, IU, Zion.T, Jung In, Lim Kim, Oksang Dalbit, Coffee Boy, Nine, Lee Ji Hyoung, Soran and poet Ha Sang Wook.[16]

On May 24, 2016, SM Entertainment released Jonghyun's first studio album “She Is," consisting of nine tracks, and a music video for the title track "She Is."[17]

Compositions and lyric writing

Jonghyun debuted as a songwriter when writing the Korean lyrics to Shinee's fourth promotional single, "Juliette", which was the featured on their second mini album, "Romeo", released in May 2009. Jonghyun went on to participate in the writing of two songs on SHINee's second Korean studio album, "Lucifer". The first, "Up & Down", was co-written with Misfit with the rap being written by Minho. The second, "욕 (Obsession)", was completely written by Jonghyun minus Minho once again working on his own rap.

In 2012, Jonghyun co-wrote the lyrics to the song with "알람시계" (Alarm Clock)" with Minho, a song about wishing to wake up from the nightmare of a past break-up,[18] and wrote the lyrics to "늘 그자리에 (Honesty)" which was described as a song written for the fans who had stayed by their side with unchanging love until that point. Both songs were featured on the mini album, "Sherlock".

For Shinee's Misconceptions series (which is made up of two full albums and a repackage), Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to: "Spoiler", "오르골 (Orgel)", "Dangerous (Medusa II)" (which was co-written with Jo Yun Kyeong), "버리고 가 (Better Off)" and "너와 나의 거리 (Selene 6.23)", the last which was written after Jonghyun drew inspiration from witnessing a super moon in June 2013. In October 2013, Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to "상사병 (Symptoms)" which was featured on Shinee's fifth mini album, "Everybody".

In May 2015, he wrote the title track of Shinee's fourth Korean album, "Odd", "View", making it the second title track he had written for the group since their debut. He also wrote and composed the track "Odd Eye" on the same album, and the co-wrote the lyrics to the track, "Chocolate", on the repackage album released in August 2015.

In October 2013, Jonghyun debuted as a composer of the track "우울시계 (A Gloomy Clock)" which was featured on IU's third Korean album, "Modern Times". The song, which Jonghyun gifted to IU as a friend, was also co-written by Jonghyun and dubbed a duet.[19] Two months later in December "Red Candle", which was also composed and written by Jonghyun, was released by Son Dam Bi.[20]

In March 2015, another track that Jonghyun both composed and wrote, "Playboy", was featured on EXO's second Korean album, "EXODUS".[21] A month later, in April 2015, Lim Kim released "No More" on her third mini album, "Simple Mind", which Jonghyun also composed and wrote. He participated in the vocal direction for all of the aforementioned as well.[22]

Along with all of the already mentioned, Jonghyun surprised many when it was revealed that he participated in the March 2016 comeback of Lee Hi, her first after a three-year hiatus from the music industry. His contribution came in both composing and writing the lyrics to one of two of her title tracks, "Breathe" in the album Seoulite.[23] The collaboration marked the first time that an artist from SM Entertainment had formally collaborated with an artist from YG Entertainment.

Jonghyun has also contributed with the production of both of the albums of fellow member Taemin's, first with "Pretty Boy",[24] which was featured on his solo album, "Ace", in August 2014, and second with "벌써 (Already)" which was featured on his first full-length solo album, "Press It", which was released in February 2016.[25]

Variety show career

Television shows

On 6 November 2009, label mate Yesung of Super Junior made a surprise appearance on KBS' Music Bank with Shinee in place of Jonghyun, who was recovering from influenza, in a performance of "Ring Ding Dong".[26]

Jonghyun was also a cast member in KBS's Immortal Songs 2 for two episodes with fellow label-mate Yesung before having to leave the show in order to focus on SHINee's advancement / debut into the Japanese music industry.

The MC line up, which Jonghyun was the "maknae" of, boasted of being made up of both established and well known musicians from within the Korean music industry, including: Lee Juk, Yoo Hee Yeol, and Yoon Jong Shin. It was reported that Jonghyun was chosen as the youngest member of the line up, despite being an idol, due to being well known as an up-and-coming singer-songwriter.[27] The show was aired during the Lunar New Year as a test pilot but never officially picked up to run past its pilot episode.

On January 10, 2015, it was revealed that Jonghyun would be participating in the Mnet's entertainment program 4 Things Show in promotion of his solo debut. His appearance was not only marked as the first episode of the second season, but the first episode of the new year.[28] Taemin, Davichi's Minkyung and Zion.T appeared as Jonghyun's friends during the episode. Later on during the year, it was revealed that Jonghyun would be participating in the debut of the Mnet program, "Monthly Live Connection". The premise of the show revolves around bringing two artists together from different musical backgrounds to collaborate on a song. Jonghyun recorded for the show in September and the recording was edited into a four episode run which aired in October. Jonghyun's collaboration partner for the show was soloist Jung Joon Young.

Radio DJ

Jonghyun currently hosts MBC FM4U's midnight radio show Jonghyun Blue Night.[29] In July 2014, Jonghyun debuted a special corner called "Blue Night Lyrics, That Man's Composition". He announced the project in June 2014, tweeting:

As I started Blue Night, I contemplated on how to incorporate myself well into the program… As expected, the conclusion is communicating with listeners and music! That’s why I have prepared a project where I personally write a song pertaining to a listener’s story and let you hear it. The name of the corner is ‘Blue Night Lyrics, That Man Composition’. It won’t be aired every week, but it will be aired once every few months as a special corner, so please send in a lot of stories. I’m accepting stories through the homepage.

As of September 2015, the special corner has taken place four times in total with nine songs being released that were all either: completely written and composed by Jonghyun, or written by Jonghyun with the composition help of his composition group, WeFreaky.[30]

Personal life

On October 27, 2010, it was confirmed that Jonghyun was in a relationship with actress Shin Se-kyung.[31] The couple dated quietly before it was confirmed that they had broken up in June 2011.[32]

Jonghyun sustained ligament injuries to his left ankle after he was mobbed by excited fans following Shinee's performance at the Korea-Indonesia Sharing Friendship Concert on October 12, 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia.[33] As a result, Jonghyun was unable to dance alongside his fellow group members for several months.[34][35] Subsequently, Jonghyun also had to receive surgery to repair the damage.[36]

On April 1, 2013, Jonghyun was involved in a car accident, but did not sustain any major injuries.[37][38]
