Legoland New York[b] is a theme park in Goshen, New York, themed after the Lego[c] toy brand. Many elements of the park are made to look like the toy and visitors are given many opportunities to interact with it. The park cost $500 million and took five years to construct.[3] Catering for kids ages 2 to 12 years old,[4] and Lego enthusiasts. The park opened on May 20, 2021[5] for people who purchased exclusive "1st to play" passes,[6] while on May 29, 2021 for the general public.[7] Becoming the first new outdoor theme park addition to the northeast in decades.[8] It is owned by Merlin Entertainments[9] and is the ninth Legoland park worldwide. In the United States, it is the third park following Legoland California (1999), and Legoland Florida (2011).[10]

History

Proposals for a third Legoland location in the United States began in October 2015, when Merlin Entertainments proposed to construct a resort in Haverstraw, Rockland County. That would include a theme park, water park, Sea Life aquarium, and hotel.[11] But plans were immediately withdrew due to immense resident concerns. At least 200 Rockland County residents worried about traffic, pollution, noise, property, and use on public services.[12]

On May 26, 2016, Legoland New York was reconsidered in the town of Goshen, New York, because of the additional land available in the area, as well as the proximity to the New York metropolitan area.[13][14] This Legoland will still have a theme park and Sea Life but will exclude the water park.[15][16]

On October 19, 2017, the Town of Goshen approved plans for the park and six days later on October 25, 2017, Merlin Entertainments officially announced Legoland New York, a 500-acre theme park with a 250-room Legoland hotel.[17][18] Construction started soon afterward.

Shortly after, on October 25, 2017, the New York Empire State Development supported the project by setting aside $10 million to support the expected vehicle traffic. This included the reconstruction of exit 125 on Route 17[19] as well as widening roads.[20] This will all bring Route 17 closer to a National Interstate Designation on Interstate 86 (Pennsylvania–New York).[21]

In late 2019, it was announced that the resort was to open to the general public on July 4, 2020, to coincide with Independence Day.[22]

On March 31, 2020, due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York of 2020, construction on the project was halted, and a new opening time period of early 2021 was announced.[23][24][25]

During time periods in December 2020 and January 2021, pass holders who purchased their passes in 2019 were given exclusive access inside the first two lands, Brick Street and Bricktopia. Guests were able to look around the two lands and purchase food and merchandise, but no rides were open.[26]

On February 19, 2021, the New York State Government announced family attractions will reopen, confirming a Legoland opening of 2021.[27]

On April 9, 2021, New York family attractions reopened for the first time since the pandemic. Legoland was clear to open and its safety plan has been accepted by the New York State Government.[28]

On May 19, 2021, Legoland New York announced its official plan to open the park in phases due to construction delays, as well as opening reservations and ticket purchases for pass holders and the public.[29][30]

On May 20, 2021, Legoland New York opened for "1st to play" pass holders who paid additional in 2019 for special access to a event before official park opening.[31] Lego City and Lego Pirates were completely off limits during this time.[32]

Following that week, on May 29, 2021, Legoland New York officially opened to the general public and other pass holders.[33] This was a soft opening, since Lego Pirates and part of Lego City was still in construction and the park needed to learn about how COVID precautions and elements in the park would work.[34] In conjunction, ticket prices were reduced to half[35] of the planned ticket prices.[36] The Legoland Hotel was also delayed, with all of these opening later in the summer.[37][38]

Finally, on July 9th,[39][40][41] after 4 years of construction, Legoland New York fully opened[42][43][44][45] with all seven lands and corresponding rides open.[46][47][48][49] Ticket prices returned to normal and the park began to open daily. The Legoland hotel was still not open and is slated to open on August 6th, concluding the park construction period.[50][51][52][53]

Park layout and rides

The park feature's seven themed areas (or "land's") that each serve different purposes to the park. In addition to a fully themed Legoland Hotel built for kids and families. Most lands and rides are found at most existing Legoland parks around the world. The land's are separated by a hill and each land connects to each other in a circle.[54] Most land's are based on Lego toy themes, part of the largest Legoland ever built in the world.[55] There are 15,000 real Lego models of different sizes made up of a total of 30 million Lego bricks.[56] The park itself covers 150 acres (61 ha) on a land of 500 acres (200 ha) that gives the ability for further expansion.[57]
