22nd May Accident Coverage[edit]

The claims of one Mr Leo Saldhana have been presented as "fact" without citation. Similar claims have been made elsewhere and have been rebutted effectively in the comments section. We are disputing the neutrality of the news coverage being presented in this article,; tagging it for missing citations; and tagging it for non-conformance to wikipedia presentation standards. International??[edit]

Its true that there are some flights to gulf countries. But the name of airport has not been renamed as International airport. It is still called as Mangalore Airport only.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Crazysoul (talk) 14:17, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, it currently is enjoying a status that of an customs aerodrome. It is supposed to get international status in February '09 as per a recent report in the newspapers.--PremKudvaTalk 09:57, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think the official name of this article should refer to the airport as Mangalore Airport or mangalore Bajpe airport. AAI database calls it managlore airport http://www.aai.aero/allAirports/mangalore_generalinfo.jsp

This article specifically suggests that the airport does not have international status http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mangalore/International-airport-status-may-be-delayed/articleshow/5962493.cms —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.131.247.201 (talk) 09:09, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also ICAO database lists it as Mangalore Airport http://www.partow.net/miscellaneous/airportdatabase/index.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.16.73.17 (talk) 09:21, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The official name of the airport is Mangalore Airport, and the title of this article should be thus. However someone had started the article with the International added in 2006. I left it alone since the news kept saying that the airport will be getting International status 'soon'. But with Saturday's accident I don't think it will be made into one. Do change the article name. Also note that Mangalore Airport points to a disamb page for the airports in Victorian and Mangalore. So you should call it Mangalore Airport, India or something like that.--PremKudvaTalk 10:40, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mangalore Bajpe Airport would seem to be the correct title. It is the title used by Aviation Safety Network in their article on the recent accident. This is probably best dealt with via WP:RM rather than an editor being bold and moving the article. Mjroots (talk) 07:27, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As per the Airports Authority of India the name is Mangalore. So I suggest Mangalore Airport, India.--PremKudvaTalk 04:44, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yup.. its better to rename teh article as Mangalore Airport, India --Crazysoul (talk) 11:05, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Time to update and drop International. 119.155.43.34 (talk) 14:50, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with sticking to the term in Airports Authority of India website. An airport may be defacto International one but the international tag to the name needs to come from the AAI. rams81 (talk) 21:41, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The name has not officially changed. So, only Mangalore Airport is appropriate as title. Joyson Noel Holla at me! 22:08, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Distances from Mangalore airport to nearby places[edit]

I am deleting the Distances from Mangalore airport to nearby places section. It is not required. And consistent with other Indian airport articles.--PremKudvaTalk 10:10, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why not there be direct flight, from Mangalore to Hyderabad and return, either nonstop or via Bangalore, or Chennai or Mumbai or Goa. I feel concerned authorities should try for such a route combination. Definitely it should work out.117.195.201.229 (talk) 14:49, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake in the infobox as to runway labeling -- 10/28[edit]

From the layout of the airport, the new runway cannot be 10/28. It's more like 04/22. Furthermore, on Google Earth, I can make out the "0" on one end and the leading "2" on the other, but not the remaining digits. I think this is cause enough to fix this mistake and I am changing the designation to 04/22. I was unable to find any sourcing other than direct inspection of satellite imagery. The situation is timely considering the Air India Express Flight 812 runway overrun crash. --Mareklug talk 04:53, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The runway is 06/24. You can verify the magnetic heading in eg. google earth Oempapa (talk) 08:21, 22 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mangalore International AirportMangalore Airport, India — Relisted. Vegaswikian (talk) 07:18, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The airport is not called international airport yet, currently it is officially called Mangalore Airport. PremKudvaTalk 04:48, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. It is always a surprise to some, but this proposal is in direct opposition to the current official Wikipedia policy, see Wikipedia:official names for an informal explanation of why this is so. Andrewa (talk) 15:20, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree with you about Wikipedia:official names in principle but the current article title, Mangalore International Airport, doesn't seem to be in common use either. A few sources use it but it's not widespread. What is your basis for advocating this name? — AjaxSmack 16:14, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • I'm afraid you're misquoting me there, I'm not advocating this name above, I'm opposing a move proposal that appears to be entirely based on a misconception. Thanks for your (valid) arguments above and below, but there does also seem to be something to be said for the current name or perhaps a variant of it, see below. No change of vote. Andrewa (talk) 17:40, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support a move to Mangalore Airport (India) (DAB format) or even just Mangalore Airport (the current DAB page) per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC since Mangalore Airport (Australia) is a pretty minor outfit. The current title isn't official and doesn't appear to be in widespread usage at least in the sources for the article or in a cursory news search. — AjaxSmack 16:14, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment: However, Mangalore Airport is still ambiguous, while the current title is not, and the current title may not be official, but it's accurate in that this Mangalore Airport is an international airport and apparently the only one by that name. Perhaps Mangalore international airport would be a bettter title? Andrewa (talk) 17:40, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No consensus: Since there is no consensus and also since there seems to be no dis-agreement in having the original name, I propose that the rename move be dropped. Since I proposed the requested move someone else will have to close this discussion.--PremKudvaTalk 10:32, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How about swapping it with the aerial photo in the new terminal section?--PremKudvaTalk 05:44, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For the time swapping wud be fine. But it looks great from entry side. I forgot to click when i last visited as i was in a hurry. --Crazysoul (talk) 10:33, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have not been to the airport in ages. The last I visited was the old terminal. Tarmac site photo would look great.--PremKudvaTalk 04:58, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mangalore International AirportMangalore Airport, India

It is Customs Airport so international flights can operate,http://164.100.47.132/LssNew/psearch/QResult15.aspx?qref=78747 not international airport. Runway length of 9000 ft is required to qualify as international airport. So please rename this article. Skeeptend (talk) 04:49, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it is a customs airport. But I repeat that the title is different from the tag an airport can have. Your rationale that since it is a customs airport, it should be renamed is incorrect. So do you mean that if an airport does not have the word International in its name is not an international airport? Please bring out a better rationale and a better updated source to back up your claim. We name airport articles per the official name which are in IATA and ICAO databases. In some cases we can't even use AAI's website as they haven't updated info on many airports (Bangalore being the best example).  Abhishek  Talk 14:55, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps we could wait, I just read this couple of days back.--PremKudvaTalk 11:55, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AAI website also says just "Mangalore Airport", doesnt say international http://www.aai.aero/allAirports/mangalore_generalinfo.jspSkeeptend (talk) 04:51, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, let's wait till 60th Anniversary of the airport in December 2011. rams81 (talk) 16:42, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why was this section used for the rename, since it's over a year-and-a-half old. The requested move should have been in a new section at the bottom of the talk page, especially since the 2010 requested move occurs in a section below this one. 76.65.128.198 (talk) 10:30, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I notice that there seems to be a confusion among the above editors in differentiating an airport's title from its tag (classification). If an airport has the "International" in its title, it need not be an international airport, but could be a customs airport (eg: Mangalore and Pune airports). On the same grounds, if an airport does not have the word "International", it does not mean it is not an International airport (eg Heathrow Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport). So what we need here is the official name of the airport and not change its title based on its classification.
@Skeeptend, AAI shows Bangalore's Bengaluru International Airport as Bangalore International, Agatti's Agatti Aerodrome as Agatti Airport, Coimbatore's Coimbatore Airport as Civil Aerodrome, Coimbatore, etc. These were just some examples. What I am trying to point out is that AAI has not updated info on some airports, the best example being Bangalore's. So we need to dig out information about the airports from IATA or ICAO and what's present in their databast is the official name of the airport.  Abhishek  Talk 13:43, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tulu script[edit]

I do not see any reason why a Tulu script transliteration ought to be provided here. It's usage is currently extinct, and i doubt that even the Tuluvas, save for any learned linguist among them, can read it. I have not been able to find any modern literature written in the script, except for a book about how to use it Tulu Lipi Akshara Mala by Venkataraja Puninchithaya. Any opinions? Joyson Noel Holla at me! 10:03, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • See already Kannada script is provided in article, again it is repeated in Tulu multilingual support with Kannada script. I’m not opposing Tulu, but script should be from Tulu if it is separate multilingual support, why to repeat the same with Kannada script. Do you feel repeating same script for two multilingual supports is meaningful.Prasannatb (talk) 18:15, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that the script is not used in Tulu literature, newspapers and journals. So what's the point in using the script when probably 99.9 % of the Tuluvas can't even read or write in it, and most importantly, how do you expect someone to provide transliteration when that is the case? Joyson Noel Holla at me! 18:29, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As Kannada script is repeated for two multilingual supports, i think repeating two times the same script does not look meaningful, otherwise only one should be present Kannada or Tulu. so your wish keep it. I'm feeling like you are making it chaos by commenting on my small mistakes on wall and reverting my changes to article. Prasannatb (talk) 18:52, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds exactly the same in Tulu and Kannada so it is redundant having both. Why not mention "Kannada and Tulu" instead? Also so far as I know no one here calls the airport anything but in English and Kannada, if it was in Tulu we should have called it "Kudla Airport", and Konkani "Kodial Airport". If you ask me English and Kannada are enough.--PremKudvaTalk 03:52, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I concur! Initially, i was all for the transliteration being only in Kannada. However, later on some anon IP kept persistently adding the Tulu transliteration, even after myself reverting it. So, i decided to let it be. Feel free to remove it. Joyson Noel Holla at me! 13:38, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mangaluru AirportMangalore Airport – The Airports Authority of India website seems inaccurate with names of airports. There is a constant change in the name of Indian airports. About a year ago, IXE was listed as Mangaluru Airport (the current name), a few days back (not sure exactly till when), it listed this airport as Mangalore Airport, now it is Mangalore International Airport. To counter this constant change from AAI, I believe, it's best to rely on IATA (http://www.iata.org/publications/Pages/code-search.aspx - please search using location code and enter IXE). IATA lists the name of this airport as Mangalore Airport.  LeoFrank  Talk 14:43, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment on the above move request - Dekimasu you mentioned here that the move to Mangaluru Airport was not appropriate given the previous RMs, but it is also the case that the earlier pair of moves was not appropriate, given the previous conensus from 2016 to include "International". I have therefore reverted back to the name from the 2016 RM, and I believe subsequent moves from there should be subject to RM. Certainly there are high quality sources which use the name, so it's not uncontroversial to have moved it.[2][3] Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 21:22, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't object personally, but I think the current proposal (which included a rationale for excluding "International") and the following comment in support could have been taken as sufficient to establish Mangalore Airport as the new name for the article. Dekimasuよ! 21:45, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Amakuru: When I reverted the move of Vijaywada International Airport to Vijaywada Airport, you moved back the page staying that since an RM was closed as move, I need to have another RM to move the title back to Vijaywada Airport (the official) despite the fact that the closing admin did not even check if there were sources stating that there has been a rename of the airport. But here, you just go against the move and move the page back to Mangalore International Airport which is not the name of the airport. My question, why haven't you started an RM and why did you just revert out of no reason. My reversion of the move was based on facts in Vijaywada Airport case, but here, you had no source to state the renaming of the airport, and just blatantly reverted the title.  LeoFrank  Talk 11:56, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 19 June 2018[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Not moved. There is no consensus for the proposed move, after extended discussion. bd2412 T 03:42, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mangalore International AirportMangalore Airport – Please see the previous move request (despite which Amakuru reverted the move) and also, per the official IATA website (search with Location code=IXE), the name of this airport is Mangalore Aiport. Please also refer to this move request for more details on why the name is incorrect.  LeoFrank  Talk 14:47, 19 June 2018 (UTC)--Relisting. Dekimasuよ! 19:15, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. Baseless and repetitive renomination. Andrewa (talk) 17:28, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • To be fair, the previous nomination resulted in a move to the title that's requested here. Based upon related discussions, User:CookieMonster755 might have an opinion on this request. Dekimasuよ! 19:13, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrewa: Baseless? If so, why don't you provide a source where it mentions the name has been changed? Are you aware of WP:AVIMOS? Have you gone through the details presented at this move request?  LeoFrank  Talk 02:57, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Neither that style guide nor Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Style guide/Naming (Airports) to which it links as a main page have any status as Wikipedia naming conventions, they are both (at best) drafts under (stalled) discussion. You need to justify your move proposal in terms of WP:AT (and/or its many official subpages), or of course appeal to WP:IAR (but in view of the previous moves and discussions, without strong reasons that might even be seen as disruptive). Until and unless you do that, this RM is indeed in my opinion baseless.
If on the other hand you produce relevant arguments, I will of course reconsider my !vote in the light of them. Andrewa (talk) 04:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrewa: Please substantiate what you mean by relevant? All the arguments presented are relevant. Please counter with your arguments if you feel they are not relevant. All the facts are presented in the respective talk pages.  LeoFrank  Talk 06:25, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What I mean by relevant is consistent with Wikipedia's article title policy. Have you read it? The arguments you have advanced seem to ignore it completely. Andrewa (talk) 08:40, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This article's move to the current title is actually WP:IAR. If WP:AVIMOS is only a draft, then please challenge it. I basically see a hatred towards WP:AVIATION in general, so everything seems irrelevant.  LeoFrank  Talk 06:27, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm very sorry you feel that way.
But have you yourself read WP:AVIMOS? Is so, did you see at the top of the section WP:AVIMOS#Airports Main page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Style guide/Naming (Airports)? Did you then see at the top of that page At present, this is an early working draft for correctly naming airport articles. It is incomplete and suggestions may change as consensus develops. (my emphasis) Did you follow the link I gave to Category:Wikipedia naming conventions? Do I need to further explain why I have concluded that WP:AVIMOS has no authority? Andrewa (talk) 08:46, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would support a moratorium on move requests for some extended period after this one ends. There have now been 7 in total and 4 in the last two years, mostly related to adding or removing "International", plus out-of-process moves in the meantime. On the plus side the page is already indefinitely move protected. Dekimasuよ! 19:17, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - The WP:COMMONNAME of the associated city is Mangalore. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 10:56, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose per the above reasoning.--Jetstreamer Talk 13:53, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. Rather name it Mangalore Airport which is the registered name per IATA.

Mangalore International AirportMangaluru International Airport – In general (for the city), I agree that Mangalore is still more common than Mangaluru. For the airport, Mangaluru is more common (Google: 14.3M (Mangalore) vs 15.4M (Mangaluru) results) and is the official name of the airport. It is also the name of the operator that manages the airport. Mangaluru is also the stated name in the logo and in the website. 103.37.49.211 (talk) 02:19, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
