A cupcake for you!

[edit]
So glad to finally meet you at Wikipedia Day 16 LA! Rosiestep (talk) 03:13, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

In noticed you left an editors note at the "notable people" section at Middletown, Connecticut that said "please put source footnote ONLY for names with no article. Blue links sufficiently denote notability." Where was consensus reached to add this to articles? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:20, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

I have no idea whether there is consensus or not; it just seems eminently sensible to me, so I have been adopting it whenever I have occasion to edit such a section. I see it on a lot of pages, so I figured it was becoming a common and uncontroversial practice. Cheers, Alafarge (talk) 21:49, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
The problem is it encourages editors to do circular sourcing, and to assume that what is on one Wikipedia article must be true, so it's ok to add it to a different Wikipedia article. In my experience, at any given notable people section about 25 percent of the names listed have no connection to the article they were added to. Also, names without articles should not be randomly be added to a notable people list just because they have a source. Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline states that having a wiki article "is not the sole rationale for inclusion, since some people who might meet notable standards may not have an article, but it is a quick reference. If challenged, additions without their own article should be removed and discussed on the talk page of the city, until a consensus is reached." Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:55, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
I agree that adding red-link names to lists is bad practice and I never do it. With respect to your other point: I understand the concern over circular sourcing, but it seems to me that sourcing blue links in notable-people lists just bulks out the references section for the small gain of not clicking through to check the source on the named page. If there's no source there substantiating the connection, then by all means remove the name. In any case, I don't feel strongly about this either way. Cheers, Alafarge (talk) 14:27, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Pennington

[edit]

Hello, It says she was born Sarah Moore. If she had been the daughter of a Duke, Marquess, or Earl she would in her own right have been known as Lady Sarah Moore, so with no information on her father we can assume that they were both commoners. On her marriage to a baronet she becomes Sarah, Lady Pennington; jointly they would be referred to as Sir Joseph and Lady Pennington. Knights and baronets are not nobility.--Johnsoniensis (talk) 19:34, 18 October 2017 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Saturday Evening Quill cover 1929.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Saturday Evening Quill cover 1929.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 20:27, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

I have added a non-free magazine cover rationale template to the page. Alafarge (talk) 20:53, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in study

[edit]

Hello,

I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. A full write-up of the study can be found here: m:Research:Civil_Behavior_Interviews. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview.

Thank you Ewitch51 (talk) 19:32, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Compliments!

[edit]

Thank you, thank you!! For all the work you have done on women in science, and women in general. I've been mostly absent from Wikipedia lately, but I did (some time ago) create a section on my talk page of women in ecology that shows red links. (Sorry, can't figure out how to link to it.) It's far from complete, but a bit of a "to-do" list for anyone who wants to add in that field. Thought you might like to see it.

Thanks especially for the page on Lois Hattery Tiffany. There's a profile you might like on the ESA.org/history website -- with a speech she gave about women's careers.

Keep up the terrific work!

More visibility

[edit]

"I started a side project that spins out of my Wikipedia work, aimed at (eventually) publishing or helping to make public more materials from archives about women" is exactly what we are proposing to do here [1], we're probably going to rename the group, but the goal is to work on improving resources and visibility. I think you'd be an asset, if you have interest. SusunW (talk) 18:07, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

: Thanks for pointing me to this. Yes, I'm indeed interested and will sign on now, though I won't have much time until next month. Alafarge (talk) 15:01, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Rosiestep is at the conference in South Africa for the next two weeks anyway. Hopefully she will return with information that will help us kickstart the library discussions into high gear. DYK

[edit]

I nominated an article of yours at Template:Did you know nominations/Marquise Clara Lanza. Feel free to add suggestions. SL93 (talk) 01:56, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

SL93: Nice thought! And thanks for renaming the article to omit her title— I had drafted with the title thinking it was part of her pen name and forgot to double-check when I made the page live. Alafarge (talk) 21:12, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
You're welcome. It was the DYK reviewer who let me know. :) I'm working on citing her books. It usually isn't necessary, but I know how people in DYK can be with references. SL93 (talk) 21:14, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Clara Lanza

[edit]

On 6 December 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Clara Lanza, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a book chapter by Clara Lanza about the women clerks of New York was published as a souvenir of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Clara Lanza), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
