GTCs

Hi. I noticed you made a Good Topic Nominee just recently. While its great to see new potential topics being considered, we are currently in a bit of a trudge in terms of discussion for some of the candidates. If you would be interested in looking at the other topic nominations? It would be helpful for the project and very much appreciated. Cheers. GamerPro64 00:34, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

@GamerPro64: Wait, what you're saying is just that I should also review other nominations? That's fine. I didn't do anything wrong or have to hold off on nominating? Your message was somewhat unclear.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 00:38, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
I mean you don't have to. Just a suggestion. Just wondering if you would be interested in reviewing some of these. GamerPro64 00:45, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
@GamerPro64: Done.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 18:53, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your inputs in the nominations. GamerPro64 02:55, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, no problem.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 03:00, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Heh

I stole some of your pictures. Is that ok? If it isn't, I'll take it off my userpage. Awesomeninja1589 (talk) 23:05, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

@Awesomeninja1589: Totally cool with it. ɱ (talk · vbm) 23:25, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Voice Recording bounty

Hey Ɱ, Just wondering about the bounty for the voice recordings of articles from the briarcliff manor book, Could I redeem my reward in GBP instead of USD? Thanks, TF { Contribs } 15:27, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

@Titusfox: The bounty was one ten-dollar iTunes gift card. I've already purchased three, which is why I set the limit at three. The cards have a disclaimer that says "Valid only on iTunes Store for U.S." So assuming that you live in the UK, I doubt the cards will work for you. I can probably PayPal you $10 per recording instead, if that works for you.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 21:10, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

Photo requests in Westchester County, NY and Greenwich, CT

Hi! Do you do photo requests in Westchester County, NY and Greenwich, CT? If so I have some ideas.

WhisperToMe (talk) 05:00, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe: I'll reply via email, if that's okay.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 21:12, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
@WhisperToMe: Also, you should probably move White Plains Senior High School using the move tool to White Plains High School, as it appears the latter is the correct name for the school. I cannot without an administrator such as yourself.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 21:18, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

Pizza

Hi, thanks for you input on editing the pizza article. What do you think of this picture as the main pizza picture in the infobox? I think it's a good representation of pizza, as it doesn't have any toppings, has an even distribution of cheese and sauce, and it has a crust that's neither very fluffy or very thin. JosephSpiral (talk) 22:52, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

@JosephSpiral: Yes it has even distribution of cheese and sauce and its crust is okay, but as a photographer I can tell you that the photograph is really bad. It has a number of flaws that make it technically inferior to most others I've seen in the infobox recently. As well, the overall quality is pretty poor, which would make the pizza article look less professional. I was okay with the one I just put in and the one you just replaced it with, but you or I will probably be able to find an even better one; I can take a look tomorrow night. As for toppings, I prefer the photo to include them because, more often than not, pizza will have toppings on it. Therefore an infobox photo showing toppings will be more representative of the typical pizza.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 23:07, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
, I agree with you regarding the quality of the photo. That's something I also started to realize after viewing it again. I agree that having toppings in the photo would be a good representation of pizza, and the current photo I put in the infobox is both high quality and has toppings. The one that I replaced (the one from the UK with a woman sitting in front of it) was a very poor representation of pizza and resembled microwavable pizza. Also, there is a photo in the Preparation section of a cooked pizza with pepperoni. However, the pepperoni looks burnt, and if you come across a photo that can replace it, that would be great. Thanks. JosephSpiral (talk) 23:16, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

reward board request

Per your request at the reward board, I've commented here. Chris Troutman (talk) 22:12, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for that assessment!

First, do not revert me without comment. I am not a vandal. Second, if you're going to add that kind of nonsense to an article, at least cite some sources. Josh Milburn (talk) 21:52, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

@J Milburn:: Sorry about that; I had honestly meant to click the standard revert button which would allow me to comment. I was sort-of angry anyway, so when I saw it wasn't going to let me comment, I didn't do anything further like writing on your talk. Anyway, I thought it was bad for you to delete a whole section just because it doesn't have citations. The information in that section is still WP:Verifiable, so your deletion is completely without grounds.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 22:38, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
I didn't remove it because it was without citations (though I did say that you have a responsibility to provide citations if you're adding it back). I removed it because, as far as I can see, it's irrelevant, trivial nonsense (see also...). The two are related, of course- if you can't find a good reference, then it's pretty clearly irrelevant (and it may be even if you can find a reference). Does someone coming to read about Amuse-bouche really care that a fictional restaurant review once made a pun on the name? Or that Monica Gellar once cooked one? Major cultural impact probably belongs in an article- Skippy deserves a mention in our article on kangaroos, and Jaws belongs in our article on Great Whites. But the fact Monica Gellar once ate kangaroo meat or AbFab made a joke about Great Whites doesn't really belong there. If it belongs anywhere, and it may not, it's in the articles on the respective episodes. Josh Milburn (talk) 02:22, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
@J Milburn: You make a good point. I didn't realize how trivial the pop culture references were.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 23:08, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Hello MJ. Can you tell me why User: BM Ken has removed my vote? I like the picture with the Beautiful Blue Sky! 125.209.88.46 (talk) 23:12, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

@125.209.88.46: Well, he called you a "troll", which is pretty unfair in my opinion. As well, he said you're using an ipen proxy (open proxy?), which shouldn't discount your vote.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 23:18, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Just FYI

I've been the subject of harassment from someone who uses open proxy IPs. BMK (talk) 23:16, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Where? Also BMK, don't remove things from my talk page. That's something only I have the right to do. I can pull up policies, if you'd like.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 23:18, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Voice Recording

You said here that you were needing someone to do article recording. I could hopefully work on that over the summer. This would be my first time doing something like this so you would need to give me pointers. I do have a good audio device available.--Airplane Maniac (talk) 16:51, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

@Airplane Maniac: Wow, thanks! It may be good to read a few guidelines on the matter. I can sum up some important details on recording below:
  • Add a half second of silence at the beginning of your sound file. This will eliminate buffering ‘hiccups,’ which may cause the first syllable in your spoken article to be inaudible as the file begins to stream (play).
  • Properly format the filename. The filename must be prefixed by "En-" to show that the recording is in English. Followed by the article title in canonicalized form. Finally the suffix "-article" plus the oggextension. Example: En-Sample_lemma-article.ogg
  • Treat links like text when reading. Any vocal indication of every link would disrupt the flow.
  • Speak more slowly than normal, by about 25%. You should have about 150–160 words per minute so people can comfortably hear an article. Most conversational speech is at 200 words per minute or more.
  • Tell people where it's from. Begin your recordings with:
"Article name, from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, at E N dot wikipedia dot org."
  • Read out all headings as you come to them like this: "Section one: History", "Section two: Modern uses" etc. To make it easier to remember the numbering, go to your preferences, and under "Appearance" check the box "Auto-number headings".
  • Tell people how it's licensed. Wikipedia articles are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Spoken versions are derivative works, so end your recordings with:
"This sound file and all text in the article are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License, available at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0"
Then all of these production tips are useful, and more information on recording the article can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia/Reading Guidelines. I can try to help with any questions you may have. Thank you again.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 20:42, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
If you want, I can help you write up a script to read out.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 20:50, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
That would be great! I think we should do that, at least for the first article. Then, after that, we can determine if it is still needed. Just a note though, I may not be able to start for a week or two. I need to finish up with school, then I will begin recording. I may also be busy, but I will do my best.--Airplane Maniac (talk) 21:00, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
I understand that; I'm awfully busy myself. On average I only have a day off once every six or seven workdays.Sounds good. ɱ (talk · vbm) 21:18, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
Here is a link to a script for the History of Briarcliff Manor article, feel free to make any changes. link.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 13:12, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

FAC

Hi. I saw your offer at the reward board regarding your FAC. I went to the reward board as I was posting a similar offer myself for my FAC. Just throwing it out there - if you comment on mine i'll comment on yours. Mine is here. If you choose to comment on it, do not fell obligated to support. I want the article to be as good as possible, so if you oppose the nomination with constructive criticism, I would prefer that to no comments at all, but no hard feelings if you're not interested in this offer. Have a nice day. Freikorp (talk) 11:43, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Briarcliff High School

If you would like to see my ongoing notes before I clean them up and post them on the talk page, you can always check out my personal notes on the article. I just didn't want my stream of consciousness to clog the BHS talk page before I get a chance to clean it up and/or change my mind about certain revisions. Read at your own risk, and all I ask is that you don't make any major revisions until I am done with the copy edit. After that, I would also be more than willing to help out with the FA process! :) -Pax85 (talk) 19:23, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello! While I respect that you may not agree with my approach to cleaning up the Moyers Corners Fire Department page, characterizing it as "Massive hardly substantiated page blanking" I think is a big extreme. Each of my edits had a clear edit summary and more than 50% of the material I removed was completely plagiarized, word for word which is of course not allowed. I agree that the page is now a fraction of what it once was, but given that it was mostly plagiarized and just a list of individual members... Anyway, hope you are doing well. --—Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:04, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

@Zackmann08: I'll respond to this more and/or make changes when I have time. In short, you should just reword the plagiarized content instead of virtually blanking the page. Why remove all of the external links and other useful bits (e.g. sports info) too?--ɱ (talk · vbm) 04:15, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
Well most of the other stuff was not relevant. A list of how the department's softball team did? Seriously... How is that encyclopedic. WP:NOTABLOG would seem to apply here. Of the 3 external links, 1 was the link to the towns home page (why is that needed?), one was a link to the departments softball team, and the final one was moved to the infobox. --—Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:19, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited MetLife, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Barron's and Alico. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

A summary of a Featured Article you nominated at WP:FAC will appear on the Main Page soon. It mostly follows the lead section; how does it look? - Dank (push to talk) 15:56, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

@Dank: Your changes are good, thanks! I have no suggestions on improving it.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 21:35, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
One more thing, I'm starting to play around with adding something colorful as the last sentence, when that's possible ... for this one, I've added "Deeply religious, Shepard became the controlling stockholder of the Fifth Avenue Stage Company so he could force theaters to close on Sundays; he was also a stern opponent of antisemitism." Does that strike you as accurate and balanced? - Dank (push to talk) 14:48, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
@Dank: "Stage" referred to stagecoaches, not theaters. Otherwise that's all fine.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 14:54, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
Aha! Glad I checked ... I misunderstood, and so did Xanth-something, the writer of the relevant blurb for this week's Featured Content in the Signpost, you might want a leave a note on that talk page. Do you know if he gained control of any other companies to shut them down on Sundays? - Dank (push to talk) 14:56, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
@Dank: Thanks for letting me know. Sources only list the one company, which was likely the only one Shepard cared about, given that his house was on 5th Ave.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 15:02, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Help with MetLife?

Hi Ɱ! You've been so helpful in reviewing my work in the past, so I'm reaching out to you regarding a new project that I'm hoping you might have a little time to help with. I've suggested some changes to the article for MetLife, specifically in the History section, but thus far I haven't gotten a bite from any editors. Could you take a look here, if you have a moment?

If the MetLife one seems like a bit more than you can take on at the moment, I do have a draft for an article that has already been reviewed closely by two editors and is ready to go live in place of the existing version, however the first editor who reviewed has not been online in months and the second one is unsure how to actually take the draft live. (From their comments to me, I think they have a histmerge in mind as their preferred way to do it, but they can't do that themselves.) That article is Aubrey McClendon and you can see my draft and discussion with the most recent reviewing editor, here. If you're not able to assist on this, any pointers to someone who could would be great.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give, it would be really appreciated! 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 17:03, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

@16912 Rhiannon: Sure, I'll look them both over and see how I can help. It may take a few days.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 21:35, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
That would be wonderful, thanks so so much! 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:58, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
@16912 Rhiannon: Okay, I started with McClendon, and made changes. I feel the 'Business Career' section could be tightened up quite a bit. Some of the phrasing seems a bit promotional and, I don't know, far from ideal. Let me know what you think, and I'll take a look at MetLife.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 00:39, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Ack, I totally missed your note here when I was looking at the Aubrey draft yesterday--so I'm really sorry if my comment on the draft's Talk seemed to totally ignore this feedback. I'll dive back into it today and see what I think can be tightened. Any pointers you can give on what particular sections or paragraphs you were concerned about? Thanks again! 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 13:39, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Hi again! I've made some edits in the draft to try and tighten things, and trim down a couple of bits I was on the fence about. There are some quotes / praise in there that I'm still wavering on: on the one hand they demonstrate McClendon's standing in the industry, on the other, I can see they might come across as being puff. If there were specific areas you felt needed some trims, let me know and I'd be happy to take another look. Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 14:38, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
@16912 Rhiannon: Thanks, looks good.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 01:18, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Crests

Hi. Sorry to bother you about something so old, but a couple of years ago you edited the crest article to add a section on the use of crests in the Roman military. Do you have a more specific source than "Vegetius writings and some sculptures"? I'm currently in the process of overhauling the article, so it'd be helpful if I had a formal citation. Thanks. Zacwill16 (talk) 16:26, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

@Zacwill16: I wish I could help you more. I found that I had copied that text from the article "Galea (helmet)", which has had that text since 2006, when the page was moved around a few times. I can't find who originally added it or when. Perhaps try books on the Roman Army; they should describe crests in good detail.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 03:06, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
It seems to have been user:RedMC, but he's been blocked. Great. Cheers for trying to help anyway. Zacwill16 (talk) 11:28, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

World Trade Center (2001–present)

When I look at the revision history at World Trade Center (2001–present), I see an edit by you (rev 675599561) that consists of some cat repair and some vandalism. When I undid it, it undid the cat repair but left the vandalism. Looking at your user page, it really doesn't look like you are a vandal. I wonder if you see the same thing, and what happened? My guess is it had something to do with the page move that happened a minute later. GrindtXX has since undone the vandalism. Kendall-K1 (talk) 16:55, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

The undo didn't remove the vandalism because, as you note, GrindtXX had already removed it two minutes earlier, and obviously you can't remove something that's not there. I'm also slightly curious about this; it seems entirely out of character. This is the edit in question, by the way. Jenks24 (talk) 17:03, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
@Kendall-K1: @Jenks24: That's pretty funny. I downloaded The Trumpweb Chrome extension a few days ago; it's pretty funny. I guess it's interfering with my Wikipedia edits, so I'm about to remove it. Neat gimmick nonetheless.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 00:12, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Well that explains it. I'll admit I got a chuckle out of it too. Kendall-K1 (talk) 01:32, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Yes, mystery solved. I hadn't seen that extension before now, funny stuff. Jenks24 (talk) 05:22, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Help with another MetLife section?

Hi again Ɱ, thanks for your feedback on the MetLife article last month. I have some changes I'm proposing to the article's Operations section here, and I'd like another pair of eyes if you have the time to help out again. Let me know! Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 16:22, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

I'm still looking for eyes on the Ops section suggestion I've put forward, so let me know if you're able to take a peek or know someone who might be interested. Thanks so much, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 19:48, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
Sure. ɱ (talk · vbm) 21:15, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
Wonderful! I also reached out at COI/N to see if anyone there would like to look over the suggestions, too and I've got one reply so far, which mentions a few things that they think could be addressed within the article. Their note about the demutualization made me go back and look at the History#Expansion and IPO subsection, to see what detail was already there and think about what could be added. On doing so, I realized I made a really dumb error, for which I put my hands up: when I added back the term "demutualization", I managed to add it and the new source in completely the wrong sentence. It should not be in the sentence about Executive Life, but in the one about the IPO. Basically, the word "demutualization" should be deleted from where it is now, and it should be added to the IPO sentence per the below:
After announcing in 1998 that it planned to go public during the next two years,[1] in 2000, the company followed through on the planned demutualization.[2][3]
I'm so glad for that editors' feedback to make me go back and look at this, since fixing this will ensure that section makes much more sense! Would you be able to make this update? So sorry about this! 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:01, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

Boston Fire Department image I added but abruptly reverted by you

Hello. Without discussion, you made some kind of quite subjective judgment about the image I added to the Boston Fire Department article. One supposes you had some basis for it, in fact as you stated in the edit comment, as "not useful", "poor color-saturation" (that's arguable), "poor balance" (hmm ... this is getting a bit "textbook"), and the like. So I reverted your reversion. If you revert it again we can let it go, or we can go to a third party. You revert a lot, looking at your recent edits. It just seemed your reversion was a tad bit facile.

Quoting your comment on the reversion edit you made: "(Not helpful here as a barely comprehensive image of one standard firetruck of the many in the BFD; also very poor saturation and color balance)"

@Wikiklrsc: Dude, I don't care if you're the founder of Wikipedia. There are dozens of better photos (that also happen to show more sides) of BFD trucks. Some of them already are on the article. So can't you tell that yours adds nothing? As well, the encyclopedia should look professionally-made, not slap-dash. So I always aim to remove, sorry, poor photographs from the mainspace if they can be substituted with better ones. It's nothing personal. And I shouldn't have to explain myself, but I've done a whole heck of a lot of content creation, but all I have time for right now is minor cleanup and vandalism/other reversions. ɱ (talk · vbm) 15:53, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments. "Good" photographs would seem to be a judgement call which not everyone might agree on. Is my photo redundant in the article? Perhaps. So be it. --- Wikiklrsc (talk) 16:46, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
@Wikiklrsc: Most photographers will agree that the photo in question is oversaturated and has an improper color balance. The sky is far too teal and the truck is very pink, the two clearest examples of the color being imbalanced. As well, the focus is rather poor overall, and the photo is overexposed. It all lends to a mediocre photograph. Again, I mean no offense, I'm being objective here. Because of that and the redundancy with other photographs, I will remove it if there is no further objection. ɱ (talk · vbm) 17:40, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments again. I understand your points but wouldn't think it was that terribly terribly bad a photograph as a front image of a BFD fire truck. Before removing it, I'd like to gather some other opinions if you wouldn't mind and post it to the administrators' board. Ultimately, it's not a big deal -- you could remove it from the article -- but I'd like to double check if you can hold off removing it. The image itself has been flagged to be copied up to WP Commons. Thanks. --- Wikiklrsc (talk) 19:30, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

Thanks for your kind help in this matter. At this point, I leave it up to you, My apologies for a flip original reply to your reversion. Very Best Wishes and thanks. --- (Bob) Wikiklrsc (talk) 14:23, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks and a question

Hello! Thanks for your comments regarding my changes to the "Combi steamer" page. I'll rework the humidity info and place it in the area you recommended.

You're more experienced in Wikipedia editing than me, so I'm wondering - what is the rationale behind listing one manufacturer as "Worldwide" when there are a number of manufacturers that sell these units worldwide? If Rational AG is listed as "worldwide", why not Electrolux, LG, and the like?

Also - why not alphabetize the list of producers by country?

Please let me know and thanks again for your help!

WmArbaugh (talk) 13:19, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

@WmArbaugh: As far as I could tell, the list of manufacturers was by their distribution area, but then it seems more manufacturers would be placed in the 'worldwide' category, so I'll add a note that the list is by country of origin. I didn't mean to revert your alphabetization, I'll fix that back. Thank you.--ɱ (talk · vbm) 15:38, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

What was it called prior to being incorporated as North Tarrytown in the 19th century? The area was referred to as "Sleepy Hollow" as early as the Dutch settlers arrived. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.162.221.253 (talk) 21:37, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

"Sleepy Hollow was known as Beekmantown from the end of the Revolutionary War until the 1870s when the name was changed to North Tarrytown. In 1996 the name was changed again--this time to Sleepy Hollow--to commemorate Washington Irving’s tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which took place there." "It is around 1870 that residents began to refer to their village as North Tarrytown, likely due to the incorporation of Tarrytown to Greenburgh; residents began the process of seeking status with Mount Pleasant."
Maps also show it as Beekmantown. ɱ (talk · vbm) 08:30, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
