A right to vanish request
[edit]Hi, I once used my real name as my username. I happen to have a family name which is quite rare in my local language, which subsequently make my full name unique. Due to this silly error, I was once harassed by a fellow wikipedian who digged my personal information from internet. He was subsequently warned. I stopped editing wikipedia actively since then. I would like to request right to vanish so that, at least, my name don't pop up in google search. Am I in the right place to make this request? Bot policy
[edit]There is currently a question over the phrasing in Bot policy about it Bots can empty categories. Way back in 2005 this edit add the clause in question [1], but it doesn't specify what the certain types of person categories are. Do you remember the context of that change? MBisanz talk 00:35, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
- The "certain types of person categories" would be those typed as "Non-'Business Card'", per this edit from mid-2005. I might be able to clarify more if you were to tell me where this conversation was taking place, so that I would know exactly what is at issue. While it has been a while, I still do remember a bit about policies concerning bots around that time (considering that that was when I started using mine...). – ABCD✉ 05:19, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

- Personally, I do not remember any reason why automated removal of categories was ever an issue, especially if the reason was that the category does not actually exist. I also cannot find any discussion of the "minor rephrase", which makes it look like it was a unilateral policy change that was not contested, because, at that time, there were many edits being made to the page which were not actually policy changes, as the list of running bots was, at that time, maintained on that page. At this point, it looks like the only reason that wording is still used is due to inertia. – ABCD✉ 05:46, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, the lack of institutional memory is a problem with Wikipedia and I'm glad at least you were around from that era and policy page. MBisanz talk 05:50, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Did you try to alter the filter? If you did, you probably were just unlucky. I was not aware you tried to change anything. If you do change something please let me know what it is so I can see its effect on the log. - Mgm|(talk) 13:41, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- Are you sure (!("http://en.wikipedia.org" in removed_lines) | "http://en.wikipedia.org" in added_lines) works like it is supposed to. The string should be in the removed lines, not be in the added lines and if that occurs the filter should be stopped. RIght now it stops if the string occurs in either the removed or added lines which is not the intended effect. - Mgm|(talk) 13:53, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- By DeMorgan's laws, that rewrite changed only how it looks, not how it behaves - if the intended effect was other than "if URL added, flag; else if URL not removed, flag; else don't flag", then the original was just as broken --ABCD
- It did change how it behaves because (!added_lines & removed_lines) is not the same as (added_lines & !removed_lines). The intended use was to ignore the change if the removed ref contained a external link to Wikipedia - Mgm|(talk) 18:35, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
OTRS verification question
[edit]First time I've needed to do this - and haven't a clue on where to do this! The question is on File:Nilkanth Varni.JPG ; the uploader is claiming it's under a "blanket" OTRS, ticket number otrs:2008101410045759. Can you clue me in on how to verify this, and thus restore the image? Thanks much! Skier Dude (talk) 03:33, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- I just checked the ticket, and while it does claim blanket permission, that permission does not include this image, simply because, so far as I can see, that image did not come from the site giving permission. For future reference, that site is http://swaminarayan.org.in/. – ABCD✉ 07:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

- Thank you for the confirmation, ABCD. I wld like to raise another point here. User categories, irssi, mIRC
[edit]I just spent a day cleaning this mess up, including having an admin help with some of it. I'd appreciate it if you would check edit histories before making automated edits/changes from something in an old backlog that had already been dealt with. Thanks. Tothwolf (talk) 06:57, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- For that fact, someone could have pinged my talk page and asked "Hey, I noticed a lot of work has been done here...What's the current status?" That wasn't done, unfortunately. Tothwolf (talk) 07:00, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- I apologize, I didn't check the histories first. I would, however, strongly suggest that you bring this up on WP:DRV, as there appears to be a valid XfD for the cat, and the cat was supposed to have been deleted as a result of that. If you dispute this, then (unless I'm mistaken), WP:DRV should be the proper venue for the dispute. I have reverted my own actions in this matter pending further discussion. – ABCD✉ 07:05, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Well, I got caught off-guard too, the speedy delete warning wasn't expected at all. MBisanz just undeleted the XChat category yesterday. No worries, we'll get it all sorted out (now I need to go for a walk...) Tothwolf (talk) 07:10, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Before I forget...I try not to edit heavily transcluded templates like the mIRC userbox multiple times in a short amount of time because all the pages that transclude it have to be rebuilt which can sometimes add to the server load. Oh well, too late now :) Tothwolf (talk) 07:17, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- The good news is, that change is just a drop in the bucket nowadays, and now there's a job queue that allows those changes to happen asynchronously. (And if two updates happen in rapid succession, the cache is only invalidated once if the queue hasn't gotten that far.) In other words, don't worry too much about it. I remember the "good ol' days", when a change like that would mean waiting a while for the page to submit, while the server updated everything - now that doesn't happen nearly as often. – ABCD✉ 07:25, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Ah! That is good news. I knew there was a job queue but didn't realize it didn't stack changes. I hadn't been active on Wikipedia much for 2-3 years until lately so this is a new (and very much welcome) improvement. Btw, there was also some discussion on Killiondude's and Black Falcon's talk pages and it got a little scattered. (Now, I'm really going for my walk this time LOL.) - The bad news is this category mess is much more widespread. Just about everything in Category:Wikipedians by software has been gutted. Even the {{User browser:Lynx}} template wasn't spared [2] I believe it may be time to rewrite the ambiguous sentence that is causing this to happen. Tothwolf (talk) 11:03, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi there. If you have particular views/plans on renaming pages on chemicals, you might check in wiht the editing community to discuss your ideas. Lots of chem names have been arrived at via some deliberation. We are aware the hyphens, brackets, apostrophes and other typographic things cause some problems to some computers and some people. My sense - and that is all it is, a sense - is that the chem editing community has little interest in nomenclature-purity. So, please check check in at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chemistry and discuss your ideas. Cheers, --Smokefoot (talk) 03:22, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- I didn't realize that this was a controversial area, and did not mean for any edits to imply support for any particular option (I simply saw the "wrongtitle" bit at the top, and moved the page to something closer). – ABCD✉ 20:57, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- Well you didnt do anything wrong and probably did good, so thanks. I was just alerting you in the event that you had large scale editing plans. The topic is slightly sensitive one (with me at least) because Wiki-chem periodically experiences new editors determined to "clean up" the naming according to their perception of nomenclature rules. Thanks for the note. Best wishes,--Smokefoot (talk) 21:53, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I was wondering if you could please confirm the OTRS ticket for File:Hannah Montana cast 2.JPG. The uploader previously uploaded this image as File:Hannah Montana cast 2.png claiming it was his work, which it obviously isn't. He now claims it came from hannahmontananow.com but the image is copyrighted to Disney so the origin of the permission used for the OTRS ticket (if there actually is one) is questionable. Survey on gender
[edit]Hi! I'm Liria Veronesi (User:Akoha77) and, together with Paolo Massa (User:Phauly), I'm starting an empirical research on "Gender and votes in requests for adminship". For this reason, we need to know the gender of Wikipedians who were candidated to become admins.
We tried looking for the templates User:UBX/male and User:UBX/female but only 4 admins use it. We also used the API for getting the gender field in the profile but, out of 1744 admins, only around 400 have filled this field. But we would benefit from a larger coverage, i.e. possibly knowing the gender of 100% of candidates.
So, after asking for advice to 3 admins and receiving 2 positive replies (1 and 2), we decided to try to ask directly to Wikipedians.
Thus, would you be so kind to write your gender [Male / Female / Other], together with a text comment if you want, on my talk page at User_talk:Akoha77? If you prefer to send me this information privately, you can send me an email, the information will be kept confidential and never shared.
Thanks! Akoha77 (talk) 12:48, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:ABCD's top bar.png
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:ABCD's top bar.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:07, 20 February 2011 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Acather96 (talk) 15:07, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool
[edit]Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.
For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!
[edit]Hello there,
I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Fields Medal page
[edit]Hello there,I'm that user who's been the victim of editing the Fields Medal page(i.e.I got blocked with charge of Vandalism.).I've got three question:1)When the current protected status of that page ends,Does the page current contents remain in place or they are replaced with the old version? 2)I've prepared a new and somehow comprehensive table about Fields medalists.I posted this table on the discussion section of the Fields Medal page, and I request for comments about this(If You come there and see my that table I will be really glad, and don't forget to put your comment about it down there!;-)),but so far, just one person did so.Is it normal? 3)Should I submit a request for edit to replace the new table with current one?Or should I wait for reaching a consensus?Thank You.
