Re: Fair City Characters

cross-posted from WP:EAR, in response to your query there.

Culture drone - you seem to be hitting on some of the fairly persistant differences of opinion here on wikipedia. The answer to that question would very much depend on who you ask. I would (a) make note of the issue on the talk page of the relevent wikiproject(s), (b) use your judgement as to which characters should be merged, and then (c) place {{mergeto}} templates on the articles as needed to generate any discussion. I would then merge as appropriate, and only as it has not been objected to. Hope that helps. Pastordavid (talk) 15:40, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Birdmen

Hello. Thanks for letting me know: I forgot to add the template which puts the little lock in the top right corner. The reason why you don't get any warnings is that the page is only semi-protected: new accounts and anonymous editors cannot edit the article but you can since your account is old enough. Pascal.Tesson (talk) 21:35, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Well spotted it had been a format error since March. The template takes input from all the related templates and one of them had been vandalised giving three horizontal screens. It definitely wasn't your browser. Thanks -- EhsanQ (talk) 09:39, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Indian surname categories

Category:Indian family names and Category:Indian surnames are (for some reason) sub-categories of each other... CultureDrone (talk) 11:41, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Politics, religion, caste, region. There really should be a simpler way. South Asia is pobably more diversified than anywhere else on earth. There are 1.2billion people sharing a handful of nations, with modern India at its centre. Thousands of languages, with English being one of the most cross-spoken between all of them.
Surnames, family names, caste names all play a part in a very very rich history. Simplicity can only offend in this circumstance. Let Wikipedia get on and add as many categories (and a few more) to articles about an important part of the world. If they intersect why not? -- EhsanQ (talk) 12:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I certainly didn't mean that your were trying to offend - the names listed under Category:Indian_surnames are Aboriginal names which the people who hold them believe that later people invaded India and created a Sanskrit/Indo European language India. Why Agarwal is there is a puzzle? That is surely a Rajput and Jat from Punjab name.
Category:Indian family names is for "late comers" and will remain the majority category.
I would certainly oppose an cfd in terms on what we know at the moment about linguistics and tribal DNA. Dunno what you want to do, but I would suggest contacting all the main contributors before you did invoke a deletion. -- EhsanQ (talk) 12:42, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

thanks on both counts! always nice to learn new things :). and always nice to meet a member of the uncat task force, from the number of cat/recat edits i do i'd assumed i was the only one!Ironholds (talk) 12:17, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I know, its incredibly annoying! the worst bit is when i spend three days clearing bio's out of LAST months category, which shouldnt even be being added to, only to come back the next day and find 200 late entries i have to go through. Ironholds (talk) 12:28, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Your D-Boy edits

Having reviewed them, they seem fair and I think make the article better. I admittedly AM a fan of D-Boy..I tried to keep it NPOV but I see how the phrase "quantum leap" is non-encyclopedic unless I make it by use of a critic's quote or some such. I think the NYPD redirect came about because there happens to be a cop of the same name of some notoriety. They probably didn't really read the article when they did the redirect. Nice catch..thanks. Disambiguation pages

Just wanted to let you know - for disambiguation pages, when there is no primary topic, the disambiguation page should be located just at the title, not at "Title (disambiguation)". Not really something many people know, but I figured I'd let you know in case you ran across that in the future. For more information, you can take a look at Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Page_naming_conventions. -- Natalya 15:58, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

You're more than welcome. Normally I advice editors I've added the right, but in your case I was looking through your contribution history. Are you thinking of going this way ? Pedro :  Chat  09:16, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I did note some stuff on your talk page, and you will need to get some stuff down pat - particularly important stuff includes the WP:CSD criteria (evidenced by good speedy tagging) and informed comments at WP:AFD. I think most of your stuff so far is great, and I'm sure you'd do well with the admin buttons. Not yet, but in the future. Hit me up at any point if you want some help or guidance. Regarding 46 (album)

Dear CultureDrone, that's quite correct. However, I warned the creator of the page about my proposal, so I believe he was given the opportunity to fill the article with more information. If I just redirect the article, every time the creator clicks 46 (album), he'll be taken to Kino (band), and he may not notice that his article has been redirected, because most of the unexperienced editors of Wikipedia don't know anything about redirects. Anyway, redirecting is not a bad idea, at all. If you believe it's better, you can go ahead and do it. But do warn the creator, or he may get a little confused. Thank you, Victor Lopes (talk) 21:37, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Resection (orientation), and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Resection. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 08:58, 8 June 2008 (UTC) Yes, the bot was confused, as Resection is currently a disambiguation page for Resection (orientation). --Blaisorblade (talk) 23:19, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Chris Huffman

my position within the deletion process was "blank+redirect" but i put it through the deletion process initially because 1) editor consensus prevents angry authord railing at me for deleting his/her hard work and 2) because previously with pages like this (band member pages containing no content not covered on the initial band article) i've had different users/admins with different views; if i redirect the article or csd it, for example, i've had administrators denying the csd or reverting my edits due to their opinion on whether it should/shouldnt be deleted, which is perfectly fine but could be better expressed in an afd discussion than an edit summary. Ironholds 09:44, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, and thanks for the speedy reply! may i ask why the question? Ironholds 09:50, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Ahh ok, fair enough :). I've been around for just under 3 names (previously with a different username) and in some ways i'm still learning the ropes myself (say if i start contributing to a part of wikipedia i dont tend to use), but feel free to ask me any questions/advice/"what would ironholds do?". Ironholds 09:54, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
I have one final one left (coming up in a week or so) and then i'll be editing wikipedia like a motherbot. And lucky you! i'll leave it behind in 2-3 years :S. Knowing fate and all i'll most likely become a teacher and have to deal with it until i'm 60 :P. Ironholds 10:01, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Btw, i've self-nominated meself for adminship here And i'd appreciate any comments/feedback you could give. thanks in advance! Ironholds 17:06, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. I'd encountered that policy previously, and havent been doing so. Ironholds 18:11, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Your Support !vote here was quite well written. I ended up adding to my initial Neutral with what amounts to a response, and thought I'd leave a note citing the fact that I was sort of responding to you. In essence, I can see the concern from the Opposes, though I don't share it. Also, I don't think any Trekkers were offended; most of them ended up at the Star Trek wiki anyway. Best! Thanks for the support vote, dude :). All-in-all i've found you a pleasant, kind and approchable editor, so please accept my wholehearted thanks for being one of the nicest users i've found in the last 2 years :). Ironholds 21:28, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Haha, thanks. I've been working on quite a few of those points (mainly a load of fauna redlinks last night, and also my pet project, a big article on a Native American tribe that isn't yet covered) but it's always nice to have them written down for you, and I hadn't considered the admin coaching (I applied a while back, and nobody has yet got back to me, so i'd kind of written it off). userpage pinching

Feel free to nick whatever you want :). I had a couple of people think it was a wonderful idea to nick stuff without asking, specifically the "click here to leave a message" banner. Funnest thing on wikipedia yet; one of them goes:

"How do you know it was from your talk page?! I could have created it! it could just look similar, there are lots of similar things! I want an apology!"

"It still links to my talk page"

"..oh"

So yes, feel free to nab what you want :). If you get a general idea together and need someone to piece it into code, feel free to poke me and i'll see what I can do; my last exam is tomorrow and then i'm home free for the summer. Ironholds 13:07, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm doing so; tomorrow evening i'm out with friends. We worked out a points system: 0 if i wake up in my own bed, 1 point for a gutter, 2 for someone elses bed, and 3 if it's someone i dont know :P. It's my birthday next week, so it all worked out swimmingly. Ironholds 15:24, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
3 points, technically the mother counts as "somebody i dont know". I really should spend less time thinking about this, haha :P. I need to get my userpage overhauled, actually; moving stuff around and creating a "significant contributions page". Aggh, later. Ironholds 16:36, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Adrenaline Rush Twilight

Hello! I noticed you have prodded the page Adrenaline Rush Twilight. I think you are absolutely right, so much that I have endorsed the proposal. However, you didn't warn the creator of the page about it. I believe that no matter how awful a page may be, every editor has the right to be warned about the deletion of pages created by him. You don't need to worry, because I already warned the creator about it. Just thought you'd like to know about it. Cheers, Victor Lopes (talk) 01:37, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

PS: I've just noticed this is the second time I come here on your talk page to talk about the same issue! Not that I'm criticizing you, of course, this was just a trivial comment. Cheers, Victor Lopes (talk) 01:37, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I hate when people do that...I mean, when they point only the very few mistakes I make...I hope you don't take it personally =P Anyway, why don't you try using Twinkle? Cheers, Victor Lopes (talk) 00:44, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
I noticed the userbox, I even have the same on my userpage! I'm also glad that you are working on the uncategorized task force too. As for Twinkle, I guarantee you it saves lots of work, and you won't have problems with forgetting to warn ditors anymore, because it does it all for you! =D Well, I never saw anything go wrong, so I'll keep on trusting it =P Victor Lopes (talk) 21:50, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

List of problems not solved by MacGyver: propose speedy deletion

Hi, I've seen proposed for Speedy deletion page List of problems not solved by MacGyver, then saw your proposal when editing User talk:Farannan, and saw it was removed by an anonymous user with edit summary saying "Fixed spelling":

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_problems_not_solved_by_MacGyver&diff=next&oldid=224325301

I've kept my proposal (per Wikipedia:CSD#G1 it should be correct), and for that edit, that IP may need to be blocked. I don't know the exact policies though and lack time for reading them, so I hope you can help me or do it yourself. Please give any answer at my talk page. --Blaisorblade (talk) 22:59, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Welcome messages etc.

Yes, you have a very good point. There are some standard welcome templates including one enormous one that more or less fills the screen with links - I think that's overkill and would put a newbie off. You could try {{welcome}} - that's not bad. I ended up making a custom-built one which I keep on a text file and copy and paste: the standard version goes:

Welcome

Welcome to Wikipedia. To find out how to make useful contributions, take a look at the welcome page. To stay in Wikipedia, an article has to be about something notable, that is, of general interest. Click on Notability for an explanation of what that means. Also, it must give independently verifiable sources. Articles that don't meet these requirements are likely to be deleted. Follow the links below to learn more:

<signature>

I have variations on that which add, after "Click on Notability for an explanation of what that means",

as appropriate; and I sometimes put in bold the most relevant bits, e.g. the line about advertising when the article is obvious spam, or add a line such as "Wikipedia is not for things made up one day" if that's the problem.

You are very welcome to copy and adapt any of that you like.

Regards, JohnCD (talk) 10:24, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

I restored it; but please beef it up quickly; text information is always more meaningful than infoboxes to those not cognoscenti of a field. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:41, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I'm indifferent-bordering-on-hostile towards athletics and athletic competitions, so I'm an incredibly weak judge of these things. Krcevac

The page on Krćevac that I've started is basically complete and it can be de-tagged as under construction. If for some reason you are inclined to delete it, please at least notify me of your intentions so I can correct any flaws you may perceive in the article. Thank you. XJeanLuc (talk) 14:55, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

I accidentally created two pages. One is Krcevac and the other is Krćevac. I would like to maintain the "Krćevac" article title, but I would also like Wikipedia transfers all "Krcevac" search queries to the "Krćevac" page. Do you think you could delete Krcevac, but leave Krćevac as is? Thanks.
Thank you for your help CultureDrone. I've taken out the Serbian sentence that you mentioned and I've described the sources that I've listed in the talk page for the article. I'll try changing the layout so that it appears a bit neater. Again, thanks. XJeanLuc (talk) 15:18, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

RE:hello

I got bored on break, I guess! Thanks for the heads-up :). How goes things? Ironholds 21:41, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Na, i'm all good :). Exam party/birthday party both went well (the kind of suicide monday/tuesday/wednesday kind of well) and i'm travelling to amsterdam with my girlfriend for a few days, so I guess I get money, drugs and loose women osmosis :P. It's not that I spend all my time here, just the time I should be spending sleeping :P. I'm not down per se, just tired of constant backlogs on WP in admin-specific areas; having to wait an hour and a half for csd'd personal attack pages to be deleted and the offending editors blocked gets my goat, especially since I sometimes have to stay around to make sure the user doesn't remove the CSD tag/whatever. Still, just extra reasons to work towards adminship :). Ironholds 21:47, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Not a psychology student any more, but I have been, so it's probably a bad idea. I can quote all kind of things at you :P. I've been to Amsterdam a few times (mainly going for the comedy, I get a load of free ticks and stuff, long story) but this is the first visit where I actually get to do what I want, so it should be fun. The admin thing is a common problem; too many users, not enough admins. 1500 janitors is a nice lovely number, except when there are 7 million whining, screamy brats dropping rubbish and spraying graffiti :). help!

CD, i'm scared! there are... IP's on wikipedia, and they're actually *nervously* contributing helpfully! I just opened a dozen IP recent changes and none of them were vandaltastic! Wikipedia is broken, everyone knows its secret purpose is to have people post bullshit here instead of acting aggressive and calling people FAGGOTZ in real life, thereby preventing crime! IP's aren't meant to HELP! :PIronholds 22:11, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

And now YOU'RE the psychologist! I have to despair at the amount of effort that goes into these vandaltastic articles; if they spent that much time doing something useful (in some cases, a .22 to the face, for example) we might actually achieve something here. Ironholds 23:02, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Help on editing referances

Can you please help on editing referances of List of palaces in Egypt.--Ashashyou (talk) 13:13, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Lack of sleep is no excuse for not editing :-) There is a 'proper' tag for articles under construction, which I've added to this article. Could I also draw your attention to the manual of style for disambig pages - specifically MOS:DAB#Individual entries - "Each bulleted entry should, in almost every case, have exactly one navigable (blue) link. To avoid confusing the reader, do not wikilink any other words in the line" - all the ones on this page have two... unless that's something you're going to sort out :-) CultureDrone (talk) 13:37, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh dear! You're a hard task master aren't you! (But then, I'm asleep, aren't I? So how would I know? ;-)
Thanks for your diligence; I agree with almost all of what you say - I was just trying to "escape" and get some sleep!!!
However, please note that there is, in fact, precisely (and only) one blue link per line.
I have most definitely NOT linked any other words in the lines.
Yes, every line does indeed have two links - one red and one blue.
And yes (please don't laugh too hysterically), I have the unrealistic hope that "somebody else" will sort this out before I find the time to do so!
And thanks for putting in the template. I think it's an indication of how much I need some sleep that I couldn't remember the name of the template. (Oh really, come on. It's not that funny.)
May I go to bed now? Please? Best Wishes, and thanks for the lightheartedness, it is appreciated! Cheers, Pdf (talk) 14:43, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Lol!! (More informative reply later) pdf (talk) 23:03, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Hmm..I see you've had a veritable explosion of Windy Points :-) CultureDrone (talk) 09:45, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Was that intended to be the double entendre I interpreted it as? You certainly know a lot about Oz "culture" for a Pom!! (And yes, I'm still smiling.) Pdf (talk) 10:40, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
On a serious note: I have no burning desire to resolve all these redlinks in the next five minutes; my two motivations were to NOT have the Windy Point page associated with one particular place, and to have a page for Windy Point, Adelaide that did the place some justice. (It really is a nice place, the views are very impressive, and many years ago when I was a lad, it was a great place to take your girlfriend en-route to taking her home. But I digress ... ) Coming to the point: Once I've created the Adelaide page, what should I do about all the other redlinks? pdf (talk) 10:40, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Oz, the land of opportunity!

Oh yes, I promised to respond to:
Sleepwalking I've heard of, even talking in your sleep....but sleeptyping is a new one on me! Only one blue link per item... ok, technically there's only one blue link at the moment - but were you planning on removing the second link if the article was created...hmmmm ? C'mon - be honest, or I'll set my swarm of highly trained attack moths on your duvet :-) (though I guess living down under means moths are the least of your troubles what with crocodiles, spiders, snakes etc.... - a chance to be poisoned by something different every day ;-)) CultureDrone (talk) 16:41, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
"but sleeptyping is a new one on me!" - Well, the infamous and undefined "they" say that "You learn something new every day, and sometimes, some of it is actually useful ... ". (Personally, I'm yet to be convinced, but it has the air of plausibility about it ... )
"but were you planning on removing the second link if the article was created...hmmmm ? C'mon - be honest" - I'm devestated by your lack of assumption of good faith! (I may never recover!!) Of course that was my plan! (Was that sufficiently convincing?)
"though I guess living down under means moths are the least of your troubles" - "Moths in my duvet" is the least of my concerns; we don't need, and hence don't use, duvet's in this delightful climate. However, I gather you've never heard of our "killer moths"? "crocodiles, spiders, snakes etc" are of minor concern.
"a chance to be poisoned by something different every day" - You seem to be implying that there are places where this is not the case? However, I must admit that I'm more concerned about being run over by a bus, and I'm actually worried by the prospect of my teenage daughter being in a motor vehicle with a testosterone charged alcohol fueled under-25-year-old male. "Sorry - that's probably the stereotypical attitude towards Australia you expect from a 'pom'" - Are you implying that there are Poms who don't have that attitude?
"I wasn't trying to be offensive - that's something I can normally do without trying" - Well that's interesting. I thought that attribute was restricted to me. pdf (talk) 10:40, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Photos

If you have any pictures of the place in Adelaide that don't include your girlfriend(s)

No, sorry. As we all know, "Gentlemen take Polaroids", and I've never been game enough to scan them. (Well, it sounded good when I wrote it, but the fact is they're all so old that they've turned yellow anyway.) (Who am I kidding. I destroyed them all well before I got married. I'm pretty stupid, but not THAT stupid.) (Come to think of it, you may never have lived in the age before digital cameras, and the above may not mean anything to you.) pdf (talk) 11:46, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

If you have any pictures of the place in Adelaide that don't include your girlfriend(s), then you could upload one so we could all marvel at the view.

Yeah. Stacks of them. Good idea. Will do. "Soon". (Maybe even tonight.) Pdf (talk) 11:46, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Killer Moths

Sorry, I forgot about this one:

"Killer moths" are a new one on me - honestly, killer moths ?! Do they eat through your underwear, causing terminal embarrassment ?

Yup. You got it. And then, if that wasn't successful, they move on to juicier targets ... pdf (talk) 11:58, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

BTW: Did they tell you about Drop Bears? Pdf (talk) 11:58, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, you fell for Killer Moths ... pdf (talk) 12:04, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
And Drop Bears aren't plausible? Pdf (talk) 12:08, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Sorry my friend. This has been a lot of fun, but I have to say goodnight. Cheers, pdf (talk) 12:11, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

(You're probably too young to recognise quotes from black & white American cowboy TV shows; you probably didn't get them in the UK anyway ... )

So, where were we? Oh yes:

Double entendre ? Well...it seemed amusing to me - but that could be down to my weird sense of humour.... :-)
I blame my parents...then again, who doesn't ?... Freud, eat your heart out !
Well, blaming my parents works for me ...
"Once I've created the Adelaide page, what should I do about all the other redlinks?" hmmm...how about creating articles for them ? ;-p A radical thought I know, but hey, I believe in surprising people at least once a day (no, not like that !) :-) Actually, it's not as bad a thought as you may think - WP is fairly relaxed on geographical articles - creating a stub article with an infobox and coordinates would probably be enough for the moment - if the information is to hand, it could be a copy and paste job for most of them. I'll split it 50:50 with you if you're feeling under pressure from the 'old country' :-)
I feel pressure from lots of places - primarily my wife, then my daughters, then the bank, and sometimes from the sociopaths at work, but mainly from myself. (I blame my parents ... Again I digress ... )
Yes please, I'd appreciate your help. I'm even prepared to split it me=60:you=40 if you do the first one so that I've got a "template" to copy.
If you have any pictures of the place in Adelaide that don't include your girlfriend(s), then you could upload one so we could all marvel at the view....but hey, no rush... see - laid back attitude as well !
What happened to your stiff upper lip?
I'm devestated by your lack of assumption of good faith! (I may never recover!!) Of course that was my plan! (Was that sufficiently convincing?). You're so honest and trustworthy, how could I be less than totally convinced ?
Dunno. I really don't understand it, but it would seem that there are some who aren't convinced by my sincerity. (Well, I guess it takes all types to make a world ... )
Changing subject, you may have noticed I created Windy Point, Te Kuha as a redirect to Te Kuha.
Is that "kosher", or is some MoS nazi likely to complain?
If it is kosher, then I could turn ALL the redlinks into blue links in 5 minutes, and then the redirect pages could be turned into "real" pages at my/our leisure. Your thoughts?
Cheers, Pdf (talk) 05:32, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I've always been more of a science fiction sort of guy, so I wasn't a great one for Laramie / The Virginian / Bonanza / Little House on the Prarie (delete as appropriate) (ok, the last one wasn't really a cowboy show, but it's the right sort of era...). That having been said, black and white anything is a little before my time....just !

Re the redlinks / place stubs - I see no reason why they couldn't be created as redirects and sorted out afterwards - assuming that there really is a place called, for example, Windy Point in Conejos County that exists on a map, rather than as an amusing name coined by a group of high-school students one evening after one too many beers.

My stiff upper lip is out for starching :-) CultureDrone (talk) 09:39, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

(y'know, we could do this all here if you preferred ... )
Re B&W TV: No, I didn't like that selection you mentioned much. The place I remember that quote from was "The Lone Ranger", though I'm disappointed to find the article doesn't mention the phrase even once. At that time "cowboys and injuns" was our favourite game, encouraged also by The Cisco Kid#Television (Duncan Renaldo and Leo Carillo), Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers (but he sang and had a girlfriend - who apparently was his 3rd wife!! - so we weren't too sure about him.)
But then came Chuck Connors as the The Rifleman, with a seriously cool weapon: 1, 2. And not long after, Combat!
Little wonder that Harold Holt was able to go "All the way with LBJ" and get Australia involved in the Vietnam War!!
You'd have to wonder which (if any) Australian & British TV shows were playing for 6-12 year-old-boys at the time, wouldn't you?
(Well, I guess there was cubs, then scouts, too, and they didn't involve any TV, just songs like ging-gang-gooly and games like british bulldog and hoppo-bumpo - no WP reference for hoppo-bumpo, but given your background, you probably know it anyway ... And yes, my (older) brother-in-law took great delight in calling me a "queen" after I'd been to government house to get my certificate supposedly signed by E-II-R.)
Anyway, it's bin night, so I'd better wrap this up and go put the bins out.
"I see no reason why they couldn't be created as redirects and sorted out afterwards" - Good.
However, I would find it helpful if you created just one "real" one so that I had a template. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 11:31, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

All very Windy, and that reminds me, what was the Point?

OK, it's Monday night, it's late, and that's not particularly amusing. (Even with the typos corrected.) But the bins are out, the redirects are in place, and the sea of red has been replaced by a sea of blue. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 12:50, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Designing Economic Mechanisms

Hello CultureDrone. You prodded the article Designing Economic Mechanisms and you claim that there's no assertation of notability and it's completely unreferenced. Please see the section "references", you will find a reference. This book is about mechanism design. Please read that article. The authors of the book, Leonid Hurwicz and Stanley Reiter, helped found the field of mechanism design. In fact, Hurwicz shared the 2007 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Eric Maskin and Roger Myerson for their work on mechanism design. Hurwicz recently died. I was doing some research on him, and I created this article. This book is considered an important work of Hurwicz. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 16:36, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the reply. CultureDrone, I will reply in about 12 to 14 hours. Right now, I am busy in real life. I have some work. I am about to close my computer. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 17:09, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
CultureDrone, you said: there's no assertation of notability and it's completely unreferenced. I am not trying to prove notability by using that reference. The reference only shows that the book exists. I think it is difficult to prove notability to people who don't have background in economics. Leonid Hurwicz was not just a notable economist; he was one of the most influential economists of the 20th century. His research marks the birth of mechanism design theory. He showed how game theory can help determine the best, most efficient method for allocating resources. His work is very important in economics. His book Designing Economic Mechanisms is about mechanism design theory. This book was published in 2006 and Hurwicz received the Nobel Prize in 2007. In future, more academics will use this book in their work. You may object and remained me about WP:CRYSTAL, but that how it is. After someone wins the Nobel Prize, more academics are going to discuss his work. This book was written by one of the most influential economists of the 20th century and it is about his most important work, mechanism design theory. At this time, the article just passes notability. The book is also mentioned in the article Leonid Hurwicz. I also think that this book will be wikilinked in article related to economics. Therefore, I don't think it would be correct to delete the article. However, I agree with you that the third party references are required. I think the tag should remain. I have also removed the section "Contents" from the article. I think it is unnecessary. I just created the article yesterday. It will take sometime to develop the article. Thank you for your suggestion which were helpful. I would like to know what you think. Regards, Masterpiece2000 (talk) 03:38, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

aeq.

Hi, CultureDrone. Thanks for the notice regarding the tagging of aeq. About that, please read the message I left here. --Waldir talk 17:10, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

I tend to use as a rule of thumb my own needs (as a non-native English speaker) when adding internal links to other articles. We obviously should avoid Allwiki, but in some cases (such as this one, I believe) there should be links to help people find information more easily. Otherwise (and taking your reasoning to the other extreme) all articles made up of a single {{wi}} should be deleted, which also is not desirable. --Waldir talk 18:30, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Precisely, they are just that, extremes, and none of them should be strictly followed (I believe we can agree on this at least!). There has to be some compromise in the middle. Your argument of "only have a link to wiki B (wiktionary in this case) from wiki A (wikipedia in this case) if and only if there was a suitable article in Wiki A" would render {{wi}} completely useless (and therefore all articles incorporating it would have to be deleted. This wouldn't be loss of information, but it'd be loss of ease of finding that information. The other extreme is precisely what's described (and discouraged) in the link I provided above about "allwiki". The part above that makes an argument on the recommendation to "build the web". That would be the compromise I'm talking about. I assume you have read it, and if that didn't convince you, I don't think I can. As you said, we can agree to disagree. Therefore, you can keep your view, evidently, but I suggest that next time you find such a case (just look for {{wi}}'s incoming links) you propose regular deletion instead of speedy. --Waldir talk 21:40, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

You-tube videos don't! But WP:CSD#A7 is very tight, and the article asserts notability, however thinly. I'd strongly recommend WP:AFD to be honest, as although it's not a speedy candidate it does seem to fail WP:N at the first hurdle! M♠ssing Ace 19:59, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your editing. When I created the article, I was not sure what the conventional translation was. Please check the article Imperial examination, and see Jinshi, or presented scholar. Put it simply, there were three levels of examinations in ancient China, i.e., county, provincial and national. The title Jinshi would be awarded if someone passed the highest level exam, which usually took place in the capital city. The formation of the exam was like today's college entrance examination. It took a few days and required candidates to write an article under a given title in an isolated space. But today, if you pass the college entrance exam, you enroll into the college for further study. But if you passed the Imperial exam, you would become a civil officer immediately and serve the country. So, in principal, it's more like a government official selection exam. Hope it helps. You don't need to assert that the subject passes WP:BIO (or another applicable notability guideline) in order to avoid A7 speedy deletion, you just have to include an assertion of significance. Citing references is a good sign that the article needs to be reviewed by other editors. Hut 8.5 11:45, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes - an assertion of significance without references is still an assertion of significance. If it wasn't, we'd have to delete all unreferenced articles (including those that could easily be referenced). Hut 8.5 11:53, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I agree with your analysis, but there's no haste in deleting it. If I had seen the "speedy delete" tag, I'd just have left it there, because it's not far off the mark, but I think a normal "notability" tag does the job as well, and we can prod or AFD it in a day or two. --Slashme (talk) 09:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
