Talk:Asian Five Nations

I have noticed you have previously a regular editor with the Asian Five Nations, and I have put in place a merge and move proposal that you might be to contribute to. Talk:Asian Five Nations Rugby.change (talk) 19:21, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Disruptive editor

Hi Hamish. I have found it necessary to repeat my warning to User:109.153.100.122 for replacing duplicate wikilinks, on the 49 Div article. I also noted that he has reverted some of your corrective edits on that and several other articles, despite your Not broken advice. Having looked at some of the other prolific unsourced edits he/she is doing to other articles, there are so many in such short periods of time, I am starting to wonder if they are copyvio's from history books ! Richard Harvey (talk) 10:54, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, Richard. Sadly, this is one of a number of IPs that geolocate to the City of London that I have encountered, for example 109.156.125.250 [1]. I have tried talking to him/her, never got a response. Hamish59 (talk) 21:37, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Hi Hamish. The IPs are all in the Net Range block of '109.152.0.0 - 109.158.255.255' If the editor persists in disruptive editing and fails to respond to requests to curb placing unreferenced edits and angaging in edit warring, then an Admin can place a temporary WP:RANGEBLOCK, which may make him comply with concensus. If not that block can be extended as fequired. I am aware of several editors who have received range blocks of several months. One in particular has just had a 12 month range block extended for a further 12 months. Richard Harvey (talk) 22:06, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Might not be that easy: 81.157.66.129 81.157.66.129 is another example with the same MO (British Army units / formations, City of London location). Hamish59 (talk) 22:39, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Army 2020

I removed that section because there is a picture flow chart in the section above already giving the full Army 2020 structure, Regular and Reserve. That chart doesnt even complete the full regular structure and has missing information.Phd8511 (talk) 05:13, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

I understand. However, the diagram is quite fixed, not easy for anyone to update / correct, whereas the section you removed can be improved or updated by anyone who has access to up-to-date information. Hamish59 (talk) 19:14, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Moves of Mounted Brigades

G'day, the "technical" moves you requested do not conform with WP:MILMOS#UNITNAMES, because they should either be at their last name, or remain disambiguated because there are other XXth Mounted Brigades. Please have a read. Thanks, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 10:51, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

G'day, Peacemaker67. I note WP:MILMOS#UNITNAMES; I have been tripped up by In cases where a unit's name can reasonably be expected to be used by multiple armed forces in that I had no knowledge of 3rd Mounted Brigade (Canada) - Canadian armed forces and the Boer War not being areas of particular interest to me - so did not think my proposed moves was in any way controversial. Ho, hum. We live and learn.
Moving on, I note that you have been moving some of the Mounted Brigade articles to Cyclist Brigades, e.g. 20th Mounted Brigade to 9th Cyclist Brigade. I fully understand this per WP:MILMOS#UNITNAMES but the problem I see is that two separate formations were designated as 9th Cyclist Brigade
2/1st Lowland Mounted Brigade -> 20th Mounted Brigade -> 13th Cyclist Brigade -> 9th Cyclist Brigade
2/1st Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Mounted Brigade -> 9th Mounted Brigade -> 9th Cyclist Brigade -> 5th Cyclist Brigade
[This problem applies to all the Cyclist Brigades as there was considerable reorganization of the 2nd Line Yeomanry Regiments in November 1916. 1st to 8th Cyclist Brigades were broken up and their regiments amalgamated in pairs in new 1st to 4th Cyclist Brigades; the 9th to 14th Cyclist Brigades were then renumbered as 5th to 10th Cyclist Brigades. To add to the confusion, new 11th, 12th and 13th Cyclist Brigades were formed in September 1917.]
Question is, how do we handle this situation? Both formations existed simultaneously (though obviously bearing the 9th Cyclist Brigade title at different times) so I think we need two separate articles. I was going to write a List of British Army Cyclist Brigades in World War I type article to outline this series of renumberings and reorganization, with redirects from, for example, 5th Cyclist Brigade.
I have a related problem with 1st Mounted Division being the name applied to three different formations. The second incarnation is outlined in the 3rd Mounted Division article, but I would like to create a redirect for this. Writing something like the new 1st Mounted Division (3rd Mounted Division renumbered) is a little clumsy. A redirect 3rd Mounted Division#1st Mounted Division would be better but what would be a good title for the redirect page? new 1st Mounted Division, 1st Mounted Division (second formation), or something else? Any advise would be most gratefully received. Hamish59 (talk) 13:38, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
The best solution I can think of is to disambiguate by year span. eg 9th Cyclist Brigade (1916–1918), 5th Cyclist Brigade (1916–1918). Any issues likely to arise with that? Regards, Peacemaker67 (crack... thump) 00:05, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
One thing that springs to mind is that some of the incarnations only had a short span. For example, the original 5th Cyclist Brigade (of 2nd Cyclist Division) existed from July to November 1916. Hamish59 (talk) 10:02, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
I wonder if 5th Cyclist Brigade (July–November 1916) would work? Whatever we call them, we will need a dab page. Hamish59 (talk) 10:34, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of 52nd Indian Infantry Brigade, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: 51st Indian Infantry Brigade. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 15:59, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Created 52nd Indian Infantry Brigade by starting with a copy of 51st Indian Infantry Brigade, so spot on. Hamish59 (talk) 16:04, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Caporetto

Hi. Why did you revert my edit? Is overwhelming used to describe any other battles?STFX1046190 (talk) 09:32, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Do you mean Caporetto or Battle of Caporetto? If the latter, then I do not know what you mean - you have never edited it. Hamish59 (talk) 17:32, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

122nd Rajputana Infantry (God's Own)

There's an existing article for 122nd Rajputana Infantry I think there might be some mileage in using some of the bare elements (ie outline material rather than the wall of verbiage) of 122nd Rajputana Infantry (God's Own) but I agree that the article as titled needs removing. Your thoughts? GraemeLeggett (talk) 18:12, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Graeme, that sounds like a good plan, 122nd Rajputana Infantry could benefit for some expansion, but without the wall of text. Are you in a position to do this? Talk page redirects

Why did you create this talk page redirect, because this is not usually done (as it can complicate future page moves). -- PBS (talk) 20:57, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

@PBS: Err. Links to where... Hamish59 (talk) 21:00, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
Strange the Ping did not work. Must have had the wrong thing in the cut and past buffer second time a charm: This edit. -- PBS (talk) 17:38, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
@PBS: Understand now. I do not think about future page moves: obviously not an issue in this instance, but could be in the wider case. I thought that moving a page would move the talk page too, unless you specifically choose not to. Or have I got this wrong? Hamish59 (talk) 10:45, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

It depends if a page moves twice then the talk page will have a history and it has to be manually deleted, it has to be deleted manually and then the talk page and its archives have to be moved across in a separate move to that of the article. Why did you create the redirect? -- PBS (talk) 12:51, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

No problem, I will just replace it with a rdr. Hamish59 (talk) 14:31, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
Now the page talk page will defiantly have to be removed if the page is moved to that article name. What is the purpose of placing a template on a redirect talk page with no other content on the talk page? -- PBS (talk) 18:41, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
Can you point me at a policy on this? Hamish59 (talk) 11:15, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
I have stated that you can not do it, I have asked why you did it. Given it can cause problems for other editors, what are the advantages of such a redirect or adding such a template? -- PBS (talk) 21:06, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

I have stated that you can not do it – seriously?
You tell me that I have done something wrong, I have tried to fix it, but apparently I have made it worse. I have asked for a policy so I can understand the issue, and try to fix it. I did not know that redirect pages were not supposed to have talk pages – again, a policy would be very useful. Hamish59 (talk) 14:52, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Autopatroller

Hi Hamish, thanks for creating those articles on Indian divisions. I've set your account as WP:Autopatrolled and also given you the wp:reviewer userright in case any pending changes come up on your watchlist. I also noticed you do quite a bit of vandalfighting. If you'd like the WP:Rollback button just read the instructions, and tell me when you would and wouldn't use it. Cheers and happy editing. ϢereSpielChequers 08:23, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

That is really excellent, WereSpielChequers, thank you very much. I think I would to have the Rollback button. I would be most interested in the ability to revert obvious vandalism (usage #1) and to revert my own edit (usage #3, particularly to correct accidental edits). I particularly like the "A link to the reverted user's contribution history is provided" as I often find vandals change several pages in quick succesion. Hamish59 (talk) 08:48, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
Done. Yes Rollback does make it easier to get to the other edits made by the same vandal. ϢereSpielChequers 13:51, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Tobruk

Greetings Hamish, what does an anchor do? Keith-264 (talk) 22:02, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

If you want to link to a particular section in an article, you can link to the section title e.g. Capture of Tobruk gives you Capture of Tobruk. Problem is, if the section name is changed, then the link is broken. Using an anchor will do the same job, but it does not matter if the section title changes. So, Capture of Tobruk gives you Capture of Tobruk. Hamish59 (talk) 22:09, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
Aah thanks, I'll remember that. Regards Keith-264 (talk) 22:37, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Bull's Troop RHA and WP:MILUNIT

Are you aware that MILUNIT stipulates that batteries/companies of regiments/battalions, as opposed to separate (combat) batteries/companies, are generally not deemed notable? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 09:59, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Yes; batteries of RHA (and RA) are seperate units in that sense. The basic organic unit of the Royal Artillery is the battery and the lineage, honours and traditions are carried through the battery. They are assigned to regiments in a similar manner to battalions being assigned to brigades (and indeed RA regiments were called brigades before 1938). Mercer's Troop is more developed so may present a better idea than Bull's Troop which is a work in progress. Hamish59 (talk) 10:22, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
I fully understand that the traditions, history, lineage of the RA/RHA are often carried forward at the battery rather than regimental level. I've met a previous commander of 94 (NZ) Bty. But the fact remains that these batteries are almost always part of regiments not separate (like 148 FO Bty). Now I know that there are a whole list - 50ish plus of battery articles and I'm not entirely sure what to do. Anyway thanks for clarifying. Buckshot06 (talk) 22:25, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for that, Buckshot06, I fully understand where you are coming from.
Looking at I Battery as an example: from formation in 1805 it was an independent unit (though part of an administrative brigade from 1859 until 1889) until 1901 when made part of a tactical brigade, unbrigaded from 1921 to 1938, then part of a regiment (shuffled from 2 RHA to 4 RHA then to 7 RHA from 1961). So, in 210 years it was part of a brigade for just 20 (1901 – 1921) and of a regiment for 77 (1938 to present); a significant part of its history has been as a separate unit. I believe that they fit into a different category than, say, A Company, 1st Battalion, Blankshire Regiment. Hamish59 (talk) 22:54, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

RWC

Hi Hamish

I am new to all this so please forgive me if I am doing this wrong. I recently amended one of your pages Rugby World Cup 1987 as you had one of the try scorers listed incorrectly in the Group Stage match between Japan and the United States.

The try scorer is incorrectly listed as Gary Lambert, and not Blane Warhurst. This is also the case on the ESPN Scrum website which I am assuming you got your information from.

I am a TV Archiver for IMG Productions in Stockley Park, London and I am currently working on the Rugby World Cup 1987 footage for our website www.imgsva.com and have been using your page, and ESPN Scrum as reference guides.

My emendation was not meant to offend, and I can assure you, I was only trying to correct your information so that it is accurate.

Kind regards, John (Gnasher81) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gnasher81 (talkcontribs) 12:28, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Gnasher81, I will add a welcome note to your talk page. This will offer some advice on starting editing on Wikipedia. For example, you need to sign your talk page posts using four tildas: ~~~~
1987 Rugby World Cup is not "one of my pages". Anyone can edit, no one owns a specific page.
The problem I had with your edit is that you made a change without explanation and without providing a citation to a reliable source to justify your change. The official match report states that the US try scorers were Nelson, Purcell and Lambert – which I checked. So, your edit looks a lot like distruptive editing / vandalism, hence I reverted your change. Can you provide a reliable source to back the change you want to make? 2nd Independent Parachute Brigaid

Hi, I am Dennis, Geigamedia - RE: The picture of the 3 Paras in Athens 1944. The one with the Bren gun is my Father JJ(MJ) Coughlin, Private( Fusilier ) 6th Battalion Royal Welch, I have lots of photos of him, and he remembers the photo being taken, it was staged for the photographer. He also used the same Bren gun for sniping from the Prison in Athens. So not the 5th Scots. My Father was also on HMS Abdiel when it sunk in Taranto Harbour.

He had a very interesting war and only died 2 years ago age 90, I have a lot of first hand stories and documents and photos from his time in the 2nd Independent. From his training at Ringway, North Africa, Italy, Operation Dragoon, he and 5 others liberated the French town of Le Motte(the first to be liberated), I still have the wallet he removed from a German prisoner taken at the post office in Le Motte. He was injured at Casino, had a very hairy time fighting very close hand on the Gustav line(Sangro, Italy) and after Greece, he eventual left Italy in the bomb aimers nose cone of a Lancaster, in August 1945(still have the raffle ticket they gave him to indicate were to sit) he ended up late 1946 clearing unexploded ordinance at Gosport Portsmouth. I am working on a page on his time in WW11, from 1938 The Tower Hamlets rifles through to The Durham light Infantry and the the Paras 1942/46. I am new to editing on Wikipedia, but can assure you any edits I make in Reference to the 2nd Independent will be thoroughly researched.

Welcome to Wikipedia. I note that you are new to editing here, so I would like to provide a couple of pointers.
I understand what you are saying about the picture, but you will need to read WP:VERIFY. The picture is taken from the Imperial War Museum. That is a reliable source. It is entirely possible that they got it wrong, but absent any other evidence, we have to take them at their word. As to working on a page about your father, you will have to demonstrate his notability. Hamish59 (talk) 18:12, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

2nd Independent Parachute Brigaid

Thanks for the reply and useful information. Its reassuring to know how much work goes into making sure Wikipedia is accurate. I will contact the Imperial war museum and try and get this error put right. That particular photo also appears on quite a few web sites with the incorrect caption.
