MOS:ICON[edit]

Please stop re-adding unnecessary flags and wikicode to the 2013 Six Nations Championship article. MOS:ICON says that flags should not be used for mere decoration, which they clearly were, and adding code to the article before it is necessary is pointless. – PeeJay 02:09, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:WAX, just because other rugby articles do something doesn't mean this one should. Also, why do you insist on being so utterly ham-fisted with your edits? 2013 Six Nations Championship[edit]

  • Per WP:DASH, there should be no spaces between the dash and the numbers in the scoreline.
  • In the line-ups, the icons should be split into separate columns, with cards coming first, then substitutions; cards and substitutions should not be in the same column.
  • In scorelines, scorers are almost always listed by surname only. Furthermore, there is no need to add times for conversions; since they are intrinsically linked to each try, people can intuit the time of each conversion from the time of the try and whether it has a 'c' (converted) after it. Also, if a player scores more than one of any type of score, the number is usually put before the times when they were scored.
  • Half-time scores are unnecessary as people can tell what the half-time score was from the times of the scores. Because it is unnecessary, it is not something we have ever done on Wikipedia before and most people see no reason to start now; after all, teams don't earn points based on the half-time scores. If you wish to imply some sort of narrative, write some prose about the matches.

I understand the column situation with regards to the cards and substitution times and I will leave them be. Regarding the conversion times and try names, there is no harm with A, having the full name and B, times conversions was scored as conversions were scored at a different time to the try. As I said, conversions are never scored more than a minute after tries, so it is unnecessary to add the time when they are scored. Full names are unnecessary because there is rarely anyone on the pitch with the same name as anyone else, and adding too many words makes the info look too cramped. Finally, we use icons for sin bins and not tries because when a player is sin-binned, they are shown a yellow card; plus, a yellow card icon is more succinct than saying 'Player X was sin-binned in the Yth minute and came back on in the Zth minute"; therefore, we use a yellow card icon to indicate a sin-binning. There is definitely no need to use an icon for tries because it says "Tries" right next to where they are listed, making any try icon redundant. The format I am trying to show you is the one that we have used for years on Wikipedia and it works perfectly well - please stop trying to change it. – PeeJay 19:50, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I accept the surname situation and the sin binning icons as they are used by official score sheets used by broadcasters and commentators. Ok, I admit that previous articles show number of scores before scoring times and I will leave that be and I apologize for changing that. However, as official score sheets show conversion times, they should be on the articles. Sandbox[edit]

I am not totally sure of the protocol here, but I am convinced that going into someone else's sandbox and making gross changes is unacceptable behavior. I believe that moving 2013 end-of-year rugby union tests from my sandbox without a by your leave is, at least, very rude. I would kindly ask you to never pull such a stunt again.

This article was a work in progress, not for general consumption. This article (or an earlier version of it) has been deleted twice, as far as I can see, purely on the grounds of WP:NOTE (WP:CRYSTAL was also cited, but incorrectly, I believe). I have been working on getting as many cites as possible to prove notablilty i.e. if a match is noted by half a doxen good sources, BBC, scrum.com, The Telegraph, etc. then it is surely notable. Apologies for jumping in but Hamish, you're right - WP:UP#OWN is the guideline. You can't prevent a user changing your talk page or sandbox, but I would never contemplate doing so myself unless the user had invited me to do so and I doubt many other editors would either. WP:NOTSTATS: "Long and sprawling lists of statistics may be confusing to readers and reduce the readability and neatness of our articles." It could effect the article that much a non-savvied up user of the website may not understand the article. Plus, 20kB is added to the page for no apparent reason. Please can you stop changing the winner of this series to "France on points difference". I've never come across a concept of a bilateral series being decided on "points difference" and I've even cited a ref from SANZAR to show the result as drawn. 2013 mid-year rugby test series[edit]

The IRB Nations Cup and IRB Tbilisi Cup are separate tournaments. The mid-year test articles refers to so called "friendly" test matches. They are not as such a tournament like the IRB Nation Cup or IRB Tbilisi Cup. The only exception is the South African Quadrangular Tournament, as it is an in home tournament and is part of the new global rugby calendar that is mention on the 2013 mid-year rugby test series article. Having names for the tournaments is just a fancy way to promote the matches. "Uruguay was runner-up at the Tbilisi Cup" sounds cooler than "Uruguay won two test matches and lost the third". Those tournaments are part of the mid-year test matches. --NaBUru38 (talk) 16:28, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In what way? The head coach flags, in my opinion, should only be there if their country is different to the one they are coaching. Mid year tests articles[edit]

These overview tables are a shambles just now, I'm sure you can see that. No team 'won' a tour. Some teams won test series, but a tour of three different countries is not a test series, and cannot be won. Australasia and North America are not teams, or even countries - they cannot win anything. Aggregate scores are meaningless and are unreferenced. They are irrelevant in rugby. They are not written from a neutral point of view - WP:NPOV - because they summarise the games from a northern hempisphere perspective. Instead of 'England tour...' etc, they could equally be 'mid-year tests in New Zealand' etc. They have to go, and should be replaced by a short section of prose, written from a neutral point of view. If I said I was to tour the world. What would you think. Visiting different countries across the world perhaps? So in rugby terms, a tour of a country means to play test or non-tests in that particular country.
If I said I was to tour Europe. What would you think. Visiting different countries across Europe perhaps? So again in rugby terms, a tour of a containment or rugby region mean to play tests or non-tests in that particular continent or rugby region.
The IRB (like FIFA) arranges the world into separate rugby regions; CAR (Africa), NACRA (North America), CONSUR (South America), ARFU (Asia), FIRA-AER (Europe) and FORU (Oceania, sometimes known as Australasia).
In reference to Irelands tour to North America, this means Ireland will play teams or nations in North America. In reference to Scotland tour to Australasia, this means Scotland will play teams or nations in Australasia.
Basically what I mean, I a team is playing one team on tour I.E Welsh tour to Japan, you can use to in the tour. If a team is playing more than one team in a region I.E Irish tour of North America you can use of Rugby.change (talk) 23:48, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's not right - it's entirely up to you to delete stuff from your talk page - per WP:User_talk_page#User_talk_pages "Users may freely remove comments from their own talk pages" it goes on to say - "though archiving is preferred". It's good practice to make an archive, which you can do by creating a page called User talk:Rugby.change/archive, and then copy what you don't want to that archive. I know I've asked this before, but can you please discuss formatting changes such as at New Zealand national rugby union team -- where you have omitted provinces from the squad again, despite the message talk:New Zealand national rugby union team#Current squad -- before you make them? You seem to have a habit of making changes without thinking whether it'd be better to discuss them first. Last thing - please don't use Wikipedia:Embedded citations. They're never a good idea. I've seen you replace full citations with embedded links in Australia national rugby union team. Why you'd do that I can't imagine, but it's especially important for the New Zealand article because it's a Featured Article. I'd rather not risk it being demoted because of sloppy referencing. In the future use the article talk page, and if you want my input ping my talkpage with a note saying there is a discussion going on somewhere else. Doing that enables a open/transparent discussion among whomever is interested in the article. It's generally bad form to have content discussions on user talk pagers rather than the article talkpage. Anyhow: just because other countries do one thing does not mean it's the best for the New Zealand article. Players in NZ are contracted to both Super Rugby and provincial sides. The All Blacks themselves list players as affiliated to both (see Squad announcement). As for the coach. We have the head coach listed in the infobox and the "Coaches" section (not the "Players" section!). We don't need to list the same information three/four times in one article. Why should the caps update be in bold at the top? The main reason this section exists is to list the players in the squad. Article titles and section headings[edit]

Hey. I've been meaning to point this out. You are probably unaware of this, but there are some policies on how to format article titles and section headings. There is a detailed article at Wikipedia:Article titles, but there is only really one thing I want to mention. At Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Article titles it emphasises a few points including:

Use "sentence case", not "title case"; that is, the initial letter of a title is capitalized (except in rare cases, such as eBay), but otherwise, capital letters are used only where they would be used in a normal sentence (Funding of UNESCO projects, not Funding of UNESCO Projects). – Italics added by me.

These rules also apply to section headings. So for example, rather than Individual Records, a section title would be Individual records. Or rather than World Cup Record, we would say World Cup record. I say this because you edit so many articles, so if you spot any incorrectly formatted section headings, would you mind correcting them? Someone will have to correct them eventually, and as you edit so much, I was hoping you'd be able to correct the formatting as you go? Thanks. Having it like the way you have put it like, is to show a reference to something or a source to back a piece of information. Edit like the way I put it, is a lot better way of linking a match report to an article. On that note, a match report should be used, rather than match statistics. Shudde, When I began editing that section, the under construction template was not there, and when I saved the article, no edit conflict occurred. Fair enough, I could have added the under construction template, but I wasn't aware of such a temple. In future, don't assume before accusing, bit of friendly advise. Referencing[edit]

I know we (and others) have had conversations along these lines with you before (see User talk:Rugby.change#New Zealand national rugby union team and User talk:Rugby.change#Embedded links) but can you please ensure that when you add references they conform to WP:CITEVAR?

That means you'll need to format the references in the same manner as the style currently used in the article (which is going to be more than just an embedded link). See WP:CITE which states Each article should use one citation method or style throughout; if an article already has citations, preserve consistency by using that method or seek consensus on the talk page before changing it.

For New Zealand national rugby union team and most other articles you edit this is going to mean using a citation template such as {{cite web}} and {{cite news}}. How to do this can be found at Wikipedia:Citing sources/Example edits for different methods and Wikipedia:Citation templates.

Embedded links are a terrible idea in any case (please read Wikipedia:Citing sources), but using them in articles that adhere to a different citation style is actually a breach of the project's content guidelines. I see you've made something of an effort to actually reference appropriately. But you're still doing half a job. A publisher or work parameter (or both) is needed for a reference. Just having a title and access date doesn't tell the reader the source. I'll also ask you not to misrepresent sources such as your edits to New Zealand national rugby union team; stating that a player is playing for a team or club they've never played for (but have only signed for) is pointless, probably a violation of WP:CRYSTAL and misleading. Bonus points in 2015 Rugby World Cup[edit]

You have had quite a bit to do with this article and its associated templates so I'm placing this note here. I noted that, according to 2015 Rugby World Cup, S. Africa were awarded two bonus points for losing by two points in their match against Japan, but according to the article one bonus point is awarded to a team which loses by seven points or fewer (not two). Some clarification might be needed. Also it took quite a while after the template for pool C was updated until the article reflected the change. Jodosma South Africa was awarded 2 bonus points 1. because they lost by fewer than 7 points 2. because they scored 4 tries.

This key and pool table had been created like its current structure and does not need to look more complicated. Readers are quite capable reading it like it is. Edinburgh Rugby European Challenge Cup Attendances[edit]

Hi Rugby.change I have seen you have been doing some really good work on the rugby pages such as European Cups. I had a query about how you worked out Edinburgh's attendances as I use my own spreadsheet for European and domestic rugby union games? You have Edinburgh's % capacity in the 40s while I have 54%. This is how I worked it out:

I was basing Murrayfield capacity based on having just the first tier open (12,464) instead of the whole stadium as this is what it states at the top of the wiki page. I am not sure if they opened the whole stadium for the La Rochelle game but it makes it quite confusing if some teams are just opening 1 tier of a massive stadium. What do you think? I apologise, I misspoke. Of course the coaches may be notable, but I don't believe their notability has any bearing on whether or not we list them in that article. I have never seen a team's entire coaching staff listed like that, especially in an article whose context is to inform readers of the players that were selected by each nation. Being hired by a national team is not relevant in the same way that being called up as a player is, since coaches are not called up on a squad-by-squad basis; sure, a head coach can fire his staff each tournament, but it just doesn't happen. But my opinion is beside the point, since I have never seen coaching staffs listed this way for major tournaments. Embedded links should not be used, because they are highly susceptible to link rot. Basically, if you stick in an external link to the Pro14 site, and they redesign their site, resulting in URLs being changed, there is nothing in embedded links that can be used to restore these links. Average Capacity European Cup Rugby[edit]

Hi. Really enjoy your edits for the European Rugby pages - they look great. I also do quite a bit of editing on the rugby union pages - most tier 2-4 English leagues - but also do some on the European rugby pages as well. With regards to average capacity I have a series of spreadsheets which I update each week for all of the European and English rugby competitions, including capacity dependent on different grounds. These spreadsheets take into account knock-out stages and do not impact on whether a club has qualified or not - I simply add the details to the spreadsheets. With this in mind I can add the capacity % without it interfering with the later stages. If you have any thoughts please let me know on my talk page. Thanks and keep up the good work. Thanks for your response. It is quite easy to add the home quarter final fixtures on my spreadsheet as I can copy and paste the details including the necessary formulas. There is more of a gray area in the semi-finals where neutral venues may not be as neutral as they seem. For instance if Munster have a 'home' game at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in the semis, does that count towards their attendance, if they are playing for example, a French club? 2019 Rugby World Cup prose[edit]

May I ask what was wrong with the prose for the group review so that you moved it to its specific pool articles. This is because with it currently going on it would be easier to get those references and summarize that particular group than looking for resources for a previous World Cup without taking a decent amount of time to get those resources needed to write the article. In the future, if me or someone else wanted to nominate the article for GA at least it would have a decent amount to work off towards getting that because of right now it probably would fail criteria 3 (as well criteria 5 but mainly because it's not complete yet). You could of easily mentioned that you were going to do that in the talk page but I see no evidence of that either.

Test status of Japan match for the Lions[edit]

Hi there mate, just thought I'd clarify a couple of edits I've made. The Lions Japan match isn't currently classified as a test for the Lions currently (it is for Japan and they've awarded caps) due to some policy involving the 1888 Club having to classify the status of the match (as it isn't a usual one of the three tests) and they're not meeting until later this year. Therefore test caps haven't been awarded by the Lions for it as of yet, but they may well do once the 1888 Club meet. Players will have been issued a Lions number though. Regards. Parc Lyonnais and Stade Pierre Maurois[edit]

I'm annoyed to reverse your edits each time : Stade Pierre Maurois is not in Lille, Parc Lyonnais is not in Lyon. I live in Lyon, Parc Lyonnais is 8 kilometers away from Lyon at Décines-Charpieux. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to travel to Parc Lyonnais from every Lyon citizens. Please stop your non sense edits. I see you don't know French specificities in Frnch territories, please read articles about locations in France. The Website of Rugby of Cup use "Stade de Lyon" and "Stade de Lille" because it is not their official name, and that not means that the "Stade de Lyon" is at Lyon and "Stade de Lille" is at Lille, in French we say Stade de Lyon" and "Stade de Lille" because the next bigest city is Lyon or Lille.
