Toolserver

It should not take too long before the move to the Toolserver will take place. Do you have any news on that regarding your tools and the effects of the move? The Banner talk 01:09, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

BTW: Toolserver-pages are not updated for days. Problem? The Banner talk 17:02, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
R'n'B, bless his heart, has done the migration to Tools. Does everything look OK now? --JaGatalk 20:03, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
You should kiss R'n'B for that, but you run the risk that he refuses to identify himself. Except a backlog everything is working perfectly again. The Banner talk 22:12, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Let's keep it clean, OK?  :-) Anyway, JaGa, if you've looked at the script status page, you may have noticed one odd thing. Most of the scripts are running much more quickly on Labs than they did on Toolserver; for example, the twice-daily Disambig Updates are taking about 10 minutes as opposed to about an hour. But the "hourly" DAB Challenge updates are taking longer; anywhere from 65 to 85 minutes, where they used to run in 20-30 minutes on the Toolserver. Any idea what could be slowing them down? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:05, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Well, since the problem is solely coming from the create_results_list() function, I suspect something in the API calls is causing problems. Oddly enough, the create_results_list() method of dab_procs.php is performing acceptably well. I've set logging_enabled=true in ch_procs.php to get a look at what's going on - maybe something is causing the method to go too deep into each article's history. When I get a chance to check out the output I'll update here. --JaGatalk 21:33, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
BTW, is there any sort of GUI for browsing the database on Tool Labs? I'm assuming there's a phpMyAdmin set up for Tool Labs, but I haven't been able to find out how to access it. --JaGatalk 21:40, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Can we do a one-day disambiguation contest?

Greetings! Is it possible to do a one-day disambiguation contest count? If so, is is possible to do one that covers all disambig fixes, and not just those on the usual lists? I think that a one-day event could stoke some extra interest in fixing these links. Cheers! bd2412 T 15:49, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes, but it would require bandwidth that I simply don't have right now. I'd say I'd make a copy of the monthly script, rename all the tables, remove the top 1000 limit, scrap all the bonus list stuff, and tally up at the end of the day. The updates might be slow, but it would work. It's a fun idea, but I just don't have the time for it. --JaGatalk 21:46, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
How about one just using the current lists? bd2412 T 21:52, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

dplbot request

Hi there! Im Aswin Kumar, an Admin from Tamil Wikipedia. We have enormous backlog(5000+) in disambiguation pages with links (see). For a small wiki such as ours with just 57000+ articles this is not good and we are unable to fix that easily. so we request your help to provide an extension to use dplbot for tawiki if possible. Excellent job on the dplbot by the way. Hope to hear a positive reply from you soon! thank you. --Aswn (talk) 11:34, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I think the last of the fixes to this article have been completed. I am the one who moved this article and incorrectly thought I had fixed all links to and from the subject article, as well as create a new disambiguation page to point to the three Lake Valencias in English Wikipedia. This turned out to be more complicated than any other article moves I have done. Sorry to cause someone else problems. Bill Pollard (talk) 09:59, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Slight issue.

Hello. I received a message from your bot claiming that I added a disambiguation link to the Sardinian page.

I, however, was not the one to do this. The user TonyBallioni was the one to do this.

I am quite befuddled by this whole matter. Would you care to explain why this has happened? Tharthandorf Aquanashi (talk) 16:16, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) First, Tharthan, your message is very confusing. You said the message from the bot claimed "that I added a disambiguation link to the Sardinian page." This makes it sound like Sardinian was the page that you edited. But when I looked at your user talk page, that is not what the bot's message says at all. It says, "when you edited Crown of the Kingdom (Sardinia), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sardinian[.]" I know this might sound like nit-picking, but if you want other people to help you resolve this issue, you need to explain it to us clearly enough so that we know where to look for problems.
Second, I looked at the history of the article Crown of the Kingdom (Sardinia). It turns out that this was an article that you initially wrote, although the title has been changed twice since then. The link to Sardinian appears in the very first version that you originally submitted, and it has not been changed by any later edit. (It seems obvious from the context that you meant the Sardinian language, so it would be very helpful if you would fix the link to point to that target.) I cannot tell what gave you the idea that TonyBallioni inserted this link, but it is clear from the history that he did not. You did. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 21:51, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Ahhhhh.... I see what you mean. My apologies, I misunderstood what the bot was referring to.
I corrected the target to be pointing towards the Sardinian_language page, per your request. Again, sorry for any misunderstanding. Tharthandorf Aquanashi (talk) 23:19, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't know what you thought you did, but Crown of the Kingdom (Sardinia) has not been edited at all since I posted my previous message. I'll fix the link now. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:09, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
My browser crashed before I could save my changes. Tharthandorf Aquanashi (talk) 12:09, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Recently I removed the "incoming links template" from the Bishop of Ross disambiguation page but your DPL bot has readded the template again because the disambiguation page has 30 or more links. The problem is that the disambiguation page only appears to have more than 30 or more links because of the Template:Scottish Church navbox. I've edited/updated the link in the Template:Scottish Church from "Bishop of Ross" to "Bishop of Ross (Scotland)", but for some reason or another the navbox still behaves that it has not been edited/updated. Why the navbox still does that I do not know. If you ignored those links which the navbox generates, then there'd be 5 or 6 links, a few of which have the same problem with the navbox, leaving only a few links left to the Bishop of Ross disambiguation page. So could you please look into this problem and have the incoming links template removed. Regards Scrivener-uki (talk) 22:09, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

I've cleaned this up, but note that there are still a dozen actual incoming links to be fixed. Cheers! bd2412 T 22:24, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Never mind, fixed those too. Cheers again! bd2412 T 22:30, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

So, I was notified of a disambiguation link on a page, and it suggested an edit, which produced this result. What the issue is is that it sent it to a red link, so I was wondering if you wanted to repeat this bug, because I have never encountered this before. Thanks! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 05:58, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

It suggested that because other articles were using that redlink. There's really nothing wrong with using a redlink, but in this case, the redlink should have been a redirect to blog. I've changed it to do that. I also changed your entry in the Harvard article to link directly to the blog article. --JaGatalk 07:59, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Automatic notification to projects?

Greetings! I have been tossing this idea back and forth in my head for a while. Sometimes, at the beginning of the monthly contest, I will notify specific projects about disambiguation pages relating to those projects that have large numbers of incoming links. For example, this notice to WikiProject Mathematics. Would it be possible to automate this, so that at the beginning of every month, various wikiprojects would get such a notice? I am thinking that some formula could be worked out based on the wikiprojects with which links on the disambiguation pages themselves are associated. Cheers! bd2412 T 17:56, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

I've thought along these lines too, but I doubt there would be many disambigs that are project-specific beyond Mathematics and some biology disambigs. I do wish there was some way to get the Mathematics WikiProject more involved since their dabs are usually the only ones I feel really need expert attention to get fixed properly. It would be great to have a math-dab contest for that project, but I just don't have time to set it up. It would be a huge undertaking. --JaGatalk 07:49, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
The dabs may not be project-specific as a whole, but the solutions may be. I would tend to say, for example, that almost any dab titled "Battle of Foo" for which any link on the page is under the military wikiproject should generate an alert to that project; any dab titled "Saint Foo" should generate an alert to the Catholicism wikiproject; links to things like "Spanish" and "Italian" and "German" should generate alerts to the respective wikiprojects for Spain, Italy, and Germany; and links to "heavy metal" should generate alerts to projects for both music and chemistry. Even if it turns out not to be the right project (e.g. alerting the chemistry project when the link is to a "heavy metal" band), the notice may spur someone to fix the link. bd2412 T 19:44, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I wonder if you can help with something that puzzles me. Today your "DPL bot" added Template:Incoming links to Woodbridge. I noticed that because I was the last person to update that page. It does have a lot of incoming links, most of which weren't there earlier today! What seems to have happened is that today someone created Template:Vaughan and added it to a lot of pages, all of which now link to Woodbridge. But I can't see how Template:Vaughan links to Woodbridge. It only links to Woodbridge, Ontario and Woodbridge College. Can you show me what I'm missing? Thanks! Stanning (talk) 21:37, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

For the record, the problem was that the template had a link to the disambig Woodbridge in the "Municipality" section. The creator fixed it quickly, and DPL bot removed the template. --JaGatalk 07:52, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I understand what happened, but the oddity is how long those incoming links have taken to disappear. I've been watching, just for interest: they've been going slowly, but even now, a week later, Special:WhatLinksHere/Woodbridge still shows two spurious incoming links, from Vaughan Mills and CFU758. Something is taking a very long time to replicate! Stanning (talk) 19:05, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
Ah, yes, we can thank the Job queue for that. When a template gets changed, Wikipedia puts all the articles that use that template in the job queue, so the links can be updated. For some reason, the queue is backlogged right now, so it isn't updating in a timely manner. You can force an update with a null edit. I did that for Vaughan Mills, and I left CFU758 for you to try out. Just edit, then save - by not even giving an edit summary, your null edit won't show up in the article's edit history. --JaGatalk 20:42, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Making a correction without it causing new problems

Thanks for the info concerning disambiguation. On another note, I wonder if it would be possible (and practicle) to make a change to the wikipage titled McHale's Navy (film). There were two movies with this title, one made in 1964 under the wikipage title McHale's Navy (1964 film) and the other was made in 1997 under the wikipage title McHale's Navy (film). To help remove confusion, I think the latter should be retitled as McHale's Navy (1997 film), but I fear doing so might undo all the links to the original title. Is it possible to change the title to McHale's Navy (1997 film) without it causing a problem with however many links there are? Tim Gruber (talk) 14:22, 30 December 2013 (UTC) Thanks Tim

Editors who don't use a script to see disambiguation links may want to fix them, but may not want to click through dozens or hundreds of links in an article to find the ones that need fixing. Would it be possible to adjust this template so that if the number of links is not unwieldy (I would say, if there are less than a dozen), the template actually lists the links that need to be fixed? Just a thought. bd2412 T 18:37, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

The "check" link has that pretty well covered. I worry that going any further could lead to confusion. --JaGatalk 07:31, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

EVoid page

I have acted on your bot showing me that certain links were pointing to disambiguation pages on the page, "EVoid". Thanks.

There is a note at the top of the page about the page having "multiple issues" — "This article needs more links to other articles to help integrate it into the encyclopedia. Please help improve this article by adding links that are relevant to the context within the existing text. (September 2013) — I did this a few days ago. How do we get someone to recognise this and remove the comment?

Regarding the second note — "This article relies on references to primary sources. Please add references to secondary or tertiary sources. DPL bot opting out...

...involves placing a template on a talk page, but I often archive it with preserving history, making any permanent templates on a talk page an annoyance. Hello, JaGa. You have new messages at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical).

Help needed with http://tools.wmflabs.org/dplbot/cat/untagged_uncats.php?limit=500 Technical 13 (talk) 02:53, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Just for a bit of background on this, what's happening is that a user created a new template, {{wikisource redirect}}, for soft redirects to Wikisource and has started using it to replace the old {{softredirect|wikisource}} on some pages. The uncats tool correctly avoided detecting soft redirects as "uncategorized articles" with the old template, but it is picking up pages which have the new template on them. Technical 13 did identify and fix a coding error in the new template, but it hasn't resolved the erroneous pickups.
So I guess the question is, is the uncats tool coded to avoid soft redirects by virtue of their inclusion in the hidden Category:Redirects to Wikisource, or is it coded to avoid them by virtue of the page's content consisting of the "softredirect" template itself? If it's the former, then I'm not sure what to suggest besides hunting for a coding bug — but if it's the latter, then could you add {{wikisource redirect}} to the tool code as a new exclusion? Bearcat (talk) 18:56, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
I'll have to look at the code to remind myself. I'm knee-deep in classwork right now, but I'll do my best to resolve this in a week or so. My guess, though, is that you're right - it will be an easy fix to add a new exclusion - but before that I'll have to do the legwork of making sure the fix would do no harm. I'll drop a note on your and Tech 13's talk pages when I've got an answer. --JaGatalk 21:06, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
OK, this should be resolved (notes on your talk) with tomorrow's update. Please let me know if you still see the problem tomorrow. Cheers, --JaGatalk 00:27, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
The update at this point is that two of the four pages that User:Technical 13 pulled out of Category:Temporary maintenance holdings to test the problem have dropped off uncats as of today, but the other two (Chinese proverb and Chinese proverbs) are still hanging on. I could obviously just throw them back in the bugtrap category again, but I want to leave them for now so that we can figure out if there's any other debugging that still has to happen. I'll keep you posted if anything changes, but as of right now those two pages are still stuck in the gears. Bearcat (talk) 07:38, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Ah, those are in Category:Redirects to Wikiquote; I had only made the change for Category:Redirects to Wikisource. I've added code to ignore the Wikiquote category as well. The Chinese proverb entries should disappear with tomorrow's run. --JaGatalk 22:00, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Dabs

Hello JaGa, I have two questions:

  1. On this page it says that I have fixed two das today, but I know I have done more, how does this work?
  2. How do I enter this "dab-challenge/competition"? Is it just to start fixing random dabs or do I have to enter some how first? (tJosve05a (c) 14:10, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Hello, and welcome! First, you don't have to enter; as long as you fix dabs your contributions will be noted. That being said, the contest is limited to two lists: the Monthly list (dabs with a lot of incoming links at the beginning of the month) and the Bonus list (dabs with 4 or fewer incoming links at the beginning of the month). I wish I could include all disambigs in the contest, but at present that would mean too many to process. If some of your contributions were missed, I'm guessing they were dabs that weren't part of the contest. If you continue to see problems, let me know and I'll figure out what's happening.
Let me know if you have any questions. I'm not always available, so if I don't respond quickly enough, the good people at WP:DPL can answer any questions you have as well. Thanks for stopping by. --JaGatalk 03:47, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

useful bot!

That DPL bot is a nice tool. I hadn't even realised that the link I made was to a disambiguation. Thanks! Gecko G (talk) 16:10, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

May 2014 disambig contest: let's do it again!

Greetings fellow disambiguator! Remember back in February when we made history by clearing the board for the first time ever, for the monthly disambiguation contest? Let's do it again in May! I personally will be aiming to lead the board next month, but for anyone who thinks they can put in a better effort, I will give a $10 Amazon gift card to any editor who scores more disambiguation points in May. Also, I will be setting up a one-day contest later in the month, and will try to set up more prizes and other ways to make this a fun and productive month. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:48, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

List of Question Time Episodes - disambiguation template

Hi there, I am writing to ask for some confirmation on the disambiguation template, as I made a great effort to make sure that every link directed to the page itself. Could you perhaps show me one or two examples where this might be the case. Regards

It looks like you got almost all of them - great work by the way - and I was only able to find two: John Gale, from 20 Mar 1980, and Lincoln, on 29 May 2008. --JaGatalk 04:40, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello. I was looking at your tool for disambiguation pages with links, and I wonder if is there any chance to make something similar for the spanish Wikipedia (I mean, if it is as easy as changing a parameter in the code or it's more difficult). We used to have a good tool for this but nowadays I am not able to find any. Thank you in advance! --Pietrus (talk) 00:54, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia from the Anatomy Wikiproject!

Welcome to Wikipedia from Wikiproject Anatomy! We're a group of editors who strive to improve the quality of anatomy articles here on Wikipedia. One of our members has noticed that you are involved in editing anatomy articles; it's great to have a new interested editor on board. In your wiki-voyages, a few things that may be relevant to editing wikipedia articles are:

  • Thanks for coming aboard! We always appreciate a new editor. Feel free to leave us a message at any time on the WikiProkect Anatomy talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. Please leave a message on the talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
  • You will make a big difference to the quality of information by adding reliable sources. Sourcing anatomy articles is essential and makes a big difference to the quality of articles. And, while you're at it, why not use a book to source information, which can source multiple articles at once!
  • We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
  • Lastly, why not try and strive to create a good article! Anatomical articles are often small in scope, have available sources, and only a limited amount of research available that is readily presentable!

Feel free to contact us on the WikiProkect Anatomy talk page if you have any problems, or wish to join us. I wish you all the best on your wiki-voyages! --LT910001 (talk) 08:51, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Request for comment

Hello there, a proposal regarding pre-adminship review has been raised at Village pump by Anna Frodesiak. Your comments here is very much appreciated. Many thanks. Jim Carter through MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 06:47, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

It wears a bit thin.

This bot is an essential part of Wikipedia so don't get me wrong when I say I would like it to be substantially rewritten. For a user with a dozen or more stumbling edits it sets the right tone- but when your edit count reaches 4 figures, and the local addiction clinic starts sending you personlised invitations - the tone is slightly patronising. So I propose that the bot examines my user page, for some sort of marker, may be a hidden category to see how many times it has visited before, on gleaning the information that I am visited regularly- it just sends me a notification with a simple message. "Oops, XXXXX you used on YYYYY is a disambiguation page- this edit needs attention" if there is no record that I have been visited before I get the full treatment as before. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 12:45, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

I received a notice from DPL bot that I had added a disambiguation link to an article, and probably did it by accident. In this case I did it on purpose in a hatnote. Maybe this is uncommon enough that the bot doesn't need to worry about it. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:32, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Thank you

Your role in the realm of Wikipedia is greatly appreciated.

Dear DPL bot,

I had imagined you as a nanobot escaped from a Turing machine until I saw the name JaGa and heard the word 'Georgia' in a rich accent. Thank you for being there, and helping as well!

Jakelove (talk) 21:40, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

D'oh! Never occurred to me that there might be more than one "House of Frankenstein!" Now fixed; thanks for the catch. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cadavra8 (talkcontribs) 16:51, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Disaster!

Looks like DPL Bot is down or has a serious hiccup. Could you apply some TLC to this brave Bot? The Banner talk 19:12, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

DPL Bot

Hi, the dab solver tool is no longer working so you might want to update your bot.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:01, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Definitely needs an update - see discussion at Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard#DPL bot now writing dead links on user talk pages Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:47, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
OK that should do it. Unfortunately all I could do is strip out the text, which is a real loss. --JaGatalk 03:15, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) what Python error?? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 01:18, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
@R'n'B: Must have been my failure to destroy the cache... The current one when I load is:

ProgrammingError(1146, "Table 'p_dpl_p.ch_results' doesn't exist", None)
oursql Error (1142): SELECT command denied to user 'u2815'@'10.68.16.7' for table 'namespacename'

PermissionsError: (1142, "SELECT command denied to user 'u2815'@'10.68.16.7' for table 'namespacename'", None)

By the looks of it it appears to be a user rights error. TLA 3x ♭ 01:44, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

Not sure what you're loading, but since the first line in the exception is '/usr/lib/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py', it appears to be an error relating to Dispenser's dab_solver tool (which, as discussed above, is now defunct), not an error in anything done by DPL Bot. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:21, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
@R'n'B: I didn't realize that. Sorry about that. TLA 3x ♭ 15:53, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

message from you...

I got two messages from you about "disambiguation" links I added to two pages, but though I did edit both those pages, I did not add the links you mention... Newchaz64 (talk) 20:50, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

  • (talk page stalker) @Newchaz64: This was your edit to Culture of St. Louis, in which, among various other changes, you put [[ brackets ]] around the words "Forest Park", thereby adding a link to the disambiguation page Forest Park. Another user has since fixed the link so it now links to Forest Park (St. Louis). If you are still unclear on the concept, just click on the two preceding links, so that you can see the difference between the two pages that they connect to. (The other message was over two years old, so it's not worth tracking it down....) --R'n'B (call me Russ) 10:18, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Jack Johnson confusion

Thanks for the message regarding what I did to Austin & Ally: Turn It Up. I had no idea there was more than one Jack Johnson. I just fixed it so that it only leads to the singer Jack Johnson. The first track on the Austin & Ally: Turn It Up album is called "Upside Down" and contains an interpolation of Jack Johnson's song of the same name. If you listen to the chorus from the Austin & Ally song "Upside Down" and then listen to the chorus of Jack Johnson's "Upside Down", you'll notice the similarities. Thanks again for the 411; I've fixed the problem. Peace! Jake "JJR" Rivera (talk) 19:02 ET, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Dab solver

Dab Solver appears to be back, and can be reached (via redirection) from the same toolserver.org URL as before. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 18:47, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

But not in Tool Labs? Is this a temporary thing, then? --JaGatalk 16:25, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
You're asking the wrong guy. :-) All I know is that he seems to be hosting it on a non-WMF site, and has the Toolserver URL redirecting to that site. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 17:35, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
