Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Bands and musicians

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Bands and musicians. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Bands and musicians|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Bands and musicians. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.

Fails WP:GNG. A lot of this article relies on Discogs links, leading to a timeline of album appearances or background vocal appearances. The proclaimed singles "I Want You for Myself", "Indigo Waltz", and anything else mentioned does not list her as the singer or featured singer. Furthermore, this articles fails WP:SINGER. There is a dead "Billboard World Music" link which simply stated the release of her song "Can I Come Over" but it never charted. Everything else is unsourced and there are sources available to support the information in the article. Sackkid (talk) 04:23, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Has had a single or album on any country's national music chart: in this case, subject had the album titled Dzanja Lalemba that was the bestseller 14 years ago countrywide. Subject is also the pioneer of Malawi Contemporary Music and one of the country's notable musician [1]https://mwnation.com/mlaka-soldier-set-for-stage-reunion/.
  2. Has released two or more albums on a major record label: subject has released 13 albums under the renowed and the first band in Malawi, the Zembani Band, owned by Lucius Banda [2]https://mwnation.com/mlaka-soldier-set-for-stage-reunion/, [3]https://mwnation.com/mlaka-rolls-back-hands-of-time/ . I found this that talks about subject. I also found records in printed books, see here, and this in Dutch , this too, etc. To me this provides GNG that can be used to sustain the article per WP:NEXIST.--Tumbuka Arch (talk) 11:47, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BLP does not meet WP:COMPOSER, WP:MUSICBIO, WP:NMUSICOTHER or even general. The "awards" are not prestigious but merely submissions to ensembles (Prix Annelie de Man Ensemble Black Pencil Prize, 150-Years-of-Music-Technology Composition Competition Prize) that "award for performance" in keeping with sites such as composersite.com. Heavy COI that results in sources that are either primary or closely related to subject that mention or preview works. Notability by association in list of compositions (a companion piece for Les cinq doigts by Igor Stravinsky, a companion piece for All-Night Vigil by Sergej Rachmaninov,, Companion piece for Das Lied von der Erde by Gustav Mahler) without real content within a Career section. Stating premieres (The world première was at Koningshoeven Abbey on Saint Cecilia's feast day, 22 November 2014., world premiere was present during the opening of the 25th edition of the festival at De Doelen in Rotterdam, conducted by Valery Gergiev), musical organizations, conductors, etc is no different than any other contemporary composer having their works performed around the world today yet no article representation here at WP. Mere filler and WP:FLUFF content.

Comment. Granted your observations may be correct. However, you mentioned #11 (Has been placed in rotation nationally by a major radio or music television network), can you specifically back those claims with RS found within the article? I am finding dead links and non-links. As for Criterion 3: as well, what "biographical dictionary" are you talking about found within the article? Thank you. Maineartists (talk) 17:11, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Here are the sources in question:

  • 1. worldmusicdays2019.ee. 2019. No longer exists. The site itself is self-promotional by sign-in members.
  • 2. muziekencyclopedie.nl is not an "Encyclopedia". The actual site is: muziekweb.nl/. It is a Dutch lending library. It lists BLP's album Creator of Angels.
  • 4 a,b,c,d,e,f is not a continuous "rotation nationally by a major station". It is merely listing the same broadcast of the BLP's works similar to other musicians featured on the same radio program "Recent broadcasts from Concertzender Amsterdam Organ Park".
  • 5 is the same as 4. Other musicians are also listed multiple times as featured "in residence".
  • 7, 8 & 9 are same.
  • 11, 12, 13: Orgelpark again.
  • 18. Primary to BLP website
  • 19. Same as 4
  • 20. Deadlink
  • 24 & 25. Same as 1. No longer exists. The site itself is self-promotional by sign-in members.
  • 26, 27, 28 no longer exist or bring to a different page.
  • 30-34 are shared with other composers. Not notable specifically to BLP.

Maineartists (talk) 17:43, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The links from Concertzender, which is (or was?) the Dutch public radio channel, establish criterion 11 of WP:MUSICBIO. Criterion 5 is met without question; that alone is sufficient rationale for me to vote "keep". I'm not sure what happened to subject's entry at Muziekencyclopedie. Presumably it was moved elsewhere. At any rate, the entry is archived here, which qualifies it as valid per WP:LR, WP:MDLI, WP:KDL, and WP:DEADREF. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 19:43, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You keep saying this: "The links from Concertzender, which is (or was?) the Dutch public radio channel, establish criterion 11 of WP:MUSICBIO" but provide no additional sourcing. Just how many "links" are you seeing on this page? Criterion for 11 is for "bands, singers, rappers, orchestras, DJs, musical theatre groups, instrumentalists, etc.". Meaning, charting, Billboard, i.e. Taylor Swift song playing No. 1 in the country continuously (in rotation) across national radio stations for weeks at a time. The BLP's radio play was a singular event at the Amsterdam Organ Park. The dates next to the pieces listed on the one-event program are not when they were aired but when they were written. The program was radio-played only once; not in rotation. Please provide additional sources that show a national radio station (or stations) that has played the BLP's music "in rotation. He would have to have a work that is played by classical radio station(s) in rotation; i.e. Taylor Swift. However, I do see the correct link to the Music Encyclopedia (now "Sound and Vision") entry that is basically a three-line bio taken from his own website. If this is what qualifies for entry at WP, then at the very least, this article requires a heavy, heavy scrub and re-construction. Obviously, it will pass this 2nd AfD so I will start reassembly off-site. Thanks Maineartists (talk) 02:40, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
COMMENT I am at tendency toward agree at the moment for keep; and I will most certainly be going in and attending with strong intent for an intense cleanup, but it can wait until this closes. Gathering consensus for a complete overhaul will allow a Talk Page reference as to they "why" without the need for debate. I expect there may be push-back due to the COI issue at the article. As well, there are RS being brought here that are not at the article itself that will come in handy; as most sources are now defunct, dead or primary. Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 15:20, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
COI can be cleaned up. This is an example of a composer article that I clean up every now and then. So it doesn't contain the information that the person would include himself. It's still an important resource as this composer is constantly played by wind orchestras ("bands") and other ensembles around the US and hence is frequently read. Worthy both of the composer and of WP. Actually I created this one after the bio had been unjustifiably banned. It has the tendency to turn into PEACOCK once in a while. gidonb (talk) 15:36, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"this composer is constantly played by wind orchestras ("bands") and other ensembles around the US and hence is frequently read." Where? Please provide sources to back this claim. So far, I can only find performance sources within his native land. Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 18:38, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Click on the linked "this" to see to which composer I refer. gidonb (talk) 19:16, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
??? I'm refering to Alfred Momotenko Levitsky. Not some other composer or their article. So far, we are just talking in circles here and also on the article page as another editor is merely citing sources about the same two things: Orgel Park concert and Creator of Angels CD. But nothing new has been found. There is still no evidence of "rotation" on radio. Aside from the one mere mention in a music publication, all that's being done at present is overkill of sources about the same two achievements. Maineartists (talk) 19:32, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What other editors write does not apply to my opinion. I showed you what a cleaned up composer article may look like. Otherwise I have nothing to add. Neither do you, it seems. Rest assured that I had read the intro before forming my opinion! gidonb (talk) 20:17, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't able to find significant coverage of the subject in reliable sources. There's a brief biography of the band on AllMusic, it's mentioned in a review of another band's album ("Bemberger, Hughes and Peterson also played together in an obscure band called Gabardine, which released one EP before disbanding in 1998.") and there's another description here (I have no idea if Hard Noise is reliable). toweli (talk) 15:53, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have carried out WP:BEFORE for this BLP about a musician, and added an interview to the External Links section. I cannot find other independent, reliable, significant coverage to add - there is a footnote about his teaching in a book about music education, but I don't think it's significant enough to add. I don't think the existing references demonstrate that he meets WP:GNG, WP:ANYBIO or WP:NMUSICIAN. There are few secondary sources listed; the best may be the concert announcement in Connect Savannah. Redirect to Rapidgrass is a possibility, but he was performing before joining them, and is only mentioned in the article about them as a past member. Tacyarg (talk) 19:36, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not finding much of anything in a BEFORE search on this musician other than YouTube videos of a few of their performances. None of the usual press reviews of notable musicians. The article is part of a walled garden on the Munshi/Munsi family. Of the current citations, the Ghosh book is used as a source in all of these Munsi articles, and it is not clear if it is a connected source. The Eklund source is connected as an extended family member. The musician does not meet inclusion criteria for WP:NMUSICIAN nor WP:GNG. Bringing it here for the community to decide. While @Vanderwaalforces is correct about the status of this article's subject specifically regarding WP:NMUSICIAN, it does seem to fair slightly better by WP:GNG given a number of the citations point back to reliable sources such as major publications. Also, the subject appears to be an up and coming musical act with not very much but nonetheless, a number of verifiable articles citing solo works and in a few more cases, co-citations with notable subjects via creative associations. On a recent edit to this article, I noticed a few bigger publications confirmed hitherto unverified sections, and replaced the citations on the affected section. If the subject is essentially an upcoming musical act gaining decent coverage for its works, a better alternative might be to watch article for a while for any improvement on its adherence to WP:NMUSICIAN, before an outright deletion. Does not pass the notability guidelines for WP:MUSIC. Released one album with a few singles that did not chart. Not via a major label. Karst (talk) 11:27, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be a vanity page for a musician. While his body of work is extensive, I cannot find any substantial online coverage of him to fulfill WP:BASIC or WP:MUSICBIO. The second reference states that he has topped the UK music charts twice, but this appears to be a fanzine of questionable reliability and I can't find any mention of him at the official chart website. ~dom Kaos~ (talk) 08:32, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HELLO ALL - I am the ARTIST - COMPOSER/recording artist. This page looks as though it was originally created by fans. However I do ask it is NOT deleted WHY >> I am an international award winning artist (instrumental music) 6 gold disc, 1 platinumn and a life achievement award, at least 4 million fans international. I also own a record label managing other artists. A 33yr career. My own radio show also. UK based. Numerous hits. Career is still ongoing. Instrumental music doesnt tend to be found in charts or have the hype of pop music so whilst I am not as trackable you will find me all over itunes, spotify, Amazon, Facebook, youtube, google, as one of the most famous artists of my genre. These are the notability guidelines Wikipedia follows for keeping articles on musicians: WP:MUSICBIO. We need reliable sources (WP:RS) to show the article subject meets the criteria. At present it's unlikely there are enough sources, so if you can provide such references that would significantly help. (Note I have been unable to verify the Gold certifications via the British Phonographic Industry website, so help on that would also be useful). ResonantDistortion 07:04, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Very highly advertorialized ("known for being one of the most fearless and versatile Premiere Leading Ladies", "She enjoys watching movies, baking, and absolutely enjoys Cake, Fried Chicken and Pizza", etc.) WP:BLP of an actress and musician not properly sourced as passing inclusion criteria for actresses or musicians. There are statements here that would be valid notability claims if they were referenced properly, but nothing so "inherently" notable as to exempt her from having to cite proper sources just because of what the article asserts -- but this was "sourced" almost entirely to IMDB pages, Wikidata items and other Wikipedia articles, none of which are acceptable or notability-supporting sources, and after stripping those out all that's left is three short blurbs that aren't substantive enough to get her over WP:GNG all by themselves if they're the best she can do for proper third party coverage.
I'm willing to withdraw this if somebody with much more knowledge about Philippine musical theatre than I've got can rewrite it neutrally and source it properly, but it can't be kept in this state of writing tone and sourcing. Bearcat (talk) 13:58, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please familiarize yourself with our conflict of interest rules, because "the person in this article is also involve now in the revision" is the worst thing you could possibly have said here. Bearcat (talk) 18:27, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thanks just for the verification of the information, however the info is now being updated as per the article published by the news or legal website, please be patient.. thank you for your help. Jhenie1326 (talk) 18:55, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete or Draftify. I went through the references, which were inconsistent in formating, and reformatted many of them. I also checked to see if the refs support the information. They do not support the Education and Personal Life section. I also do not see indepth sources; most are brief "fluffy" bits. As it looks like this article is recent and is still being worked on, draftify may be the best solution. Lamona (talk) 03:46, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

None of the sources presently used establish notability (either due to not saying much about Davey, or not being RS, or not being independent), and I wasn't able to find significant coverage of Robin Davey in reliable sources, only mentions. There also seems to be COI editing in the history of the article, such as edits from User:Growvision01. toweli (talk) 13:47, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
