Redirecting a Published page to a new published page

Hello,

I need to create a redirect from one published page to another. Is there a easy way to do this, or could someone explain the process to me?

@Will.Monroe FMDefense Does WP:Redirect help? It would be unusual to overwrite an existing article that has some content with a redirect to another article. The SEMT Pielstick page is linked on multiple US Navy Vessel pages stating that it is the propulsion for the vessel. However, this is incorrect because the SEMT Pielstick engine is manufactured by Fairbanks Morse Defense.

So, I would like to redirect the SEMT Pielstick page to the Fairbanks Morse Defense page. That way the link to the propulsion on the Vessel pages is correct. Will.Monroe FMDefense (talk) 15:29, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

I think, potentially, you've used the wrong wording, which is totally understandable. When we say "redirect", we mean to replace the content on a page with a template that, when you click on that page, it opens another article.

From what I can tell, you want to change individual links from within an article? Could you clarify which article? I found SEMT Pielstick, Fairbanks Morse Defense but no US Navy Vessel. Lee Vilenski ^{(talk • contribs)} 16:32, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

USS Detroit (LCS-7)

Next to propulsion it has "2 Colt-Pielstick diesel engines" linked. I would like this to link to Fairbanks Morse Defense, since that is the manufacturer of the engine.

Is the only way to replace this by making an edit on the USS Detroit (LCS-7) page? Or can I change the 2 Colt-Pielstick link to redirect to Fairbanks Morse Defense. Will.Monroe FMDefense (talk) 17:24, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello, Will Monroe FMDefence.

As a technical matter, you could edit the redirect page Colt-Pielstick to point to Fairbanks Morse Defense instead of to SEMT Pielstick: you can get to it by picking the link Colt-Pielstick, and then picking the message at the top of the page which says "(Redirected from Colt-Pielstick)".

However, I don't think you should do this for two reasons. The first is that it is not obvious that the change should be made: neither SEMT Pielstick nor Fairbanks Morse Defense mentions this engine, so neither the existing redirection nor your proposed redirection is currently supported by a reference.

Secondly, judging by your username, you have a conflict of interest in applying this change - in fact, I would guess that you are what Wikipedia counts as a paid editor. If this is so, you must make a formal declaration of this status (this is part of the terms of use - see that link for how to do it), and you may not directly edit articles associated with your employer.

So what I think you should do is

1. (assuming you are employed by FMD) make your formal declaration on your user page.
2. Request the insertion of a (suitably sourced) statement into Fairbanks Morse Defense explaining that the COLT-Pielstick engine was manufactured by FMD; otherwise the redirect will be unexplained to a reader that arrives there. You should not make this edit yourself, but should raise an WP:edit request at the talk page Talk:Fairbanks Morse Defense (this talk page has not so far been created, which is why the link is red).
3. Either on that talk page, or at WP:RFD, open a discussion proposing the change to the redirection.

@M William Wykoff: I assume you are talking about Category:Songs about Texas. If so, the reason it is not included is because there is no article about the song: categories are simply designed to compile lists of Wikipedia articles in that category, and are not intended as an exhaustive list or even a list of the most prominent examples. In any case, there is little point in posting material for an article on this page: it is unlikely that anybody is going to do anything with it. If you want to add material to an existing article, you can either do so yourself (bearing in mind that you should summarise what the source says, not reproduce it; and that generally we need reliable sources, which almost all blogs are not); or else post on the talk page of the relevant article, inviting people to help you to add the material. --ColinFine (talk) 09:01, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Change Photo

If it is a living person, the photograph would have to be free to use, ie not copyrighted in any way; see WP:UPIMAGE. Also, representing another person on a professional level can lead to problems with a conflict of interest, but provided that the suggested photo is uncontroversial this shouldn't be a problem. Tubescreamer606, I imagine that you are also known as Tuber Screamer 606 and that this is about Michael Guy Chislett (about which article, see Talk:Michael Guy Chislett). The current photo of Chislett is terrible; it should be easy to take a better one -- I mean, take it yourself by pressing the button on your camera (or phone); I don't mean filch it from elsewhere on the web -- and to upload it (not to Wikipedia but instead to Wikimedia Commons). OK, five-year-old Screamer. You take a photo. (Then the copyright will be unambiguously yours, singular.) Then you go to Wikimedia Commons. (It's thataway.) Make sure you're logged in. (You can use the same login as for Wikipedia.) Click on "Upload file" and follow the prompts. @Tubescreamer606 The photo update has been done, as you probably already know. Best practice here is now to place the {{Paid}} template on your userpage (currently a redlink) and also mention there that you previously edited as Tuber Screamer 606. Look at WP:VALIDALT for what sort of things you might do in future with that account but, for simplicity, just don't use it again. Where to put dead link tag

I was wondering where I'm supposed to put the dead link tag. Template:Dead_link wasn't particularly clear, since it only gave an example for a totally bare link and a few examples for CS1 citations. GrapesRock (talk) 23:32, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

You do not put it anywhere. Instead, you visit the Internet Archive and there see that the Wayback Machine has made plenty of scrapes of this page. You choose a suitable example among these, and link to that. -- Hoary (talk) 23:46, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

I've recently been going through mis-marked dead links so I reckon that there is going to be a time that I encounter a perma-dead link for a citation of the format discussed above, so I'm still curious where I'd be supposed to put the tag GrapesRock (talk) 23:56, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

@GrapesRock: The examples of how to use the template {{Deadlink}} on its documentation page can essentially be applied to your example as well since they all add the template right before the </ref> syntax. As long as you do that, things should be fine. If you look at template's documentation page and find it to be sparce, you can always try asking on the template's talk page for help. You could also try clickiing on "What links here" in the left side panel of the template's page. Often you can get a good idea as to how to use a template by seeing how it's being used others, and "What links here" will show you a list of pages where the template is being used. In corresponding with an organization about giving a photo with a copyleft license for their Wikipedia entry, they requested information about how to remove a semi-private studio address from their Wikipedia page. @A Tree In A Box: There isn't one. Our privacy policies are about people, not organizations. We usually omit street addresses which aren't for public visitors but that's more about what is considered encyclopedic. I don't know the circumstances here. If it's the main address of an article subject and can be found on their website then we might show it. If it's a secondary location and they hide it from the public then we should probably omit it. Person does not belong on page

The page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:German_military_personnel_killed_in_World_War_I contains the name of Karl Schwarzschild.

Help in Chinese Wikipedia's block

I have been wrongfully and non-logically block in Chinese Wikipedia, but my Chinese Wikipedia's IPBE have been cancelled. I can't appear in my talk page and the unblock email have no reply. So what is the solution for this problem? --Gongxiang01 (talk) 03:59, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

@Gongxiang01: Each of the local Wikipedias is separate project with it's own policies and guidelines; so, there's not really anything anyone here on English Wikipedia can do to help with a block on Chinese Wikipedia. You are going to need to ask about that on Chinese Wikipedia. There is, however, an English Wikipedia page at WP:OPENPROXY which explains English Wikipedia's policy regarding "open proxies". If you look in the left side panel under "Languages", you'll find there is a Chinese Wikipedia page related to the same topic at zh:维基百科:开放代理方针.Perhaps the information on that page will explain what you'll need to do to get your account unblocked. For reference, might also want to take a look at the Chinese Wikipedia page zh:维基百科:IP封禁豁免, which corresponds to English Wikipedia's WP:IPBE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:14, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

English is too difficult

English Wikipedia's language is too difficult, it is hard to understand. Only Simple English Wikipedia can understand easily. It should be use a easier grammar, and expressions.

Hi Gongxiang01, I'm sorry you have difficulty reading the English Wikipedia. Unfortunately the answer to your question is no: the English Wikipedia does not consider how easily readers with a limited understanding of English will be able to understand articles here; that is exactly the purpose of the Simple English Wikipedia and Wikipedias in other languages. If this Wikipedia were written in the same way as the Simple English Wikipedia, why have the Simple English Wikipedia at all? A block of one person, rightfully or not, cannot cause us to entirely rewrite Wikipedia on their behalf. If you are able to understand the Simple English Wikipedia but not the English Wikipedia, the clear solution to me would simply be using the Simple English Wikipedia. ​ It's not clear what you're asking? Do you want to know whether you can read other language Wikipedias? Do you want to know whether you can edit other language Wikipedias?

Regarding reading other language Wikipedias, you should be able to do that as long as you can in some way access the Internet. Being blocked from editing Wikipedia doesn't prevent someone from reading Wikipedia; so,unless there is some kind of technical reason stopping you from accessing the Internet, you should be able to read pretty much any Wikipedia page in any language you want. Now, given that your previous posts are related to Chinese Wikipedia, any technical restrictions that might be in place where you live that prevent you from accessing the Internet or certain IP address are things that probably beyond the scope of this Help Desk and you will need to address on your end.

If you're asking whether you being blocked on Chinese Wikipedia will stop you from editing other language Wikipedias, then the answer is no. Each local Wikipedia is, in principle, separate from the others when it comes to blocks; so, being blocked on Chinese Wikipedia only applies to editing Chinese Wikipedia. The fact that you're posting here at the English Wikipedia Help Desk means that you're not blocked from editing English Wikipedia; so, as long as your edits comply with English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, you should have no problem here on English Wikipedia. The same should also apply to any other language Wikipedia. It's only when an account is globally blocked that its unable to edit any of the various Wikipedia or other Wikimedia Foundation project pages.

Finally, if you're finding it difficult to understand the English used in the responses you're receiving, you can always try to use something like Google Translate (zh:Google翻译) to translate them into a language (e.g. Chinese) that you better understand. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

I wonder what's happening here. The OP changed the name of the principal from "Michael Jones" (with a reference) to "Karl Hoffman" (no reference). The external link to the school's official web site gives the message "This school's website has moved to a new URL or is inactive." https://www.sfusd.edu/school/lowell-high-school appears to be the school's real official web site, and names the principal as "Mike O. font too small: new wikipedia format after Microsoft Edge update?

fixing broswer preferences didnt help and i couldnt find any other guides regarding this issue. tried reinstalling the browser and tinkering with wiki account settings but no luck;

Hi @Space011. Maybe an obvious question, but have you tried resetting the browser zoom? Go to the three dots menu ... in the top right corner, and adjust Zoom.

@Space011: You can also zoom with shortcuts: Ctrl++ for larger, Ctrl+- for smaller, Ctrl+0 for standard. It also zooms other content like images. If you are logged in with Vector 2022 as skin at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering then you hay have a glasses icon at top of pages to change text size. Changing the name of an entry

Hi! I am working on an update to a page for a large institution that is undergoing an official name change. Is it possible to edit the page title of the current entry (I'm not finding that option), or do I need to create a new one and update the current one to say it is no longer?

Help with {{italic title}}

I've got a case of {{italic title}} not playing nice in {{infobox book}} at Resistance (Star Trek). It's doing the default thing, which means "Resistance" (a novel) is italicized while "Star Trek" is not. I can't get it to italicize both, even with DISPLAYTITLE. Notably good articles created by a banned or blocked user

I am aware of the G5 policy Wikipedia has. However, what if an article created by a banned or blocked user was actually a good article, well sourced, well written, and about a notable subject worthy of having its own page on Wikipedia? Is there no exception to the G5 policy? Per Wikipedia:Copyrights surely we are allowed to copy what was written in a deleted article from a banned or blocked user and repost it? I understand the purpose of G5 is to prevent further disruption to Wikipedia and Wikipedia:BLOCK and Wikipedia:BAN make that clear: to prevent further disruption. However, surely if the user has since been banned and the deleted article they created has been carefully analyzed and confirmed that it was actually a well written, well sourced, and good article, that such deleted article could be restored, even if it is simply copied and pasted by another Wikipedia user? Inexpiable, the rules are short, see WP:BANREVERT. Note that G5 is for articles published by a banned editor after their ban, not those written before the editor was banned. See also WP:COPYWITHIN for rules on copying within Wikipedia. You could ask the deleting admin to copy to draft or ask at WP:REFUND if the deleting admin is not available. Whether a particular article is "actually a good article" is likely to be a matter of opinion. TSventon (talk) 17:23, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Table of Contents Missing

Hi, I'm not sure what I did but now, when I read articles, there is no table of contents. I just see the toolbar on the right and the main menu (with nothing above/below it) on the left. The only things I've really done with settings is enable Twinkle, Hotcat, etc. so I'm not sure why it could suddenly disappear. Any advice on how to bring it back? Hi @GoldRomean. This is a frustrating new feature of the Mediawiki Vector 2022 skin, which is rolling out to users.

The ToC is now automatically hidden. You can find it in the new icon next to the article title. If you click that icon, you can then select move to sidebar and it'll go back to how it used to look. Qcne (talk) 18:30, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

cite book

i put the cursor in the correct place in the text, then i clicked "cite" from the toolbar, then from the popup offering "add a citation" at the top, in a row below offerings are "automatic manual re-use", in a line below that is "website book" i choose "book". then a column of fields is shown on the left, at the top is "hide unused fields" i choose that. the used fields all have solid blue boxes with white check marks, EXCEPT "title". this field has a grey solid box with a white check mark. ON THE RIGHT IS A COLUMN OF EMPTY ENTERING BOXES. the entering boxes are all empty EXCEPT “TITLE” WHICH HAS AN ASTERISK AT THE FAR RIGHT. above EVERY one, there is a name and instructions how to enter information in that box, INCLUDING TITLE. here is the instruction above the title box "The title of the book; displays in italics Field is required."

@MikeMARS52: The asterisk indicates the field is required, meaning you have to fill it out. An asterisk is a standard symbol for this. The asterisk is not part of the value of the field. The checkbox is grey to indicate you cannot change it (because it's a required field you aren't allowed to remove). Grey is a standard way to mark something you cannot change. I think the Title field and entry box are not of any interest. My bad. the title of the book is coming through to the template created reference at the bottom of the artical.

The problem is that there is an apparent error showing at the end of the completed reference. RED letters - "Check date values in |year=

at the end is a blue "(help)"

when i tap the help it offers "References List" at the top of the box, and inside the box says "Use this group, General references, Use responsive column layout"

This "Help" is totally incomprehensible!

• • • can you help me clear the error that is apparently or potentially can torpedo my reference---I have checked the dates a dozens of times. I own the book, it is right here on my desk!

That blue help link should take you to the appropriate section of Help:CS1 errors (click that link). I presume that you are using the visual editor. I don't (won't ever) use that editor so can't help with that. What is the date that you are attempting to use? Is the date's format one that is accepted by Wikipedia (there is a large table of malformed date examples and how they should be written at the help link).

Too many dates is too many dates. For a book, all you need is |date=2023 or |year=2023; choose one. Another comment: |location= gets the city name and nothing else so rewriting the template:

Best way to verify facts about a fictional character

Proper venue for discussing application of policy within a Wikiproject

I've been asking around on various pages to no avail. Recently there has been an ANI thread and several templates deleted due to a discussion that included how articles should cover active tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons, etc). However, I think that how pages should cover active storms needs to be discussed further. The first suggestion was to take the matter to ArbCom, but it did not seem so serious. Next I suggested holding a discussion on the relevant project talk page (either Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Weather or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tropical cyclones), but others suggested holding it outside of project space to reduce bias and invite more outside opinion. One editor suggested WP:NPOVN but that seemed a poor fit. Following the suggestions of a couple others I did start a thread at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy), but I have gotten no response one way or the other there. Admittedly, that isn't quite the right place either as that page is more about discussing changes to policy. At this point I am not sure where this kind of discussion should be held. How to fix a problem with political party modules I have noticed

I've noticed that for templates such as {{Full party name with color|Janata Dal (United)}} and {{Full party name with color|Janata Dal (Secular)}}, the full name is only shown as Janata Dal. I see why this is important for {{Full party name with color|Labour Party (UK)}} and {{Full party name with color|Labour Party (Australia)}} maybe, but Janata Dal (United) and Janata Dal (Secular) have the same party name when their full names should include the bits in parentheses. A simple solution is to add a flag in the module that indicates whether the full party name should include text in parentheses, and consider that in all political party templates involving the full name. @C1MM: This can already be done with |dab=yes after a discussion at Template talk:Party name with color#Undisambiguated full name. It's currently only documented at {{Party name with color}} but it also works for {{Full party name with color}} which uses the same module. Wikipedia doesn't use email addresses to log on, it uses usernames plus passwords. Hence if you look in the contribution history of the article you say you created, you should find that username. If you can't remember the password, just create a new account and mention on its new userpage that you previously edited with that other account. Note that accounts are for one person only: your use of "we" might be interpreted as if you think it is acceptable to have role-based accounts (e.g. for the PR department). It is not. I wonder whether "We created a page for our company" merely means that Wikipedia has an article about your company and you think it was created by an unknown person at the company. We are an encyclopedia with millions of articles mostly written and maintained by volunteer editors with no affiliation with the subject. I recall I used to get a notification when someone clicked the "reply" link at the end of my comment without explicitly naming me in a {{ping}} or {{reply}} tag. I am running across replies that seem to have been made this way, but for which I never got notified. I don't recall changing anything in my user preferences, and I don't see any setting about this either. I find it weird that they say "all" timestamps when it's definitely not happening on every page... It's also just low enough contrast that it makes my brain tick (and is below WCAG standards!). Moving article from sandbox

I have looked at User:SEQUINS24/sandbox, but to be honest it has zero chance of being accepted as an article at the moment. It could be moved to a WP:DRAFT article but would need a lot of work. @SEQUINS24: Perhaps you didn't see ianmacm reply to your question above, but it wasn't wise of you to move Bruce Ovbiagele to the article namespace at this time because it's not ready for article status. I've draftified the page for you to allow you more time to work on it and improve because leaving where it was would have almost certainly led to the page being either tagged or nominated for WP:DELETION. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:Notability (people), Help:Your first article, Help:Referencing for beginners for some general information on how you might try to improve the draft. You should also talke a look at Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:An article about yourself is not necessarily a good thing because those pages may also contain information that you might find helpful and might apply to your situation. I don't suggest you try to move the page back to the article namespace yourself again because doing so is almost certainly going to led to the page being nominated for deletion (absent any real significant improvements being made). Instead I suggest you submit the draft to Wikipedia:Articles for creation for review when you think it's ready. I want to ask is it ok if an editor is continuosly creating redirects of potential articles? Doesn't it take away the attribution from the editor which was about to start the article? What @Kumarpramit: is doing is just making redirects of badminton tournament articles, just to pose as the first to start the page, while others are doing hardwork of expanding it without their article tally going upwards. I suggest you forget the articlecountitis you appear to be suffering from, and get on with improving the encyclopaedia. Almost nobody cares how many articles you have started and how many you haven't, and unless there is major problem with it, almost nobody goes back and looks at who chanced to create the first version of an article. Clarification Regarding Translation Replacement

Hi there,

I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct place to ask, but maybe someone will be able to assist. I noticed that the article Egor Kreed, for example, was considerably empty in contrast to the one found on the Russian Wikipedia, and was looking to add content to it. However, when I was using the translation tool for other articles, I noticed that there is an option to replace an already existing page with a translation. My question for this is: what would be the potential impact of such an action? Would there need to be additional steps taken afterwards? I think it would be easier to do another translation (given how organized the tool is) but at the same time, I do not want to mess things up if that makes sense. Thanks in advance for the help.
