The Mayor of Mumbai is the first citizen of the Indian city of Mumbai. The person is the chief of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, but his/her role is largely ceremonial as the real powers are vested in the Municipal Commissioner. The Mayor also plays a functional role in deliberating over the discussions in the Corporation. [1]Shraddha Jadhav (belonging to the Shiv Sena political party) is the current Mayor of Mumbai.[2].

[edit] Current Mayor
The current mayor is Mrs. Shraddha Shridhar Jadhav of the Shiv Sena, elected in 2009 with 114 votes against her opponent from the Congress, Priscilla Kadam who got 95 votes.[3] She is the fifth woman Mayor till date. MCGM has a record of giving five woman Mayors to the financial capital of the country, Mumbai. With Smt. Sulochana M. Modi of Congress taking the charge of Mumbai Mayor in 1956–57 followed by Smt. Niramala Samant - Prabhavalkar (Congress) in 1994-95, Mrs. Vishakha Raut (Shiv Sena) in 1997-98 and Dr. (Smt.) Shubha U. Raul (Shiv Sena) in 2007-09.

The designation of 'Chairmen' of Mumbai since 1873 was changed into 'President' of the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai which later changed into that of 'His Worship the Mayor', Mumbai Municipal Corporation from November 1931.
[edit] Election of the Mayor
He/She is elected from within the ranks of the council in a quinquennial election. The elections are conducted in all 227 wards in the city to elect corporators. The party that wins the maximum number of seats holds an internal voting to decide the mayor.
The tenure of the Mayor is two and a half years.
