"I'm Into You"
Song

"I'm Into You" is a song by American recording artist and actress Jennifer Lopez, and the second single from her seventh studio album, Love? (2011). The mid-tempo pop song was written by Taio Cruz, Lil Wayne and Norwegian duo StarGate, who also produced the song. Lil Wayne also has featured vocals on the song, after Lopez identified him as her favorite male rapper. In the song, that features double entendre lyrics, Lopez sings about being lost in love and her lover's attraction, while Wayne teases with clever wordplay. Initial reviews of the song have been positive, noting the song's catchy hook, Island-flavored production and fun lyrics.

The song was released in many countries on April 1, 2011. It was originally due for release in the US and Canada on April 5, 2011, but the song was unlocked and released in those markets on April 1, 2011, through a campaign on Lopez's Facebook page. A music video for "I'm Into You" began production in Chichen Itza, Mexico on April 2, 2011. It was released on May 2, 2011 at Today and the video depicts the singer on a beach with her love interest and also shows scenes where she dances with two back-up singers as well as featuring the singer on a Mayan pyramid. The song has charted on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and has reached the top-ten on the UK Singles Chart.[1][2]

Background

On March 30, 2011, Lopez appeared on Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest. There, she spoke about the upcoming release of her seventh studio album, Love?, and her American Idol experiences. She also introduced a thirty-second preview of her new single, "I'm Into You".[3][4] Later that same day, a version of the song leaked online to Rap-Up magazine's website and the blogosphere.[5][6] The song was used in a promotional campaign in the US and Canada on Lopez's official Facebook page. If enough fans "liked" the song, it would be unlocked for early purchase on the iTunes Store.[7][dead link] On April 1, the song was released to iTunes, four days earlier than planned in those markets.[8][dead link]

Composition

"I'm Into You" is a mid-tempo Island-flavored pop song featuring American rapper Lil Wayne, written by Lil Wayne and Taio Cruz and co-written by Norwegian duo StarGate.[5][9] Lopez told fans that she chose Wayne for the song because he is her current favorite male MC. "To me just the things he says and the way he says it is very unique, and I feel like he has a fresh new voice... He might be one of the best out there right now. He might be the best."[10] It is built around a "trippy" and "synth-heavy beat" and "beachy feel" with a "club-ready refrain," according to Mary Kinney from AOL Music. Kinney commented about Lil Wayne's verses, describing lines like "I'm falling for you, baby / I need a parachute" as clever wordplay.[6][11] According to Rap-Up, on the song, Lopez "finds herself lost in love" and her lover's attraction.[5][6]

Critical reception

Mary Kinney from AOL Music praised the song's "unstoppable production" courtesy of Norwegian producers, StarGate, saying that "The hook of Lopez repeating "I'm into you" will be ringing in listeners' ears long after the song is over, and Lil Wayne provides clever wordplay... The club-ready refrain challenges the listener to not sing along. This song is bound for greatness."[11] Bradley Wete from Entertainment Weekly agreed, further commenting that "J-Lo [is] at her perfect pitch. Her notoriously thin voice never strains–which is great for critical ears. She sounds good, not great. But help from the song’s writer Taio Cruz and production from hit-making team StarGate certainly doesn’t hurt either."[3] Robbie Daw, of Idolator, said "although the beat is sparse and the lyrics are borderline simplistic, the melodies (particularly the irresistible chorus) and Jennifer’s warm vocals give this uplifting piece of pop an extra boost."[12] Bill Lamb from About.com rated it four-stars out of five and went to say that: "From the sound of this single it looks like Jennifer Lopez is planning to extend her pop comeback a bit longer. It boasts an instantly catchy hook courtesy Taio Cruz and Stargate. Lil Wayne stops in for a clean, pop friendly rap, and, with a charming slinkiness to the production, the overall impact is good, clean, dancefloor fun. This will please Jennifer Lopez fans.", Lamb conclued.[13] Robert Copsey from Digital Spy says, "...Jen is wasting no time on a follow-up [to 'On the Floor']. This second release from her forthcoming album Love? might not have the same impact as her current effort, but we reckon this tropical/latino mashup could be her 'What's My Name?'."[14] While reviewing the album Love?, Sal Cinquemani from Slant Magazine praised the song, calling it "a summer-hit-in-the-making with a sexy island vibe and the kind of "na-na-na" hook Rihanna has built an entire career around."[15]

Chart perfomance

The song debuted on the UK Singles Chart in the week of May 14, 2011 at number forty, solely due to a high number of digital downloads, after the album was released. The week of June 11, the single peaked at number ten, becoming her fifteenth top-ten single.[2] The week of May 21, the song debuted in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 at number seventy-two, also due to digital downloads, after the album and the music video release.[1]It dropped out from the charts after only two weeks, but has since re-entered the Hot 100 in the week of June 11 at 96 and placed at 88 the following week.[1] Moreover, the song has reached the top-forty in several countries along Europe as Spain, France, Belgium, Norway or Italy.

Music video

Lopez is seen on the steps of a Mayan pyramid, dressed in a snakeskin outfit.

On April 2, 2011, Lopez flew to Chichen Itza in Mexico to film the music video with music video director Melina Matsoukas. In one scene, Lopez is sat on the steps of a Mayan pyramid, dressed in a snakeskin outfit with a headwrap, matching bangles, and platform wedge heels.[16] Lopez shared multiple photos, from the video shoot, with her fans through social networking website, Twitter.[17] According to US Weekly, Lopez filmed scenes at "different locations around a Mayan archaeological site."[18] Someone present on the shoot told the magazine that Lopez's video was based on an old Mayan tale. "There is an old Mayan tale about a snake slithering around the pyramids, so Jennifer donned a snake skin flowing dress and slithered around the ruins."[18] One of the scenes was shot at night, where the ancient columns were lit for Lopez to dance around.[18] In the middle of the music video, it switches to a dance-breakdown accompanied by the song Papi from Lopez' current album.[19] Telenovela star and model William Levy was casted as Jennifer Lopez's love interest.[20] Lopez explained to Extra how she found the hot Cuban actor. "I called my cousins and I said 'Who's the hottest guy right now?' and they're like William Levy! And I was like, 'Okay, let's get William Levy!"[21] Additional scenes were shot on April 21, 2011 with Lil Wayne.[22] The video aired on NBC's Today on May 2, 2011.[20] Although Lil Wayne was pictured filming scenes with Lopez, on green-screen, in Los Angeles, he does not appear in the version of the video premiered on Today.[23][24] A version featuring the rapper was uploaded to Lopez's official Vevo on May 9, 2011.[25] It is nearly identical to the first version, but features additional scenes where Lil Wayne appears alone against a dimily let yellow backdrop.[26]

Synopsis

The Melina Matsoukas-directed clip begins with the entertainer looking radiant as she frolics on the beach with her telenovela male co-star William Levy. Wearing a bejeweled dress, J. Lo sings alongside her co-star in a flash of color and black-and-white shots. The clip features the seductive singer atop the historical steps of the Chichen Itza.[27] Along with the song's midtempo beat, "I'm Into You" also features an unexpected dance breakdown, where Lopez bursts into some swift choreography to a clip of her Love? cut "Papi." Another version of the video was later released, intercut with scenes featuring Lil' Wayne.[27] J. Lo is seen flaunting her body around what looks like ancient Mayan ruins.[28]

Reception

Robert Copsey from Digital Spy gave an extremely positive review for the video, enjoying the beach part, which according to him, is "reminiscent of her 'Love Don't Cost a Thing' video" and praising the dance breakdown, which included, according to him, "a wonderfully choreographed breakdown moment", featuring new album track 'Papi'.[29] Dennis Pastorizo of the website Terra USA was impressed with the video, saying that "Jennifer Lopez looks smokin' hot-heck-I dare to say, better than ever in the video."[30] Ann Lee from the UK website Metro said that: "watching Jennifer Lopez's video for I'm Into You is like going on a summer holiday." She also thought that "Lopez tries her best to be as sexy as possible."[31] Becky Bain of Idolator was also positive, saying that: "it’s the perfect vid to welcome the Summer season."[32] Eliot Glazer from MTV Buzzworthy positively said that: "Ms. Lopez still looks just as good! It's like she's aging in reverse."[28]
