Recent changes

• You can now use datasets on Commons. You can see an example that is using this source. [1]
• There is a new opt-in beta feature of a wikitext mode for the visual editor. You can try it out.
• When you update a page with translations on wikis with the Translate extension the existing translations will be marked as outdated instead of removed. [2]
• The new version of MediaWiki was released to all wikis last week (calendar).
• MoodBar has been removed from the Wikimedia wikis. [3]
• The live option for the Tipsy notice tool has been removed. Gadgets and user scripts which use it need to be updated. [4]

Problems

• Editors who use Firefox 50 might get logged out or fail to save their edits. This is because of a browser bug. Until this is fixed you can enter about:config in the address bar and set network.cookie.maxPerHost to 5000. Firefox 50 is the current version of the Firefox. [5]

First of all I would like to say that the article is better for our interaction, which is all-important. Secondly, resolving problems like giving the wrong impression, or implementing NPOV invariably require another pair of eyes, which is why I put the article up for review. Such problems are hard to spot because I know what I meant when I wrote it. On the other hand, I sometimes employ the full force of the English language to address issues without noting them explicitly or to skate over controversial points by being ambiguous. Your suggestion to add the suicide note was most welcome, but I suspect is what you were referring to by "already moved beyond GA criteria". Jean Tatlock is as good as I could get it but I don't think it will ever proceed any further. I often submit articles which have been written as featured articles (although they may be unlikely to get there due to the restrictions at FAC) and reviewers often get carried away and start reviewing as it it were a FAC. Thank you for a more detailed explanation. I completely agree with your approach, i.e. with the benefits of a second opinion. Here is what I meant by "already moved beyond GA criteria". I believe that a reviewer should not try to impose her/his style beyond GA criteria. So, when I see an issue, I'm often tempted to fix it in a particular way that is congruent with my style. However, I remind myself that my approach is no panacea, and the article's editor(s) can do the fixing in a way they are most comfortable with. In essence, by writing this phrase I was stopping myself from being too prescriptive. BTW I would apply this same logic to FA criteria. I think that there are infinitely many ways to write a featured article which will (a) satisfy all the criteria (b) will be enjoyed by the readers (c) will make the editor(s) and wiki-community proud. So, from my standpoint, a good GA/FA reviewer knows how to separate what objectively needs to be done from what he/she would do to achieve that. 凰兰时罗 (talk) 05:24, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Thx for the bot, it's very helpful. See WT:TFA#Recently featured again (not the part about Jan 4, the rest of it). I initially thought this wouldn't be an issue because it would be infrequent and I could fix it by hand ... and I can, but it's happening more often than I remembered that part of a title is italicized and part isn't, and I keep forgetting to do it. • video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [7]

Changes this week

• There is a new magic word called {{PAGELANGUAGE}}. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [8]
• When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [9]
• You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas. Before you could use <ce>. <ce> should be replaced by <chem>. [10]
• You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [11]
• The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS: #wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; } You can change the number 50 to make it look like you want to. [12]
• Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [13]
• When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [14]

Mary Jackson

Hi! I saw your edit to Mary Jackson (engineer), and was just curious what your change accomplished. The edit summary says "rm annoying error messages," but I wasn't seeing errors on the previous version. I looked at the documentation of {{citation}} and still have no idea what ref=none does. GorillaWarfare (talk) 07:10, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

The error messages I got looked like warning: There is no link pointing to this citation. The anchor is named CITEREFCzarneckiJackson1958. By default the {{citation}} template creates an anchor equivalent to that created by ref=harv when you are using {{cite journal}} or {{cite book}}. But with them ref=none (ie do not create an anchor) is the default. The anchors are normally used with references; the {{harvnb}} and {{sfn}} templates create nice links to them. So that when you click on the link in an inline reference, it takes you down to the book in the references section and highlights the book. You don't need them in a list of publications, because there are no inline references to them. (Note that I didn't add one to the journal citation, because it didn't need it.) The ref=none form is in the documentation of {{citation}}: see Template:Citation#Anchored citations.

As to why I can see the error message and you can't, the reason is that I seem to have a Javascript that runs a JQuery to spot these errors called User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js It's been in User:Hawkeye7/common.js since 13 November 2011; I guess I had forgotten all about it. It normally warns me that a reference is wrong. I should have marked the change as "minor", since it is invisible to the readers. My apologies for that.

Herb Chen

Hey H., Noting your interest in physics biographies, I wonder if you might have a quick look at some point at the article I have been working on the past month: Herbert H. Chen. There are still some missing pieces (I have an inquiry in on Chen's dissertation title), but mostly I am sometimes foggy on some of the technicalities of Wikipedia articles. The Chen article is a little challenging - I knew him and by all accounts he was a brilliant and accomplished physicist; but he was struck down by leukemia at age 45 - hence did not become as notable as he might have. • ElectronPdfService will be enabled by default on Meta and German Wikipedia. This is a new way to get articles as PDF files you can download. It will come to more wikis later. [17]

The image is definitely in the PD. Copyright expired in Sweden, therefore also in the US. But I went through this with James Chadwick. In that case, another (but slightly different) photograph of Chadwick was taken at the same session, but it was published in the UK, and therefore was not in the PD. We had a debate on Commons and the image was kept. Then one of their cowboy admins just deleted it anyway. So the rule is: don't move images to Commons if don't have to. If we do have to, we can substitute the OTRS image (the one in the Physics section) that everyone else uses, but I'd rather not.

It's two other images that are problematic; the one of the CalTech bookstore and the Feynman Lectures on Physics. They are on Commons, so all we can do is remove them from the article. Hawkeye7 (talk) 20:56, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

I read an article on the web that said this is the most viewed article on wiki, or at least most viewed bio. It's also a Top level article at WP:Plants. I was wondering what you think it'd take to get it to FA. Or as an alternative, who you'd think would be good to take a quick look at it. And congrats on getting Feynman to FA! Problems

• The block log sometimes showed blocks as being much longer than they were. This has now been fixed. [20]

Changes this week

• Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before and after. [21]
• There are some changes to the OOjs UI. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change. [22]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar).

Meetings

• You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 7 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• Tidy will be replaced later this year. Instead, the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This will cause problems on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first. You can see if your wiki still has something to fix here for one of the HTML problems. This list does not cover all problems. You can read about more problems. [23][24]

Recent changes

• EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. [25]

Problems

• The Firefox add-on Firefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg. [26]
• Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this. [27]

Changes this week

• The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It will come to Meta and German Wikipedia this week. It is already available on MediaWiki.org. It will come to more wikis later. [28]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 February. It will be on all wikis from 16 February (calendar).

Future changes

• Page Previews will be turned on for logged-out users on the Catalan, Greek, Russian, and Italian Wikipedias in the middle of February. Page Previews shows readers a short part of a linked article when they rest their mouse pointer on the link. This is to help them understand what it is about without leaving the article they are reading. Page Previews used to be called Hovercards. It will come to more wikis later this spring. [29]
• The Developer Wishlist is a list where developers prioritize tools they need. The voting closes at 14 February 23:59 (UTC). This process is only for developers.
