Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

Zheng Pingru

Hi Megalibrarygirl, thanks for creating Zheng Pingru! I had been planning to write the article for years, but never got around to do it. I've expanded the article a bit and nominated it for DYK. Please feel free to propose alt hooks or add your comments. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 23:15, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cool! She was very interesting, Zanhe! I really like what you did with the article. It looks so much better now! :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 23:35, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I found a source that discusses the disability NGO sector and their advocacy. http://www.osisa.org/law/zambia/dealing-disability

I unfortunately don't have much free time over the next few days to deal with it, so if you're interested please go ahead. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 06:25, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Dodger67: Thanks for the info! I'll add it. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:24, 16 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Article Rescue thank you

Thank you for agreeing to help work on my draft of Susan Mikula. I have been doing work on unsourced BLPs recently so it is good to see someone at least try to rescue one of my drafts. JC7V7DC5768 (talk) 04:16, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost

Greetings! I saw your offer to help out with the Signpost. Did you say and mean that you would help out with the 'Gallery' article? If so, I can set an article template up for you and you can find the images you think should be highlighted. I have been doing it and it seems like fun to me. And if you only want to do it once or a few times, that still is a good thing. Best Regards, Barbara   19:14, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Barbara (WVS): no, I just mean that if people need pictures for their articles, I don't mind hunting them up. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 20:24, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Barbara (WVS): how many do you need? Is this Professional Wrestling from the modern era? Thanks! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:43, 21 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

article request - Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art

Hi Megalibrarygirl! would you be able to get me a copy of "The Founding and Design of "William Merritt Chase’s Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art and the Art Village" by Cynthia V. A. Schaffner and Lori Zabar in the Winterthur Portfolio, Volume 44, Number 4 | Winter 2010? No rush, I would like to use it as a reference for a short wiki article. Thanks for checking. I dumped some names over the the Women of marginalized populations page. I don't know if they will work out as notable and I haven't put references there yet. Please delete the names if I either shouldn't have done that or you want to review them first. It was just a thought. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 11:54, 24 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Antiqueight I am so glad you did that! It's been hard for me to find names, to be honest. I appreciate your help so much!!!! :D Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:52, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome - if I get a chance and any thoughts I'll look for more. Not certain of the notability of all of them. Basically with this group I just looked for women working for travellers and from them. If I think of other groups I'll try get more names. ☕ Antiqueight chatter 17:07, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for cleaning up the Susan Mikula draft. Even if its not accepted you did a good job. JC7V7DC5768 (talk) 18:34, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's still pending, JC7V7DC5768? I'm surprised. I was going to move it into article space, but I saw it was waiting for approval, so I didn't want to step on any toes. I think she's notable. Megalibrarygirl (talk) 19:36, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Woman in Blue

Nieca Goldberg is up for deletion. If your opinion is 'keep,' you might want to state that at the AfD discussion. My own opinion, stated there, is that she is noteworthy for actions in women's health, versus science journal publishing. I have been removing parts of the article in attempt to leave behind a supportable core of statements and citations. David notMD (talk) 22:52, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@David notMD: I just started working on improving the references. I'm glad you're working on improving the article, too. I usually like to fix the issues and then !vote one way or the other. Working on the article gives me a good sense of what's going on. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:05, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The original editor created this back in 2017 - and a few other articles about New York people. Denied COI or PAID. Has not done any editing on anything since April 2018. I got involved because the person who in the end initiated the AfD was very cranky complaining at TeaHouse about how he was an academic cardiologist, and by cardiologists, Goldberg was nothing special. David notMD (talk) 00:50, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

wikidata edit

Hi. I hope you are well.
On the left side of wikipedia window, I have section "wikidata edit". Do you know how to get rid of it? I dont remember why, but I am certain this is connected to you somehow lol. I looked at the usual suspects like common.js, and common.css but all the entries are familiar there and nothing related to wikidata edit. —usernamekiran(talk) 07:56, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Usernamekiran: I have a Wikidata Edit as well. It's useful for adding Wikipedia items to Wikidata (though sometimes it doesn't work properly for me on some of the computers I use). I don't remember what I used to add it to my toolbar... I remember adding it, but I can't find it in my common.js or common.css either. It may be good to post this query on Women in Red because a lot of people involved in Wikidata will see your question and can help out. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:11, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to have appeared around the time the links to the WEF tool disappeared from the main article pages. I must say I much preferred the old system. It's not so easy to edit Wikidata info from the article edit pages. Does anyone have any idea how we can explore this and perhaps suggest improvements.--Ipigott (talk) 09:07, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Even though I am not sure how did i add it, I am pretty sure I did it by myself; and also that MLG is somehow connected to this. Its strange though, how we cant find a way to remove these options. —usernamekiran(talk) 07:17, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Usernamekiran: I'm sorry if I've caused any trouble for you! :( Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:48, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
lol, not at all. It is just, somehow I remember it was connected to you; so I thought you might know how to remove it or how you added it. You dont need to apologise usernamekiran(talk) 18:25, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ipigott: found it. it is from meta. —usernamekiran(talk) 20:57, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Usernamekiran: As I suspected, you must once have installed the Wikidata tool so that you could make Wikidata entries while viewing a Wikipedia article. The code you installed is explained here. I've been using it frequently for quite some time but the WEF sidebar entries did not appear in article edit mode until recently. As I mentioned above, I agree that this is a backward step but there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it. If Megalibrarygirl told you about it, it was probably my fault. A few of us on Women in Red have been using the tool (or "the gadget" as it is sometimes known) on the English wiki so that we can immediately provide essential details on Wikidata of the women we cover in our biographies, especially when creating articles on those who have not been covered in other language versions of Wikipedia. I'm sorry the tool proved to be such a bother but am glad to see you were able to delete it. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 08:31, 6 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are awesome!

The Detective Barnstar
Creating content about women, even really famous women, requires extraordinary dedication and skills. Thank you for making a road trip to verify copyright data. You go above and beyond and that is what makes you awesome. SusunW (talk) 15:14, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello Megalibrarygirl, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings. Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 00:00, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Happy holidays

Call a spade a spade

What's this? I pop over here wondering if you can spice up Andra Samoa so it doesn't get deleted, only to find you've taken a week off. This is an unacceptable level of service; when I was on holiday last week, I managed to file an RfA while sitting on Worbarrow Bay and finished off a GA review while playing chess with my kids. (And they say men can't multi task!) I expect a full written report on my desk first thing Monday morning. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 14:13, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

and who will look after kitties while you are away mmmmmmmmhhhhhhh?:)) Coolabahapple (talk) 15:28, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ritchie333 She's working. She's off traveling to get a book for the Wilma Mankiller article we are working up to GA :) SusunW (talk) 16:25, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritchie333, SusunW, and Coolabahapple: thanks for the vacation wishes! Today is my slow day on vacation, so maybe I'll look into some Wiki stuff. (Can't stay away too long! I loves it!) But you should all know that I have been duly suffering 94 degree Florida humidity in EPCOT (Every Person Comes Out Tired), the beach (where I got slightly burned) and Universal Studios (where I was soaked on many of the rides and came out of the place with significantly less funds than I went in!) See you all later today (If I can get away from the pool.) ;) (PS, I have hired teh cat sitter.) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:45, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well in my humble opinion one of the best family days out you can have over this side of the pond if you're a Wikipedian is a trip to Longleat. Kids can feed giraffes, get lost in the maze and go on some rides. Grown-ups can explore the treasures inside the house, see the straightjacket that Charles I wore before he went on a dramatic weight loss programme, and discover the delightful eccentricity, dress-sense and "wifelets" of Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath. For the Women in Red crowd, there's an eight-foot portrait of Emma Thynn, Viscountess Weymouth which screams out "I'm the boss, now!" along with her extensive cookery exhibition. How many family trips do you come away from thinking, "I should really expand one of the articles on that?" Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:29, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ritchie333 that sounds awesome! For reals, down here in Florida we had an actual heatstroke scare (my stepmom was severely dehydrated) and I have no interest in improving any of the articles on Disney, Universal, etc. On the other hand, I did get to have Butterbeer and pumpkin juice at Hogsmeade in Universal Studios. So... on the balance? :P All the same, I'm glad to be with family and we're all drinking lots of water now! Megalibrarygirl (talk) 17:34, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's been baking hot here too; temperatures reaching the 30s (that's 90s in Fahrenheit), although everyone who's old enough to remember the summer of '76 thinks it's not as bad. Over the holiday my eldest son managed to beat me at chess, which suggests either he's pretty good, I'm rubbish or (most likely) both. I've not tried pumpkin juice, but I did get Sarah Frey's article to DYK some time back; she makes it on an industrial scale, apparently. If I ever go to Florida I want to roadtrip the Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West and back again. Oh, and pass whatever resort Trump stays at and stick two fingers up at him as I go past. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:41, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if we are making vacation recommendations, I suggest skipping Cancun and coming to Merida instead. Cancun is a tourist-filled spot, not resembling Mexico in any way. I would also suggest bypassing Chichen Itza, (yes I get that it is a world-heritage-site, but also it is a tourist mecca) opting instead for Uxmal or Palenque, where you can actually enjoy your learning experience without hawkers or jostling from the masses. While there are lovely beaches throughout the world, cenotes are pretty unique and amazingly different, depending on whether they are fully open, partially open, or fully enclosed. As for heat, same here as in Florida for you right now, Sue. Not remotely baking, I hate cold, but always drink lots and lots of water, lime juice, chaya smoothies (ch-eye-uh) or jamaica (hum-eye-ka) and have learned to always walk on the shady side of the road. We also have Sikil Pak, a roasted pumpkin seed and charred tomato/onion dip that puts hummus to shame. Far better than drinking juice ;) SusunW (talk) 18:48, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
SusunW your area sounds lovely and delicious! I am in tourist central right now, but it's a family vacation where we all get together and everyone voted Disney, etc. Ritchie333 once they start winning at chess, it's all over. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 20:08, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"I must go down to the sea again // to the lonely sea and the sky // I left my shoes and socks there // I wonder if they're dry?" [1] I do admit I thought of Megalibrarygirl while making this edit, except substituting "guitar player" and "bass player" for "librarian" and "Wikipedian" respectively. DYK for Zheng Pingru

On 12 August 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Zheng Pingru, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Chinese spy Zheng Pingru (pictured), who was executed after an assassination attempt on a Japanese collaborator, is believed to have inspired the novella Lust, Caution, and its film adaptation? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Zheng Pingru. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Zheng Pingru), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
