    Talk Page content removal

    Being discussed in another forum

Important: this is, apparently, a very fundamental, complex and unresolved issue, so don't rush with an answer.

Related to a dispute of mine with another editor, DRN moderator User:Robert McClenon said here:

"but the real question appears to be that (USERNAME) removed 26 Kilobytes of material from the talk page that was inserted by an unregistered editor who was probably User:Z80Spectrum. I have read the Talk Page Guidelines and advise the other editors to read them. Maybe (USERNAME) interprets the Talk Page Guidelines differently than I do. They are not clearly written. However, it is my opinion that the removal of material posted by another editor to an article talk page is only allowed under unusual circumstances, and those circumstances were not present."

Then DRN moderator User:Robert McClenon said here

"The author who is doing the removing cites WP:FORUM, WP:NOTHOWTO, and WP:OR. I read the talk page guidelines, and they are clear that removing material from a talk page should not normally be done, but occasionally should be done, but they provide poor guidance for gray area cases."

This same essential situation then repeats over and over again in multiple discussions, with the vast majority of Wikipedia editors applying various Wikipedia policies to talk page content, where those same policies explicitly or implicitly say that they are about article content.

My approach to this is an approach of fundamental interpretation: talk page content shouldn't be easily removed, because Wikipedia fundamentally depends on talk page discussions to resolve disputes. If talk page content is allowed to be easily removed, then issues which are in the gray area cannot be discussed, because they get removed before they can be discussed, which is an undesirable and potentially dangerous situation. I agree with User:Robert McClenon that talk page content removal should be warranted only under unusual circumstances or under obvious and serious policy violations, and specifically not under contestable allegations of policy violations.

However, most Wikipedia editors apparently act as if removal of talk page content is a simple, definite and non-contestable issue. They are all allowing talk page content removal as if it was a non-issue, and they are citing numerous article-related Wikipedia policies as a rationale.

This lack of clarity in WP:TPG is creating a huge mess.

    What should I do now? Z80Spectrum (talk) 03:07, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

One point of clarity (not having looked into this specific case): removing content from other people's talk pages is generally discouraged (with exceptions, etc., etc.). LittlePuppers (talk) 03:52, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I generally agree with you, but I strongly disagree with this:

However, most Wikipedia editors apparently act as if removal of talk page content is a simple, definite and non-contestable issue.

If more than one editor is doing that at a particular page, it would be very unusual. I'll go have a look. Mathglot (talk) 03:57, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Z80Spectrum - What you should do now is to joint in the discussion at the Talk Page Guidelines talk page. I raised that issue a little more than a day ago. At this point the discussion there is again illustrating the lack of clarity of the guidelines. I think that the Talk Page Guidelines talk page is probably the right forum to discuss the issue. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A question that I have raised that I don't think has been answered is where should the deletion of talk page material be discussed. Controversial edits to articles are discussed at article talk pages. Where are controversial edits to talk pages discussed? Robert McClenon (talk) 03:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The removal of 26kb of comments was inappropriate. That said, the addition of so much information to the page may have also been inappropriate, and imho should have been, if anything, collapsed and not removed. I can see a possible argument for removal, but not on the whim of a single editor; that would have required a separate discussion and consensus. However, Robert is correct both in the lack of clarity and in the venue. Please follow this up at WT:Talk page guidelines#Removing Material from Article Talk Pages, where it is already under discussion. Mathglot (talk) 04:42, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This issue has now been forum shopped to the article talk page, DRN, ANI, Teahouse, and here. While I agree the removal of the very extended content was unusual, I think there's been a reluctance by any of the half-dozen or so editors who have been involved since the removal to restore most of the material because it's so obviously not useful to the project - restoring for the sake of restoring isn't helpful per WP:NOTBUREAU. Z80Spectrum, I feel like the effort you've expended getting this material restored to this specific location as opposed to your user space or a notepad on your desktop is effort that would be better spent doing nearly anything else. Elizabeth Ramsey content needs to be corrected

To whom it may concern: As one of the daughters of Ms. Elizabeth Ramsey. I would like for the editor to correct the description narrative of Elizabeth Ramsey when it comes to her marriage and children. I logged in to make the changes but it's not saving it. The information are wrong and it needs to be corrected. Please help me to make it happen. Thank you Indaysusan12 (talk) 07:18, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please review how to make an edit request; you may do so on the article talk page(Talk:Elizabeth Ramsey) and detail changes you feel are needed, preferably sourced to independent reliable sources. You should not edit the article directly as you have a conflict of interest.331dot (talk) 08:46, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Another question

For alphabetical context, we should use in or of? I am intent to make change to some articles about letters to keep consistent, but I'm not sure what's going on without consensus. What's your opinion about changing the requested in
[The uppercase letter], or [the lowercase letter], is the [numeral] letter in/of the Latin alphabet, used in the modern English alphabet.? 2001:EE0:4BC7:E310:B50C:773B:1A40:16BA (talk) 11:32, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Here, I would use of, since there's nothing to an alphabet (for our purposes) other than that it is a collection of letters. In is more often used when the larger thing has some sense of greater scope or ownership over the member, like a road in a country. Remsense 11:39, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let's count it. In:18, of:8. Clearly to see there is a majority of articles prefer in. Any thought? 2001:EE0:4BC7:E310:B50C:773B:1A40:16BA (talk) 11:52, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer of in this case, but it seems like both ways are accepted, so MOS:STYLEVAR may apply. Perception312 (talk) 16:08, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose in simply reads less naturally to me, and with such issues there isn't really a notion of 'explicit consensus'. But this is an abstract thing. I'm just one person with one opinion, though I've got some reasoning for it. Remsense 19:02, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! The Help desk can point users to sections of the Wikipedia:Manual of Style when appropriate, but it isn't the place to form a consensus for a series of articles. Sometimes WikiProjects choose to do this. Talk:A contains {{WikiProject Writing systems}}, so you might want to ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Writing systems. How to check what external links are being referenced in an article

Hi. We are able to check what articles link to a certain page from WP:WLH. Is there a way to check what pages are being link to from an article? More specifically can we check what external URLs are being referenced in an article?

Fernand Lopez recently has a user adding all these external links to it where they don't belong. I want to see if theres a way to check if I missed any external links that need to be replaced with a proper citation. - Imcdc Contact 12:30, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Imcdc: An external link search is possible with mw:API:Extlinks like [1] but it includes links made by citation templates so it's not very useful for you. For your purpose you can make a browser search for [http in the source text. It's Ctrl+f in Windows browsers. By the way, I have User:PrimeHunter/Where links this.js to show outgoing wikilinks but I haven't made a version for external links. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:49, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok got it. I'm surprised there isn't anything made for external URLs yet. It would be useful for cleanups - Imcdc Contact 12:55, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Imcdc: I have now made User:PrimeHunter/External links.js but it includes template-generated links like citation templates so it's not for cleanup. {{Cleanup bare URLs}} can be placed on articles needing cleanup. It includes tool links. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:09, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Source editing

    What's gong on? No more source editing? - Joaquin89uy (talk) 14:56, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Joaquin89uy I still have an "edit source" tab on all articles and pages like the Help Desk and they still work (on a PC with Windows 11 and edge browser). Can you give more details on your set-up: device, browser etc. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:05, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull Ok, at least now I know it's not everyone, nor is it a new feature of the page or something.
I'm using a new computer I got, which uses ubuntu, and as for its browser i'm using google chrome. Joaquin89uy (talk) 15:18, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Try the key combination alt-shift-e, which is the keyboard combination for invoking the source editor. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:24, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Try going to Preferences > Editing and selecting one of the following editing modes: "Show me both editor tabs" or "Always give me the source editor". Perception312 (talk) 15:45, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull @Perception312 The "Alt-shift-e" thing didn't really help, 'cause it would just take me straight into visual editing mode and nothing else. The preferences page option did help me, but not exactly as Perception put it, 'cause the options he mentioned don't appear to exist.
What I did instead is disable the "show visual editor" box there, just to see what would happen, as it was the only thing that kinda related to my problem, and now the "edit" option on any article I enter takes me straight to "source edit" mode. That isnt a problem since I don't ever use the "visual" editor anyways.
I thought I'd describe what helped me in detail just in case it happens to some other person down the line. Sorry it took so long for me to reply. Thank u both, a lot. - Joaquin89uy (talk) 19:44, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joaquin89uy: Hi there! Taking four hours to reply is fine - no apologies needed. When you go to Preferences > Editing and look at the "Editing mode:" drop down, what options do you see? GoingBatty (talk) 22:24, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: For starters, and to be precise, I dont have any subsection named "Editing mode". I have one called "Editor". Do you have one literally called "editing mode"? Or were you going by memory?
    Now I'm curious, lol. - Joaquin89uy (talk) 03:24, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Joaquin89uy: Here's a screenshot of what I see. I'm using the Vector (2022) skin, in case that makes a difference. GoingBatty (talk) 03:43, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joaquin89uy: What is the exact URL of the Preferences page you're visiting? I just noticed that the Commons Preference page has different options than the English Wikipedia Preferences page. GoingBatty (talk) 03:48, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: That last section doesn't exist in my preferences page.
    The url is
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing - Joaquin89uy (talk) 04:20, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: Ok, now I got it.
The problem was the first option was unchecked in mine.
The one about "Prompting when editing a blank edit summary (or the default undo summary)". That one enables the "editing mode" subsection to appear or not to appear. Don't know why, though. - Joaquin89uy (talk) 04:30, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's "Enable the visual editor" which (after saving preferences) controls whether "Editing mode" is shown. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:12, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter You seem to be right.... Still, what I remember having at the beginning of this all, was, the "enable visual editor" box checked, the first one unchecked, and no "editing mode" subsection available to me. Still, I might be wrong about that. Unfortunately I didnt take a screenshot of it then. - Joaquin89uy (talk) 11:56, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The infobox image currently looks fine to me but File:Zuru logo.jpg was recently overwritten by a version with other dimensions. Sometimes there is a delay in updating something after that. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:51, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MinecraftPlayer321, also note that we generally discourage citing press releases, such as PR Newswire, and it would be ideal to replace those references with better sources, if available. LittlePuppers (talk) 19:13, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LittlePuppers Thanks for your advice. I could not find any other sources, so I will add the Template: Better source needed. Thanks! ⚒️★MinecraftPlayer★321⚒️ Let's Chat! 19:17, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Articles with hatnote templates targeting a nonexistent page

Hello! Category:Articles with hatnote templates targeting a nonexistent page has categories titled Category:Parents of prime ministers of Great Britain and Category:Syndromes with obesity that have no apparent problems. In the listed categories, it doesn't say that either one is in Category:Articles with hatnote templates targeting a nonexistent page. 8UB3RG1N3 (talk) 21:53, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@8UB3RG1N3: Fixed by null edits to Category:Parents of prime ministers of Great Britain and Category:Syndromes with obesity. They did have the reported problem (except not being articles) when they were last edited and would have displayed the parent category at the time. If a page is not edited but changes categories for other reasons then the categories may change on the page display without the category pages being updated. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:43, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you! 8UB3RG1N3 (talk) 22:51, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is newspapers.com free subscriptions still available to editors?

This may be the wrong place to ask, for I've never used Help Desk before. For several years I was able to use newspapers.com without charge by applying through the Wikipedia Library. My subscription has apparently run out, and when I attempted to apply for another one year subscription through the Wiki Library I was unable to do so. Perhaps I'm just forgetting how to find an online application, but I'm wondering if newspapers.com stopped participating in granting free subscriptions to Wikipedia editors who make a certain number of edits a month. I'm feeling foolish for asking, but I'm stomped on how to figure out the application process. Karenthewriter (talk) 22:04, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to remove suggested edit summary in the visual editor

I frequently use the edit summary "removed unnecessary comma." However, today, I accidently hit backspace and entered "removed unnecessary comm" instead. Now, every time I edit a page with the visual editor in the future, that spelling is going to show up above the correct one in the list of suggestions. Is there any way to remove it from the list so I can easily use my desired edit summary again? LitanyOfBoredom (talk) 05:49, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That information is stored in your Wikipedia cookies, so just edit or delete those. (How to do that depends on your browser.) It's good practice to delete all your cookies from time to time. You'll simply need to log in to your favourite websites again. Shantavira|feed me 09:15, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LitanyOfBoredom: It's not a Wikipedia cookie but a standard autocomplete feature for form data in your browser. I don't know whether any browser has an interface option to remove individual suggestions from a site without removing all of them. You can try asking at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing. Give your browser with version number and your operating system. The data is stored in a file on your device so maybe it can be edited manually. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:49, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: not necessarily. there is an edit summary autocomplete for the 2017 editor. ltbdl (talk) 11:04, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

20 upper is right, but hasn't given you helpful information. You'll need to create a new account, but you may edit the User pages of both the new account and the old one to explain that they're used by the same person, with the old one being inaccessible. Edit Protect a wikipedia page

How do I protect a important person's page from getting edited by anyone? Bisharakhuri1 (talk) 16:47, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You don't. Articles are not protected merely to keep people from editing them. They are only protected for specific reasons, like preventing extensive vandalism or ending disruption. If an article is being extensively vandalized, protection may be requested at WP:RFPP.
I'm wondering if you represent this important person? 331dot (talk) 16:52, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That article really needs some good editing. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:04, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. @Cremastra: Others are already responding there, but you should not tell people "Under our conflict-of-interest policies, you shouldn't be editing articles about yourself." @Lordhurst: The discussion which led to its deletion can be found at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ben Gurion Canal Project. Pages deleted via a discussion at Articles for Deletion may not be recreated in a similar form to their version prior to deletion, so simply reinstating the page is not possible, but based on the discussion it appears you may be able to contact the deleting administrator if you'd like to work on merging some of its content to List of interoceanic canals. For eg can I use Archie Hamilton picture in his wiki page. Theoverseer1 (talk) 03:28, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All images (well, read most) are copyrighted. You can't just use any image you find. We require one of two things. Either the image is free (for the purposes of Wikipedia, it's been released as free under CC-BY-SA), or that we can prove fair use. Usually for alive people, fair use isn't really doable. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 04:35, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Theoverseer1:If you take a picture of Archie Hamilton with your own camera, then the copyright belongs to you and you can upload it and release it under a CC-BY-SA license. If the picture was taken by someone else, then the copyright belongs to them, not you, and you cannot magically declare that it is now licensed under a CC-BY-SA license. They can, but you cannot. -Arch dude (talk) 05:26, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Dealing with a content dispute

Hi, I came across Land of the Lost (film) while patrolling recent changes. An IP removed the majority of the lead stating that "Critical response does not belong to the lead-in section". Though they've retained the critical response portion after I pointed out that there's no policy supporting removal, they still removed most of the first paragraph of the lead to say that it's "aimed at adult lowbrow viewers" (a bold claim to make, and not supported by the source they used) which I also believe doesn't properly summarize the article. I've already reverted three times, and this is my first content dispute, so I was wondering how I should go forward from now. Thanks, ayakanaa ( t · c ) 05:40, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If it's an IP and they're not regularly editing from the same address, I'd go to WP:RFPP. If it is regularly the same address, WP:3RN might be the best venue. FWIW I saw an unexplained deletion from that article as well and did warn the IP who'd made that edit at their Talk page. If you aren't leaving messages at their Talk page, you need to do so. DonIago (talk) 05:55, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to start expanding some articles (new text), but I don't have a very good knowledge of English to write almost perfectly, what do you advise me to do? I take this opportunity to point out that there is an error in the "further reading" paragraph of the salumeria page, could someone correct it? (I didn't create it). JackkBrown (talk) 09:56, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JackkBrown, there are errors in a large percentage of the paragraphs of a large percentage of en:Wikipedia's articles. What you might do is look for an article that seems to be well written but that is under-referenced, attempt to find sources for what it says, and, if you find sources, then add references to those sources. -- Hoary (talk) 12:49, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: I added my first reference in this encyclopedia (on the buccellato di Lucca page), did I make any mistakes? JackkBrown (talk) 14:08, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @JackkBrown: Per WP:CITESTYLE, I think you should use {{cite web}} for the reference you added. GoingBatty (talk) 18:42, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JackkBrown, somewhere in this set of edits, you added <ref>Giulia. (2021, October 17). Buccellato from Lucca, an ancient sweet bread. Juls’ Kitchen. https://en.julskitchen.com/tuscany/buccellato-from-lucca</ref>. Yes, as GoingBatty suggested, it would be a good idea to use {{cite web}}. But a couple of more elementary problems: You've provided no link (instead merely a URL that would have to be copied and pasted), and you haven't provided the author's surname (which is no mystery but easy to find). -- Hoary (talk) 22:24, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    ITN/R topics directly posted

Can we post topics listed in ITN/R without consensus (if the community is neither supporting nor opposing)? Harvici (talk) 10:24, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is best asked at the ITN talk page (WT:ITN). Lack of discussion should probably not be taken as a consensus in favor, though. 331dot (talk) 10:28, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Lord Taylor of Warwick information

To whom this may concern, I work for Lord Taylor of Warwick and he has requested that information of his age, birthplace and family (children and parents) are removed from the internet. Most common form of finding information is from Wikipedia. I believe in the past his wife, Lady Taylor has removed this unwanted information in the past but it resurfaced. I have tried removing the information myself today but it has reappeared straight away. Any help you can give with this issue would be much appreciated. Avamurrayworking (talk) 10:47, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

First, you will need to declare as a paid editor, see WP:PAID. This is a Terms of Use requirement.
I think it's going to be difficult to keep that information out of the article as it forms part of the reason for his notability(one of the youngest members of the House of Lords), but you should make a formal edit request(click for instructions) on Talk:John Taylor, Baron Taylor of Warwick. 331dot (talk) 10:54, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your advice, I am not getting any financial gain from this request. I am not wanting to remove the information about him being the youngest member of the House of Lords, we are just hoping to remove his birth date and current age. That should not affect his. notability. Further, his Birth place is an unnessecary peace of information. Finally, his family are not in the public eye and therefore their privacy deserves to be respected. I hope this information can be removed. Avamurrayworking (talk) 11:24, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"I work for Lord Taylor of Warwick" - so you most certainly are getting financial gain to make this request. This is not "his page", this is an entry in a global encyclopedia about a public figure. Would you have expected Debrett's to remove such information? We are, frankly, the modern-day equivalent of Debrett's. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:50, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Going by our policy at WP:BLPPRIVACY, I am going to remove the full date of birth and list the year only. The age is automatically calculated and it is in the public interest to have his year of birth and age.
As for family - going by our policy at WP:BLPNAME I see no reason to remove the fact that he has children nor that he has an ex-wife. His current wife is discussed in depth on Taylor's personal webpage so I see no reason to remove the name. Qcne (talk) 11:37, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Avamurrayworking: A tax-payer funded politician "Not in the public eye"? Really? Bazza (talk) 15:08, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Avamurrayworking I have left a message on your Talk Page to declare your conflict of interest and Paid editing. Failure to make this declaration is a breach of our Terms and Conditions.
Wikipedia is not censored, and therefore I see no reason why his age, birthplace and family are removed from this article. The pieces of information are correctly sourced. Qcne (talk) 11:10, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Correct the spelling of a name

    Hi,

I work for Philadelphia Ballet. I am trying to edit the name of our artistic director, Angel Corella. Currently his page lists his name as Ángel Corella, but his name does not have an accent in it. How do I change this?

Ángel Corella needs to change to Angel Corella Pbballet (talk) 14:35, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. First, as you will have noticed from your user talk page, you must change your user name, as names which imply shared use, or use on behalf of an organisation, are not allowed. You must either change your user name, or abandon the account and create a new, personal account. (You do not have to use your real name - I do, but many users do not) - and it may have your affiliation eg "John at PB", but it must be personal to you.
Second, you must read the restrictions on paid editing and make the mandatory public declaration of that status.
Third, you should not directly edit articles about Philadelphia Ballet or people associated with it, but should make edit requests relating to them.
I see that the very first reference cited in Philadelphia Ballet (which is in Spanish) does use the form "Ángel" for his name, but I see that those in English that I have looked at do not, so I have raised a move request to get the article's title changed. ColinFine (talk) 15:43, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the article has now been moved. I also see that somebody has tagged it as needing more sources - there are large sections of it which are completely unreferenced. ColinFine (talk) 17:05, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Legal changes

I have been tidying up the entry for an individual, and removing some of the incorrect (and some libellous) comments there, yet I am being barred from doing so by someone who says the changes are not constructive!. Please advise Trovatore1 (talk) 17:38, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You removed two passages of text cited to Reliable sources (the BBC, no less), and from my cursory look, both passages summarised their source accurately. If those Reliable sources are incorrect, you need either to convince their publisher to retract them, or to find equally reliable published sources that contradict them, in which case Wikipedia can present both and allow the readers to compare them.
"Tidying up" sounds constructive, but your edits could also be construed as "whitewashing", which is not. You should follow Wikipedia's standard procedure of WP:Bold, revert, discuss, discuss the matter with the reverter AntiDionysius (on the article's Talk page, yours, or theirs), and come to a mutually acceptable consensus.
May we ask what, if anything, is your connection to the subject David Burgess-Joyce? We have mandatory requirements about disclosure of paid editing, and rules about non-paid but subject-connected persons editing an article directly rather than making Edit requests. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.199.208.215 (talk) 18:11, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed; I reverted the edit because it removed well-sourced info without justification and added unsourced content. AntiDionysius (talk) 22:49, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That article has suffered for months from many editors trying to hide negative BLP details (see my recent few edits/edit-summaries for some thoughts). Feel free to request semiprotection at WP:RFPP; I'm out of time to wiki for now... DMacks (talk) 19:45, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help from better editors with picture placement.

I need some help formatting and placing pictures on a page. I am new and tried for ages but could not. Are any experienced editors willing to help?

Note I am unsure if I am doing this right or asking in the right place. So forgive me if I am doing it wrong. Wiki 1756 (talk) 17:42, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wiki 1756: Let me start by saying that nobody is superior than anyone on Wikipedia. I don't use the Visual Editor that much, so this just applies to the Source Editor. Take a copy of the picture name (!Note: Every image begins with File: or Image:), then place two square brackets [[]] on either side of the image name. Put a vertical line | near the image name's end but before the second pair (closing pair) of square brackets, then write "thumb". Then, position that line again and write a caption. [[File:The statue of Liberty.jpg|thumb|View of the [[statue of Liberty]] in New York, US]] is how your image should appear. 20 upper (talk) 18:18, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Diet water

In the late 80s and early 90s diet water was an advertisement to stay fit but was taken down after the FDA took it down because it had chemicals like nickel and radon in it and was causing cancer. if you want me to write a full page about diet water shoot me an email. Dietwater7 (talk) 21:25, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Dietwater7. If you want to write an article about diet water and you can find the reliable, independent sources required to establish that it meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then you are welcome to do so. Bear in mind that such an article must be based on independent published sources: neither your personal knowledge, nor material written or published by people involved with the product, is relevant to writing an article.
Note also that if you have a connection with the product (as suggested by your username) - then you have a conflict of interest, and would be well-advised to declare that publicly and familiarize yourself with the pitfalls of writing with a COI.
Finally, note that writing a Wikipedia article is extremely challenging for an inexperienced Wikipedia editor, and people who try it before they have spent significant time learning how Wikipedia works commonly have a frustrating and disappointing time.
My advice, as usual to new editors, is to put aside that idea entirely for several months, and spend your time improving some of our six million existing articles and learning about Wikipedia, espeically about verifiability, reliable sources, neutral point of view and notability. Then read your first article and, if you want to pick your idea up again, start by looking for the sources. ColinFine (talk) 22:07, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I notice that your only previous edit has been reverted, as you added a name without a reference to support it, and replace one word with a synonym which (in my opinion) read less well. There is nothing shameful about having your edit reverted, that's how Wikipedia works. But it does suggest that you are not yet equipped to try writing an article. ColinFine (talk) 22:12, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article differences between revisions no longer show the actual article.

So I've noticed that differences between revisions of articles, the actual article with the changes no longer shows.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_IMAX_venues&curid=2407040&diff=1203895338&oldid=1203876227&title=List_of_IMAX_venues&diffonly=1

Now I see the DIFFONLY parameter at the end, which is likely the culprit. So I tried a completely different page to rule out that it is a fluke.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Keanu_Reeves&curid=16603&diff=1203896175&oldid=1201400318&title=Keanu_Reeves&diffonly=1

It appears not to be a fluke.

Deleting the diffonly=1 and reloading the page has no effect, it just reinserts itself.

How can I revert the Diffonly change?

    Thanks! Urbanracer34 (talk) 22:14, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    José Delbo dead

The Facebook page of comics artist José Delbo contains numerous posts from his colleagues that he has died today. But his Wikipedia page shows him as alive and a Google search for "José Delbo dead" did not produce any results about his death. If Facebook cannot be used as a reliable source, do we have to wait for some sort of official press release until we can update the article about him to show that he is dead? JIP | Talk 22:27, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JIP, that is correct. Recent deaths must be verified by a reliable source. There is no rush. Cullen328 (talk) 23:06, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm starting to see it on a bunch of websites related to comic-books. For example, [5], which cites a tweet from his family. DMacks (talk) 03:51, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

best way to add a reference to an entire table?

Hello! What is the best way to add a source for data that is arranged in a table? As, I have a singular source for all of the data in the table, so I'm not gonna add the same source to each cell/row. (The specific cases I've been stuck on is for result/medal tables in sport competitions.) I know sometimes you can add a caption/header to the table and add your citation to that, but that's not always possible. I've sometimes seen tables that add Source: <ref>[the citation]</ref> below it, but that feels a bit improvised. TheZoodles (talk) 13:11, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TheZoodles: Add it to the table's caption. All tables should have one (MOS:TABLECAPTION). Bazza (talk) 13:39, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Are blogs by professionals okay?

So I found a source for a song genre, Pump it Up by Elvis Costello, says the song is punk and rock and roll. But I was wondering if the website Produce like a Pro is reliable? Iamthegoat524 (talk) 15:05, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:BLOGS says Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established subject-matter expert, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications.
Genre ascriptions for music are often contentious, so I advise discussing it first anyway. ColinFine (talk) 15:30, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Iamthegoat524 - it would help if you can provide a link to the actual statement, rather than an out of context question.
Although blogs are generally considered unreliable (especially those edited by multiple people, with no editorial control), Warren Huart is a respected professional, and, although he calls his website a blog, he appears to control and edit the output. Produce like a Pro has never been discussed at the WP:Reliable sources noticeboard, but it is already cited in 25 wikipedia articles [6].
Genres are only ever opinions, and cannot be dis/proven, but his is a professional opinion, so it is similar to a music journalist offering their opinion in a music magazine. However, I would like to see the actual comment, in context, before being more definite. - Arjayay (talk) 15:38, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Stalking

Can I report an user for stalking?

This person has been systematically interacting with me, without being invited or saying anything productive, just to intimidate me. I said they should find something better to do, and they answered "Have no fear, I have plenty of time to keep an eye on you even while doing many other things", which is a creepy behavior.
