"04:29, 25 December 2006 (hist) (diff) History of video game consoles (seventh generation) (→Worldwide sales standings - added "over" to wii and 360 sales)" was my 400th edit
The eighth generation in the history of video game consoles will begin around the same time the seventh generation ends, probably somewhere between 2010[1] and 2014. At present it is planned to include the successors to the Wii, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony have all mentioned their eighth generation consoles, which are unofficially referred as "Wii 2," "Xbox 720," and "PlayStation 4" respectively until the official names are revealed.[2][3][4] There is also speculation that Apple may re-enter the console market with a successor to the Apple Pippin 2, however they have not yet made any statement concerning these speculations.[5][6]
Nintendo 6
The successor to Nintendo's Wii is commonly called "Wii 2", "Super Wii" and "Nintendo 6." This article uses the term Nintedo 6 as it is a description rather than a speculative name. Should it be produced, the successor to the Wii will be the 6th mainstream system made by Nintendo. The "Nintendo 6" will place an emphasis on digitally distributed and backward compatable games and content. In an effort to store the new content Nintendo also plans to have a new storage solution, likely flash or a hard disk.[7]Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned at E3 2006 that the successor to the Wii would include high-definition capabilities. He explained that the number of HDTVs in homes is "really not that high, yet. Of course I think five years down the road it would be pretty much a given that Nintendo would create an HD system, but right now the predominant television set in the world is a non-HD set."
[2]Intel corporation has been speaking with Nintendo and its competitors regarding what chipset the next generation consoles may utilize. Intel's chief technology officer, Justin Rattner stated "We imagine some future generation of Nintendo's Wii won't have hand controllers, you just set up the cameras around the room and wave your hand like you're playing tennis."[8] Nintendo is also looking to improve its position in the online gaming arena. Shortly after the launch of the Wii, Nintendo offered a survey to selected members regarding the Nintendo WiFi Connection. The survey questioned how consumers felt about the Friend Code system and if there was any content that consumers would like to see on the service. Surely, Nintendo has plans to improve the quality of its online service.[9] Aside from all of the technical specifications, Nintendo has suggested that most of their future consoles will take on a sleek appearance. Ashida, an artist who helped design the Wii said "However, since we decided that a sleek design would be more suitable for Wii, a high-quality surface has been adopted, although the actual plastic is the same. I think this direction of pursuing sleeker designs will apply not only to Wii, but to all future Nintendo products." They find the design to be more appealing to a broad audience.[10] Regardless, Nintendo is pouring over $370 million into research and development (ten times more than was spent on the Nintendo Gamecube).[7]
It may have contectsoun to the Nintendo DSi.
Xbox 720
The successor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 is commonly called "Xbox 3" or "Xbox 720." Or if Microsoft decides to progress the title in increments of 180 it will likely be named "Xbox 540". Although their chief concern at this time is to lower the cost of the Xbox 360 and had not started on the Xbox 720's development as of November 2006,[3] Peter Moore has supposedly told EGM that the next Xbox console would be released between 2011 and 2012.[11] Microsoft EMEA veep Chris Lewis said in October of 2006 that work had already begun on the 720, however he did not say just how far that work had gone.[12] It has been speculated that the Xbox 720 will include a camera capable of tracking the movement of its users and not just the controller.[13] Microsoft has confirmed they are going to begin developing and producing their own computer chips which will probably be present in the 720. The research will be done by two groups, one in Redmond, Wash. and one in Silicon Valley. The man heading the Silicon Valley research team says that it is probable that voice interactive technology would be incorporated into the next Xbox console.[14]
Also they may make a Xbox360-mote.
PlayStation 4
Sony has stated that there will definitely be a PlayStation 4.[4] At this point they are the only company to announce that they will be involved in the eighth generation. Nevertheless, no information or theories have yet surfaced concerning what Sony will do with the PS4; however, they have stated that it will be released after 2010. Sony says they are planning for the PS3 to have a life span of about ten years, meaning they will discontinue support for that system in or around 2016. However, as Sony believes there is room for "significant overlap" it is probable that the PlayStation 4 will be released well before that, possibly 2011 according to one site.[15] In an interview with Sony’s vice president of worldwide studios, Jamie MacDonald says he considers it highly unlikely the PS4 will utilize disks, instead you will download all your games directly to the console.[16][17]

Other Possible Consoles
Apple Pippin 2
After Apple began hiring game designers, some people began to speculate that Apple was trying to enter the video game market.[5][6][18] In mid September of 2006 it was discovered that these people were partially correct, when Apple announced that it would be offering $5 games for the iPod.[19] This has not put the notion of an Apple video game console to rest however as some people believe that Apple is simply planning to enter the gaming market slowly and that these iPod games are the first step.[20][21] At this time no official word has been released concerning these speculations and even if Apple does create a Pippin 2 it may not be for the Eighth Generation.
Dell Handheld
After Dell's Global gaming chief, Abizar Vakharia, said that a handheld gaming device was, "definitely one that's on the radar screen" rumors started swirling around the net that Dell would be releasing a handheld gaming device.[22] However, Abizar Vakharia soon denied the rumors saying that while they are constantly evaluating new technologies they have no current plans to launch a handheld gaming device. The two comments are not contradictory and it is still possible that Dell is considering a handheld device.[23]
I strongly believe that Apple is planning to get into the video game market. there is simply too much of a risk of Microsoft pushing them back, causing them to loss ground in the home entertainment industry. Apple is simply entering the market slowly. they are first introducing games for the iPod that will be profitable and start to generate a name for apple in the gaming market. latter they will introduce a hand held unit that has some really cool twist to it. or might simply be white and have an apple on the back. but they will try and enter the hand held market first, using the iPod games as a starting point. once they are established they will try and enter the gaming console market, probably in the 8th or 9th generation. this will result in the death of one of the three dominant gaming platform.
