American International University-Bangladesh (Bengali: আমেরিকান ইন্টারন্যাশনাল ইউনিভার্সিটি-বাংলাদেশ) (AIUB) is a government approved private research university of Bangladesh. It was established in 1994 by Dr. Anwarul Abedin under the Private University Act, 1992.[2] The university is an independent organization with its own Board of Trustees.[3] It is now a leading university in the country offering several degree programs both at graduate and undergraduate level from its four faculties. The university currently has over 8000 students with over 225 full-time faculty members.

Rankings

AIUB was awarded the “Best Business School”[4] in 2004 by the Financial News Service (FNS), an economic news service which conducted a survey on the performance of all universities, and financial and industrial organizations in Bangladesh.

In July 2008, Webometrics ranked this university 2nd in Private Universities, 4th in Bangladesh and 92nd in the Indian subcontinent in their World Universities Ranking based on visibility of web presentation.”[5]

In 2009, [1] ranked this university 1st among the Private Universities and 2nd in Bangladesh in their Colleges and Universities By 2009 Web Popularity Ranking list.[6].In January 2009, Webometrics ranked this university 2nd in Private Universities, 4th in Bangladesh and 99th in the Indian subcontinent in their World Universities Ranking based on visibility of web presentation.


Campus locations

The University is situated in Kemal Atatürk Avenue, Banani, Dhaka and it has six campuses with two separate administrative building along with AQAC. Different campuses houses different faculties and departments:

Currently Due to the growing number of students, the university has expanded its space with the addition of a new 22 storied campus building at Banani (beside Hotel Sarina).

Academic programs

The academic programs gradually develop around the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Business Administration, and Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences.[7]



AIUB pioneered in offering Management Information System (MIS) program in Business Studies in Bangladesh. AIUB is the only university of the nation to offer the Agribusiness MBA (AgMBA) program. [8] The degree Master of Engineering in Telecommunications (M.Engg. in Telecommunications), is a joint degree program by the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering. AIUB is going to start this program from the next Spring Semester beginning on 17 January, 2009. The details curriculum of M Engg in Telecommunication is available here.

Research & innovation

In the research arena, AIUB has boldly continued with its academic journals: AIUB Journal of Science and Engineering (AJSE), ISSN # 1608-3679 and AIUB Journal of Business and Economics (AJBE), ISSN # 1683-8742. Since the first publications in 2002 by the Office of Research & Publications (ORP) of AIUB, three issues per years are being published regularly and the journals have been appreciated by the academics of the country and abroad. To make its unique mark in the research arena, AIUB has launched the nation's first online databank. This databank contains historical financial data of nation's business, stock market, economic data and HR data.

AIUB Quality Assurance Center (AQAC)

In pursuit of the University’s mission, vision and goals and adherence to the principles of quality and excellence of academic programs, AIUB establishes “AIUB Quality Assurance Center (AQAC)” on 1 September 2008.[9]

Computing & IT facilities

Information Communication Technology provides general-access computing and communication facilities for the entire University community, including a high-speed campus network linked to the Internet, computing labs, and central e-mail services. AIUB Information Communication Technology (ICT) department manages the university’s computing facilities. AIUB has 12 powerful server configured on different platform such as Windows AS/2000, Linux, AIX-Windows, and OS/400. Each of these servers has its purpose for running the entire operation of IT Department. Beside this server, there are more than 1000 latest Pentium 4 PC workstation that are interconnected using a fiber optic backbone runs from 100/1000 Mbit/s bandwidth. Some of the campuses are connected to the main distribution facility using radio link and wireless technology because of a difficulty in the cable connection. With a centrally designed local area and wide area networking, all the resources, file and printer sharing can be easily manage.

AIUB have 10 computer laboratories and each has 40 units workstation connected to its gigabit backbone. Different platform can be used from Windows to UNIX-based system with an internet and e-mail access available anytime. Faculty and staff have their own PC to have the IT services available for them. In addition, a dedicated Sun Solaris Lab was installed with Sun Ray Server and 40 units of workstation. IT Department is also engaged in Training and Development. AIUB have CISCO Networking Academy, HP IT Essentials as part of the program. CISCO curriculum is strictly followed to ensure that the student met the international standard of networking technology in the market. AIUB also have MSDN Academic Alliance, Microsoft IT Academy, Sun Microsystems, and recently acquired ORACLE Academy for University Students. Pearson VUE provides electronic licensure, certification, academic admission and government testing services in a variety of markets throughout the world. Last January, 2006 the Pearson VUE selected and authorized AIUB to deliver GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) examination online on its initial stage. Computer certification (i.e. Microsoft Certification, CISCO Certification, etc.) will be conducted in our testing center in due time.

Library facilities

AIUB Library

The AIUB Library is situated at the ground floor of Campus 1 & 5. It is an open library system with rich collection of books, journals, newsletter, thesis works and CDs. At present the library has more than 29,231 books and 132 online journals related to different academic areas like Business Administration, Science and Technology, Computer and Social Science. AIUB Library has 912 video CDs, covering more than 80 academic areas. The library can accommodate more than 525 students at a time. From four (4) terminals, students, faculty, and the authority uses the ‘AIUB Library System’ software, developed by the university IT Department, to search for and locate books and to manage the students borrow records.

Auditorium

The auditorium serves as an activity room for extra curricular activities. The auditorium can hold 210 people at a time. The auditorium is used to hold seminars, meetings, also for special classes, Business Presentation and the like. It is equipped with state-of-art facilities.

  • Academic Counseling: Each faculty member is required to provide additional academic assistance and guidance outside the class hours.

  • Securities: Security facilities include 24 hours in-house security personnel. Monitoring is accomplished through CC TV.

Extra curricular activities

AIUB is one of the only five universities from Bangladesh who have participated in the maximum level of ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) commonly known as ACM ICPC World Final.[14] In 2001, AIUB qualified for the world final through Wild Card by securing second place in ACM ICPC Kanpur Site regional.[15].
