The National Union for the Progress of Romania (Romanian: Uniunea Naţională pentru Progresul României, UNPR) is a political party of Romania. The party was formed in March 2010 by a group of independents who had broken away from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and National Liberal Party (PNL) and support President Traian Băsescu. However, tension began soon after the party's formation between former PSD and PNL members over the distribution of leadership positions and the political direction of the new party, with former Social Democrats dominating. It held its first party congress to elect its leaders on 1 May 2010.[1]
