== Deletion of Wiki Page ==

Due to an individual continually placing a libelous entry I wish to completely delete my Wikipedia page. Please can this be done with immediate effect. I have attempted to delete but it keeps returning back to its original form.

Thank You

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

    a patroller

Surely the patrollers can see when a new page is being edited? As a new user, I saved a new page a small amount of info as I added it, as I was learning how to add it. Only to have the page "cited for speedy deletion" after I added every other bit of info that would've proven it's relevance. The guy doesn't seem to give us newbies a chance to put together a proper page. All my additional info has been deleted and only an opening summary lies there now. What a waste of my time! This has completely ruined the new user experience for me. Considering Wikipedia occasionally petitions for fundraising because the page is run by volunteers etc, I now have zero inclination to donate if it's going to go towards that dismissive person who deleted my info :( — Preceding unsigned comment added by Funhouse99 (talkcontribs) 02:49, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to Esjay Jones? Looking at the history, I don't see that anything got deleted. I recommend you follow WP:YFA to create your first article. RudolfRed (talk) 02:59, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Funhouse99: I also must recommend reading WP:YFA and using the article wizard for your first few articles. Not because there's any problems, but because they are more welcoming than a CSD template like you saw. Also, just a trivial piece of information, your donations go to funding technical things (mostly), such as servers, and people to keep them up. None of the editors of the English Wikipedia, be they new page patrollers, administrators, bureaucrats, or just editors gets paid any money at all from your donations. ~Charmlet -talk-
(edit conflict) I have provided a number of useful links for you on your user talk page. In particular you should read WP:Your first article. Rather than trying to generate an incomplete article in article space, you ought to develop your draft as a user subpage, which you could call User:Funhouse99/Esjay Jones, or through the article for creation process. This will allow your work to be reviewed when you think it meets Wikipedia's standards, rather than being deleted. Note that no content has yet been deleted from Esjay Jones, but it is quite likely that the whole article will be deleted because it contains no references to demonstrate the subject's notability. - David Biddulph (talk) 03:13, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another editor has moved your draft to User:Funhouse99/Esjay Jones, so you can now work on it without immediate risk of deletion. - David Biddulph (talk) 03:17, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In addition Funhouse99, you asked a specific question which wasn't answered, can a patroller see that an article is being edited. In short, no. If you happen to open the article for editing, the software doesn't literally open the article, it makes a copy and opens in an editing window, If you spent an hour working on it, no one else would know it was open. That's one of the reason that it is better to work in user space, as no one can tell that you might be working on it.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 12:51, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ok, thanks guys — Preceding unsigned comment added by Funhouse99 (talkcontribs) 20:40, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

David, thank you for converting the page. I've now "built" the page and can hopefully submit without deletion. I really appreciate everyone else's advice, links, etc as this process is quite tedious especially if one has no coding knowledge outside of Myspace... Might somebody be able to tell me how to make one of those discography boxes that are often on artist pages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Funhouse99 (talkcontribs) 22:42, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Pic captions

    Gannon Dunkerley

sir ,please add the page of a company GANNON DUNKERLEY CO. LTD ,i have tried many times but i nt gt success....plz add this page ...this is very large organisation serving from 1924 in india — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sid053 (talkcontribs) 04:27, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Sid053. According to your list of contributions, this post is your first edit. Did you work on this company's article under another username? I notice that you are typing your company name in all capital letters. This may be part of the problem, since this is against Wikipedia policy. You should spell it Gannon Dunkerley instead. —Anne Delong (talk) 12:26, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think, Anne, that you need to remember that deleted articles are not shown on the user's contribution record. You may have missed the fact that the OP had written Gannon dunkerley corporation limited, which was speedily deleted under the criteria A7 and G11. A message on the OP's user talk page explains this. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:47, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A previous attempt was deleted, with the details shown at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gannon Dunkerley & Company. It appeared, from the evidence available at that time, that the company did not meet Wikipedia's requirements for notability. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:52, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
User talk:Sourav87, User talk:Skcpublic and User talk:182.72.245.138 were among those previously involved, and copyright violations were mentioned at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2012 July 17. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:58, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize to Sid053 for my not very helpful answer. I'm not sure why I didn't think of the deleted contributions, considering that over 2,000 of my own edits have disappeared into the deletion logs. —Anne Delong (talk) 07:09, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is it a "Synthesis of published material that advances a position"?

I would like to have an advice, concerning my writing deletion: Why did you deleted the sentences referring to the Water Plan.

    The deletion Diff page.

There is a claim, that my writing is forbidden because of Synthesis of published material that advances a position. However, as I understand it, my sentences complies with SYNTH is not mere juxtaposition.

    These are my points:

    1. - The Arabs opposed the Israeli NWC (National water carrier) since it would be used to irrigate the Negev and enable more Israeli farmers there.
    2. - The Israeli NWC consumed water were within the Johnston plan allocation
    3. - Israel and Jordan adhered to those quotas. The Arab League technical committee accepted it as well, but the League rejected it later, because of political reasons
    4. - The increase in water-related Arab-Israeli hostility was a major factor leading to the June 1967 war.

Those points are supported but not necessarily by the same wp:rs.

Can I write those points together (as in The deletion Diff page or modify it) ? or is it offending the wp:synth ? Ykantor (talk) 05:48, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Points 1 through 3 are facts. There may be irrelevant/unnecessary/trivial (see WP:UNDUE), depending on what the Wikipedia article is about, but otherwise they are fine. Whether or not the same reliable source is used isn't that important (and, arguably, it's better, if only for readers interested in looking at sources directly, if there are different sources).
Point 4 is clearly conclusionary - "major factor leading to". If this is your personal conclusion, then that is a violation of WP:SYNTH. If there are authoritative sources (experts) who have concluded this, then those experts should be cited. If the point is disputed (for example, other experts don't think this was a major factor), then that too should be included.
Assuming that you can find sources/experts that argue about water issues helping cause the war, then, again, WP:UNDUE is relevant. If most experts don't think that water issues were a major cause of the war - either saying so directly, or listing other causes but omitting water issues - then giving this topic much space in the article is not acceptable. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 16:36, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'd go so far as to say that parts of 1 and 3 could be considered conclusionary or synthesized, unless there are historians and/or other sources that prove the causation in those points. ~Charmlet -talk- 16:39, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

John Broughton and Charmlet thank you. My question might be unclear. The other editor does not oppose any of those 4 points (As I understand, which is rather difficult for me), since the points are well supported. He oppose mentioning of any relation between the Johnston water plan and between the war, since none of the RS mention such a relation.
    • My view is:
      • The increase in water-related Arab-Israeli hostility was a major factor leading to the June 1967 war. (which he accepts)
    • What is this water-related Arab-Israeli hostility?
      • The Arabs opposed the Israeli NWC (National water carrier) since it would be used to irrigate the Negev and enable more Israeli farmers there. (which he accepts)
    • What the Arabs has done in order to thwart Israel's National Water Carrier project?
      • Arab states resolved to reduce the operation of Israel's National Water Carrier by diverting the headwaters of the Jordan. (which he accepts)
    • What is wrong in the Arab diversion project?
      • Because it Deny's Israel water rights, according to the Johnston plan.
At this point, his attitude becomes rather complicated (for me). I would prefer that you would read his claims. The deletion Diff page
Anyway, he says:" As no source has placed the compliance of Israel's plan with the (failed) Johnston plan quotas in the context of the lead-up to the war, it has no place in that section."
    my reply:
    • The This compliance is an integral part of the water related hostility , and this hostility was a major factor leading to the June 1967 war.
    • Here is a quote of an RS, accepted by this editor, that mentions all this points.
name="Murakami1995p287">Masahiro Murakami (1995). Managing Water for Peace in the Middle East; Alternative Strategies. United Nations University Press. pp. 287–297. ISBN 978-92-808-0858-2. Retrieved 15 July 2013. The book appears in: http://archive.unu.edu/unupress/unupbooks/80858e/80858E0m.htm . The initial diversion capacity of the National Water Carrier without supplementary booster pumps was 320 million m3, well within the limits of the Johnston Plan. ......Shortly before completion of the Israeli Water Carrier in 1964, an Arab summit conference decided to try to thwart it. Discarding direct military attack, the Arab states chose to divert the Jordan headwater......he Arab states chose to divert the Jordan headwaters.......diversion of both the Hasbani and the Banias to the Yarmouk.....According to neutral assessments, the scheme was only marginally feasible; it was technically difficult and expensive......Political considerations cited by the Arabs in rejecting the 1955 Johnston Plan were revived to justify the diversion scheme. Particular emphasis was placed on the Carrier's capability to enhance Israel's capacity to absorb immigrants to the detriment of Palestinian refugees. In response, Israel stressed that the National Water Carrier was within the limits of the Johnston Plan......he Arabs started work on the Headwater Diversion project in 1965. Israel declared that it would regard such diversion as an infringement of its sovereign rights. According to estimates, completion of the project would have deprived Israel of 35% of its contemplated withdrawal from the upper Jordan, constituting one-ninth of Israel's annual water budget.......In a series of military strikes, Israel hit the diversion works. The attacks culminated in April 1967 in air strikes deep inside Syria. The increase in water-related Arab-Israeli hostility was a major factor leading to the June 1967 war. {{cite book}}: External link in |quote= (help)</ref>

    Aimee Du Buc de Rivery

I have an MA in History, so I am great at adding references but, alas, I have zero qualifications in editing Wikipedia. Could you have a look at the history of the edit page about Aimee Du Buc de Rivery ? The article now shows her correct date of birth, backed by the correct evidence. However, I made about ten entries to make that edit. Can you help me clean my entries up? I am now terrified to touch them.--Galleeson (talk) 07:51, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I added a title for you Rojomoke (talk) 09:18, 10 September 2013 (UTC) [reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia, Galleeson. Your addition looks quite ok to me - it's what one would expect a book reference to look like. It would be helpful if you could provide the ISBN number of the book. If you don't want to add it to the reference you can simply post it here and I'll put it in where it should go. You might also want to take a look at the Referencing for beginners guide. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:00, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You may also want to preview your edits before submitting them. This makes the page history a lot easier to read, since there will only be one change, no matter how many times you need to correct yourself before saving your edit. MChesterMC (talk) 10:54, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What is the policy for currencies on the English Wikipedia? I find it easier if US Dollars are used, as I know what its worth in many other currencies. References [edit source] link not displayed as it should be

    Hi All,

As I am very new (less than 72hrs member) please let me down gently! I have added content to this Macor page and that went pretty well even including picture etc. The problem lays in the References on the bottom the page where I added references regarding source of macor material. On the reference list the number 4: www.macor.info stays black and does not turn into a link. I have tried to fix it but don't know how as I don't want to bugger the list up.

Any help or a fix would be highly appreciated in this matter.

    Regards,

    Technical ceramics (talk) 00:20, 11 September 2013 (UTC)technical-ceramics[reply]

The reference didn't display as a link because it wasn't preceded by http:// . Fixed. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:51, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to be another more serious problem here: a potential WP:COI, if Technical ceramics has a close connection to Macor or its manufacturers. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 09:36, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    RFC

I started a request for comment on Josh Willis about 24 hours ago, and for some reason it still hasn't been listed under WP:RFC/BIO. I was wondering if anyone knew why this is the case. Jinkinson (talk) 03:38, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Did you click the link at the bottom that says "add a new request?" RudolfRed (talk) 03:44, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but it says you're supposed to post it on the article's talk page first, so I assumed I didn't have to post it on the request board too, but I just did that. Jinkinson (talk) 03:51, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you place an RFC on a talk page, then within 24 hours a bot should add the RFC to the list of RFCs on the topic. If you then added the RFC manually to the category, it may then appear twice, which is nearly harmless. My guess is that the bot was having performance problems. Never be surprised by performance problems with computers. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:13, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    VisualEditor adding refnames

When I add references using the visual editor, I've not figured out how to add refnames. How do I do this? (if this is already implemented. else I'll file a feature request). Thanks Staticd (talk) 06:39, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The visual editor invents names for the existing references when you click "Use an existing reference" at the bottom of the "Reference" dialog. But, in the test I just carried out at User:John of Reading/Sandbox, I wasn't able to re-use my reference until I had first saved the edit and then clicked "Edit (beta)" again. Disclaimer: I haven't used the Visual Editor to make any real edits yet. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:39, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you can only re-use it after the page has been saved. There's a bug for this, but I can't find the number right now.
The inability to name the refs is Template:Bug. It was possible to name refs for a few weeks, but it's been turned off for now. I don't know why. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:54, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually this site company page copyright were belong to us. How could i claim it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dhtcuae (talkcontribs) 07:36, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is possible for the Dubai Herbal and Treatment Centre to release its copyright in this text, allowing it to be used in Wikipedia. But there are two other, more serious, problems with the article Dubai Herbal and Treatment Centre. One is that it gives no evidence that the Centre is notable enough to justify the existence of a Wikipedia article. The other is that you are associated with the Centre - this makes you an unsuitable person to create or edit the article. Wikipedia articles should be written by neutral persons. Maproom (talk) 07:46, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that your Username contravenes Wikipedia:Username policy which prohibits usernames which "consist of a name of a company" Furthermore, as you admit you work for the centre, you have an obvious conflict of interest, so you should not be editing that page at all, except in a few, extremely limited, circumstances. Please read Wikipedia's policy on conflict of interest before editing it again. Arjayay (talk) 08:37, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Copying from other sites

Hello, I am an art lover and I wrote a new article about an artist I discovered recently in the press who was not yet in Wikipedia.

I received this message : “It seems to me that an article you worked on, PHIL AKASHI, may be copied from http://www.philakashi.com/biography. It's entirely possible that I made a mistake, but I wanted to let you know because Wikipedia is strict about copying from other sites.”

Some excerpts of the article appear indeed on the website of the artist in his biography page. That's why I have mentioned the references in the article. If the artist agrees to “free” the copyright of this text and allow it to be published in Wikipedia, would it be ok? I am going to contact the artist via his website, what should I ask him precisely to be sure to clarify the situation?

Permission from the copyright owner must be for all purposes, including commercial reuse, see WP:IOWN. Permission for use only on Wikipedia is not sufficient. Also, note that even if the copyright issue is resolved, the tone of the text will almost certainly be inappropriate for Wikipedia - websites usually exist to promote people, companies etc, which is the very antithesis of what Wikipedia is all about.--ukexpat (talk) 15:12, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Upon further investigation, I find that the "=" signs seem to be the problem; if I delete them, it works! I wouldn't expect the url to work without the "=" signs, but the second one does. (Note that the first item has one "=" sign and the second has three.)

If you meant removing an article from the feature itself, you can disable it by going to the article's associated feedback page (you can navigate there by going to the talk page of the article and clicking "View reader feedback"); click on the cog () icon, and then click "Disable feedback on this page".--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:26, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How can I see what templates will look at before placing them?

Hello fellow editors! I do a lot of work at Afc, so I am frequently using both the Afc script and Twinkle. Both of these tools (very useful, by the way) often place templates either on articles or on talk pages without allowing a preview. Often the text placed bears little resemblance to the short summary on the pop-down option list. Some of the list items don't say the name of the template tha will be placed. This makes me hesitant to use some of the features because I can't see what the result will be. Some templates have samples on their documentation pages, but not all. Is there a way to test out templates placed by these tools without actually placing them, in the same way that the "preview" function works on articles? An example is the "Warn" feature on Twinkle. I tried to use it in my sandbox, but it disappeared from the list. I tried it on my talk page, but it seemed to think that I was making an error by warning myself. —Anne Delong (talk) 01:05, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Anne. To test article tagging, use the article sandbox. To test user-page tagging (warn, welcome, and talkback), use the user warnings sandbox. I've copied and pasted this from Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc, which has other material you might find useful. If I were you I'd keep those two sandboxes open in separate tabs as I was working. Two sources, two versions

Hi. Last night, after the end of matches listed in the article 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification – CONCACAF Fourth Round, I waited for the end of various updates to make some technical controls. In a match, Honduras-Panama (2-2), the FIFA report (both in index and final report forms) assigns the 2nd Panamanian goal to Gabriel Torres, min. 90'. CONCACAF report assings it to Roberto Chen, min. 90+2' (see live commentary), after an assist... Yesterday I reverted an anon edit (this one) explaining the reasons in the summary and preferring FIFA version to CONCACAF's one because, in the doubt, FIFA's is the one linked in the article. By now I've seen this edits but I've not reverted them. Well, I've not reverted for some reasons: to avoid a possible edit war because the anon could be right (CONCACAF report) and, btw, the IP seems to come from Panama... and the IP could have seen the match on TV... Well, in cases as this one what is the report to follow? It's just a help request to a most experienced user in this field. Sorry for the mini-minimality of the problem shown. Thanx for listening. --Dэя-Бøяg 02:53, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just a thought but I think this is the video showing the scoring (except it's experiencing technical difficulties right now, at least when I try to view it). If you can view it and they focus in on the scoring goals, you should be able to see the face of the person scoring the goal (or maybe their team number) and match that to their public likeness or number. This might be seen to tread into original research territory, but what you would be doing is bolstering one of the existing sources with a corroborating source you can cite, with just a twist of commonsense that anyone can duplicate.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:19, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have also included a WP:wikilink to the article concerned. draft template param displaying pipe 2 ways

I'm drafting a template with a parameter that takes a manually-entered string as a value. If the string includes "{{!}}", the rendering depends on whether it is in a URL or not. If it is, the rendering is as "%7C"; but if is not in a URL, the rendering is as "|". In a test, I found that a URL (a different one) does not necessarily resolve percent-encoding to the unencoded form so the intended address can be reached (tested by percent-encoding either the dot before "com" or a letter); the Internet service provider was unable to determine what destination I wanted and sent me some advertising instead. How can I make the parameter display the literal result of the "{{!}}" template even if embedded in a URL, just as happens when there's a string without a URL? Although a pipe is not common in a URL, I think it is permitted. (I asked about the problem at Help talk:Template but there's no answer.) Nick Levinson (talk) 16:04, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Nick Levinson: - For this question, and the one in the section immediately below this, better places to ask (sorry) are WP:VPT or WT:WikiProject Templates. If you don't get any further answers here, I suggest trying one of those in a day or so. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 23:17, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

URL from draft template linked with next word

If a parameter value is a URL ending with either an equals sign or a template that generates an equals sign ("=" or "{{=}}", respectively, without quotation marks), the displayed result is of a linked URL that extends the link to include the next word in the displayed result, beyond the URL, making following the link difficult except for us geeks perceiving the error. Examples are visible of the overextended link despite ending with "{{=}}" and the proper link even though the value has subsequent text and the proper link even though the value has a subsequent space template (I assume a plain space there would get stripped) and are based on the template draft. By contrast, another template has no such problem. (I asked at Help talk:Template but there's no answer.) Nick Levinson (talk) 16:12, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

article about "tick (parasite)" doesn't link/list all languages

Hello, in my daily browsing of wikipedia I stumbled on the english article about "Tick".

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick

I wanted to read it also in my native language (Italian), but I couldn't find the link in the listed languages on the left. I thought it was impossible and indeed I was right; here it is:

    http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixodida

I understand it might be a matter of orders, but the scientific name is the same (Ixodida) and in a casual conversation when you say "tick" in english you means "zecca" in Italian. One more thing. As you can see the Italian version is somehow linked to very few other languages who form a separate group from the others with two exceptions, Spanish and Portuguese. These languages lead to different pages.

    http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixodoidea and http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixodida

    http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrapato and http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixodida

But if you have them checked, they are really saying the same things. Could it be that one was written for Spain and the other for Latin America in one case. Portugal and Brazil in the other case?

Dear editors: While checking out an article that has been nominated for deletion, Neustar, I saw that it had an external link in the lead paragraph. This apparently is generated by a template. I am not all that familiar with business articles; is this an exception to preference for keeping URLS out of the paragraph part of an article? —Anne Delong (talk) 03:22, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes. The link is supposed to be only in the article once, preferrably in an infobox. See {{Nyse}}. If the article survives deletion review, it will need to be cleaned up. RudolfRed (talk) 03:29, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The article is going to survive the deletion nomination, I guarantee - this is a NYSE company, not a small business. In any case, I've removed the template-generated link (that is, the template itself) since it is, as noted, already in the infobox, and that's the only place (based on other articles about companies that I looked at) that it should be. (And yes, WP:EL essentially bans external links from the body of an article; infoboxes are an exception.) Parenthetical disambiguation

Can a word or phrase be a redirect to that word or phrase with a disambiguating term in parentheses? For example, the novel "Les Misérables" is a primary topic for the phrase "Les Misérables". In such a case, can "Les Misérables" be a redirect to Les Misérables (novel) with a hatnote in the article for refering to the disambiguation page? I mean is there any specific guideline that prohibit adding parentheses to a primary topic? --Ali Pirhayati (talk) 06:30, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Automated chapter adding to books

Take a look at this book. Is there a way to automatically add Chapters for each page/article with the same name? I know you can add them in the source with ";Chapter name" --Drogonov 08:18, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
