KEGY (97.3 FM, "Energy 97.3") is a radio station that broadcasts a Top 40/CHR format that is licensed to serve San Diego, California, United States. The station, founded in 1964, is owned by Entercom and the broadcast license is held by Entercom San Diego License, LLC. The station's studios are located in San Diego's Mission Valley neighborhood, and the transmitter is located in East San Diego in the Emerald Hills neighborhood.
HD Radio
KEGY broadcasts on HD Radio. The HD-2 channel is a simulcast of LA's & OC's Alternative Rock 106.7 KROQ in Los Angeles, California. The HD-3 channel is "House of Sophie" that plays an EDM format.
History
97.3 signed on as KSEA in 1964. In 1967, it began its long run as a country music station as KSON.
In 2007, the station was nominated for the top 25 markets Country music Radio & Records magazine station of the year award. Other nominees included WUSN Chicago, KYGO-FM Denver, WYCD Detroit, KEEY-FM Minneapolis, and WXTU Philadelphia.[1]
In January 2014, KSON celebrated George Strait for his final appearance on The Cowboy Rides Away Tour as it became GEORGE-FM for the entire month of January.
On December 8, 2014, Entercom announced that it was purchasing Lincoln Financial Group's entire 15-station lineup (including KSON) in a $106.5 million deal, and would operate the outlets under a LMA deal until the sale was approved by the FCC.[2] The sale was consummated on July 17, 2015.
On November 16, 2017, at 9 p.m., KSON would move to 103.7 FM, formerly the home of KEGY, "Energy 103.7". The final song KSON played on 97.3 was "Die a Happy Man" by Thomas Rhett. Both stations simulcasted the country format until 5 a.m. on November 20, when "Energy" officially moved to 97.3. The first song played on "Energy 97.3" was "Good Old Days" by Macklemore and Ke$ha. The move comes as KSON's former simulcast partner KSOQ-FM was spun off to the Educational Media Foundation as a condition of Entercom's merger with CBS Radio and to meet ownership limits set by the FCC, and that 103.7 has a stronger signal than 97.3.[3]
